I got the Canon adapter very early on with the circular polariser since it's a filter I've always loved and it is much easier to use with the thumb wheel rather than fiddling about on the front of the lens with a 77mm polariser. I'm not buying any new lenses now so the decision was easy. The polariser stays clean tucked away in the adapter and I'm very happy with the setup.
I bought the Viltrox and it worked intermittently. I returned it. I bought a Canon Basic adapter used for $150 and it works perfectly. I'm using it with big tele lenses worth thousands so the $50 premium was worth it to me. And I don't shoot with filters as I'm shooting sports.
Hi Todd, I recently found your channel, since then I can't stop watching your videos, you never fail to achieve the quality in everything, the light, mic, the content, thanks man for your advice
I ordered the controlling adapter from B&H, had to wait about 3 weeks to get it! Do not wait until they are in stock, you have to place a back-order as they get filled 1st.
This was good but you missed one from Commlite which has a tripod mount on it. I got my RP when they were still giving away the adapter but bought one of these anyway because of the mount. This allows me to put all of the lens weight on the adapter mount versus the camera mount. I know that the 70-200 and 150-600 have their own tripod collar mount but not the shorter ones and they can get heavy as well (especially the 2.8's). I just checked and B&H has it for $60. It's a basic - no drop in - model but I haven't had any problems yet. Good vid, glad I came across it.
Some USB cables are for charging only while some support both data transfer and charging (May be this is the reason for the your issue with the cables)
I didn't know about that Breakthrough drop-in filter adapter! I have the Canon version to be able to enable variable ND. If it's reasonable to do so, you could probably do an update to this video with the Canon R5 C coming out. Waiting for mine to come in from Best Buy (it's delayed a bit). I have the Metabones speed booster EF to RF which I use to adapt my 24mm 1.4 to my Canon R (which I shoot most of my videos on). I just ordered the Viltrox to free up my Metabones for the RF C. I decided against getting the official Canon brand for now.
Very informative critique on the subject, straight to the point, with none of the usual hyperbole that seems to be the norm with these clips with the presenter waffling or from someone who thinks that they can speak english
A lot of micro USB cables have a large amount of plastic very close to the plug. The plug on the Viltrox adapter may not have enough room to allow these cables to seat completely.
Great Vlog, My first reaction to the subject was unnecessary, and then i realised that the Canon RF:Ef adapters are out of stock, clearly canon have struck gold with the R series cameras and the demand is exceeding supply. thanks advice is on point as always, thanks for sharing
Thanks Todd. It is June 2021 and I just ordered the basic adapter directly from Canon online. Shipping promised within 5 business days. B&H and Precision Camera (Autin, Tx) are my go-to stores and neither have them or can give a projected date. Canon apparently having supply chain issues with their dealer partners.
I have the Laowa 9mm f/2.8 which is a powerhouse of a lens for shooting real estate photos and videos. However, there are times where I miss having the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 shooting houses with poor natural light on cloudy days. Unfortunately, that lens is no where near wide enough for real estate. Viltrox mentions on their website that certain third party lenses such as the Laowa 9mm will work on the Canon M50. I get many who say, as long as it's an EF lens, and has the red dot, not the white, it should work. While some like yourself say it won't. I'll know next week for sure when it arrives. If not, I'll be returning it, and selling the Canon M50 along with the Laowa lens. And moving on to the Canon R50 with the Laowa 9mm f2.8 RF mount lens. RF glass is vastly superior to EF, and the R50 performs much better in low light than the M50, in addition to having amazing 6k down sampling to 4k which looks professional. And no 4k @30fps crop!
I have the no frills adapter.. but will be buying the one with the filters.. I will buy the Variable ND version.. definitely worth it. I bought the EOS-R in Sept on sale.. I plan on picking up the R5 later this year. I'll be using my ef glass for awhile.. I'd say the drop filter adapter is a great idea.. Here's why.. for filmmakers.. cine glass.. so many EF cine glass out there..
Very interesting and informative video, thank you. As someone thinking of moving to the Canon mirrorless system (from DSLR) I have been quite shocked at how little I would get for my old EF (L) glass. For that reason I think I will stay with my current lens line-up and use one of the third party adapters.
You might have learned this by now, but if not, micro USB cables differ in that some of them are one way and some are two way. A basic charging cord only lets power go to the device, but a cable designed to connect a device to a computer to transfer images and is also capable of charging is two way. Why? I don't know, but that's how it is.
I just cancelled my order with breakthrough photography yesterday. I ordered the drop in adapter, vnd set, cpl and infrared drop in filters. After 8 months of waiting, I gave up. They have not produced anything yet and while it sounds great, they should not be advertising want they cannot produce. So a heads up to anyone who might watch this and think breakthrough photography is a great option, be aware.
Thank you so much Todd. I’ve got an RP and recently purchased the Sigma 14-24 f 2.8 for vlogging. The Breakthrough Photography ND filter system is a godsend for me (especially with regards to the front element of that lens. I clicked on the link and what do you know, they deliver free all the way out here to Australia. I will be ordering this soon!
Good info, thank you. I was fortunate to get the basic EF/RF Canon adapter for my two EF lenses. Breakthrough has quality products. I own several of their filters. Great timing on their part. I wasn't aware of their options. Thanks!
Since you own Canon adapters, Breakthrough is offering buybacks on Canon's basic and drop-in filter adapters when you buy their adapter. Might be worth looking into if interested!
Gordon Liang in one of his reviews correctly notes that autofocus on his EF lens with adapter on new R5 was consistently slightly off and manual focus gave the full sharpness of the legacy EF. I find the same thing with several EF lenses including 85 f1.2 mii and newer 35 f1.4. Canon will have to kill off the legacy EF for them to make money on RF, so probably crippling the EF's full sharpness on newer bodies once they have more RF lenses to offer is likely. Keep an eye out folks.
For me this adapter has some problems with the connection with the body. At the beginning it was perfect but after two years with 1.5 year treated as a backup it seems to loose the connection time to time. Further the ring of the viltrox tends to stop working.
The Viltrox normal adapter is not bad, but not great. It's only advantage over the basic Canon adapter is that it has a tripod mount (which I think is where Canon screwed up.) The Viltrox control ring adapter has many bad reviews, most of which deal with being a "loose" fit. I went with the Viltrox basic adapter for the time being until I was able to get the Canon control ring version several months later.
The Canon adapters definitely feel more "fitted" compared to the Viltrox. In general, agreed. The Viltrox isn't bad by any means, it's just not as polished as the (more expensive) Canon options.
Hy the question may seem silly, but why do you need a filmware cable or an adapter if you only bridge the lens and the camera? Canon and Meike adapters do not have it
According to the Viltrox lens compatibility list, the Viltrox EF-R2 adapter should support a Tamron 18-400MM F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD B028. I am getting a black band around the perimeter of the viewfinder. Only a circular center actually shows the correct image. If I switch to the 1.6 crop mode, the entire viewfinder shows correctly. The instructions show that there is an EF-S Lens Mounting Index on the outside surface of the adapter approximately one CM to the right of the EF Lens Mounting Index. However, there are no explanations of how this mounting index is supposed to be used. Will I be permanently locked into the 1.6 crop mode or can I make some type of adjustment to allow for using the entire sensor? I have used this Tamron lens on a Canon 90D for about two years and it performs satisfactorily. I have had a Canon R5 for almost a day now.
Is it true you lose autofocus and speed of fps with adapters? Just curious cause the rf lens line is so expensive and limited. I'm considering getting an ef with an adapter.
Nope! These EF-RF lenses work well with a variety of EF lenses. Autofocus, image stabilization, it all just works. I use the adapters all the time with my Canon EF lenses and they work perfectly.
Have you taken a look at the Kolari EF-EOS R adapter? Price of the Kolari adapter plus filters is much less than going with Canon. Breakthrough Photography's adapter is unfortunately not shipping yet.
It seems that they removed the Viltrox EF-R2 firmware from their store, anyone know if I should be getting this adapter in 2024 of should I look for a different one.
They do not change. They are open air adapters just to get the lens at the right distance it was designed to be from the sensor/film. If they are made for full-frame. RF cameras allow for lenses made for crop sensors (such as EF-S) to be used. I guess the focal length (and angle of view) will be the same as if used on an EF-S camera but the camera still does the crop for you and only uses the center part. So for photography it's just a last resort.
It's bizarre how there is a shortage. It's like they were thinking to themselves "Hey, our (as of yet incomplete) RF lens are so good, who in the hell would want to use the EF lenses they already have?" Of course I wouldn't put the shortage as a way to still force people to buy RF lenses while still presenting themselves as the good guys who "at least made the adapters" beneath Canon.
Hi Todd. Thanks for the great video. I have Zeiss Prime lenses with Nikon mounts. Will they work if I use them with a Nikon to EF adapter on a EF to RF speedbooster?
Mmm...that might position the lens too far from the camera body / sensor to resolve the image correctly. Plus there may be communication issues. If someone else has tried please feel free to chime in!
@@dominey Thanks for the feedback. Really appreciate it. We will try and get a demo to do a test on and then I will definitely let you know the results. Thanks!

No iris control at all makes the Viltrox an expensive paperweight

Turn off lens distortion and vignetting corrections in the camera menu. For some reason tamrons don’t play nicely with canons built in lens correction.
The best adapter is the one you can buy.
Some micro cables are only for charging with zero data transmission and some do both.

Are you sure it's the adapter and not just the normal vignette you'd see at wide focal lengths like 24mm?
Turn off lens distortion and vignetting corrections in the camera menu. For some reason tamrons don’t play nicely with canons built in lens correction.
what if I have an ef body with an rf lens?
Unfortunately RF lenses can't be mounted on EF bodies.
does the adapter crop your sensor
No
@@len.whistler thank you for the feedback
That viltrox adapter failed me and their customer service is so bad pretty much non existent, save the money
why are your videos so dark?
2023 and still a shortage clearly Canon want you to buy RF lenses, hence the shortage!
Neither ! Just buy RF lenses
