"All I had to do was ask the question, and all you had to do was be a decent human being, and yet most industries still aren't autism accessible and autism friendly, and there is no reason for that other then people don't want to make minute small changes that don't effect anything." --Chloé Hayden

Allot of autistic people also have anxiety which prevents them from being able to ask the question.

Earlier I had a 1.5hr long therapy session all about how frustrated I am with not being able to live out my dreams, I’m chronically ill and autistic and just want so much more from life. I want a job, friends, a pet, to learn how to drive… it’s so hard to stay optimistic, but this really helps 💜 Thank you for the hope

You can only do the best you can within your limitations. (Now for me to take my own advice somehow…lol. I have EDS, GAD, ADHD, am an undiagnosed autistic, among other things). Hang in there and always live your life by being kind to others, you’ll make a difference. ❤

I finished Heartbreak High today and you did amazing! As someone who is also autistic I kept saying things like “That’s so me” or “That’s so relatable” even “Why does this sound familiar” you are proof that Autistic people can make it in the film industry. I myself am a aspiring actor and it gives me hope that I have a chance in the big leagues

    Dear Chloé
Your video made me cry. I am a 37 years old french autistic woman who got diagnosed less than a year ago. You told the industry what your needs are and it paid off. I did that why in my master's class and at my job and it worked. My difference is respected there, because it's a part of me. It's possible guys keep fighting you can get the job that's made for you.

I was diagnosed when I was 12 (I'm 19 now) and at first I didn't want to be defined by my autism at all. I hated my symptoms. I wanted to hide it. After watching Chloe's videos I realized my autism is something to be celebrated, such as how it gave me a crazily visual imagination and gave me a special interest that led to starting a business that raises money for charity. A lot of it sucks, that's true, but to me, I'd rather be autistic than neurotypical any day because of the unique strengths it gave me.
Don't be afraid to be autistic. Express it. Talk about it. This is how we normalize it so kids like us in the future don't have to feel ashamed. I dream of a future where a doctor says to a parent, "Congratulations! Your kid is autistic! They will live a happy, vibrant life where all their needs are met and they are celebrated for who they are!"

It's so lovely to hear about the staff putting so much care and thought into making the job accessible! I think it's also kind of bittersweet, because there's no reason we can't do that everywhere. Who would have thought the key to helping people be their best was just listening to them?😆
    Nice to meet you, Quinni!🤗🌸🍀

I wanted to say thank you! Your videos were one of the things that got me on my journey and helped me start investigating my symptoms with my psychologist. I got an official diagnosis this month! I'm autistic. 30 years to figure it out, but here we are! Thank you for everything you do!

That's so wonderful to hear, how accommodating and accessible the set was. Progress does happen! 😊I hope it accelerates!
Okay so my dream isn't acting, but I'm taking that advice about not letting anybody tell you you can't do it. I needed it.❤ In my last session, my psychologist implied I'm doomed to fail in my chosen career that I'm going back to school for. I told her about a rare 3 day partial shutdown, and how I got through it, even going to work, where even more stress piled on, without it turning into a meltdown or a full shutdown by using all the good autistic tools, like stimming, rest, sensory breaks, sensory good, using AAC, and time on interests. For me, this was a nice victory of how well I've been caring for my brain. She wildly misinterpreted the point as usual and now thinks I *won't* be able to cope because *different* (autistic) tools are effective for me than the skills she wanted to push, that she said would allow me to just tolerate sensory distress during a shutdown indefinitely. I've been down that road before; for me, that way lies disassociation. I obviously prefer Chloé's advice!!

I know you wrote this awhile ago, but I just found this video, and wanted to say I support you!!! You’ve obviously worked hard to recognize and develop skills to help yourself stay as balanced as possible. I hope you have people who support your accomplishments, and that either your therapist learns more or that you find a better-informed therapist. I’m late-diagnosed autistic, and was fortunate to find a psychiatrist who is not only an expert on ASD, but is autistic herself. In our therapy sessions, she helps me to recognize when I’m pushing myself too hard, which is critical, but is also very supportive of my using my own strategies to live a more balanced and productive life.
I hope things are going well for you, even if there have been some bumps along the way.✨

That's definitely also my take on Autistic acting! Plus, we get to break social norms without shame or guilt. And, if we're hyper empathetic, we can just straight up feel the emotions without really having to act😂

  • @georgia6947
    @georgia6947 2 года назад +4

I’m Autistic and one of my aspirations is to be an actor. I want to play characters that people can relate to, because that’s what I’ve always needed. I’m 15 and I latch on to any character I can relate to in the slightest way, including those I wish I didn’t relate to (i.e. villains). I used to live to perform. It was my whole life. But then developed all these other disorders I have now. I’ll get back there one day! Look out for me on the big screen :)
I feel like, if accommodated to properly, Autistics could dominate the acting industry. We spend our whole life changing our mannerisms by copying other people (masking). We are incredibly empathetic and creative, able to imagine ourselves as someone completely different. We have special interests and hyper fixations, and we would want to research and practice and ponder and work out every single crevice of our character.

I wanted to say a huge deep felt thank you for breaking into an industry that needs us! My son is 13 and has been begging me to watch it. Yesterday we sat for six hours as our best autistic selves. My son had told me that I reminded him a bit of your character which I found interesting, and I cant tell you how seen I personally felt as a 31 year old woman. I had a terrible high school experience, but the magic and beauty and love that I had for this world, I saw it all over your soul and I cant wait for next weekend because my son and I are coming to your book signing! I had said to him 'lets go be our best autistic selves' and you are a reason why I've been able to get to this place very slowly.
I hope to reach my dreams like you have, I wish I hadnt waited so long, but its so inspiring to know, we just need to try. I hate failing but I promised my son to finally create art again, and wow its damn beautiful.
Thank you again and I hope we get to say hi to you :)

1: I finished the show today and I absolutely love it, and you in it. You did an amazing job and I wish I’d had this show when I was a teenager and didn’t know much about neurodivergence, gender, or ultimately myself. it made me cry a lot, in a good way. even if it had existed, my mom probably wouldn’t have let me watch it, but it’s still really great seeing it now.
2: this is the second of your videos I’ve seen, and in both you make fun of yourself for almost crying, and I just wanna say, it’s okay to cry when you need to. You’re an amazing human being, even in any and all of the emotions you feel. So ultimately,
3: thank you, for your performance, and for existing.❤️

Hi Chloe, I only just found out about Heartbreak High and your wonderful character Quinni. I was diagnosed with Autism earlier this year and it is SOOOO great to finally have positive representation of female autism that defies previous TV and Media stereotypes.
I am an aspiring actress myself and I can't begin to express how happy I am that you, being open and positive (and other wonderful adjectives!) are out there paving a way for other autistic actors and actresses to follow behind. Seeing you achieve greatness makes me feel like I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

I love this! I'm an autistic filmmaker and I got a grant to make a proof of concept for a web-series starring an autistic character. It was our goal to make a neurodivergent friendly set because it wasn't just me, but we hired a lot of neurodivergent crew. We asked people individually about their needs but also had general rules about accessibility. It was a super positive and fun set and I hadn't heard of other people doing that but hearing your experience is giving me hope to keep pushing this. This industry has been so hard for me and I'm hoping we can make a future with more neurodiverse stories!! Thank you!

I love your acting and character in HH. Quinni very much feels like a real person who I could run into somewhere. I am very moved by the relationship between Quinni and Darren. It seems as though they have been friends a long time and have a language between them that is a short hand. Darren seems to help Quinni in a way that is devoid of condescention. He is not patronizing or savior-ing. And Quinni retains full agency even when she is being supported by her friend. Can you share your ideas about these two characters and their relationship? Thank you! I can't wait to see season 2.

The moment in the series that made me tear up was when Quinni wanted her friends to take off the fake lashes because from the outside it might seem like such small, insignificant scene but to me it felt incredibly validating. Quinni's behaviour and mannerisms weren't over the top or exaggerated to fit a stereotype but were instead really relatable for me. As an autistic person who was diagnosed later in life it's sometimes very painful when people tell me that I don't look or seem that autistic and I bet a lot of people would probably say this about Quinni as well. But her character is the best representation I have ever seen! She's funny and compassionate and feels so deeply and I feel so happy that a character like her exists 💖 You did such a good job with this role, Chloe!

I legit screamed when I saw you on tv. I haven’t watched your channel in ages and when you came up on my screen I was so exited. I LOVED the way Quinni was represented, especially the way it showed so many micro aggressions and why they were wrong without specifically saying it.
My brothers are autistic and I wish that they had realistic characters on tv while we were growing up. The depictions were always such extreme examples. One of my brothers was diagnosed as an adult and one as a child. The one that was diagnosed as a child was constantly asked what his special skill was. He had interests that he was super knowledgeable about, still does, but he doesn’t have a special “gift”. People then didn’t really believe him or dismissed him as an autistic person as he wasn’t the idea they had of an autistic person.

I realized after searching on Netflix that there was an older series on there too from 1999 with the same name. I was wondering why your name wasn’t listed in the cast until I noticed the 2022 series lol. This comment is so others don’t make the same mistake. There are 2 series of the same name on Netflix. Anyhow, congrats Chloe. 🎉

I felt so represented by Quinni and I'm at least 10 years older than the character 😅 Also, I would love to know where you got the cardigan you're wearing? It looks amazing x

Hi Chloe i was just wondering, how does one go about asking for accommodations when they aren’t officially diagnosed? Or even if they are neurotypical?

Can you please do a video on Anime, Manga, Visual Novels, Light Novels, Studio Ghibli, Toonami? Americans, Canadians, Chinese, French, Irish, Scottish, English, Welsh, Japanese love that kind of stuff , but I do keep hearing over and over that it is “more popular among autistics” That’s not a thing here in the Northern Hemisphere.

After the Netflix release (will it release worldwide at the same time?) it would be great if you could post a video about representation from an insider's view, maybe even interviewing scriptwriters and other people you worked with.
