And here’s a handful of Dark Aspects that didn’t make the cut:
    1. In the N64 game, there’s “Toad Town Underground News'” that can be found scribbled on the back of the Toad Town notice board--it’s updated with every chapter that passes! One anonymous Toad writes: “Did you hear the gossip about Princess Peach? I can't write it down here because it's unbelievable!♥♥♥”. There’s also this message later: “We'll send you beautiful photos of Princess Peach. To inquire about this special offer, please send a letter to the following address:
    Toad Town Post Office
    P.O. Box 7144
    Secret Toad
We will accept no complaints or returned goods."
    2. In the Japanese version of the original, there’s this Chuck Quizmo question: "What best describes the relationship between Mario and Luigi? 1) Lovers 2) Friends 3) Brothers". In the English version, "Lovers" was changed to "Neighbors" for obvious reasons
    3. “Cherbils” in the game are creatures who are literally shaped like butts. Because of this, O’Chunks mentions his wanting to spank Mario & gang like “naughty little Cherbils”. When describing where they shoot harmful gas, Tippi even gets flustered! More seriously, The Super Mario Wiki brings up a theory that they may be a nod to the city of Chernobyl, Ukraine- victim of a 1980’s nuclear disaster that caused poison clouds to loom over its skies for months
    4. When the Cragnons are brainwashed the player can defeat them like any other enemy. Doing so will result in a haunting moan and a reduction of points that allow you to level up
    5. In the Super Paper Mario arc of the Super Mario-kun manga, Mr. L takes a Pure Heart and rubs it on his bare booty to taunt Mario 😆 this scene was even translated into English for the Super Mario Manga Mania collection! See it as part of my review of the book here: ruclips.net/video/hLNvl0f5v14/видео.html

How about the fact the Underwhere and Overwhere's rulers are implied to be divorced exes and their daughter has to sacrifice her life to become the heart. There is a difference between a slur and an insult. In this case, brown-noser/brown-nosing/etc is being used as an insult, which is its default use. *Kind of like calling someone a "Teacher's Pet" in school. Just adults don't normally bully the person over it.* It became a common saying outside of the military at one point, used a lot in offices and other workplaces, to express frustration over someone you perceive as sucking up to the boss too much. Another term would be "[person/company]'s Lap Dog".
Not particularly hateful and not aimed at a race, orientation, or religion, or lifestyle; so not a slur. Just a swear (if that) about a person's actions when they try to be overbearingly annoying in their quest to please the bossman/woman/whoever is in power where you are at.

Something I love (and find funny) about Super Paper Mario is that Luigi is literally the deciding factor of whether good or evil wins.
Dementio even says that the Dark Prognosticus says that Luigi is the ideal host for the power of the Chaos Heart. Dementio also says the line, "How could I have lost with the power of Luigi and the Chaos Heart?" (The power of Luigi.) And I'm pretty sure Merlon says something about "the man in green" being the thing that will help decide whether the Light or Dark Prognosticus comes true.
Talk about finally realizing the importance of Luigi since he could've been the actual downfall of every dimension.

Can we talk about how Ghost T died? A poison mushroom accidentally got added to his plate of food in the dining car and it killed him. Sounds a lot like finding out a new food allergy and the ending being bad. Or in another little bit of fridge horror imagine the same thing happening in real life. I don't know how the supermarkets get their mushrooms, but in the US this is actually a big problem! The death cap mushroom is invasive in the forests of California; in their native home in Asia everyone knows not to eat them, but here in the US they just happen to look nearly indistinguishable from a common species of edible mushroom.

You missed the dysfunctional rich family with the toad author in the west side in TTYD. Why dysfunctional? The wife of the toad author is addicted to gambling and neglects feeding her kid to go gamble at the parlor all day. The depressed Toad author also seemingly ignores or neglects his kid in order to write a book. Goombella even mentions the mother in the parlor spending too much time in the parlor instead of her kid lol. So in this one family we have Gambling addiction, child neglect/abuse, depression from the author and loneliness coming from the kid. Thousand year door was great but wild.

  • @MelodyRose96

18:32 Luigi's adventure might actually be a reference to a Japanese legend, the story of Susano'o and Orochi. (It's also one of the beginning story arcs of the video game Okami.) Sasano'o is the brother to the goddess Amaterasu, however he got banished for reasons I won't get into in this comment, you just need to know he was traversing through the mortal realm for awhile. So our protagonist Susano'o came across this family, who are forced to sacrifice one of their daughters to Yamata no Orochi. Orochi is an 8 headed serpent, similar to the two headed snake Luigi fought on his adventure. Susano'o takes pity on the family and decides to kill Orochi. Susano'o disguises the daughter as a comb and hides her in his hair. Some say he cross dressed, others say he just waltzed right up to Orochi, either way, he made the serpent get absolutely smashed on alcohol and killed it. He also got a sword out of the serpent's tail, which he gave to Amaterasu as an apology gift, unbanishing him. Susano'o might not have made Orochi kill itself Ouroboros style like Luigi did, but there is a clear inspiration from the old tale.

One other not mentioned in Paper Mario 64 is Rosie the Rose and her calloused attitude about Lily dying due to lack of water. She flat out says her wanting to be beautiful is more important than Lily’s life and eventually only agrees to give up the Water stone if you bring her something more beautiful and even then prefaces it with her only agreeing because she needs flowers like Lily alive to admire her beauty.

The character Eve, who is the mother from Twilight town, will talk about her lost love with Podley, who met her when they were apparently both stage performers, before marrying her and then leaving her and the three kids. If you come by and ask Podley about her, he will pretend that he never knew her.
She also says in a later EMail that she "can't completely remember the hard times," which to me suggests that she may have used substance to cope with her emotions, especially considering her past in performance and her collapsing relationship. That's just speculation on my end though!

I wanted to comment on a few things about this video here:
9:24 - I’m not sure why I pronounced that “robo-gang” as if they’re robots lol, their names are clearly a play on robbers
33:33 - The 12th Pixl shown here with the spear & shield isn’t actually a real Pixl design--it was a photoshop creation by me. I did this because only 11 of the 12 original Pixls can actually join Mario (they are implied to be the same ones from the legend), so the 12th is likely the one who died fighting the Pixl Queen, as Carson mentions. We aren’t given any hints as to what this lost Pixl looked like, but there is an unused ladder-like Pixl found in an early version of the title screen (and, you know…Breadward. The Pixl mentioned by Mimi supposedly made out of oats and lard)!
50:55 - I didn’t know this at the time, but 108 is considered a holy number in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. This means that all of these numbers have purpose, as 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything 😆
54:45 - The Floro King does revive later on if the player revisits the palace after they beat the game--though at the point in the story, Mario was made to dispatch a leader under the influence of who’s actually at fault.

I was 6 years old when I first started playing Super Paper Mario. I had no idea about the lore, often skipping most stuff to get to the gameplay. However, this bastard called Mimi was the reason why it took me 8 years to get the game from start to finish, I was so scared of her until I grew up to endure the nightmare fuel.

One of my favourite video game series, it was a major surprise to see this pop up in my feed but a very welcoming one at that. Can't wait to see what I may have overlooked over the years, dark or innuendo-ridden haha (and seeing the stuff from the comment of the content that didn't make the cut oh mann surprised some of that was even in the first game). The first three games, though the second and third moreso, were already dark and amazing in their own way, so to see potentially even more is potentially insanee

All good dude, yeahh the newer games have been split fans heavily but all in all all most of the games (most cause uh... Sticker Star hahaha) in the series have something to offer and are enjoyable in their own sense haha (at least I feel like they aree, Colour Splash has great visuals, music and writing, and Origami King has that too with the bonus of some really hard hitting moments as well. Despite their limitations on stuff like character designs and stories that deviate from Nintendo's vision of a Mario game, the devs have done a really good job, I feel, trying to amp it up everywhere else).
And yea, it was actually a really insightful video. I was really surprised to hear stuff like Shadow Queen inventing the Pit of 100 Trials for torture, and was also surprised to see so much information about SPM that I had never even known about, from the entire in depth back story about the Ancients and uh... how passionate they were hahaha (like I always thought that the Sammer Guys weren't related to each other, just some dudes hired by the King, but to hear all 100 of them are siblings and children of the King and his lover?? Bruh hahaha) to how the Ancients created the Pixls for work using the Dark Prognosticus (surprising how its implied the book existed before them, wonder how was it even created??), even small stuff like Mimi's lost identity and O'Chunk's tragic past!
Made me wonder a bit about the game too. Maybe this is a bit too dark, but Bobbery's wife is named Scarlette and they died of an unknown illness, I wonder if they were named that cause of Scarlet Fever. Or with a passing comment/theory I saw of Dimentio specifically stating "The Power of Luigi" when lamenting how he lost in the finale, and how this power was formed through Luigi's negative emotions of being the shadow of Mario, something like that haha
(Sorry for the ramble haha, I get carried away)

Right--as much as I do like Color Splash and The Origami King, I found that their turn-based systems were overall more of a detriment than not (especially with the standard enemies--the boss fights I did really enjoy though, moreso with TOK). Super had the opposite problem where standard enemies were more fun but the boss fights were too easy. If they tweaked SPM's formula a bit, they could really make an engaging gameplay system

They have a lot of story to work with, with SPM imo. World building as well. There’s so many strange details that allow for possibilities rather than objects in the game existing simply to exist. Sure, it may sound like a bit of a stretch for a game that isn’t a favorite for most, but it’s definitely there.

    I have also two points.
First its about the Crystal Palace. The Magician in the Star Valley, i guess it was Merlons Nephew or sth, tells the player that the Crystal Palace was ,,overrun'' by the troops of the Crystal King. Kinda weird to say it like that. Think about that the Crystal Palace is quiet like a graveyard and the kinda Creepy Music, i was always thinking that, just maybe the palace guards all have been Brutally murdered there in the fight as the Crystal King arrives. Just a Theory....but idk.
Second a very Creepy Aspect about The Doopliss Story. Me as a german has obviously played the german Version. Here his Name is ,,Rumpel''. This Actually comes from an Old German Kids Story Called ,, Rumpelstilzchen''. There the Man called Rumpelstilzchen, wants to steal the Queens Kid and....wants to eat the Kid. And first cook it. The Queen must discover his Name in i believe seven Days it was or the kid dies. Yes...wtf😮😂 And yes we in Germany have the Creepiest kid Storys Ever😅😊

Super gets such a bad rap. It has an amazing story, it tried doing something different than turn based combat and came up with a genuinely great combat system that combined RPG and OG Mario mechanics. If SPM wasn't a part of the Paper Mario franchise, it would've been lauded as one of the best Mario games ever

    • @flyforce16
      @flyforce16 2 года назад +3

@@greatbrandini3967 I respect your opinion but politely disagree by a considerable margin. I genuinely found Super to be a very mediocre game with bad and boring platforming + combat, very undercooked 2D/3D flipping mechanics, very ugly art direction including unmemorable partner characters, and overwrought writing. Not the worst game I've ever played, no, but I'd put it around Color Splash or Origami King in terms of quality. I admire how Super was willing to go out there and be something really different; I just personally didn't think it worked well, which was a bitter letdown coming directly after TTYD. I believe that Sticker Star and Color Splash releasing was the best thing to ever happen to SPM, honestly. Just my two cents of course as I know many out there do love Super, especially people whose first console was the Wii.

    • @greatbrandini3967
      @greatbrandini3967 2 года назад

@@flyforce16 I'll agree on some of your points. I don't think it's the art so much as the character/enemy design that's off putting. My first console was an N64, and I even remember the trailer for the original Paper Mario (Bowser had Peach tied up over a paper shredder). I rented the original from Blockbuster countless times, and I bought TTYD and beat it at least 6 times. This was all before SPM, which I think I beat in about 2 weekend's of play. I was disappointed in how easy the final boss was and wished the fight had been harder, especially when compared to The Shadow Queen and Bonetail. At the end of the day, I recognized that the other Pixls just weren't really the main cast, and Tippi, Count Bleck, and the other villains were the true main cast. Bowser and the X-Nauts were extremely underwhelming and were nothing more than your typical video game villains who are completely unrelatable.
After playing through SPM, I knew it was inferior to PM and TTYD and figured the games should go back to the old combat system and it would be fine. Well, we all saw how Sticker Star turned out, and I'd much rather replay SPM over any of the other newer entries, though I gotta say that Origami King was at least good enough for me to call it replayable, despite the horrendously boring combat system against normal enemies

Wasn't too fond on Super Paper Mario's story personally. I think it was stretching things for Mario in a way I'm not a fan of.
While creative freedom is good. I felt at that point they stopped telling a story about Mario they were telling a story which just happened to feature the Mario characters were just shunted into roles that don't fit. I really didn't like in SPM that the reason Mario is the chosen hero is just because the Book says so, or that Luigi is very important because the book says so. I thought the prophecies were kind of a cheap way to let them basically take the plot wherever they wanted to without any natrual build up.
I think this lead to conflicts between SPMs writing and pre-established expectations for characters. SPM has a strange opening where they have Luigi be really brave and competent, and leading some of Bowser's minions in Blecks Castle until he gets mind controlled. Then he's sinister as Mr. L and then when he's cured of the mind control he stops being brave and is cowering in the Underwhere. It's like Luigi is being pulled two directions, by the brave "Man in Green" IS wrote for SPM and the skittish, clumsy character you expect from Luigi being pre-established Mario and previous Paper Marios.
SPM Bowser's ridiculously stupid and soft and always loses, when in general Mario he's cunning and tends to initially get the better of Mario by exploiting whatever power is available. It's kind of out of character that he had absolutely no interest in the Chaos Heart's power.
While SS didn't have much of any story, I sort of think Paper Mario did benefit from reigning in the stories. Color Splash and Origami King have more grounded scenarios and as a result there doesn't really need to be prophecies to excuse Mario's role as hero, and the characters are more in-line with previous iterations of them.

To be fair to Luigi he's portrayed as a bit of a braggart in the Paper Mario games, wanting the attention Mario has, as he was jealous in his diary in PM64, and bragged about his adventure in PMTTYD despite it not fully true.

That spear & shield one isn’t actually a real Pixl design--I made it in photoshop! I did this because only 11 of the 12 original Pixls can actually join Mario (they are implied to be the same ones from the legend), so the 12th is likely the one who died fighting the Pixl Queen, as Carson mentions. We aren’t given any hints as to what this lost Pixl looked like, but there is an unused ladder-like Pixl found in an early version of the title screen
