When I was going through my divorce to ease my stress and depression I used to listen to lullabies at night before going to sleep. It was soothing and comforting for my vulnerable inner child. Not all of them worked but we need more lullabies for adults for sure.

Really good. Just ordered it again 🥰

Ever since I turned like 7, I've never been able to listen to any lullabies without crying. I think it's because my mom would humm and play them when I was little, and I know I could never get back to that again
I had a friend, german American who loved Latin music, salsa, because, she said, the happy beat always made her feel like dancing. Knowing that she didn't speak Spanish, I said to her that the amazing thing about salsa was not just the happy beat. It was the fact that many of the lyrics were about heartbreak and despair but because of the happy beat it makes you want to get up and get back on the dance floor and find a new partner to dance with. Music, the best gift we can give and receive. This lady is beautiful.
I grew up in the 90s, music was very special to all of us. First of all, the only way the access music was to buy the audio casette or CD. I had to save a month of lunch money to buy an album. This made us appreciate it a lot more. The best part was calling all your friends home because you had the latest album. We friends would get together create mix tapes for each other, listen together and act like we were performing in a concert! I realise the main this was the shared experience, musoc gave us something to do together. Once we grew up and we started having chance to drive a car, we friends would be singing our favorite songs at the top of our voices! Man ... Those were the best days of my life.

Her song at the end really reminded me of The Beatles in the best way. Scarlett Keys, what a name to be a pianist; literally born for the keys. She seems like a wonderful woman. I'd have loved to have her as my music teacher.
I learned from another musicologist why Linda Rondstadt's "Long Long Time" FEELS so longing and unrequited at the end. I found this fascinating. It's because it ends on the 4th chord, which leaves it unresolved. Giving us the FEELING of it (the unrequited love) being unfinished and neverending. And for RHCP fans, if I'm not mistaken "Wet Sand" also ends on the 4th.
I will say that repetition is sometimes meditative and hypnotic. Music from Africa, and from the African-American culture has lots of repetition, and it actually makes the energy intensify.
In fact, african music uses a lot of polyrhythms, adding a tension and movement to the song. So, it is repetitive, but not boring and have some groove we enjoy.

In 2013, Scarlet taught me how to write better lyrics, and I use those tools daily. Unfortunately Berklee doesn’t teach how to recover from an abusive home so I never made a living writing lyrics. Btw, Scarlet, you once interrupted a class to show only me an Adele song when I said I’d never listened to her. It was embarrassing because I didn’t enjoy it. Sorry. 😅
I haven't watched any Ted talks for a year or so. I had surgery done on the lower spin. Have been in bed since we've been home (day 3) I decided to watch something different and this title caught my vocabulary attention. When she shared her story and the power of words with music, I started to cry when she sang that song! My neighbor's made us dinner, the kids brought me flowers, painting and candies with love notes. She put it perfectly! I've got everything I need! This is staying on my playlist for reminding purposes ❤❤❤ Thank you 🙏

This is a TEDx talk, not the full-on TED, I think these function a bit differently. TEDx is run locally on a volunteer basis, TED is a paid membership conference, so I suspect in its case the fee paid to talk is basically the fee paid to attend.

She’s says never mind I’ll go and find someone who makes me happy and settles down marries me like you did ….i love the shadow meaning of this song …. No one wants the one that was no good for them or who hurts them…. How you perceive what context she is singing in that line reveals your emotional intelligence like thinking intimate relationships look like the toxic bond type or healthy partnership with boundaries and support and communication etc
OMG i love her voice, the way she speaks and expresses such calmness. She should also consider being an Audible narrator lol. This was a great TEDx talk.
How you say something is ALWAYS more important than what you say. And: the triggering of memory certainly doesn't have to be housed in a "song." It could be a quartet of French Horns playing a certain pitch in unison that evokes multitudes. It could be a band of white noise that bring back an event from 28 years ago. Etc... Thankfully all of this is still a glorious mystery.
Before watching this video I assume that it's largely nostalgia, the songs you've listened In your teens and while that's true in my case also, it's also discovering new things that really resonate with my personality, but also a certain artist which, in my opinion, transcends music and delivers something of a higher level auditory form of art, at least compared to most of the other artists. He doesn't just make songs, they're journeys and complex and intricate pieces of art. And after experiencing something like that, when you hear a song from most other artists, you're like "are you even trying?"

Bruce Springsteen's Backstreets came to mind now. I guess it doesn't necessarily count because he keeps alternating two different melodies over the same sentence... but like nineteen times. ... but mostly I feel like some of the universality of her observations immediately fell apart when she stated "three and a half minutes" as the likely length of our favourite songs. Most of my favourites are longer. One of my all time favourites clocks in at over twelve minutes. 😂 (Telegraph Road by Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler) You can fit more complexity and rule-defying into a longer song, and you can give it more time to develop. And for some of us it is precisely that that speaks to us, not just the melody itself. I like the longer, more complex songs among other reasons because getting immersed in them is a form of everyday escapism. (It occurs to me now that the way she presents it, the instrumentals are always only in service to the lyrics - whereas in a lot of songs I like, the instrumentals play an equally important role, and may even take up more time than the lyrics, and part of the joy of the song is feeling that the people playing it are enjoying playing it.)

She’s says never mind I’ll go and find someone who makes me happy and settles down marries me like you did ….i love the shadow meaning of this song …. No one wants the one that was no good for them or who hurts them…. How you perceive what context she is singing in that line reveals your emotional intelligence like thinking intimate relationships look like the toxic bond type or healthy partnership with boundaries and support and communication etc

How you say something is ALWAYS more important than what you say. And: the triggering of memory certainly doesn't have to be housed in a "song." It could be a quartet of French Horns playing a certain pitch in unison that evokes multitudes. It could be a band of white noise that bring back an event from 28 years ago. Etc... Thankfully all of this is still a glorious mystery.

Before watching this video I assume that it's largely nostalgia, the songs you've listened In your teens and while that's true in my case also, it's also discovering new things that really resonate with my personality, but also a certain artist which, in my opinion, transcends music and delivers something of a higher level auditory form of art, at least compared to most of the other artists. He doesn't just make songs, they're journeys and complex and intricate pieces of art. And after experiencing something like that, when you hear a song from most other artists, you're like "are you even trying?"

Bruce Springsteen's Backstreets came to mind now. I guess it doesn't necessarily count because he keeps alternating two different melodies over the same sentence... but like nineteen times.
... but mostly I feel like some of the universality of her observations immediately fell apart when she stated "three and a half minutes" as the likely length of our favourite songs. Most of my favourites are longer. One of my all time favourites clocks in at over twelve minutes. 😂 (Telegraph Road by Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler)
You can fit more complexity and rule-defying into a longer song, and you can give it more time to develop. And for some of us it is precisely that that speaks to us, not just the melody itself. I like the longer, more complex songs among other reasons because getting immersed in them is a form of everyday escapism.
(It occurs to me now that the way she presents it, the instrumentals are always only in service to the lyrics - whereas in a lot of songs I like, the instrumentals play an equally important role, and may even take up more time than the lyrics, and part of the joy of the song is feeling that the people playing it are enjoying playing it.)
