White skin color was the symbol of richness and high social class in East Asia because common people had to work for a long time in the field and most of them had tanned skin. So, it's common thing to prefer white skin color in Asian countries which found agriculture main national industry and it's traditional standard of beauty. And it's sure that Asians tend to prefer big eyes but it's just another standard of beauty Asians like. There are many people preferring small eyes. So, it's a little bit difficult to generalize the standards of beauty.
Fair skin may be a cultural construct, but things like big eyes, small face, small nose, are all signals that denote youth and is desirable among all human females. Likewise things like small waist, big hips, ample breasts denote fertility, and clear skin, clear eyes, and lean body denote health. These are all things that are biologically ingrained and universal standards of beauty.
@@kevinnguyen8631 Indonesians have big eyes too, but they still think big eyes are more beautiful. Filipinos like what is less common, so light skin and small eyes are considered more beautiful
It's totally true baby. If u have white skin, ppl will call you beautiful :) it applied in my hometown. So many girls use whitening product. They dont care if the product contain mercury. As long as they have white skin, they will do anything lol
Exactly. So many cultures & ppl r quite open & tolerant, BUT if we're talking bout POPULAR CULTURE it's mostly influenced by only a FEW big cities in d country. & Our systems (education, economy) & the entertainment industry is very centralized.
I think it's also because of the singularity of the interviewee. I'm sure there is a more of the beauty standard somehow. For example clear skin and hourglass or thin body as said in the vid.
I not really agree with you, i mean majority indonesia wearing hijab ,and i mean for have standar beauty for a country you must see opinion majority people in that country,i know in indonesia also have people not wearing hijab, but they are still less ,It's like voting and which one gets the most votes is the reference
yes. the questions were not structured very well and they gave different questions to different interviewees. so that's why the interviewees have different answers.
Too many different answer,😂 Its mean that Indonesian doesnt have specific ideal beauty. It just people's standart. Objective and Subjective. And the important thing is good Character. 👍
each different province in Indonesia has vast different culture and mindset. Sometime it so different as if they are from another continent to each other.
Because most of Indonesians are family oriented, so naturally they can be attracted (as first factor) by people who have good characters like caring, humble, kind, mindful, loving kids, etc.
@@kurnie17 lol not really, in my city (i am live in Lombok), most man and woman I know always said they prefer humble, smart, religious, and romantic man or female than pretty or handsome one. Their reason? Because when they married what they want is the characteristic than their body. There also some people want handsome and beautifull patner but from what I saw most of the people I know prefer their character than face. (sorry with my english haha 😁).
As an indonesian i’m brave enough to say that most of the people here cares about the appearances too much. I don’t know exactly about other countries but in Indonesia having a fair skin, slim face, big eyes, tall nose and pigmented lips are basically all you need to be accepted as a “beautiful” person. Yes, they might say “oh, the character’s the most important” but tbh? It’s might just be the same. It’s about physical appearance. It’s really sad that almost the whole world have the same perspective which vary from their beauty standards (physical beauty standards). In my opinion beauty standard shouldn’t even exist in real life.
@@rosemarymetallic9741 nah idk where arr u from but yeah look is good for first impression, look only a big factor if someone just want playing around, but for marriage, i can bet indonesian really both man and woman put character first (the one who genuinely want marriage)
i know so many guys that have literally never been in a gym or dieted but want a perfectly slim or toned girl. so weird that they want that but don't work on themselves lol
I might get a lot of hate on this but. Suggestion. Can you please not make everything involving indonesia about hijab or religion? Maybe find a topic that won't involve any "religion view" and just Indonesian as general? And maybe get a more diverse interviewee? I feel that those that are not wearing hijab rarely have a say on anything
Bring hijab is good click bait, as the main topic should be just what is Indonesia beauty standard , well its their channel they can do whatever topic they want. Maybe next time Assian Boss could interview Malaysia beauty standard with muslim hijabi to have more perspective
really.. NKRI Indonesia is not ''Muslim'' at all they only use Islam as a tool and ''label'' for fake piety while practicing black magic and spiritualism..
Perhaps they want to alienate woman who wear hijab, They thought the hijab is something that bad, but it's not, for me, hijab bring me to freedom, Free from a lot of lifestyle demands, and what's wrong with that..
@City Of Charles Dirt To be clear, hijab has styles too. I think it really depends on the person. I personally wear hijab bcs I randomly want to wear it lol, I'm a simple person, if I feel clicked, I wear it. There's no restriction here wearing hijab, even many hijabis kids, their mothers don't wear one. It's just a choice here for some people. Maybe force for some people too. I feel like any styles got nothing to do oppression or freedom, It really depends on the invidual wellbeings and preferences. Just like me, I wear hijab first then my mother following a few years later😂 but strangely, many hijabis are scared of women wearing black niqab due to terrorisms. My friend wears niqab, but a colourful one, she's free willed girl, travelling everywhere alone sometimes with her friends. Hijab, niqab, khimar, or whatever don't really represent spritual level of someone. If the hijabi likes to torture cats or dogs or whatever, well hijab doesn't really help hahahaha :p
Ira Bakri It’s because ppl who don’t wear hijabs are curious about those who do. I honestly want to know how ppl with hijabs or those see ppl in hijabs on a daily basis perceive beauty. I just wanna know, no mean to offend. I used to think that it’s torturous to wear hijab but now I know that ppl are proud to wear hijabs. I do see the beauty in it now thanks to this interview.
agak aneh ketika ada pertanyaan kenapa harus merawat rambut meski pake hijab? bukannya jawabannya dah jelas, ga ada pertanyaan yg lebih berbobot gitu 😌

It's funny how Asian Boss always looking for hijab topic in indonesia. I'm muslim from indonesia, but this is ridiculous for me. What about Malaysia?? They have many hijabi too, they even has Dato' Siti Nurhaliza as a super popular hijabi pop singer. Dear Asian Boss. If you want to make topic about indonesia, it's more relevan if you talking about different cultural and language in here. Fair skin is still a beauty standard, but the culture of skin bleaching is slowly disappear, u can trust me I'm Indonesian. The beauty standard is getting more simple these days, I belive Indonesia will reach the point when the beauty standard is just to have clear skin and good character
I don't even know skin bleaching did got popular before I just know that for quite a long time, people went for skin therapy or simply use whitening cream or just cosmetics
nope, for the skin it's best to have the fair one. exotic skin is oftentimes considered ugly and not attractive. trust me, i'm indonesian and that's just the reality.
@Nataly Hartman i get it. it's just the beauty standard here. doesn't mean i agree with it. from my observation, people with fair skin are still regarded more highly than people with exotic skin. i got this impression that fairer is preferable since darker is often considered dirty. though in my opinion, it's true that beauty isn't all about physical appearance^^
@Nataly Hartman Yeah skin color does not determine attractiveness. But in Indonesia, the majority of people are following the east Asian/ eurocentric beauty standards (at least from what I've seen). In my school, all of my male friends prefer girls with lighter skin (I'm a boy btw). I don't really talk with girls about which guys they like but judging from the girls that have a celebrity as their profile pictures It's usually is of a k-pop star or a white boy. Darker skin is not preferred and is mostly considered dirty Idk why cause a girl I like in school actually has golden-brown skin and I think any natural skin color is the best skin color.
Physical standart is probably symetrical and proportional face. Not too much eye bag. Clean skin. And yeah, fair skin or exotic skin doesn't really matter 🤔. I think its also depends on where you live. Cause Indonesia have many province. But in Indonesia, physical appearance is just a BONUS :v. If you have pretty face but act badly, usually you will considered as prideful mean girl 😂.. that usually appears as antagonist in sinetron wkwkkw. No matter is the appearence, your nice act is still number one. But, yeah, you should still take care of yourself. Because you still need appear nice and neatly. Just my opinion.
Indonesian ideal beauty standard : fair skin. That's the reality. Many Indonesian girls want to have fair skin like East Asian Girls. In fact, Indonesian girls have exotic and beautiful skin but when you have that type of skin, you'll be considered as black
Similar to the Philippines in language and being very religious (but Philippines is more Christian in the majority so not a lot of women wear hijabs in the Philippines if not in the more Southern parts usually). I hope that people will stop using whitening soaps thinking dark skin is not as attractive. _I appreciated that they interviewed many different people, because you start to realize that there is not only one taste or ideal for beauty!_ We all have different things we are attracted to-so never put yourself down in comparing to others and know that for someone you are perfectly beautiful or handsome! 🙂 Mabuhay tayo lahat!
Indonesian not East Asia (Chinese). Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines classified as Southeast Asia (Indian+Chinese+Oceania). Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam classifies as Indochina (Indian+Chinese)
George Costarica nah, you’re just being uneducated and ignorant about the sociocultural contexts of people’s differing views. Everyone who’s well-read would know that the desire to look “white” or “fair-skinned” in Asian countries comes from the collective experience of either colonialism (when South-East Asian countries were occupied by lighter-skinned foreigners) or just general class-consciousness (of which peasants and commoners generally considered to have tanned or darker skin tone than people of higher rank in society).
I think the subtitles can't provide what actually "mahram" means. "Mahram" is not just refer to close friends and family. Bcs if you're women and your close friend is a man, then he is not mahram at all. I think it's better to add explaination to some words that don't have comparison in english such as "mahram" It do applies to other words to
No, the subtitle could have been more descriptive, such as what you gave. Mahram being close friends and family and quite possibly the friends being female not male can see.
@@mikefishermagic A "mahram" is basically a person that you cannot marry according to islamic law; such as your dad/mom, brother/sister and some other close relatives.
As a Gen Z Indonesia, I can 100% confirm that fair skin, skinny, and having extravagant face features are not the desired beauty standar anymore. Nowadays I guess guys (and girls, too) see the beauty in every shape and size. That doesn't mean there is no beauty standard, but it's just wayyyyy simpler now.
I already went to Indonesia, and I am happy that they have no official beauty standard. Even when media said white skin and being thin are great but not all girls have to apply that, and they are naturally pretty.
Very true, I'm glad i live in Indonesia.. the beauty standards is very flexible and every people has different face and unique. Maybe it's because of how diverse the culture and ethnic there are in Indonesia.
As an indonesian, wearing hijab / jilbab is actually more prevalent today than a few years ago. In the past indonesia's islam has distinct taste compared to that of middle east's. Indonesia's muslims were very religious and faithful yet more tolerant and peaceful. Lately there has been a movement of using hijab or jilbab, many from their own conscience and religious conviction, but some public personalities use hijab for personal gain (artists who never wore hijab will suddenly use one if they want to enter politics, some of these even had sex scandals). But some people that do not use hijab are very faithful. So i think we cannot judge one's spirituality just based on whether they use religious coverings or ornaments.
Religious not for covering Its law in itself When u not wear it I don't think u are faithfull too tho.. U Deny half of the law u pick half the law Whow u are really 1000% Indonesian Shame on u
@@avioracrown6967 look into the sermons of prominent ulamas, not the ones on the fringes, and you will see that it is heart that truly matters. Religious covering definitely doesnt cover half of what the religion teaches. If you believe it truly covers half of what islam teaches, then how low is your understanding of religion. So no im not ashamed of this. You should be ashamed for ascribing whether a person is righteous or not based on head coverings alone. What a person does when he/she is alone is what truly reflects that person. Do you do amal and zakat in front of everyone for people's praises or in quietness so that the above sees it?

even with all those answers in reality most indonesian people arent so strict about that standard. most indonesians dont bully those who dont meet that kind of standard. those standard isnt being forced in indonesia. and most indonesians dont really do everything to meet those standards. most of us still believe to preserve everything that god gave us. a bit beauty care is fine. nothing too extreme..
I think you should state in the title that it's applied to women in Indonesia, cause there's no male beauty standarts discussed. I'd like to hear about male ones too though!
Im from indonesia, i can tell you, just like everywhere else, for male you only need money, lots of them, and keep the appearance of religious person then you're good to go, even polygamy is a possibility

Indonesia is a nation consist of tens of thousands of islands, currently has a population of 270 million and growing. The term Indonesian refers to a citizenship, not reffering to any race or ethnic. Thus Indonesia has many different indigineous ethnicity which has different phisical apperiance. Plus there are other ethnic groups coming from mainland China, subcontinent India and the Arabian peninsula which has been in mix marriage for hundreds of years. Another mix is from hundreds of years of European colonization. Thus the standard of look and beauty of an Indonesian person is varies. The common look of an Indonesian person is just like other South East Asian people which is mix of north east Asia and south Asia (thus it is called Indochina) , light brown skin, medium size eyes, medium size nose, black hair (straight and curly) , this look usually potrait as being an Indonesian with minorities such as east Asian look (chinese decendent) , Indian & Arabian look and on easter part of Indonesia is Melanesian people who has darker skin color and curly black hair. All and all every look is beautiful and we all proud as Indonesian, there is no such thing as 1 standard beauty look. The look of being light skin, big round eyes or small Asian eyes, hair color, certain body shape are all creation of the worldwide cosmetic industry. It is not wrong to use these products as long as it is safe, it keeps economy going, however do not get too excesive. We Indonesians are proud of each of our ethnicity look, as long as healthy.
I don't live there anymore but when I was growing up in Indonesia, the most 'popular' girls/boys and deemed as ideally 'beautiful' or 'handsome' usually were those with fair skin, larger eyes (of course the nose has to be a certain way, proportionate and slightly on the longer side==the term my mom always said "mancung"). The people who often fit these generally were "Indo" or what these days termed as "Hapa." They were so popular and I remember all the boys (and girls) always crushed on the students who are mixed-race (the general ones whom I bumped into were, being Dutch father/mother with Indonesian mother/father). As for ideal, back then, for female: slender. For male: tall and athletic. In HS, I did notice the boys did start to like "curvy" figure, but the women still had to be more on the slim side.
Most non-muslim won't take a second thought to claim hijabis backdated. However, in this video, literally EVERY hijabi put out pretty solid informations and constructive points addressing three most important issues related to the concept of beauty at present- the current craze of altering our bodies, the importance of inner beauty/characters over physical and that hijabis can care about their beauty even when it's not on display for males to appreciate, rather for our own satisfaction. None of these hijabis sounded disappointed or hopeful about not meeting or meeting their stated standards. Kudos to these ladies. They sounded confident and very articulated to me at least!

It's very true, such a eurocentric ideal, and yet most Caucasians tan. I'm Nigerian and I've seen so many Nigerians and other blacks bleach their skin to the point it looks laughable.
It's an ancient beauty standard in East/Southeast Asia. Fair skin meant nobility, because you didn't work out in the sun. It's not recent at all and has nothing to do with racism. It's called "colorism", and it exists in the west too, where it's the opposite - a tan skin is beautiful, pale skin is not. It's the exact same phenomenon.
@@AngryKittens yeah this is widespread so deeply rooted in our culture. Even if someone see a beautiful darker skin girl, they won't say she is beautiful. They'd say she's "hitam manis" basically saying darkly cute or sweet. Idk the english equivalent.

As a Filipino, I am sure Indonesia has a very wide range of beauty given its many ethnic groups plus its colorful history of migration and colonization. I find the tan ones the most attractive like Anggun. Indonesian beauty, unlike Korean beauty, is not hyped alot and that I think makes Indonesians even more beautiful. I just have one question, is the hijab a recent religious cultural trend? Do Indonesian women in the past decades strictly followed wearing hijab?
@@arnaruna Similar with Malaysia and Southern Philippines and even the Middle East? I saw some pictures of ladies from these regions around the 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s and they don't wear hijab.
Thank you, Asian Boss, for doing more videos on Indonesians. It's a breath of fresh air to watch, being Indonesian myself. I feel that we as Asians tend to get left out in most topics pertaining to Asia, as do other Southeast Asian countries. It's sad and true that the ideal standard of beauty for Indonesian women is to have fair skin and big eyes. It's like that all over Southeast and East Asia really. Dates back to olden days when having light skinned equated wealth (not out in the sun a lot) while darker skin equated poverty (working in the fields). I myself am Indonesian of Chinese descent, and though my skin is light, it does get tan very quickly in the sun, and recently going back home this summer.. many family members would point out how "dark" I look and offered me many whitening products. Whereas, now that I live in the US, tan skin is considered the ideal beauty standard. It's very interesting to see the many different kinds of ideal beauty standards in different societies. What I love most about this interview is how each Indonesian emphasized that character and personality are most important. That at the end of the day, beauty fades, but your heart and character remain. And of Indonesians' friendliness and openness. That, to me, is why I do miss living in Indonesia. There is just such a stark difference in how open, friendly, and community-minded Indonesians are compared to the highly individualistic, sometimes rude, attitude in the US. But again - the US is diverse and each state has its own unique personality. Looking forward to watching more Indonesian-related videos!
i dont think there is something called beauty standart in here, indonesia, as long as you r attractive and have a great character people will love you.
As an English only speaker,Indonesian *if that's the correct wording* Is such a beautifully unfamiliar language. The world is vast and different. embrace the differences in strangers.
Yes, indonesian or bahasa Indonesia are correct And yes, every language is very vastly different. That's why we organize languages in families, and english and indonesian are in a different language family
You should try learning it! It's quite easy for a English native speaker (from what I've heard), with no noun gender, verb conjugations and a SVO word order.
so the conclusion is that indonesia do not have its own specific beauty standard. the questions are answered by their very own type of ‘attractiveness’.
I have lived around many places in Jawa, and now staying in kalimantan. Obviously, in my experience we have diverse beauty standard not only in community rather in individual level. I love this society, work hard but the more important is to keep chill...
MashaAllah I am a Maranao ( People of the Lake) and I found most of the word they use are exactly the same with our native Maranao words like "Badan" means body to us, "Bnar" means True to us, "Manis or Manisa" is means beautiful to us, "Mata" is eyes, "Tindeg" means the way he stand, gieto to us that.. I'm dying.. Could it be that Maranaos are akin to Indonesians 😢 Philippines history says our ancestors are partly Malays from Indonesia and Malaysian Brunei, and Arabs they came to the Philippines through Ice Bridge. Now I know why the National Language Tagalog are mixed Arab Malay Spanish..

Fair skin and big eyes seem to be the common standard of beauty in most of East Asia.
Except in the Philippines (about the eyes). Notice in the Philippines video, more people said slanted eyes were beautiful.
@@minim6981 well mostly because most of them have big eyes
@@kevinnguyen8631 Indonesians have big eyes too, but they still think big eyes are more beautiful. Filipinos like what is less common, so light skin and small eyes are considered more beautiful

I think there is no ideal beauty standard in indonesia. Cause we have a lot of culture. And all of their answer is subjective.

Nah....such a dumbass asf...everything must be related to the muslim/hijab..the content's creator must be out of for thinking some ideas.

Beauty standard in Indonesia
Clean body, no matter fair skin or exotic skin
Attitude and intelligent. Thats beautiful
nope, for the skin it's best to have the fair one. exotic skin is oftentimes considered ugly and not attractive. trust me, i'm indonesian and that's just the reality.
Darker skin is not preferred and is mostly considered dirty Idk why cause a girl I like in school actually has golden-brown skin and I think any natural skin color is the best skin color.
be realistic pls... beauty standar in indonesia = fair skin, double eyelid, thin, etc
@Monokuma No. I mean black here is more like dark skin but Indonesian people will say it as black
@Monokuma as Indonesian Black stereotipe is like indigenous skin, not brighter than Caucasian, but not black as African etc. (No racism)
@Monokuma think light brown skin like the rural mexicans. Yeah, it is considered as black over here.... I know it's ridiculous.
Because many Indonesian youngsters beauty standards are Japanese,Chinese and S.Korean 😐
We are just "commercial victim" of beauty product
Similar to the Philippines in language and being very religious (but Philippines is more Christian in the majority so not a lot of women wear hijabs in the Philippines if not in the more Southern parts usually). I hope that people will stop using whitening soaps thinking dark skin is not as attractive.
_I appreciated that they interviewed many different people, because you start to realize that there is not only one taste or ideal for beauty!_ We all have different things we are attracted to-so never put yourself down in comparing to others and know that for someone you are perfectly beautiful or handsome! 🙂 Mabuhay tayo lahat!

So i think we cannot judge one's spirituality just based on whether they use religious coverings or ornaments.

hello dear 💋🎻❤️
Unique Bali you should be the interviewer for this video. Thank you for the explanation.

But when your face is not good ,then no one will look at your inner beauty,

Not just these days. Since my parents time fair complexion has been the fad. And still difficult to convince my parents how wrong that is.

Yes, indonesian or bahasa Indonesia are correct
