Great video Matt. Favourite Aquarium content on RUclips. I took up the hobby about a year ago at the age of 59! I’ve learnt so much from watching you and my aquarium has been very successful as a result. Thank you 😊
Stick on glass pellets are great for getting your mad frantic fish away from the more timid ones that dont like the commotion so you can then give another food to them. Useful if they have different diets. edit: typo
I also tell customers who have 10 gazillion litres per hour filters, watch how the food travels around. If it's getting sucked in to the filter, turn them off for a few minutes while feeding. Food rotting in filters is often responsible for problems.
This was super helpful Matt. I’ve been adjusting my feeding lately because I think I’ve been feeding a bit more than necessary. This was great information. Thank you.

That's awesome James I'm glad they are finding them useful! This is the sort of comment I love to see. Helping people get into the hobby and enjoy it is what it's all about.
Fish will find a snack if they want it. I have a female guppy who will literally grab small bladder snails and slurp them right out of the shell! And the secret to not overfeeding and keeping clear water for me is keeping a very light bio load keeping lots of detrivores, snails and shrimp will keep your plants algae free and pick up any stray food and fish poop.
Well done Matt for mentioning Plecos, catfish and shrimp. So Many people don't feed there bottom dwelling fish, especially plecos. I have had colleagues have fish dying from lack of food. They think alge is enough. Really like this video. 😊
I bought a few bits from herons pet world online shop. Very good value and all my fish love it. Some are picky eaters and didn't really like any flake food from all the big brands.
The only thing I would add is to feed to how energetic feeders your fish are. I have a 90 gallon mixed community tank. If I fed lightly my angels, sae's and red eyed tetras would get the lot, leaving nothing for my lemon and cardinal tetras, bristlenose, otto or corys. I feed on the heavy side, once a day, with the lot going in at once. That way it filters all the way down the water column, and everyone gets something. 5 days a week, flake or pellets, 2 days frozen, rest on the 8th day. 4 evenings a week algea wafers after dark. Once a week, some raw courgette for the bristlenose.
I find MDs tap tap works really well for feeding. You dont need to bash the tank hard- a couple of soft taps is all thats needed. and my fish come out of all their hiding places coz they know its time for food! They learn it super quick from the others- within days my baby guppies have learnt it from the adults and peek out. Then as you said- you can evaluate your fish health. I don't feed every single day though. I use a micro granule for tropical fish from a local aquarium shop and grind it smaller between my fingers for my smaller fish like bub guppies, endlers and nano raspora. then every other feeding give them some tropical flake instead (I break it up a bit). They do really well on the granule. The bristlenoses usually get an algae wafer- the shrimp love these as well. I mix that up with shrimp pellets and sinking catfish pellets (for cories etc) for some variety for the bottom dwellers, plus the shrimp happily hunt down any fish food in there. The guppies also chase and eat the sinking pellets. Seems to give them a good variety and they seem happy and healthy with nice colours and no issues that ive seen. Once every week/ 2 weeks I give them some frozen food, daphnia atm, for something different. note- I tip my food into the lid or my hand then pour it in the tank- just in case it all comes out at once! If I go away for more than a couple days, I measure out what is needed into little containers, write the day and tank on them (they are placed in front of the appropriate tank), then my visiting friend knows all she has to do is tip that containers worth in- no guessing what they need etc. As a side note we get a lot of evaporation from the open tanks so I also plastic wrap the open tanks with a few air holes so she doesnt have to worry about additional maintenance, with a bucket of water ready at room temp just in case she needs to top up (hasnt been needed yet).
You have it all sorted and organised, great work! Fish can learn a lot more than we give them credit for, I used to have a puffer that would come out of hiding at the sight of a golden bell. I don't think it was the noise just the sight of something that always meant food was coming.
Variety is the spice of life. I feed about 4 different types of food to our fish. Large flakes, pellets large & small & tiny, dehydrated brine shrimp & tubifex worms, algae wafers for the bottom. We feed a nice pinch in the morning & again a few hours before lights off. Filters stay clean & no algae or yuck.
Thank you for including a link to the mini measuring scoops! I have one micro tank and measuring out everything, food, tap water conditioner, medications, etc. has been such a pain. Much love from the American fish keeping novices!
I feed my fish mainly Dr. Bassleer and most pots come with spoons. Except when it´s tablets or shrimp sticks. All the granular foods come with spoons. The spoons are so handy!
Greetings from Scotland, useful information even for us longer term fish keepers... I have a 20cm featherfin synodontis (named Simon) in my community tank, he's happy bordering on plump... I have never seen him eat anything in the 5 years I've had him...
Great video Matt! It's good to know, from listening to your advice, that I'm feeding my fish just right with a variety of foods. The plecs luurve a slice of cucumber!
Nice video, I like your spin on these subjects. It can def be more in depth than a lot of other topics. It’s def my favorite of the fish keeping hobby. It is worth noting that prepared foods are def not higher quality than say Live or Frozen though. It’s no different for humans or dogs either. The more Whole Foods we eat the healthier we are, the less processed food we eat, the healthier we are. So while pellets and flakes are more convenient, there is no way they’re healthier than a variety of frozen foods.
Thank you. The issue with frozen foods is they can be of quite low quality and have more water than anything else. But if you can get a good quality one it can be as good.
@@FishShopMatt a banana is healthier than a dried banana. A juicy steak is healthier than a dried steak, and if a fish stumbles across another dead fish in the wild and eats off it, it’s not going to be malnourished just because it had water content to it 😜 The food companies want you to think it’s higher quality so they make more money. I buy a lot of my frozen food from the grocery store and Asian market :) Also, a lot of times a food is better not for what it contains, but what it doesn’t contain. And healthy, organic foods don’t contain the bad stuff that the body has to filter out.. such as preservatives, flour, random binders, sugars, color dyes, and other chemicals that most humans eat without even knowing what said ingredient is on the package. The less stuff the fish has to digest that isn’t actual food/nutrition, also the better. I bet if you ever had health issues, your doctor will suggest more Whole Foods, and stay away from highly processed ones. 😎
I'm a bit of an oldhead, so I know this info already, but I do have to visit your Tetra/festivus tank and you in videos every time I get. 😊 I really, really need to try festivus some fine day.
Thanks for detailing the various aspects of feeding. The only variant path I have had to chose is with my large cichlid tank. I have red devils which only take pellets and no frozen food which is fine, but I have an Oscar and to a lesser extent a jag that wont touch pellets, only cichlid flake food. For sometime when he was small, he was hardly growing which is unusual for an Oscar but then I started to notice how selective he was with food. Once I started feeding frozen food (like raw fillets, prawns, mussels) he started growing much quicker.) To be honest i would prefer to feed frozen food less (like what you suggested in the video) but I guess you have to cater for distinct situations sometimes.
Thanks so much ❤. Just what `I needed. I now have a set of “drop, tad, pinch” spoons and can feed properly. I’ve been battling a cloudy tank and it’s obvious now that I’ve been overfeeding. Thank you I 🎉🎉🎉
great advice Matt - love watching your vids I've been keeping fish on and off for a good few years, got into the hobby years ago because of my Dad and he would turn in his grave at the expense of keeping fish these days but I came on to say that in addition to dried flake etc. frozen food has its place. I have a cute little pea puffer that will not accept anything but frozen blood worm. Something I feed is cut up earthworms and the fish go mad for them, i make sure i don't give more than they can eat in one sitting to avoid any left overs fouling the water.
Very useful, thanks! I gave my neons and harlequin rasboras some bloodworm last night. They went crazy for them, but a couple of the neons (both female I think) overdid it and their bellies were *huge*! They looked like they might explode. Thankfully they were back to normal this morning. I think they may have stolen from other fish, as I only dropped the worms in one at a time, enough for one apiece. Also one of my cherry shrimp sucked a bloodworm clean - something I didn't think would happen! Anyway, loving your videos - I'm new to the hobby with my first tank.
I feed my fish a mix of hikari pallets for tetras and for discus, sera insect granules and tetra tropical fish mixed food. Some of it floats some of it sinks, some of it is small some it is big. It varies all the time how much they get of what. The discus pallets sink fast and my bumblebee catfish and corydoras love it. And once in a while frozen food like bloodworms and beefheart. Also i dont feed regularly. One time a few days in a row and than i skip one or two days This makes them go around scavaging in the tank.
Thank you so much for the amazing content!! You’ve been amazing inspiration! I now have a 240l Roma scaped and a nano cube “Shrimp Mountain” scaped!! I must not buy more tanks I must not buy more tanks…😂

What a brilliant video. specifically started looking for tiny pellets when i bought my chili rasboras. aiming for about 2 pellets per fish per day. give or take... have some shrimp in there too. works fine for now.
I absolutely love your Snow White bristlenose. I’ve got a group of 6 on order at my lfs, so hopefully I can start growing them out for breeding soon. Have you noticed anything different with care for them than the regular bristlenose? I’ve read that some people think they’re more sensitive.
its amazing how much more concise your videos are than MD's, lol. i plan on building a paludarium in the future with some shrimp and nano fish in the water section. would you recommend a shrimp specific food, or would the biofilm and left over nanofish food that sinks be enough for them?
Both my tanks are very heavily planted with large communities of different fish, shrimp and snails, so overfeeding, underfeeding and some in the tanks missing out is a constant worry to me... my water usually tests okay and I don't get any fish losses so I must be almost right....
There is not a lot you can do. I used to have a discus that would eat algae wafers all the time. You just have to think of how you can stop it. I ended up planting plants to stop the discus getting to the space where the Bristlenose hung out.
Not me having this conversation with you a couple weeks back 😂 … Oh and I’ve cut the guppies feed down and they still aren’t eating their young 😭🙈 ah well… anyone want some gorgeous coloured guppy juveniles? 😬
Could you do species video on Clown plecos? I have one and only see him once every 2 weeks at best 😆 but I have always wondered about food etc as you never see him at feeding time
Hahaha if I ever see mine I'll make one. Generally they will eat a varied diet so algae wafers, pellets, some veggies and some frozen food just keep rotating the food.
Talking about feeding. I see you have dwarf water lettuce. Mine are growing very, very slow. Not dying, just slow. My crypt parva is growing quicker. And that plant is next level slow. The Amazon frog bite is doing fine. Maybe make a detailed video about how to grow them properly.
Thanks for the video, Matt. I got into aquascaping last year (because I was inspired by MD, haha) and I was so worried about the feeding topic. I used to feed every other day at first I think it was not enough. Now I feed every day and because my snail population is not exploding and the fish are healthy I think I do it right. I love the hobby so much that I have 4 tanks and thinking about another one in the future for Multis. Was the shell dweller tank in the video the one you put together with MD? I would like to know how it's doing and would love to see a video about shell dwellers, especially Multis.
Which of those NT Labs foods (probiotic, nano and nano crumb) float. I can't seem to find any info then you do a video with all 3 😂✌️💜 Do you ever feed live food?
Oh interesting I'm yet to find a fish that won't go for the crumbs. I was wandering round the shop the other day trying it in different tanks and everything went mad for it.
Gr8 detailed video... For every fish keepers.. One question# Which feed is best for rainbow fish (daily meal).. Please guide with brand name... Available brands around my place are hikari, Tetra, WA n other Chinese brands
Excellent vid Matt. Thanks for answering the ago old question how much/often to feed. One question when you say eyeball are you talking just what you can see ie the flat bit or do you mean the whole sphere? TIA😊💙🐡🐠🐟
Thanks alot for replying back @@FishShopMatt So at least they are not like Severum fish which destroy all plant life in an aquarium. I will try go get a group of five as I love these fish. They have a great personality and they really seem to be a happy fish. Keep up the good work.
Great content. Just took up fish keeping last month and can across your videos shortly after. One question I had that I didn’t hear you cover was feeding specifically for crayfish, do you let them just clean the tank or can you put something directed for their diet ?
Thank you! I would always feed something for crayfish. It will help with moulting and general health, also stop them possibly going after fish. Any sinking food will give them something to eat and then shrimp or snail food will give them some extra calcium.
Hey Matt, great information. I have been using two different types of "Repashy" fish food. Soilent greens and Grub Pie for the past maybe 8 years. Have amazing results. Have you ever tried them? The soilent green is like crack for my mbuna
Idk how much to feed my fish and shrimp. But when I feed em nothing is left. No matter how much I feed. The shrimp have a hiarcy like ants. As soon as the food touches the bottom or plants the shrimp will swarm it, the larger shrimp chase after my fish. I think there's thousands in there
Not a quetion related to fish feeding but i thought u might see this and possibly have a answer. If trim 1 or a couple leaves from my amazon sword will it help it maybe grow a little faster?
I’m not Matt but can give you an answer. 😅 They’re called shrimp cubes. I think Matt said he’s put them in there to grow some bio film/algae on them. They provide extra surface area for a natural food source for shrimp. As well as other things. So hopefully we get to see Matt setting up a new shrimp tank very soon.
Matt, could you help on a matter of holiday feeding. We plan a weeks break and there is nothing that I can see that is suitable for top, middle and bottom feeders all in one tank. Not in a position to purchase automatic feeders as I have a number of tanks. Could you offer any advice please. Many thanks, John

What a brilliant video. specifically started looking for tiny pellets when i bought my chili rasboras. aiming for about 2 pellets per fish per day. give or take... have some shrimp in there too. works fine for now.
Thank you! I was the same, used to try and search for a tiny food for tiny fish
Thanks so much for this video!
Refreshing and solid advice. Thanks for sharing ❤
I absolutely love your Snow White bristlenose. I’ve got a group of 6 on order at my lfs, so hopefully I can start growing them out for breeding soon. Have you noticed anything different with care for them than the regular bristlenose? I’ve read that some people think they’re more sensitive.
Thank you, I would say they are a little slower growing and as long as they're from a good stock then sensitivity doesn't seem to be an issue.
Great stuff! Loving the vibe
Glad you enjoy it!
its amazing how much more concise your videos are than MD's, lol. i plan on building a paludarium in the future with some shrimp and nano fish in the water section. would you recommend a shrimp specific food, or would the biofilm and left over nanofish food that sinks be enough for them?
Hahaha thank you. I always try and feed my shrimp and clean up crew. You don't have to go crazy but once or twice a week is fine.
@@FishShopMatt ah ok cool so same as a terrestrial CuC
Both my tanks are very heavily planted with large communities of different fish, shrimp and snails, so overfeeding, underfeeding and some in the tanks missing out is a constant worry to me... my water usually tests okay and I don't get any fish losses so I must be almost right....
It is a hard game to play the only thing is to keep an eye on everyone and vary the food as much as possible. But it sounds like you're doing fine.
What stick on food do you use please
😱😍👍 Thanks for all the helpful information. Love this channel! 🤩😁👍
Thank you so much!
Best food for discus? Mine unfortunately don't take pellets so i have to give them frozen blood worm cubes or goat heart mix cubes
Try some pellets soaked in the defrosted frozen food as it may take on the smell and taste and be a bit more appealing.
On a semi-related note, what do you do when a fish goes after the "wrong" food? (As an example, a carnivorous fish going after algae wafer.)
Hahahaha oh yeah, this video was already in the making I think so maybe it was on my mind.
@@FishShopMatt well I’m now out of ideas - apart from giving them away lol
Great video
Great video again Matt
Glad you enjoyed it
I just love your content . Keep it up bro !!!
As always enjoyed your video.
Do you have a video on low maintenance, no water change aquarium?
Not yet but will do soon.
Another informative awesome video! ❤
Thanks so much!
Got some plans for a fish file on multis at some point in the future. They are doing very well.
@@FishShopMattthat's great to hear. Thank you.
Great video
Which of those NT Labs foods (probiotic, nano and nano crumb) float. I can't seem to find any info then you do a video with all 3 😂✌️💜
Do you ever feed live food?
They all float for a bit of time and then will sink slowly.
I don't often feed live food unless I know where it came from.
@FishShopMatt sorry to be a pain but which of the 3 would you recommend for green Neon tetras?
Mine don't go near the micro crumb, they much prefer bug bites. I try to feed once every two days. Cheers for the video Matt
Oh interesting I'm yet to find a fish that won't go for the crumbs. I was wandering round the shop the other day trying it in different tanks and everything went mad for it.
@@FishShopMatt yeah it's so weird. Everything I've seen on your channel and others they love it. Maybe a bad batch, none of them touch it 😭
New sub here, great videos Matt. Have you tried Omega One dries food before? I wish they told it in the UK!
TIA😊💙🐡🐠🐟
Thank you! I go with the bit you can see, this way you are underfeeding. If you need to you can always put a little more in.
@@FishShopMatt Thanks!
Would you consider doing a fish file on otocinclus fish?
Nice to see Festivum in your tank. Do they destroy plants ? Will anubias and Javafern survive the festivums pls ? many thanks
Thank you, yeah they seem to be fine with most hardy tough plants. I've tried some stems and smaller softer plants and they do get eaten.
Thanks alot for replying back @@FishShopMatt So at least they are not like Severum fish which destroy all plant life in an aquarium. I will try go get a group of five as I love these fish. They have a great personality and they really seem to be a happy fish. Keep up the good work.
Over feeding can cause clogged hang on filter problems also
Great content.
Matt holy shit thank you I was literally just wondering this last night.
Idk how much to feed my fish and shrimp. But when I feed em nothing is left. No matter how much I feed. The shrimp have a hiarcy like ants. As soon as the food touches the bottom or plants the shrimp will swarm it, the larger shrimp chase after my fish. I think there's thousands in there
Sounds like you have a very efficient clean up crew.
ty
Not a quetion related to fish feeding but i thought u might see this and possibly have a answer. If trim 1 or a couple leaves from my amazon sword will it help it maybe grow a little faster?
Great video. What are those cube things you have at the front corner of your tank? Decorations?
I’m not Matt but can give you an answer. 😅 They’re called shrimp cubes. I think Matt said he’s put them in there to grow some bio film/algae on them. They provide extra surface area for a natural food source for shrimp. As well as other things. So hopefully we get to see Matt setting up a new shrimp tank very soon.
@@Twinkley1981 thank you. :)
Thank you for answering, yeah shrimp tank incoming at some point soon.
Hey Matt! what type of gloves are safe to wear cleaning an aquarium?
