Despite Spanish Colonization, practically no one speaks spanish anymore here in the Philippines (from what i know as a city boy anyway)
Yeah, aside from Chavacano, you won't hear anyone speaking Spanish here anymore.
Some people do. There is even a Spanish creole called Chavacano, which is spoken in Zamboanga, among other places. But sadly Spanish mostly dissappeared from the Philippines thanks to the USA. ¡Viva las Filipinas hispánicas!

Sometimes I'm so dumb, for the US one I was like "yeah it's missing all the territories like Puerto Rico and it looks a bit poorly photoshoped", forgetting the existence of Alaska, the largest state in the US.
1:52 The Australia map is missing New Zealand (as usual with other maps)…definitely not a nine. And the Papua New Guinea border isn't that great either, the border is pretty much straight, while that shows the Fly River portion bulges out more than it actually does.
4:11 Regarding the Philippines, while they were formerly a part of the Spanish Empire, Spanish is pretty much not spoken there besides the area around Zamboanga and Cavite where Chavacano (a Spanish Creole) is spoken. English dominated once the US took over the islands.
And 'Australia' just refers to the country, not the continent. It should be 'Australasia' or even better 'Oceania'.

That first map was actually used in my 8th grade history class, and while my teacher never used it to describe territories held, the fact it would ever be used in an academic setting at all is a bit concerning

@@emiledlund9559 I don’t think it was my teachers call, and the class almost exclusively focused on colonial life and the American revolution. I’m pretty sure I was the only person in that class who knew the Russian empire was even a thing before the map was ever shown. Fwiw she only used the map twice for like 5 seconds for reasons outside of saying “this is what the world looked like”. I think it was more like “Thomas Paine wrote common sense, which basically said *pulls down map* why should an island here govern an area over here” *rolls up map*
@@ethanpkaiser Yea I would definitely argue that maps in general doesnt really matter in 1-9 grade history. And since grade schools budget regularly i bad with a new map is a cutback on something else i guess priority where somewhere else. Rightly so.

In the book "Stalins Wars" written by Geoffrey Roberts author shows 2 pretty bad maps where he forgets that Germans and Hungarians carved up czechoslovakia before atacking USSR or draws really weird Romuno-Hungarian borders I could send you photos of this somewhere
5:42 Sure Japan is bigger than it should be, sure the Caribbean islands are missing, sure Iceland is missing, but at least this map has New Zealand unlike the Australia map you showed at 1:06. That map aside, an American politician posting the one at 4:33 is just sad...it says A LOT about a country's education system when they can't even name all the states within its territory. Erasing Alaska and Hawaii is the equivalence of saying the Alaskan natives and Native Hawaiians don't exist which...isn't a good look especially if you don't admit the US overthrew the Hawaiian kingdom and now the natives have to deal with not having their homes and tourism development now dominating the place.
I'm pretty sure that map from that particular and peculiar politician is stolen from a "What aliens in movies see when planning to invade Earth" meme (which, in THAT context, would make the map considerably more accurate)
I didn't know about that meme! It would make perfect sense, since in movies, it's always the US that gets invaded by aliens for some reason. Probably because the movies are from our country!

I don't know, I think if you wrote a petition to stop giving Puerto Rico money, a lot of Americans would sign it. In fact, you could probably even phrase it as "Stop giving Puerto Rico money until it democratizes" and a lot of Americans would just think it's a foreign dictatorship instead of an American colony that doesn't get full political autonomy.

The Philippines recognise Chavacano, which is a Spanish dialect. So it wouldn't be too far-fetched either.
its not a spanish dialect. its a spanish creole. much of its words are spanish but the grammar base and many loanwords are from the local austronesian languages it has most contact with

The 2:00 Australia map is missing NZ and part of PNG
For the first Map, Portugal didn't control this part of east Africa but the sultanat of Zamzibar pledge to the king of Portugal since the cap was passed by Vasco de Gama. Even if it wasn't a de facto thing because zambibar gave to Portugal a tribute only once ( to my knokedge ) and didn't participe toi levy it was by official tittle ans Map a part of the portugese empire.

For the next video. Maybe add The French map from 17th century. That Putin declared that Ukraine never existed. But the map actually shows "Ukraine, country of Cossacks" (Vkraine ou Pays des Cosaques). Not sure he failed and didn't notice that or he don't care anyway.

To add on to the chorus of people commenting about Spanish not being widely used in the Philippines:
As observed by Americans during colonization, Spanish was the language of the upper-class gentry while the masses spoke in their regional languages. It was mostly used as a lingua franca, which was slowly displaced in its niche by English over the course of the 20th century, losing official status around the 1970s. According to my parents, by the time they were growing up in the 60s, the use of Spanish had been relegated to old money families. My parents only had to learn Spanish in university and have minor proficiency with it. By the time I went to school in the Philippines in the 2000s, Spanish language had a reputation for being a relic of the past, virtually nonexistent.
The latest census data from 2020 shows that only 0.5% of the country's population have any proficiency in Spanish. I think just based on the math, those figures don't include the creole Chavacano, but even then I'm still fairly confident the percentage of Spanish speakers in the Philippines is below 1%. So yeah, no. Not a Spanish speaking country at all (currently,) gonna have to dock you a point for that. 9/10. :)

Ah, I remember that time when Russia conquered all of the Nordics, Central Europe and Italy.
That map of Australia implies that New Guinea is part of Australia, and it also gets the border between New Guinea and Indonesia wrong. And if you argue that it's a map of Oceania, it should show at least New Zealand and the Solomon Islands on it from that perspective, no? A 9/10 feels a bit too generous.
And in defence of the Oakland logo map, the detail in the US is a lot higher than the surrounding area. I think it's supposed to be blurry and distorted. I guess there's some symbolic meaning to it, like, idk, Oakland bringing the world into focus or something? It's kinda dumb, but if the entire point of the map is that it's bad, it very much succeeds at that and should get a high grade instead of a low one.
Man you can't give a 5.5/10 to the 2nd maps I mean the moment when you include all western Europe and even Britain in Africa you erased any possibility to pass the test
The last one actually has some thematic overlap with Roman Mars' TED talk on flags (which is great, go watch it). Many flags, logos and seals are just plain horrible in both their aestetics and their symbolism.

Yes thank you mentioning the Holland thing. Eventhough are some Dutch people who call the Netherlands Hollend themselfs (mostly people from Amsterdam and other stupid people), it is wrong. It is like calling the USA Dakota, or more commonly said wrong: calling the UK England.
Until the world cup begins and everyone says Holland. You can hardly blane foreigners. Also in some languages, there simply isn’t a word for the Netherlands, or if there officially is, no one knows it
