I love your bad maps videos!! This one however did not work for me. I hope it is the last video you do in this format, I would prefer it if you go back to the original format of rating them. Have an excellent day!!
We were simulcasting this to a stadium audience of 164,000 here in Florida. The 1 view and like was not very representative of this unfortunately. Bad data takes all forms! 😀
This series loses something when it's rushing past all the maps to get through them as fast as possible, rather than lingering on any of them and pointing out mistakes that might be missed at first glance.
Absolutely. Everything was so high quality otherwise. The really fun thing that I honestly expected from this video would be extra ragging on the maps and funny skits when it comes to comparing the 'badness' of the map. That could've been super entertaining, but I was really quite dissappointed at just how little talk there was about... Well, maps.
IIRC, The Crew 2 needed a map that you can cross in a vehicle you drive yourself in a reasonable time, while keeping cities and other cool terrain features big enough. Scaling would not be able to accomplish both goals at the same time.
The Crew 1s map is scaled one actually and they changed it bc it's not accurate to the actual places you can drive and how big they are actually compared to the other sides of the maps so it made sense to actually make the real map of the open world.
Yeah, the Crew series made the map the way it was so you could drive across the map in mere several hours rather than several days, having a map with accurate scale would take far too long to travel across, and with the first Crew game being for the Xbox360 would be far too large, especially for The Crew 2 where there are no areas in the map where you can’t go
Loved the humor of this one, mate. Especially discount Jerma985 in the audience lmao. Though, I am surprised you didnt dedicate, like, a minute per winner to rip into the cartography crimes. Still, a fantastic video all around~ Hope this continues in 2023!
11:10 I think they heard “Nagasaki and Hiroshima are on separate islands, both of which are seperate from japans’s main island. Oh yeah, there’s also an extra one at the northernmost part” and then just came up with what they thought it would look like rather than getting an actual map of Japan or even looking at one first.
I'm just glad Axis & Allies dodged the podium for the "worst game map" award. Great video. Loved the running gag of the audience having "one guy you dragged off the street".
IIRC that oversized new england us map is for state shaped magnet collectors (Thats why DC is capitol shaped) so the wonkiness makes sense there (to scale, the new england states would be too small)
The “I was paid to be here!” made me laugh, but the “…Right after the sponsor break.” “WHAT?!” made me completely crack up. 😆 I loved this video! Can’t wait for the Second Annual one next year!
Some Ideas for 2023: 1. Make the video lasts at least 30 minutes long like a real award show and add more categories for horrible map awards, like those of worst fantasy maps, most sloppy borders, worst war maps, worst map decoration, worst topological maps, worst bordergore, etc. 2. Maybe consider expanding it into something like a full blown award of all topics you have covered in, like history, geography, war, and diplomacy. Make it an "ETS Award" or "Tigerstar Award". 3. Add some more commentary on why this is the worst map ever made. Otherwise, this video is very decent, apart from sponsor breaks which have to be refined just for this occation. Also, consider some sort of "Viewers Worst Map" award where the people themselves choose which one is the worst map ever, and many viewers have considered to add some sort of viewers' submission or if that already exists, a permalink to it.
Interesting idea, but not such great execution. I get that these maps are some you've had in the past, but if you don't say anything about why the map is bad, then some might not understand why it's bad. You're just showing maps and cracking some jokes. I guess it's entertaining to some.
The Crew 2 map looks dope af, I don't know what you're talking about. Is it accurate? Hell nah. Is it cool? Hell yeah, and that makes up for it. That truck-driving simulator map of the US/NA is terrible, it is both obscenely inaccurate and hella boring.
2:50 This seems to just be a map of the deserts of the world. The lines are weird, and it omits many islands, but there aren't any major deserts on most of those omitted islands. That's a reasonably clear map for the purpose really.
Though I love the stage and award show setting, the fact that you only briefly mentioned the maps and their respective problems kind of takes away from the whole experience
How can we submit maps again? Well not, again again, don't want to submit a map that has been sent before, it's a saying that emphasizes that there is a way to submit it but either 'someone' missed it or forgot it ...
I like to share your map videos with my mum, who teaches history and geography for high school. You'd be amazed at just how hard it is to find an actually good map resource lmao.
6:00 I think I've seen that "map" sold in souvenir stores and it's used to display a collection of state fridge magnets. I get that the magnets can't be to scale but Jesus Christ...
I'm mot even sure the best map is an actual map. It appears to just be a piece of abstract art conveying the essence of the two cities. Also Austria Hungry is probably the funniest bit of this entire video and I am afraid I will actually start referring to the country that way...
If you do this again, PLEASE include an explanation. I barely see any issues with the shipping route one. I've barely even started the video so maybe you did include one, but if you did, could you do it right after announcing the winner and not at the end? Also, for the first one, I see the issues in both, but it's not clear why one is worse than the other--in fact, I think the Netherlands one is worse. So, an explanation would be nice.
I know you want me to smash that like button and smash that subscribe button but I swear I'm gonna smash everything if I hear that damn music one more time.
This video doesn’t work well when just listening. I’m not blind, I just like listening to videos when doing household chores. Usually your bad maps videos include a description of why they’re bad.
I had a textbook map of the feudal era where France owned Catalonia and the Basque, the reconquista was complete, Iberia and Italy were one country each, and the HRE owned the Baltics.
I think you should add sources and explain where the maps come from. Anybody can make their own bad map in paint in 5 minutes, so it would be better to show in the video that the maps were actually made with serious intentions
Personally I would have given the final award to the textbook map where italy is the entire mediterranean and scotland is a seperate island to england, but I have no capability to argue against a professional bad map analyst
I don't agree with the crew 2 being the worst videogame map of the year. The thing is that racing games like that are mostly focussed on The cities. This means that you would need way more empty space between the in game cities if you want to make it more realistic. This is why the bay area looks so big for example. They wanted to give you the opportunity to race through a big part of San Francisco without the need to drive for 50 real life minutes to get there. It's the same with Florida where they wanted to give you a big chunk of the swamps and the everglades, but this wouldn't be possible. If they kept the real scale of Florida. You shouldn't Forget that the game never had the intention to be a exact copy of the real life USA. It is a videogame after all. I know you literally said this in the video, but the farming game was straight up lying about the location of cities while also having a terrible coloring scheme for the states where some neighbouring states had the exaxt same color. That one was way worse, it's not even close.
I agree with you and actually the first game had the actual US map and it was confusing bc the games map was completely different and it led to many confusions with the 1:1 scaling so instead they just put the actual map of the game. It looks bad maybe but it's definitely fun to drive and feels realistic enough without being boring
I had this map in school and it had made the Atlantic ocean 2x bigger, left out Panama, crimea, Taiwan, etc. It was showing the biome of the world and drew the mountain biome in the alps as circular. 💀
I like the idea and am excited for next year HOWEVER the pacing of the video was honestly unbearable it was hard to keep a long with and the voice for nominees didn't work honestly. That said I still enjoyed the video I just think there's a lot that could be done to improve
I caught a foam globe toy at Mardi Gras. No borders, just green land and blue water. Here's what's missing: -Alaska -All the Caribbean Islands -The Arabian peninsula -Morocco -Anything north of Canada -Greenland -Iceland -Anything between Australia and China -Japan -New Zealand -The Korean peninsula -Sri Lanka -Literally any lake in the world, even the Caspian Sea And... **drumroll** _-The entire CONTINENT OF EUROPE._ Atrocious. Clearly they were concerned with quantity over quality. 0/10
Centuries ago there was a German mapmaker with the name , Ballhorn '. He wrote the names of Towns, Rivers, Mountains totaly wrong, especialy nongerman ones. He , the mapmaker, is the orging of German verb , verballhornen', when someone writes a Name or other Word from a nongerman language totally wrong.

Definitely, hearing the repetitive music and pausing every couple seconds to squint at the maps is pretty annoying.
Absolutely. Everything was so high quality otherwise. Noted. I didn't do it as much because most maps were already featured in previous episodes. If I do this again next year I'll linger longer.

Imagine if we'd send an actual worst map award to an official textbook company.
you know what we should actually do that
IIRC, The Crew 2 needed a map that you can cross in a vehicle you drive yourself in a reasonable time, while keeping cities and other cool terrain features big enough. Scaling would not be able to accomplish both goals at the same time.

it's like some medieval scribe heard a description of an elephant and decided to flex his literacy skills
