Product review: Oase Biomaster Thermo on the rare Tetra aquarium.

  • The second review I have ever done! (Yes I know I should have done more by now!) As you may have seen, I recently set up a rare Tetra community aquarium at home with ‪@MDFishTanks‬. The filter we used was the ‪@oasevideo‬ Biomaster Thermo external canister filter. Although I haven't been sponsored by Oase, I have to say that the filter has performed amazingly on my new Scaperline aquarium.
    The Oase Biomaster is definitely one of my favourite aquarium filters but don't just take this description at face value, go watch the video to find out how awesome this filter is!
    More to come in the future with more product reviews, let me know in the comments what products you would like me to feature.

    I still think a great idea for a monthly show would be you and MD at the pub talking fish, drinking and eating. You could call it "Fish & Chips". By the way, you and MD together is some of the best content on RUclips today.

    Great review ! I've owned the Biomaster 600 for about 6 months and think it's a great filter. Love the pre-filter and how it extends the cleaning intervals of the main filter. I clean the pre-filter every 2 weeks and only clean the main filter every 6 months. I run the filter on a 200 litre tank. I bought a spare set of pre-filter foams so I can do a quick switch over when doing my fortnightly clean. I then clean the pre-filter foams at my leisure later on. I also added some superglue to the rubber feet that the filter stands on ........if you don't they keep coming off ! One slight gripe I have about the filter is that it does tend to take on air from somewhere and then periodically purge it. This is a common occurrence with Biomaster filters (plenty online about it) and something Oase are aware of. It would be great if Oase could release an upgraded range where this didn't happen. The pros this filter has though massively outweigh any cons in my opinion.

      I’m thinking about getting the 600 for my 55 gal which is roughly 200 liters also, but if you drill more holes in the pre filter tube it will help with the air issue and increase flow supposedly

    The first time I saw this range of canister filters on MDs channel I was blown away by the features they have. The little things like the way it has a prefilter, the way various bits lock down to make it harder to open it and spill water everywhere, the heater installed into the canister filter (not so unusual in internal pump systems I've seen researching for my future big tank but it seems less common in canister filters). I'm really very very tempted to get one of these for my planned 3ft when I get it. Yes its not going to be a cheap canister filter compared to others available in the local market (Australia) but its all the little things they have thought of that seem to really add that quality. I'd rather spend a little bit more if its worth it, for a product that'll make tank and filter cleaning/ maintenance easier.
    Have you (or other channel viewers) seen many other canister filters that have features like prefilters (this is one that I like the most for the ease of cleaning!)? Ive tried to do a bit of research on them as to best options when I built my paludarium (I'm very noob with such things!) but there's so much out there and contradicting views on what makes a canister filter good value for money or not. In the low to mid end range, it seems a lot are about as good as each other/ have very similar features and build quality. In the end I went with the recommendation of my local fish place for a cheaper but sizable enough chinese built unit, since they use them regularly in builds without issues and found them to be cheap and relable- and thankfully it seems to pump the exact right amount of water for my paludarium waterfall 😁 and makes filter maintenance so easy vs how I would have had to set up an in-tank filter. for my planned 3ft I'm happy to spend a bit more on the filter though.

But nice to see you putting it together, reminds me on the process and prepare me a little bit 😅🤞🤞
    Good idea to see the it with only Oase parts - everybody say that they are rubbish 🤔
    Greetings also to your wife and little Quinn from Denmark 🌞👋
    Btw: about drilling holes ind the prefilter. A Danish guy (called Ole, a bit famous her in Dk, owner of Unimati) says that its a misunderstanding to want a fast flow in filters, since biological filtration is more effecient if you get water run slowly. Something about bacteria getting time to do their work 🤔 he said in the film that if you want flow in the water - get a powerhead or something else! Hope I make sense in explaining - maybe its something everybody knows, but I never heard that before but think its interesting and makes sense.

    Just finished the whole video. Brilliant review as always. The tank looks great. If I can make a humble suggestion. Add a surface skimmer to take full advantage of your Kessil lights ability to produce shimmer. It will remove the oil/scum slick from the surface. I did this on my nano saltwater tank to great effect. You could also use the spray bar on the surface to produce a similar scum break up. Just an idea for you.

    That being said, between your review and others I'm thinking the long term solution I want is to pick ip one of these. The convenience, ease of use, and reliability all really appeal to me after having such trouble with the comparatively "simple", inexpensive canister. I just want something that works with minimal fuss and some nice quality of life features at this point.

    I actually wasn't expecting that much after two weeks running. I'm thinking I've been convinced to move on to canisters. I have a pretty annoying bladder snail problem. It doesn't bother me too much but having a Tidal HOB, they like to crawl into it. I've added sponges to the inlets but that just makes it so I have to do more whole filter maintenance.

      Oh yeah the filter definitely worked hard even in those two weeks. I remember an old filter we had at the shop and there was never any snails I'm the aquarium but hundreds living in the filter and the sponges were always really clean, I guess due to the snails constantly consuming the poop.

    imo Oase are the top manufacturer of filters atm, anyone starting out should just got for the Thermo 100. Ive used the 100, 250 and 350 and I always go back to the 100. No nonsense, great little filter that can work on anything up to 100L (pretty much anything ~60cm and below). The pre-filter is nice but its just a gimmick at the end of the day and these units tend to gurgle/bubble. Still great filters if you have a larger tank and would pick them over anything else on the market.

      Amen! I'm yet to try the 100 so possibly one to get for my next nano tank build! ❤️

      They are very premium, but not sure that I would swap my 407 for one.
      Where Oase do seem to lead the way are with internal filters. Their Bioplus range is peerless in my opinion.

    That filter is huge……….yet it handles for cleaning so easily. I get your comment for heater light…….but it’s a small sacrifice for getting it out of the tank. I believe Oase is well on the way to unseating Fluval from the throne.

    Bought my 250 from you a couple of weeks ago and wished I'd have seen this first! My only suggestion would be for Oase to add a little more description to their set up instructions; seems simple enough, but had 2 little mishaps myself... 1) installing some ceramic instead of a filter sponge - was a bit over-excessive with the quantity, locked the lid in place and needless to say, water absolutely everywhere! 😅 Plus, 2) I misunderstood the instructions and tried to prime while the filter was running and was mildly confused when there was still loads of air in the system. Easy to learn from the mistake though so won't happen again. Thank you for showing a clean/it in action as well, Matt - so helpful!
    One question if I may: how often in normal running would you expect to need to clean the sponges? It clearly picked up a lot of gunk in the 2 weeks you've had it installed and while I have had mine running for 2 weeks, it's on a fish-out cycle so no critter muck at the mo. I'm assuming that possibly less now/more later (considering my critter will be a big pooper when I get it) but is there an ideal/average clean time?

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  Год назад +1

      Very interesting, it's easy mistakes to make!
      As for cleaning every aquarium is different, but I would check the prefilter once a week or two. As for the main filter maybe once a month to check it but shouldn't really need to be to worried about it.

      @@FishShopMatt Matt, I'm going to put you on the spot. If you were going to be given either an Oase or Fluval canister filter and you only had a choice of one? Which would you choose?

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  Год назад

      That's difficult! Both have pros and cons but I think Oase may just sneak it. Hardest thing is they are great in completely different ways. I have used both and it comes down to which you prefer.

    Matt. I’m thinking of this filter for my Jewel Rio 240, but also looking at the Fluval 407. The heater in the filter makes me like this one, but as you mentioned in the vid there’s no way of knowing if it’s not working as if you would if it was in the tank. Decisions decisions!

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  Год назад +1

      Thank you. There is a couple reasons one being it may slow the filter down slightly and make the pump work harder because of curves and kinks in the longer pipework. The other reason can be that it's harder to prime and get going because of airlocks in the piping.
