    I had no idea that apparently less than ONE PERCENT of people that responded to a survey liked the story of super paper mario?? It's so good though. 😭

      Those polls were kind of terrible. Still, I do think that Super’s story would be better for something other than a Mario game. It’d be perfectly fitting for something like Kirby, Earthbound, or even a new IP. As is, the Mario characters are just kind of along for the ride.

      As a newcomer to the franchise, I’m still in disbelief that 1% said they liked the story. It’s almost as if the poll they presented was kinda sketchy

      It was a club nintendo poll. Literally almost everybody just spammed through them for free coins

    • @fawfulthegreat64
      @fawfulthegreat64 Год назад +15

      Those polls, from everything I've heard, would ask you which aspect of the game you enjoyed and then only let you choose one option. Combine that with how most people were mindlessly speedrunning the surveys for points, how many of them were clueless parents whose children were the ones playing the game, and how Super Paper Mario's box cover strongly emphasizes the 2D/3D mechanic and not the story, these results were rigged from the start. They immediately followed up the "less than 1%" comment with "a lot of people liked the 2D/3D mechanic" which lines up with this.

    The reason why Super Paper Mario is so different is because it was intended to be a GameCube game, and they didn’t want two similar games on the same system.
    Still, I think the game is more similar to an action RPG than a platformer. The main purpose of the game is to attack enemies to level up and increase your stats, not complete platforming challenges. The platforming in this game is nothing more than a way of traveling from one area to another.

    There are two main differences between "true" Paper Mario and "imposter" Paper Mario:
    1. Thematic story (unique designs are a part of this). Origami King was a step in the right direction here, don't get me wrong, but it still falls woefully short of what's needed.
    2. Difficulty. Paper Mario was kid-friendly sure, but never brain-dead... until Sticker Star. And again, Origami King was a step in the right direction, but still short of expectations.
    Super Paper Mario, while not being an RPG, has both of these factors, and thus is why I consider it to belong next to TTYD and its predecessor, while the others assuredly do NOT.
    The absolute _best_ Paper Mario wasn't actually a "Paper" or a "Mario" though. While not directly mentioned in this video, the title card used for "Combat" comes from Bug Fables, and it did _everything_ that TTYD did and did it _better..._ and that's coming from a guy who adores PM and knows TTYD will be better (picked it up but haven't actually played it yet).

    • @avocadeous
      @avocadeous Год назад +2

      I liked origami king too. I’ve always respected the older games for what they did, but I never really liked playing them. Though, that may be because I was introduced to the series through Sticker Star, so to me PM was never an RPG series. Anyways, when I played Origami King, it just felt nice to play; I really enjoyed my time with it. The battles were pretty nice, the environments were beautifully crafted and the characters, at least to me, were pretty great. I mean, the fact that they made a box of pencils a grouchy old art critic named “Jean-Pierre coloured pencils the 12th” will never not be funny to me. Plus Bobby was such a great dude and, judging by your PFP, I don’t need to elaborate on that. I get that the game may not be for everyone, but TOK is definitely my favourite game in the series right now.

    im guessing you hate sticker star and color splash?
    edit: you acually liked them! finally someone who gives them a chance.
    i do have a handfull of notes fou you, you dont have to take them seriously, but i just want to give my thoughts on this vid that you made for the world to see. thank you for contributing your art to this world.
    1: bowser kidnaps peach.
    thats it? no. its the end goal of bowsers princess nappings but theres a lot of stuff that makes them higher stakes. PM64 has bowser become a invincible being able to take on mario and always come out on top, Color splash has bowser get corrupted by the black paint, causing him to go full villan and suck the island dry of color like he did with the princess, NSMBU has bowser not only kidnap peach but her entire castle as well, making team mario rush over to the castle while bowser makes his influence known. SS is a bit of a combo of both CS and 64 where he and a few other mushroom kingdom residents become power hungry. its always more to it in those examples.
    2: boring tutorials.
    cant a game pace itself to let the player get introduced to the world and gameplay? i know it can be better but calling them a slog is kinda harsh. have some patience to them, and dont rush.
    3: you dont like battles.
    i know a lot of people get really antsy when they think of slow RPG combat that comes to mind when the term RPG is spoken about and i get it. (i also thing its a very bad trope thats unfair to the games that make it fun) now i acually like RPG combat (you just gotta look in the right place like any rpg that atlus makes) and i have played the combat of 64, SS, and OG, and i really liked them. theyre good combat systems, but you couldnt enjoy them caue you dont like rpg battles as you state a few times in this video.
    4: paper cuts
    now i didnt find any paper joke to be overbearing and repeating, i was more concerned by the toads that couldnt restore thier creases. and i dont agree with the fact that the paper concept is creativley limiting cause it allows the level designers to create (in my poinion) beautuful lefels that feel and look really handcrafted by a paper master. the best of wich was king ollys castle, i thought that place was amazing visualy.
    5: 2 hour playtime
    i feel like you should give the games a lot of your playtime to really appreciate them. a lot of great stuff happens after the 4 hour mark in most of those games.
    now if only there was a video talking about all of theese game where the person who played them acually likes rpg mechanics and can give sticker tar a chance and wasnt in a rush and could play theese games to the end.
    also you have some strange opinions. i do too.

    • @Cheesehead302
      @Cheesehead302 Год назад

      The 2 hour play time thing was a sticking point (see what I did there) for me with this video, I'm really not hating I swear. But at a point I was listening to some of the discussion and thinking... how is this something you can present as a complete thought? I think this would have worked better had it been presented like a first reaction to the early parts type of thing. Story and mechanics in particular are things that kinda need to be experienced in their long form selves. Also, in my opinion, Sticker Star is something that you play for an hour or so and it's not that bad, seems good at first. And after sticking with it, that's when it becomes truly terrible lol.

    Also they are skippable in some games like swsh 6:54

  • @DarkFoxKit
    @DarkFoxKit Год назад +2

    I don't think analyzing the games after only playing it for a few hours really shows you why fans love or hate the game. Especially since most of your complaints boil down to long tutorials and the battle system. You're not supposed to play these games back-to-back after only a few hours of gameplay after all. RPGs usually start to pick up after the first few hours for it to get interesting because that's when the set up is finished and the plot really gets rolling.
    Sticker Star was the only 'modern' Paper Mario I've played, but never finished. Like you said, it wasn't as terrible a game as people say it is, but the fact that Paper Mario never really recovered since that happened, it's become a big contention for fans. I hated the game not for the game itself, but for what it represented and what it had done to the series since then. I couldn't bring myself to buy Color Splash or Oragami King. So I never played those games, nor do I plan to. And that's probably how most fans of the old Paper Mario games feel about the new ones.
    But to end it on a good note, with the remake of TTYD and Super Mario RPG coming out, there's finally a light at the end of this long dark tunnel.
