Everyone seems to be watching this for school. I mean so am I except I found this on my own as research for a project. And as an aspiring artist I felt really touched by this. Certainly one of my favourite TED talks and definitely one I will come back to watch in the future!

I love painting, making art. And after few days I'm going to start my new college, I'll be making some new friends. So I'm watching this to be prepared to present the greatness of art to them, to make them fall in love with art
It baffles me how so many people have no idea what goes into art. That most people only see the surface of art, as drawing or painting and doesnt take a second thought to question what else goes into it. Art is everything, created with science, research, literature, critical thinking, anaylsis, courage, emotion, philosophy, psychology and social structure. It would be impossible to explain the importance of art in one lecture. Yet i am glad we are making an effort.
Why does art always have to critic society and attempt to start a revolution to be valid? I find the art that exposes the beauty of life leaves more of an impression on me. I think there is enough doom and gloom in the news and in society to begin with, we should give praise to artists who are brave enough to move against the current of negativity and instead create artwork that inspires people to be happy and look for the good in the world. I understand that there is a place for art that calls for change and represents important issues, but we shouldn't write off art that chooses instead to spread positivity. The old masters and most distinguished pieces of artwork didn't have to cry wolf to be considered valid. Van Gogh's "Starry Night" is still art. The Mona Lisa is still art. The Kiss is still art. If the art world had always adhered to the standards she speaks about in this video, then most of the art world's beloved paintings today would be considered useless.
I haven't watched the video yet but I know what you're saying. I'm an art student myself and feel the same. When I was given projects to make art on social issues I felt pressurised and still remain confused if all art work that an artist has to make, why is it necesssary to be on such topics, and why not about inspiring,uplifting people and their mind. Of course there are art works that's more positive but mostly the topic or visuals are about issues and all sorts of bad things that's happening around. @Solenne Songer
You are also right, and I understand where you are coming from. For me the key is that you are making art out of what moves *you*, whether that be viewed as negative or positive by anyone else. The point is, *you* as the individual feel strongly about it. That is the revolutionary act.
Art gives expression to what cannot be logically expressed, thereby expanding human horizons which would otherwise be confined into dull 3 dimensional reality bound by time.

Watching this for myself, no college. Just realizing now I've been in my career but have never taken an art class after 4th grade. Might be a good video for some direction for artistic expression for myself vs technical execution for work.
yes, I had to watch this for a college class, but I found it incredibly enthralling and found myself going back many times to fully take in what she said. truly an intelligent woman but she is also just speaking many truths about art. I don't agree with all of it, and there is lots she missed, but she did have some great points. my favorite part was when she said "the best art should ask you what you think, prompt you to ask questions, and put you into doubt".
I like the expression of Antony Gormley saying about art that it makes the world. Yes, that piece of paper, song, poems and whatever can change the world, even goes to make one.
I ... am surprised to find how much of her speech I disagree with, despite getting my BFA soon and conducting my senior thesis research on these central topics of the impacts of art. Art is not guaranteed to be wielded responsibly, ethically, or for all of these lovely ideals that she suggests it is. Not in the slightest. It /can/ be impactful and in many great instances it has influenced societal ideal shifts and revolution- but only when artists and viewers interact with a work with intent to bring about these results. And that is assuming that those intents are for such ideals as she holds at all. Art is a tool, a means to an end- be it societal change or an attempt to escape from society all together- but it is not possible for it to bring about these ends by itself. Just as a hammer is no use in building a house without a hand to wield it or a nail in wood for it to strike, so too can art be wielded to build something greater when used by a hand to make an effect and an object to receive that effect. Moreover I think it is nearly dangerous and irresponsible to not teach artists the ability of their work to have an effect, the ability of their hands to wield hammers, the ability of hammers to strike nails, and the ability of a nail to be struck. To simply list art as an ends to be put on a mysterious and ephemeral pedestal rather than a means of great impact creates woefully ill-prepared students of art, ill-informed influencers of its ability to be practiced, and does us the great disservice of removing the agency of artists within their own works. Artists are not independently operating free floating individuals who are understanding of opposing views, as she suggests. They are inherently rooted in their own biases, realized and unrealized, that can impact and influence their creative works and endeavors. They are not gods, above it all, instead they are active players and participants, with a particularly powerful set of tools at their hand. Art without people to make it and people to interpret it is worth absolutely nothing.
I just love the fact that she completely misinterprets the ending quote of Oscar Wilde's preface, which is literally preceded by "One can be excused for making a useless thing only if he admires it profusely."
The Picture Of Dorian Gray is probably one of the best books I've ever read, I can't wait to finish it but I'm also scared, because the book itself is art and so beautifully written, that it hurts.
The part where she says "Artistic imagination and creativity are not added bonuses for society, not the icing on the cake, they are integral to the human spirit and to human aspirations" reminds me of The Kybalion: "The world is mental" meaning that we are creative beings by nature.

Justin Jan i don't agree, we're all the same humans, and souls, we all understand ourselves, we're in the same dip explaining our point of view to the rest of us, so an art piece created within the true aura of the person would reach fellow beings fully. Art is a feeling described. Just as one might explain his love, hatred to us, and we understand that, we'd understand it when its in the form of material.
art is not a separating factor between humans and other animals. there are certain animals like the birds of paradise or certain fish that specifically focus on beauty in creating their homes but that is with the intention of attracting mates, and so are their mesmerizing and gorgeous dance performances and mating rituals.
Art occupies a different dimension and is the portal to it. The creativity and unexplainable concepts create the future and perhaps the past. It can be political or not (or thought to be). Support the arts.
The one thing you realize is art is how we pass down our culture and ideas from one generation to another. Remember movies and TV reflect who we were, even the trashiest of it. Some of the first artists who reflected how the common person lived were the Dutch masters. Before that art was about religion, the rich. the powerful, and the warrior. It was impersonal. My mind always goes back to our frequent visits to my ancestral home in Centane near Butterworth EC. My father’s elder brother who had never set his foot in a classroom, a practising traditional healer then, would bring pieces of wood from a nearby forest, find himself a comfortable spot under a tree and proceed to carve some items for fun. One of these would be a harp (uhadi); a long arm smoking pipe or a human face etc. There was never a question as to why he was doing it or what did it represent. It was just a God given skill that most people used to while away time if they were not in the fields working.
Why does everyone have such a tough time defining art? Art:=Artifacts of deliberate human creation, with the intent of envoking an idea and/or emotion. Good art adds displays of exceptional skill to the definition. I swear ted talks are becoming more and more windbaggery.

Art is a way for the person who creates it to reflect his or her own world. Of course, a work of art can be a mirror to the feelings and thoughts of people other than the artist, because people are not actually very complex and are similar to each other. Additionally, the artist and his work may have an impact on the dynamics of the period in which he lived. Because a newspaper article and a work of art are not very different in this respect. But art is not more than that. We try to place works of art in certain contexts and forcefully impose meanings that do not exist. 99 out of 100 people who look at two coins, one of which is called a "work of art" and the other is an ordinary means of payment, will not be able to tell the difference, and many will make the wrong interpretation. Only someone who knows the context historically and culturally can understand the difference. Those who understand this difference will call that coin a "work of art". However, anyone who reads an ordinary inscription of that period will understand the context and will not attribute any value to it other than its historical value. Note: These ideas were formed as a result of my general perspective on life, the Art History course I took and my readings about it. If you suggest a source that clearly shows the opposite of these ideas, I would be happy to examine it.
That's a lie, cause Ideals, and morals are all a part of politics, and they're also a part, probably the most important part, of an individual. So by talking politics in art and sharing your point of view of things, you're making it personal and for yourself. It's true, not all art has to make a statement or be political, but when it does have politics involved, it doesn't make it any less valuable.

A wonderful talk and one that I will be sharing with my postgraduate art and design students. However, to be a little nerdy: as far as I'm aware (I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong) when 'quite' is used with an ungradable (in this case an 'absolute') adjective ('useless'), as opposed to a gradable one ('good'), it is a synonym of 'utterly' and does not ameliorate it (a synonym of 'to some extent'), as Katrina states at the beginning of her talk.
When people ask me how I got good a drawling and if there's something they can do I would say practice and be prepared for you to hate your work and for you to never be good enough at art because you will improve so much but you will never be perfect
Art is used in politics for sure, but I'm over it- art as propaganda. Shared beauty brings people together. Shared opinion is an extension of social media, and I don't think we need more of that in society. Let art heal, not divide. Also the idea that the world is too conservative and leftists voices are needed to balance out is little hippie era fantasy. The idea that the left is unincorporated in big biz and corruption is just naive. A plurality of voices is needed for sure, but you won't find that in politics, or politically formed college art students. I think artists and the youth are as blind as the big government they bow to.

I think the title of this video is a bit misleading. She's not talking about art in general but about the impact contemporary art in society, which is a lot more specific topic IMO. Also, the talk was not even that good.

Art should be mingled with entertainment so it can be engaging. Example is the above video,she is talking important things but not in a convincing manner. Just reading,the talk could have been more engaging.
Art such as Naruto or Pokémon isn't art for a political agenda. If anything they are cultural arts. Art that was originally and to an extent is still created for the simple goal of expressing the authors self, while having the added benefit of spreading Japan's cultural stories to a wider audience. There isn't a political msg in Narutos core themes, just one of love and acceptance.

Why does everyone have such a tough time defining art?
Art:=Artifacts of deliberate human creation, with the intent of envoking an idea and/or emotion.
Good art adds displays of exceptional skill to the definition.

This is BS. Her stance being that art is mostly about making statements, is completely wrong. In fact, I’d go so far as to say, Any specific thing carrying an agenda, cannot be classified as art.

Art is a way for the person who creates it to reflect his or her own world. Of course, a work of art can be a mirror to the feelings and thoughts of people other than the artist, because people are not actually very complex and are similar to each other. Additionally, the artist and his work may have an impact on the dynamics of the period in which he lived. Because a newspaper article and a work of art are not very different in this respect. But art is not more than that. We try to place works of art in certain contexts and forcefully impose meanings that do not exist. 99 out of 100 people who look at two coins, one of which is called a "work of art" and the other is an ordinary means of payment, will not be able to tell the difference, and many will make the wrong interpretation. Only someone who knows the context historically and culturally can understand the difference. Those who understand this difference will call that coin a "work of art". However, anyone who reads an ordinary inscription of that period will understand the context and will not attribute any value to it other than its historical value.
To look at art from another perspective, let's consider the popular Mona Lisa painting. Let's take someone who is not influenced by popular culture and has no technical knowledge of painting. He will not be able to realize that the techniques used in Mona Lisa (sfumato, light and shadow, perspective, anatomy) are very advanced. According to this person, is Mona Lisa a work of art? Does it have to be? Think about it in reverse, when artificial intelligence reveals these techniques as masterfully as Da Vinci and starts producing works, will we call them works of art?
In summary, what I mean is that "art" is subjective, except for the technical part of the work. However, we mostly refer to the subjective part, not the technical part. Otherwise, the exaggerated importance of art will disappear. In the case of subjectivity, it cannot be decided whether a work is "art or not". What we do today is a completely historical and cultural classification. Therefore, art is not as important as some "authorities" say. It doesn't have to be.
Note: These ideas were formed as a result of my general perspective on life, the Art History course I took and my readings about it. If you suggest a source that clearly shows the opposite of these ideas, I would be happy to examine it.

That's a lie, cause Ideals, and morals are all a part of politics, and they're also a part, probably the most important part, of an individual. So by talking politics in art and sharing your point of view of things, you're making it personal and for yourself. It's true, not all art has to make a statement or be political, but when it does have politics involved, it doesn't make it any less valuable.

A wonderful talk and one that I will be sharing with my postgraduate art and design students. However, to be a little nerdy: as far as I'm aware (I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong) when 'quite' is used with an ungradable (in this case an 'absolute') adjective ('useless'), as opposed to a gradable one ('good'), it is a synonym of 'utterly' and does not ameliorate it (a synonym of 'to some extent'), as Katrina states at the beginning of her talk.

When people ask me how I got good a drawling and if there's something they can do I would say practice and be prepared for you to hate your work and for you to never be good enough at art because you will improve so much but you will never be perfect

Art is used in politics for sure, but I'm over it- art as propaganda. Shared beauty brings people together. Shared opinion is an extension of social media, and I don't think we need more of that in society. Let art heal, not divide. Also the idea that the world is too conservative and leftists voices are needed to balance out is little hippie era fantasy. The idea that the left is unincorporated in big biz and corruption is just naive. A plurality of voices is needed for sure, but you won't find that in politics, or politically formed college art students. I think artists and the youth are as blind as the big government they bow to.

I think the title of this video is a bit misleading. She's not talking about art in general but about the impact contemporary art in society, which is a lot more specific topic IMO. Also, the talk was not even that good.

Art should be mingled with entertainment so it can be engaging.
Example is the above video,she is talking important things but not in a convincing manner. Just reading,the talk could have been more engaging.
Art such as Naruto or Pokémon isn't art for a political agenda. If anything they are cultural arts. Art that was originally and to an extent is still created for the simple goal of expressing the authors self, while having the added benefit of spreading Japan's cultural stories to a wider audience. There isn't a political msg in Narutos core themes, just one of love and acceptance.
