macOS Monterey vs Windows 11 Icons!

- Both Apple's macOS Monterey 12.0 and Microsoft's Windows 11 are currently in beta stage. However they both have various interesting icons. Although almost all the Monterey icons are retained from Big Sur, this would be an interesting comparison video regardless.

I like how graphic design has gone through a character evolution of sorts. Skeuomorphism was ornate but too gaudy, while Flat was striking, but too primitive. And modern design (neomorphism?) is something between the two, uniting the best of both worlds, being both simple and striking at small scale, while being ornate and elegant at large scale.
meanwhile gnome 40 is still skeuomorphic
material design is shadowy without gradient
I still prefer flat design though personally, I don't like all the blur and shadow and gradients everywhere idk why.

macOS had more of a skeuomorphism design but still minimalist while Windows aim for a more flatter design with a lot of gradient
Windows is also a bit skeumorphic, with all the shadows.
@Fluid Cat the Windows 8, 10 and Mobile icons were by far the flattest though. It looked quite depressing to me.
Edit: the person I was replying to seems to have deleted their comment. I think they were originally talking about how the newer operating systems get more and more oversimplified.
@Preston Jackson that emoji is annoying in some cases, yes, but this much?
@Preston Jackson i dont see any dislikes on his comment.
>More flatter
Did you mean more flatterererer?
As a graphic designer, I can say that MacOS icons are inconsistent. They are designed in different styles, look at Notepad, Safari and say Messages - one is skeuomorphic, other is flattish, the latter is more 3D, extruded. Windows icons are more consistent in style starting with Windows 10. Heck Windows team delivered emojis in the same style, brilliant. For the first time ever I can say that designers at Windows did greater job than in Apple.
You are comparing a book to a pen and saying one is flat and the other skeuomorphic
None of macos icons is actually flat and as a graphic designer you should notice the shadows on icons too
@@albanos.13 I didn't say "flat", read once again my comment. Also, just compare side by side system icons on latest MacOS and Windows11, you will definitely see what I am talking about.
I would take a few inconsistencies that look nice together than system wide icons stretching 30 years in differences.

@@christopherfortney2544 But the reality is, deeper system icons you tend to see only once in a while, while facade icons - icons that are at the forefront of UI you see EVERY day.
10 or even 5 years ago I wouldn't even imagine that I would say this, but now I feel that Windows icons are more tasteful this time.
Windows logos 10 years ago looked great. Windows 7 icons are really good.
@@kianvandenakker126 I preferred OS X icons back then. They looked more realistic and some icons already had a monochrome equivalent. Vista and 7's icons were too glossy.

This is making me consider upgrading. Who cares that they removed the option to put the taskbar on the side or color the title bar, you can easily install things that let you do that.
@@badpiggies988 you can actually put the taskbar on the side again in Windows 11, and you have the color options.

I like how windows 11 folders all have the same design but with their own icon each. Much more consistent
Love the color too, easier to identify which folder is which.
Windows 11 has that perfect sweet spot where it has minimal and clean icons, but it's not too minimal and still preservers the look from the old icons.
Win icons seem more consistent with gradient touchup while mac icons seem more Skeuomorphism design. Both are awesome.
Weird Perspective. I know but, Windows icons looks relatively consistent and of similar "family" of icons to each other. While Mac's are Aesthetically pleasing but kinda feels incompatible with each other as a whole "family" of icons.

on macOS, some icons are too detailed compared to others, and on Windows there is some balance in terms of icon detail.
Gotta be honest here, I’m not a huge fan of the MacOS icons. While it does look nice, there are some inconsistencies with the icons. The system drivers icon is a perfect example of this. Windows seems more consistent with the UI now and I’d give Microsoft an applause here.
Ah yes, Microsoft, the company known for their large-scale UI consistency. To be honest, the icons in macOS are kinda MORE consistent, if you think about it. All of them conform to the same rounded square shape. Windows icons are more free to be what they like though.
@@d-o-n-u-tS They've revamped the entire OS, so it shouldn't have the inconstancy issues like Windows 10, witch was basically really just a useable remake of Windows 8/8.1.
@w Not excusing that, but where those assets are will never be seen by most users. MMC and Local Group Policy editor using old designs, while annoying, is a non-issue
@w Remember your car still has parts from the early 1900 century
Moreover Microsoft started this flat UI trend that every company in the world is following including Apple. Even the MacOS Big Sur flat icons with a bit of 3d effect was inspired from the new Windows builds. I mean just look at MacOS catalina icons, those were just flat
