- I wanted to create something different with this scape and show that it's not all about big rocks and bits of bogwood. That's what makes aqua scaping and fishkeeping fun; the massive variation of styles and tastes there are out there. As long as the fish are well cared for and the person enjoys it that's the main things to look at in aqua scaping.
Let me know in the comments what other objects you think could work in an aquascape?
All my aquariums run on @NTLabsOfficialSite products, the plant food has been very useful in this aquarium.
Plants used:
Bacopa monnieri compacta
Alternanthera cardinalis
Hygrophila pinnatifida
Bucephalandra theia green
Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo'
Eleocharis Acicularis
Cryptocoryne parva
Fish used:
Panda Guppy
Hardscape:
Ikea bowls
Lava stone (Black)

I think this looks cool! Also totally agree with you about letting ppl try what they like. As long as the fish are happy and the person is happy about what they accomplished I can't understand ppl being negative trying to tear them down. We should be celebrating the diversity and creativity of others. Thanks for sharing yourself with us Matt.
Absolutely spot on! The hobby we have is amazing at bringing happiness into your home and then people want to try and tear it down! No time for negativity!
No matter what anybody says you just can't beat guppies.
When I saw those bowls going in I thought Matt had finally lost it, but seeing it complete it does look awesome.
Hahahaha I lost it ages ago
At first I thought this was quite corny to have dishes in the aquarium but when you were done with it Its quite unique!! I love the different tiers of the bowls. What a great idea!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a fun little aqua scape. I love the contrast of the colors from the plants against the colors of the bowls. Very cool that you put the panda guppies in this one. Great job as always!
ONE PLUG. I'm in heaven.
I thought I'd absolutely hate that idea, being into natural looking tanks, but, actually, it looks really quite good!
I used this for a grow-out tank, being able to lift the plants out of the way made catching the fish so much easier than fighting plants in the substrate when it is time for the little fish to move on
This has rejuvenated my imagination regarding my tanks. Long term it can get boring. This opens a world of possibilities and I’m excited to design something like this. Thank you so much ❤
Exactly what scaping is all about. You need to have fun and something like this is great for that.
Im five minutes in and im already OBSESSED with this, its got me so excited for my next tank. Love love love that its something different!
That would be a spectacular shrimp tank. Velvet blue dream neocaradinia would look fantastic with those bowls.
Being a fan of natural tanks myself, I was surprised how much I loved the way this turned out! It is really very pretty. That monte carlo is going to look amazing once it grows over the edge of the bowls and drapes down. Thanks so much for sharing.
I love the bowl idea but 3 bowls is even better actually! Great little nano scape
I have to admit that I almost left, glad I stuck around. It turned out pretty cool. Nice work Matt.
I like it! I was thinking you could break the fourth bowl and add the pieces to the scape. I really like the tank and the streamlined all-in-one plug concept.
One plug man. I can't believe it. I invented that in my own head last year.
That came out much better than I thought it would. lol ... Good point about exploring your own creative ideas, and who cares what people may think, as long as you like it.
It's really beautiful, Matt. I think you should do a big tank decorated with plants in (safe for the fish) charity shop items like teapots and cups--as you mentioned you'd seen in the past. I do think the tank needs some life at the bottom, though. Shrimp? Corries? I love what you do, Matt. I have learned so much. And I don't even have a tank. I just watch to relax.
The wife always knows! 🙂 Most landscapes are really "contrived." And there is not a thing wrong with that! The plantings in the bowls remind me so much of my garden. I used to teach horticulture classes once upon a time, and I had a student who called this style "kerplunkit" landscaping, where you just kerplunk plants into the garden it a total random fashion. The best part is it almost always works and looks fantastic. As do your bowls. I love the idea and the outcome is amazing. Keep 'em coming, Mate. ~Ron
Super cute scape! It's fun to see something different. I'm more of an all natural aquascaper too, but it's cool to see how more man made styles can actually really work, and not look too kitschy.
I love aquascapes that put a little bit of man made objects into it, its not entirely unreasonable to imagine like a south asian river tank having some broken pots, shards of vases or other things in it. The fish certainly won't mind and happily accept such hiding spots.
My main tank has this cheap broken flower pot in it I bought at my local aquaristic store, with the flowering anubis sticking out on top and its roots sticking to the in and outside of the pot, it looks like nature has reclaimed it.
It's really the context that can make these plastic decoration look beautiful, I bet it would be even possible with the right sort of plantation to make these Spongebob decorations look amazing in a planted tank. So if you or MD ever feel like giving yourself a real aquascaping challenge, try to incorporate those decoration toys and try to make them beautiful!
The "ahhh??" And then sweeping the substrate onto the ground is my brain every day. I'll need to vacuum anyway. 😂
So relatable.
Also, love this setup. ❤
What a great pairing between the fish and the scape!
Wow, I really love the look with the bowls in there! I never would've thought to put decorative bowls in there to be used as such! I really like this set up sure. Thanks Matt, for another awesome set up, thinking outside the box!
This is so fun!
This is absolutely adorable and I think may need to do it immediately!
I think this underwater pot garden is a cute 😄 If someone else wants to recreate this, I would advice them to stay away from older ceramics, though, because those might leech heavy metals into the water. Food safety standards have not always been what they currently are!
This is a cool little scape and inspiring! Trying something different pays off.
Just have fun and see where it takes you!
Pretty cool idea well thought out
Nice, cool scape. 👍
LOVE IT! I have done a very similar scape about a year ago, and it's still lovely.
I love it!! Something different and the bowls are beautiful and a pretty accent to any room! Bowl colors matching a rooms theme so many things you could do with this. Wood was the perfect accent to the bowls!! Nice job Matt!!
I like it, a lot! If I had the cash, I'd be replicating it. Nice one :)
The pottery tank is so unique and different I really like it a lot. Very cool idea.
You almost made a freshwater reef with this build in a way. I wasn’t sure about this but looked cool in the end. 9/10
Thank you, yeah it is definitely a bit different
I love this, what a great idea!🐟
I have gravel in my tank. So I got two large glass bowls and used Fluval soil, topped with a little gravel for two of my plants. Works out really well. I have one sitting on top a cave and the other is set in the gravel. 😊
What a great idea. I really like it. It will look even better when the carpeting plants start to spill over the edges of the bowls.
I was so skeptical at first but ended up absolutely loving it. Wow! Really got me thinking...
I love this scape, and the story about the tea shop owner - that is so clever to use tea cups and saucers as decoration! I've been working on a similar idea using one of those skull-shaped vodka bottles with the top cut off as a planter basin for a future scape I'm planning.
I really like this. Well done.
"I can just shut the door and Katey will never know" Oh trust me.. She already knows it. She probably heard you push it onto the carpet, the sound of it hitting the floor. :p
Good video Matt and what an interesting build. It looks good. You should definitely do more of these. I want a tank with this type of build now :D
I love that Idea. It came out so nice. I kept fish many years ago. I've just recently wanted to get back into the hobby but adding live plants this time, something I couldn't do before because my fish wouldn't let plants stay planted.
Very much liking this little tank, will be watching for the follow-up in a few weeks. Novel scape too - not really my 'thing' but definitely a neat look.
Yeah not my thing normally but it's quite refreshing to change it up a bit.
A great little tank for a kitchen worktop, and really easy to re-scape by just pulling out the bowls and re-planting. A few red shrimp in there would really pop.
Definitely going to be adding some little shrimp to it.
My new favorite FSM video. (I also like FSM as a marketing name.)
Yeah I like the FSM thing too
I had my doubts at the start, but I really like the results. The black sand and lava rocks look great with the bowls.
I did this with all my plants in terracota pots when I had to move house. Kept going with it in my quarantine tanks, super easy to take them out when you need to if tank needs treating. Plus beneficial bacteria loves the terracotta and so do the bristlenose.
You have matched the scaping and the fish perfectly! Using containers is such an innovative design! I would love to try a potting bench version using various size terra cotta pots. Love that new tank as well.
What a perfect little tank set up, Matt your really so enjoyable to watch, love your voice and how it seems to just relax you and invite you in. Your doing great never a disappointment. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I like it! I'm a less is more kinda person. Where placement and shape is more important. So nice to see a modern scape!
Yeah I think you could have some fun with playing around with different ideas.
I LOVE your design. I agree with you. If you like it….do it, since you’re the one that will be looking at it in your home!
Reminds me of a tree with hanging baskets., Beautiful,
Not my kind of scape but I do appreciate it, it looks beautiful
I love the idea of planting into bowls or terracotta pots for an aquarium. Great look, Matt
I absolutely adore this. I’m a pink fiend so I wish they sold these bowls in a pink print, but that’s me. I’m inspired. I have a 14 gallon (53 liter) cube I want to scape and now I know what direction I want to go in.
How clever to incorporate those bowls
That is just so cute…but I love anything Japanese. The panda guppies complement it perfectly….🎏
This looks great Matt. We like your style! Be yourself.
just need a little monte carlo creeping over the edge of the bowl for a really nice effect. love this look
Great setup Matt, had me thinking of themed tanks which took me into another direction when i used to watched Orange County Choppers making themed motorcycles. Nothing wrong with thinking outside the box...
Perfect timing, just got to a friend's house who just got into aquariums, putting this on the TV right now😂 Your videos is a big help!
That's awesome, thank you for the support!
You’ve got my mind running 10 to the dozen now cos my 12yr old son says fish are boring and he doesn’t want his fish tank anymore with 6 white clouds and a fat goldfish swimming around in it I was needing inspiration and now iv got it. I’ll av to use soft fabric style plants but it’s doable!
I absolutely LOVE this one! I never would've thought to try this! It looks stunning Matt ❤️
At 1st I thought you had totally lost the plot but I actually think it's an amazing setup.
A great video as always, keep them coming 😜✌️💜
Thanks, will do!
Absolutely gorgeous! I'm digging the 3 in 1 plug! Thank you!
It all comes down to imagination really. Iv used black and white ceramic bowels that I carefully cut holes into, turned upside down for caves for cichlids. They looked fantastic with Java on top and their roots came down around the bowls 😁 Iv also used crystal cut bowls etc from 2nd hand shops, upside, held up on one side with piece of rock. Again cichlids coz I'm a cichlid lover 🤣 They sent off a "sparkle" effect from different cuts on glass 🥰
That’s so cool Matt! It’s nice to see something different, there’s room for all different styles. I love those Panda Guppies! Really fun, thank you.
Looks very cool. I like it. :)
I'm glad you like it
I prefer the more natural scapes, but this does look cool.
Convenient timing considering I've got a 20g long tank to scape for my kids' guppy tank. Got me thinking. Thanks Matt!
Ooooo that could be interesting and fun to plant the bowls.
Love this tank... my favourite so far!
I like different styles like this. I made a scale model diorama in one of my tanks. I made a post apocalyptic themed gas station. Built a scale model car & a worn down building with plants taking over. I plan on doing another diorama tank soon!
Oh that sounds so so cool! Tag me if you post pictures online.
Beautiful tank! I like your creativity!
Woke up, picked up my phone, and your video notification comes in. Goodmorning Matt and family. Hope it's been a good one.
Good morning hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the enthusiasm! Really enjoy sitting back and seeing you have fun with the hobby!
If you end up liking this tank system, would be lovely to see how the filter works, do you need proprietary cartridges, can the flow be adjusted? How long is the light going to last? That kind of thing; I like the concept, so simple and a nice size. I like the message as well; it's your tank, as long as the fish are healthy, do what you want. Thanks Matt
The few seconds where you contemplated cleaning that surface before wiping it all on to the floor KILLED me, I relate so much 😅
Wow it turned out super cool. Thanks for sharing
I like this concept... I'd probably lean even more into Japanese look with a hashi red bridge and/or a Torii gate or do one of the bowls or multiple in Kintsugi with the gold seams
Looks fantastic 🤩
Honestly is fantastic and I thought about using my best coffee mugs as well. Those plants are going to look sick when grown, I love the buce. You really did a number here Matt, great scape.
Good show old chap 👍
This is why I watch you over others. It's supposed to be fun! And art and what you enjoy.
I have to admit, I'm in aqua hobby for like 10 years now and when I saw these bowls at the beggining my thought was you're going mad. I imagined it will look tacky/distasteful with these colors BUT it turned out really, I mean really nice. Something new, something fresh in the hobby, good job :D
Love the little bowls.....different.
Love the bowl scape.
We love Matt wooo
Woohoo thank you!
I like your style. The tank is beautiful & the panda guppy's are perfect for this tank!
I'll give you credit. I couldn't see where you were going with it from the start, but the finished product looks really good.
This is super different but it's unique and really pretty. Didn't think I would like it at first but you changed my mind! Been watching you and MD together for about a year now. Love watching both of your videos. A bit sad that you're not together as much anymore but cheering you on as you build your channel. Wishing you the a lot of success from across the pond.
I really like the look of this. I would think having the bowls will also make it easy to do any replanting too; you can just lift the bowl out and do what is needed and place it back into its designated spot. Great idea Matt. I think the bowls add another dimension that the wood, plants and sand can’t do. You may come across lots of different items that you want to try in future scapes. Great job!
Refreshing & Innovative! ~ Well Done Matt 🔥
I absolutely love this! I’m going to do a variation on my new tank setup. Thanks Matt! 😀
So, so beautiful - you did a great build 👍
The wall of foliage as a backdrop is a really nice touch!
That's so cool! Great choice of fish for it. They go well with the simple look, and blue bowls.
Thank you!
Love this tank. Super cool Matt!
That was an amazing video. I like that you were telling us to think out the box and to try something different. I need some black sand 😊
This is really nice! I’ve actually been designing and 3D printing all my decorations and plant holders. I might be biased, but I really like the new/untraditional styles compared to more traditional scapes. I made a waterfall that uses a sponge filter as an air lift, magnetic plant holders for the sides, and even just simple shrimp breeding caves in cool styles. That’s just to name a few! Loving the new styles that pop up like the one you showed! Definitely sparks creative juices for nano tanks
