I've seen Vince sing this song at several celebrity's funerals. He sang them all so beautifully at all but one. But that one was definitely the most touching. It was George Jones' funeral, and he couldn't make it through. George was like a father and mentor to Vince. Patti Loveless was there to fill in where Vince struggled.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I am partial to my Southern Rock and Metal, hair bands, etc. But there is something about country music you won't find in other genres they way you do here. When it is time to slow down and let the feelz rise up, songs like this is what it is all about. Rock/Metal can have you banging your head driving with the window down on a nice day but when you need to connect, country can reach in and hug your heart like a warm blanket and give you comfort.

You'll really get the full impact of this song then. Another great song of Vince's is "When I Call Your Name". It was his first hit. Patty Loveless joins him in the chorus beautifully. Very haunting. His voice is so velvety smooth.

  • @cpayne4956

I loved that. It's such a beautiful song and has helped hundreds of thousands of people in their time of need. Keith said it looked like the Grand Ole Opry, actually it was the Grand Ole Opry playing at Carnegie Hall in New York. So they had the famous circle I believe, and the Grand Ole Opry mic stands.
Vince Gill has stated two things I wanted to mention...
    1) He started writing the song when another Bluegrass/Country artist Keith Whitley passed away. The lines You weren't afraid to face the devil , you were no stranger to the rain is two-fold: on one side it's borrowing the lyrics of Keith Whitley's song I'm No Stranger To The Rain in a tribute to him, and the other side is about his brother, who was in a severe car accident, the result being brain damage. Though he struggled, he kept going with life until he passed in 1993, 25 years after the accident. Vince wrote part of the song after Keith Whitley passed in 1989, but shelved it unfinished. When his brother died 4 years later, he finished it and was apprehensive about sharing it, but was coached into recording it in 1995. Ricky Skaggs and patty Loveless are on the recording, and Alison Krauss sang and played live now and then.
    2) One quote from Vince a while go during an interview was about learning when NOT to play or sing and the importance of that lesson. Here it's demonstrated: He played rhythm guitar with no lead guitar picking for which he is very known for, but he let Ricky play his mandolin and Alison play her fiddle and backed off from the mic to let them do their part. Such professionalism....He knows when to play, and when not to play and sing. He didn't want his picking or singing to overshadow their great voices or instruments. A true class act in my book.

He originally wrote it when Keith Whitley passed and was able to finish it when his brother passed. Keith is from my hometown of Sandy Hook, Elliott County, Kentucky. Ricky Skaggs is from the next county over (Lawrence). He and Keith started out together singing and playing with Ralph Stanley and Bill Monroe (BIG names in Bluegrass). All 3 of them are phenomenal on their own, together they are even better. Alison has 27 Grammys to her name plus countless IBMA awards and others. Ricky Skaggs is HUGE in both country and bluegrass.
He promised Bill Monroe that he would do everything he could to further bluegrass music. He has concentrated solely on Bluegrass for the last 20 years.
Then there is Vince. He started his singing career with a pop band named Pure Prairie League. There is a live version of Pure Prairie League doing Aimee. He had a fantastic solo career and is now touring with The Eagles.
Alison was introducing Vince at one of her shows as he was doing a duet with her; She stated that the first time she heard Vince sing she though it was a woman.

Wonderful job on the music reaction the Vince Gill is amazing and Alison krauss and Ricky skaggs of course are also amazing there's another version of this outlet out there with Vince Gill and Patty loveless and Ricky skaggs that is equally amazing and yes the general reaction to an exceptional performance of go rest high on the mountain is met with dead silence and all as it should be you've mentioned on several occasions that you really appreciate feisty female singers and I know that Loretta Lynn has come up I was one of the ones who brought her up but she's got a song that you would probably laugh until you cried for one thing about Loretta Lynn is when she writes a song she rides her life and one of the songs that she wrote and sang was you a woman enough to take my man and it is well worth a listen.

Vince Gill has never been underrated. The guys a guitar legend! In the 70’s he was frontman for the country rock band Pure Prairie League, in the 80’s the Notorious Cherry Bombs, he went solo in 83. In 2010 The Time Jumpers who I’m not familiar with and The Eagles in 2017. Recorded over 20 studio albums, charted over 40 singles on US Billboard and has sold more than 26 million albums. He has “18” CMA Awards including 2 Entertainer of the Year Awards, 5 male vocalist of the yr., 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other male country artist. He’s in The Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2016 he was inducted into the Guitar Center Rock Walk by Joe Walsh. In 2017 Vince Gill and Deacon Frey were hired by the Eagles to fill the spot of Glenn Frey. So when someone says he’s an underrated guitarist, that’s poppy squash. He’s anything but.

Definitely check out his big breakthrough hit from 1990, "When I Call Your Name." Other great ones from Vince: "Pocket Full Of Gold," "Never Knew Lonely," "Look At Us," "Take Your Memory With You," "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away," "No Future In The Past," "Trying To Get Over You."

Thank you both. One of the most heart touching songs. Vince has a number of great songs. The two of you were talking about rock being confused, and then maybe country. Allison has work with Robert Plant They recently just released their second album. Again thank you for this reaction tonight. 🙏🎶🎵

You just did a reaction to George Jones singing "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Vince Gill was a dear friend to George Jones and was his protégé, when George died in 2013 Vince Gill sang this song at his funeral which was held at the Grand Ole Opry on May 2, 2013. Vince got a little emotional about half way through, it is still one of the most emotional and memorable performances I've ever seen. I don't know if there was a dry eye in the house when he finished. A singer named Patty Loveless joined him in harmony instead of Alison Krauss, here is the link ruclips.net/video/l11oCvBxnQ0/видео.html

Loved it, loved your reaction. But I'm surprised by 2 things, 1 that there aren't more request for Vince, the man has 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other Country Male Artist and 18 CMA awards. His gorgeous high tenor is just, something you didn't know your soul needed to hear...until you heard it. He's kind of an OG. The 2nd thing is that Keith you've not heard of Vince Gill because once again out of the Country World comes another massive Guitar player, actually Vince can play just about any "Stringed" instrument. But he's actually been inducted into "The Guitar Center Rock Walk" and his induction was done by Joe Walsh of the Eagles, who he played with for a while. Vince plays on tons of peoples albums, not just country but rock, bluegrass, contemporary christian, etc. He's a pretty big deal in Country Music. This song is one of my favs, as are "When I Call Your Name" and "High Lonesome Sound w/Allison Krauss and Union Station" and "I Still Believe in You" and a ton more. You can't really go wrong with Vince Gill.

This is how the requests currently look for Vince, including yours:
5 When I call your name
      3 No place that far
      2 Oklahoma Swing
      2 Killer Guitar Player
2 I still believe in you
      1 That’s my story
      1 Little Lisa Jane
1 Its hard to kiss the lips
      1 one more last chance
      1 Whenever you come around
      1 Pocket full of gold
      1 High Lonesome Sound
      1 Never knew lonely
1 Give me one more last chance
