Whenever story in video games is brought up, I will always bring up Super Paper Mario's story, and the cinematic presentation of Super Mario Galaxy as an example of why simple games can have deep stories.
O'Chunks, Mimi, and Nastasia do get a bit more development if you talk with Carson the bartender at The Overthere coffee shop in Flopside, as he (and his Flipside counterpart Garson) have a bunch of stories that flesh out the backstories of both the villains and the overall setting with the Tribe of Ancients and the Pixels.
There was a cool theory about Nastasia reading the Dark Prognosticus, which informed her that Dimentio would try to end Count Bleck. However, in turning the book's pages, she became the new owner of the Dark Prognosticus and bearer of its misfortune. Hence, she could confidently state that Count Bleck (freed from the Dark Prognosticus) and Tippi had a happy ending.
Yeah, it's even stated that the Dark Prognosticus is the true prophecy and that all the Light Prognosticus' prophecy can do is to keep delaying that prophecy as long as possible, even though most believe and follow the Light, not knowing it's not the true prophecy.

Amazing Video. I really felt all the wonderful memories of a younger me playing the game for the first time rushing back as the video continued. Keep up the good work my friend! 🙌
I've always thought of Count Bleck as the personification of grief. Without explaining too much, he sporadically goes between denial, depression, anger, and bargaining. That is until the end of the game when he finally reaches acceptance. It is worth mentioning that the stages are not always in the same order that we think of them in. As such, he does not necessarily go through those phases in a particular order.
Literally played this nonstop when I was a kid. I can't believe it's not talked about more because I played through it at least 5 times without ever getting bored. I remember starting a new game over and over again just to replay Mimi's Mansion and run away from her creepy spider transformation lol
I think the game's better for being a platformer than it would've been as another RPG. It has some paper and RPG elements, so it's not just a platformer like other 2D Mario games, but it's also not exactly the same as the other Paper Mario games either because it doesn't lock you into turn-based combat. I think it winds up being more unique gameplaywise as a result and that's a very good thing. The games that came after it didn't live up to the rest of the series, and they have their own gameplay-focused changes, so a lot of people tend to put the dividing line on the wrong side of this game for where things started to go wrong, but that's often assumptions from people who haven't really even played it. At some point after this game, before the next, Nintendo stopped allowing the creation of new characters in the series, and you really can't make an RPG well like that, as RPGs focus hard on story stuff. If that had been applied to this game, Bowser in the party would've been a Toad named Toad instead, Count Bleck would be replaced with Bowser, all the NPCs would be named Toad (& shaped accordingly)... The game would've lost everything it is with very little gameplay changes.
I feel it would've been better by dropping more of the RPG elements (HP, Attack Power, experience points/leveling up, inventory of consumables) and making the platformer controls less slippery _or_ by deepening the RPG elements a little. For me it sits in exactly the wrong zone as both an avid platformer fan and an avid RPG fan. Actually, "make the platformer controls less slippery" would fix most of its combat and navigation issues, leaving only its terrible level design.
This was actually my first paper Mario game in the series! My second was when I learned what the whole series was in retrospect and it was… color splash (oh no). Then I played TTYD. This game gave me such a mind opening experience as a kid with Mario’s stories. Never mind that he’s just running through spaces attempting to stop a world eating void and canonically climbs out of hell to low dif Satan, this game made me (as a kid) stop skipping in game cutscenes because of how invested I was getting. Side note: I can’t imagine what people who played TTYD thought playing through chapter 6, thinking they’d get another glitz vile, but OOOOH NO
The only real problem I have is the linearity of the worlds. You've got all these big exploration focused subchapters, but at the end of each you just get a one way teleport to the next section and it makes the world feel disjointed. If they ever remake this gem id really like it if they went full metroidvania on each of the worlds (cept for world 6 of course)
I played this game about 3 or 4 years ago and i really loved it. This was the last game on my Wii that i played before the 1 and 2 buttons of my wiimote stopped working, the story, the characters and the gameplay were amazing to me. I'm glad there are people who also apreciate this game, it was different from the previous games, sure, but different in a well executed way (unlike the next 2 paper mario games).
This game is definitely a masterpiece but I wouldn’t call it underrated. It was a decade ago but now a days it feels like it gets the recognition it deserves.
There's definitely a sizeable portion of people who act like its cons are way worse than they are and downplay how great its pros are. They tend to be the same people who downplay the issues with modern Paper Mario (especially TOK) and/or condemn the backtracking in TTYD as some major flaw that brings it down. To them, SPM isn't notable for its story and world and lore and characters, it's notable for having an obnoxious block puzzle and gags that waste the player's time, a greater sin than anything committed in later Paper Mario games, and it having a better story HARDLY makes up for that. Heck in some cases they also call the story a bad fanfiction and "at least newer games know they're Mario games" It's those people that make me still consider it underrated. I see those takes pop up a lot on Twitter and Reddit and I've even been downvoted for making cases against them before. Classic Paper Mario as a whole isn't as unanimously loved as it once was, but SPM has definitely taken the biggest hit. I'd say the peak of its popularity was during Sticker Star and Color Splash's era, but even then there was a sizable group that lumped it in with the modern PM games, back when the modern PM games were a category everybody hated. TOK has definitely had the effect of softening the reputation of modern Paper Mario and directing more scrutiny to how good the classic games really were, with SPM having the most flaws to pick apart so it got hit the hardest with that.
@@fawfulthegreat64 Honestly that’s really interesting. I don’t use Twitter and I barely go on Reddit so I guess I don’t really see those takes as much. It’s disappointing that people downvote you for having a different opinion but both those sites are more so built for echo chambers rather than nuanced conversations so that’s not surprising. The main consensus I see from RUclips videos and RUclips comments is that super paper Mario is an underrated gem that no one talks about. I did notice how TOK caused the reputation of the original paper Mario games and its fans to plummet but I didn’t know it had that much of an effect on SPM.

I'm currently more than halfway through the ttyd switch port and man, I never knew a LOT of stuff was carried over to Super. The partner abilities and the curses are tied to the Pixels just like the ultra jump is tied to Luigi. Obviously the npc's are back and Merlon has the role of Professor Frankly (but Merlon occasionally leaves his house), a few items return like the Shooting Star and Art Attack being used with the ghost Shroom, Of course Stylish moves are back and playing with Bowser is enjoyable because it feels the same as playing an actual Bowser stage. What I love the most is finding what was carried over in what way, shape or form. I also just noticed the photos in the background of the opening cutscene Mario has both sets of partners from 64 and TTYD.
While TTYD is my first introduction to Paper Mario, SPM means more to me because of its story. Nowadays I think the gameplay of TTYD is better, but my heart just belongs to SPM as my favorite Paper Mario game because it was the first game where little kid me actually read the text than skipping over every dialog.
I remember as a kid I got confused by the after game section where Francis makes Tipton I thought that he turned timpani into a robot but I think it was just a creation made to look like tipi
Same here. To be fair, I don't really get why people try to bring down this game. It is mostly always one of two things, the gameplay or the story. Some people say that the gameplay is not good but I disagree. There is people that don't say it because this game isn't turn-based, but because they just don't like how this thing plays but I don't get that. This as is, as a platformer RPG, is really fun. The thing that people most often hails about this game is the story and some people say that it is the only good thing while the gameplay is bad, but the gameplay is as good. If this thing didn't have the story that it has I would still like playing it. And even then, there is people who try to bring down the story. Mostly because this just isn't a Mario story, it is an original story with its original characters and Mario just taped on it for marketing or something. But you know, I think that that is right, and if it is I just don't care. It is neat having something this varied in a Mario game. I think that the same thing can be said to an extent about the story of TTYD, it's lore is about a place not aligned with the normal Mario places, and people don't complain. It is just that this game goes farther but that is ok. Of course, there is also people that try to bring this thing down by saying that it started the thing about the Paper Mario series changing for the worse, but that is not true. This game was meant to be a spin-off game, that is why it changes up the formula. Sticker Star was meant to go back to the normal formula, but then things happened on _that_ game's development, unrelated to Super. People should instead recognize how this game tries to merge RPG and platformers, because at the end of the day it IS an RPG with its levelling up mechanic, which some people cannot see for some reason, and I don't know if other game has tried to do that yet.
I was a ttyd super fan, but when this game came out I wanted it so bad and played it so much, I got to the rupee farming segment on the first night I think. It’s fun as fuck man. The gameplay change didn’t deter me because I could tell it was fun. now sticker star…. I knew.
@@StyleSnivy Luigi's crouch is the charge up for his super jump, Peach's is her parasol shield, Bowser's is that he leans forward while breathing fire. So it's less "only Mario can crouch" and more "everyone else's crouch has an additional effect"
@@RoninCatholic Mario slides a bit farther if you use it after running, which only useful in maybe 2 places in the whole game, and it's not required either
I’m torn on Super Paper Mario. It’s not really a bad game, but I wanted an RPG. I can definitely see some remnants of classic Paper Mario writing and world building. I love Count Bleck and Dimentio. I’m generally not a fan of the game’s art style. I think it looks too simple and ugly. The gameplay I don’t mind so much simply because Sticker Star, Color Splash and Origami King’s instead waste your time.
This is a good video but did you go out of your way to get almost every single characters name wrong on purpose 😅 really love SPM and still coping for a new game in that style some day

@@AkameGaKillfan777 The controls are not as smooth and responsive as you'd expect from a Mario platformer and having to execute them with a sideways Wii remote isn't helping any. Again, it's a game with above average writing and a lot of things botched at a mechanical level.
My assessment is that this game is the most mixed bag of the Paper Mario games. The first Paper Mario is a lot safer and a lot more consistent, Thousand Year Door is a lot more refined, this game has a few high points and boy are its low points ever low...a few fun characters but boy howdy do I ever hate its not fun characters, a few good gameplay ideas but boy oh boy are a lot of its levels completely unpleasant to navigate or play through. Sticker Star is a negative value game where there's only enough good things in it to get angry at it, the opposite of Super Paper Mario being a good game at its core but bogged down by bad decisions Sticker Star is a terrible game from the bottom up with the devs occasionally having a good idea that shines through in spite of their limitations. Color Splash is just Sticker Star again with slightly less of the bad. Origami King is its own new unique flavor of bland. Paper Jam kills two Mario RPG franchises at once and undermines the presumed conceits of both.

Remake

It's very nice to hear somebody say nice things about this game, as I've always enjoyed it. Subscribing to push you closer to that 1k milestone.
Thanks bro!
Amazing video, man.
I love Crunch
SPM IS STILL MY ALL-TIME NO.1 GAME (also it's Dimentio and not Dimension, and u also said Crunch instead of O' Chunks 💀)
I love SPM, very good video, you are very underrated
captain crunch was in fact my favorite character from this game

Lore of Why Super Paper Mario is an Underrated Masterpiece momentum 100
This game is probably the Mario game most similar to a Sonic game. They are both platformers and have more Complacated stories.
Mario Frontiers
I was a ttyd super fan, but when this game came out I wanted it so bad and played it so much, I got to the rupee farming segment on the first night I think. It’s fun as fuck man. The gameplay change didn’t deter me because I could tell it was fun. now sticker star…. I knew.
SUPER PAPER MARIO NATION RISE UP!!!!!!
RARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
*insert smbz mecha sonic transformation here*
I love this game. thank you so much.
5:36 wrong. Mario has 2 unique abilities, to turn into 3d, and to crouch. Yeah no other character can crouch but mario for some reason
Wait seriously??? I’ve played the whole game is this for real?
@@StyleSnivy i think theres maybe one time where you need to crouch
@@StyleSnivy Luigi's crouch is the charge up for his super jump, Peach's is her parasol shield, Bowser's is that he leans forward while breathing fire. So it's less "only Mario can crouch" and more "everyone else's crouch has an additional effect"
@@RoninCatholic Mario slides a bit farther if you use it after running, which only useful in maybe 2 places in the whole game, and it's not required either
Mr. L IS LUIGI?!?!?!?
WAIT REALLY? NO WAY?!
no theyre very different
Cap
They are completely different
People thinking Mr. L is Luigi are kind of people to think Crossbones is Sans
@@LegoWhisbecauseyes isn't it kinda the same thing
don't hate on the mispronunciations 😆, it's a great video
One of the best games no cap
23:08 "It's not important"
Definitely not. XD
wow! so many people making videos about my very first game!

"Underrated" If there's a million people saying it's underrated, I don't think it is.
But other than that good vid bud.
This is a good video but did you go out of your way to get almost every single characters name wrong on purpose 😅 really love SPM and still coping for a new game in that style some day
Someone that agrees with me
It's actually pronounced dimentio I think. 😅
Idk if this is correct but I hate how your saying demento or however you spell that cus I thought it was pronounced de-ment-e-o
You're right. I just mis-pronounced it
Dementio, master of dimensions', name is probably pronounced similar to his epithet, as in de-men-tcho or de-men-sho not de-men-tee-oh
The story is great, charcaters r written amazingly just not a fan of the actualy gameplay or art style of the worlds and levels sadly
15:28 "Eventually a double crosser minion named 'Dimention' (which I'll get into in a bit here) uses HER abilities to kill Luigi"
what is even going on
Nice comment farming I suppose, kinda takes me out of the analysis though
transfem dimention 🥺
I love SPM but underrated is arguably the last word I would use to describe it. Anyone who hates it just seems to hate it because it’s “cool” to do so
Or says the above average writing doesn't make up for excruciatingly bad level design and clumsy controls.
@@RoninCatholic "Clumsy" isn't the word I'd use to describe them
@@AkameGaKillfan777 The controls are not as smooth and responsive as you'd expect from a Mario platformer and having to execute them with a sideways Wii remote isn't helping any.
Game is not underrated at all
The gameplay is mid. Not bad, just mid. But the STORY is GOATED.
You remember what that black guy with lightning advised you? I think it's a good time to listen to him
@@LegoWhisbecauseyes perhaps you should instead, I'm right.
you're smoking crack if you still think this game is underrated
It might not be underrated with Paper Mario fans, but it is underrated in general.
You're the type of people to call Pizza Tower bad
@@LegoWhisbecauseyes Nah man Pizza Tower is awesome. Don't know what that has to do with what I said anyway
Masterpiece? I get it's probably for views, but that's a bit of a stretch. It's a pretty great game, but idk about masterpiece. I'll change my mind if you can convince me
its a masterpiece
You checked out the story? Idc about Count Bleck and Tippi's story but Dimentio...
@@LegoWhisbecauseyes it's a fun story for sure, but that's gonna carry a blossoming franchise that I loved
Yeah no it's a masterpiece
This game isn’t underrated
Yes it is. Especially now ever since they started remaking games.
@@kumaranrvn5716 Ok well it’s not that underrated.
Omg, this needs more attention omg 🫢
