    SORRY, DO NOT MISS THE NARRATIVE. What a coincidence-I was just at Rawagede a couple of weeks ago. The Rawagede Massacre was just one of many brutal acts, as violence was the lifeblood of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Yet, it’s the only one the Dutch government has begrudgingly acknowledged, and only because other massacres didn’t leave behind enough evidence. Even now, both the Dutch government and its people shirk accountability, refusing to give Indonesia the respect we deserve. They’re always the first to back any secession attempt, clearly hoping for Indonesia to crumble. After centuries of exploitation and suffering, it’s beyond disgraceful that they still deny us the basic dignity of living as a truly independent nation.

    • @da.boyyyy
      @da.boyyyy 3 месяца назад

      one guy, his name is 'Jeffrey Pondaag' sued the dutch government for the things that happened in Rawagede and he won!!! he brought over the children (who are really old now) to the netherlands to be a whitness because they saw their parents get murdered by the dutch military, the children recieved money, which is nowhere near enough for the traumas they got from the dutch military! but atleast they got recognition..

    • @kilanspeaks
      @kilanspeaks 3 месяца назад +1

      @Vincent.Vega_00 Lol, let’s not compare British puppet colonies to Indonesia, which fought a bloody war against the Dutch, the Allied Forces, and the British Indian army to defend our independence. Indonesia and the Netherlands now stand as equal, sovereign nations, and while fostering friendship is crucial, history shouldn’t be glossed over. The Dutch still have a responsibility to acknowledge their brutal past, continue repatriating stolen treasures, and own up to the countless massacres they committed while clinging to their largest colony. Some things shouldn’t be whitewashed for the sake of convenience.

    • @kilanspeaks
      @kilanspeaks 3 месяца назад +1

      @Vincent.Vega_00 What the King of the Netherlands apologized for was a single massacre in a single village, Rawagede, that took place when the Dutch attempted to reclaim Indonesia as a colony after we declared independence. This apology only came after relentless, sustained legal efforts on Indonesia’s part. Yes, credit to the Netherlands for finally acknowledging this isolated incident, but they continue to deny many other atrocities committed during the colonial period, citing a convenient “lack of evidence.”
      History may be in the past, but such suffering shouldn’t be ignored or minimized. And if you’re going to bring up Timor-Leste, then yes, as an Indonesian, I feel regret and guilt. I’m not only willing but ready to express that regret personally to every East Timorese I meet. While Indonesia and Timor-Leste now cooperate as friendly neighbors, the scars remain, and I firmly support the East Timorese government’s right to urge ours to formally recognize these painful chapters of history.
      Unlike certain cowardly racists in the West who dodge accountability, I am neither ashamed nor afraid to admit where we’ve gone wrong and to do better.

      @@deuscaritasest1278 it is a very costly open war after all the dutch and the briitish had the technological, industrial and economic advantage compared to a "backwater" country called Indonesia. They have to resort to a scorched earth tactics in Surabaya, Bandung and many other places, doing guerilla hit-and-run tactics in many regions. The Indonesian military/resistance even coalesced into one big force and did something similar to Tet offensive (on a smaller scale cause the Indonesians don't have any backing unlike the Vietnamese so we don't have as many weapons and ammunitions), doing an all out offensive on the city of Yogyakarta which was full of international delegations at the time of the offensive. Added with huge diplomatic efforts by Indonesian delegations abroad we were able to garner support internationally and win using diplomatic efforts.
      This offensive is done to send the message to the international community that indonesian resistance still exist and will keep on fighting even while on a disadvantageous position. Many of the guerilla warfare in Vietnam is inspired from the Indonesian fight of independence and they learned from a military tactic book made by one of our general (Sudirman). The Vietnamese is even more adept on guerilla warfare and improved upon the tactics that were used by the Indonesians and made guerilla warfare famous by beating the US (albeit with communist industrial backing providing them weapons, but then again their opponent is the US, the biggest military power after WW2).

    A good explanation video, although short, but at least it describes a little of the many sufferings that our grandparents experienced during the colonial period and the struggle for independence.
    Today, August 17 2024, marks our 79th independence day. Even though we have not yet achieved our country's ideals, but today is beter than before, and we are confident in our future, because we believe in the generations to come.
    Indonesia, which before independence was a poor country even though it had abundant natural resources, has now become a developing country that is greater than in previous eras.
    We have become the 13th most powerful military country in the world, and the Netherlands is now in 40th place.
    We are very serious about loving our country and very serious about protecting our beloved country. If anyone dares to mess with Indonesian sovereignty, Indonesian soldiers are ready to die fighting on the front lines for Indonesia, and if the Indonesian people are needed to join in the fight, we are willing to die defending Indonesia.
    Our grandparents still clearly remember their wounds from the past. Even though the Dutch have apologized to Indonesia, this apology will never be enough until the Dutch actually pay back all the losses they have caused, because their apology is only a formality. We Indonesians do not feel that sincerity.

      The history between Indonesia and the Netherlands is complex and deeply intertwined. While colonialism was undeniably wrong and had profound impacts, it's important to acknowledge that the world was very different in those times. Indonesia, as we know it today, was not yet a unified country, and there were conflicts among local kingdoms even before colonization. Today, Indonesia faces its own challenges, such as modern slavery, which deserves our attention and action. Addressing these issues is crucial for moving forward and building a better future.

    Interesting video. A few notes:
    - the Dutch ruled over many parts via Indonesian rulers (regents) who were as corrupt, if not more corrupt than the Dutch themselves,
    - don't forget many Indonesians served in the Dutch colonial army (KNIL),
    - do notice that the Indonesian independence movements prior to 1941 posed no real threat to Dutch colonial rule. It weren't the Indonesians who overthrew it, but the Japanese.
    - it is likely that under 3,5 years Japanese rule more Indonesians died (forced labour, massacres) than under 3,5 century Dutch rule. That doesn't make the Dutch good, but it should be noted that Japanese rule was far more brutal.
    - On 9:39 there is a photo of the Bersiap (1945) where Indonesian youngsters went on a killing spree killing and burning down the homes of many Europeans and Chinese,
    - nowadays the Dutch do not widely glorify the atrocities of the past: it is often debated, also the statue of JP Coen.
    - as of today the Netherlands has made many apologies, by either king and/or government for its colonial past.

Estimates of the number of Indonesian deaths during the Japanese occupation vary, but some sources say that between 4 and 10 million Indonesians died as a result of military campaigns, forced labor, and food shortages caused by Japanese occupation. One “small” yet significant addition to this is the chapter of Javanese indentured laborers that were brought to Surinam. It was mentioned real quick near the end of this video but the majority of Dutch people have no clue about the relationship between the former Dutch Indies and Surinam. More and more Javanese from Surinam are finding out about their ancestors that they were either forced, tricked or kidnapped to move to Surinam. If you take in account the circumstances in Java during that era, anywhere else would seem an improvement. Unfortunately this “small” chapter is drowned out by the entirety of the colonial Dutch history. Hence the reason I’m sharing it here.
