  • Yes, it's another one of those "5 things I hate about my motorcycle" videos. But I have more than five...though several of them are really nitpicking.

    I bought a new 2023 Scram 5 days ago. I had the same issue of hunting for neutral. My clutch lever had about 1-1/2 inches of free play and the owners manual calls for 3mm which is about 1/4 inch. I adjusted the free play as described in the manual and now the bike is easy to find neutral. My bike was also stalling at slow or idle speeds. Some viewers said this is caused by the relays and recommended replacing the relays, but one viewer said to clean them instead. The factory uses too much waterproofing grease on the relays and it looks like white lithium grease. I think this is causing continuity issues. I removed the grease with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. I found 6 relays, 5 under the seat and one under the battery side panel. This fixed the stalling issue.

    A good, honest and detailed video. I liked the Scram from day one, surprising as I absolutely hated the looks of the Himalayan. I ride a 2020 Honda CB1100RS (I'm in the UK, I understand the RS wasn't exported to the US) which hibernates during the Winter months, I've toyed with the idea of a second bike to use on our rough country back roads while the Honda sleeps for some time. The opportunity arose recently when I saw some UK dealers were unloading Scrams with £1000 discount to make space for the new Himalayan 450s, with a Scram version soon to follow. Temptation got the better of me and ordered a 411 yesterday for delivery next week. I've wasted no time ordering a centre stand, rear luggage rack, crash bars and a first service oil, filter and gasket kit to carry out the first 300 mile service at home. That's what I love about these much misunderstood bikes. They're a simple, easily maintained, rugged, any weather Mule. Can't wait to receive mine.

    That is the best review on the RE Scram 411 I’ve watched, as far as giving very useful information to a potential buyer. Yes you didn’t ride or even start the bike, but there are plenty of other videos for that. This was as if you and I went for a ride and while having lunch you told me all about your bike. Very impressed!

    I have an identical neutral experience on the 350 Classic ("Reborn" as we're supposed to call the J-series). However, it has definitely got better with mileage, which is common consensus with this and pretty much every other RE issue. Shame they're abandoning the Scram, my motorcycle preferences are kind of niche and the 411 definitely fits the bill. Very tempted to get one before they become history.

    A great realistic review. I’ve had my Scram 411 for a few weeks and had similar thoughts. It suits the terrible British roads and it’s perfect for the UK’s rural green lanes. 😁 I’m loving it!

    Just got my 2024 Scram- 1st 100kms of open road and gravel farm roads- zero problems with finding neutral. Smooth shifting, excellent brakes, comfy seat. The Scram 411 is AWESOME!!

    Hi Mongrel, I’ve heard a couple of u tubers changing the manufacture of oil and the grade of oil it might help with false neutrals. Also I noticed your throttle cable outer sleeve moving when you tried to get your throttle to move, there is an adjustment on your handgrip to eliminate that slack. Best of luck with your bike…

    I enjoyed your video. I'm looking at one of these or the Hunter 350 in the spring, and appreciated your honest take on the bike. I think I'd enjoy the versatility of the Scram for dirt road riding.

    The metallic noise you're hearing is the "tappets", as Indians & Britons call them. In America, we refer to them as "valves".
    Royal Enfields are known for this sound. Some people like it; other people hate it. But the sound itself is totally normal for these bikes. And it's part of their unique character.
    Also, if you like flat bench seats, might you consider a Royal Enfield Interceptor?

    Good balanced review. I agree with most of your assessment, especially the seat which does pitch you forward. I also had trouble finding neutral for the first 200 miles or so, but since then it's been fine, so I guess the gearbox needed to bed in. Stock tyres are pretty good on and off road but they don't last long - my rear tyre has nearly worn out at 3500 miles. A nice after market silencer will give a better exhaust note (I went for Delkevic) and looks better than OEM. Like you, I have several bikes but I find the Scram is my 'go to' choice for a bit of back roads fun. It's a very satisfying, characterful ride.

    Hi MM, just watched your vid and I have several observations on your comments, based on my 2022 8000 kms Himi:
    1. The gearbox on my bike was a little difficult to go into neutral at first but now after roughly 5000 mls I have no further issues. In fact going up the box using clutchless changes she is as sweet as a nut;
    2. Engine - I thought that after maybe 1500 mls she was going to be fully run-in, but no. At 5000 mls she runs really sweet, eager to run at higher revs whilst still maintaining good torque between 3000 and 4500 rvs.Looking forward to seeing how she runs at 10, 12 20,000 kms !!
    3. Fuel consumption. Firstly let me say that I have NEVER had a bike so good on fuel ! She is very consistent at 2.8 ltrs per 100 kms, or if it helps about 105 mpg (UK gallon). Doesn't seem to matter how I ride her, it always comes out the same.
    4. General running costs - I buy my oil filters 5 at a time from India so they work out at roughly £3 apiece, engine oil replacement (buy 2 ltrs, use about 1.7 ltrs) costs 17€.
    5. Taking the tank off - buy yourself some long-handled long nose pliers for moving the fuel hose clamp.
    6. Engine noise - I'm assuming you refer to the "big end rattle noise" that she does under load ? I don't like it so I change the engine oil every 3-4000 kms (2-3000 mls) 'just in case'.
    Question? Has your bike gone back to the dealer for it's first service at 500 mls ? At this service the engine oil and filter should be changed and the tappets checked/adjusted.
    I absolutely love my Himi and she's going to get some presents very soon:
    TEC camshaft (apparently more power plus smoother running)
    16 tooth front sprocket - lowers revs to help with cruising speeds
    Different end can - I experimented with running my bike WITHOUT an end can and she sounded gorgeous but only held in place by head bolts is not a viable solution so I'll be getting an after market free-flowing can
    New back tyre - maybe I'm ragging her too much ...

    If you haven't already I hear the TEC cam for that engine is a banger. I just cammed my 350 Classic picking up 5.5 hp at the wheel and that doesn't even come close to describing the difference it made. These Euro 5-6 spec bikes are so incredibly asthmatic and lean you get them to start breathing and they really come alive. Cheers from Cali 🏖

    The white red color is fantastic. I really like the bike except for the exhaust on the original (that thickened part - is that the catalytic converter). I see you replaced both, the exhaust pipe and the exhaust pot. He really looks better now. I was wondering where you bought these accessories? Is homologation required for this modification? I'm also wondering if you've considered painting the exhaust pipe black, just like the engine. Is that possible?

    @Mongrel Motorsports just ran into your channel I like it very straight forward and honest Thnx. I also own this motorcycle same color scheme miles on my Scram 411 Thumper is 15,000 miles (street) 95 percent of the time yes I know why so many miles reason I bought my Scram in August 2022 when it launched in Mexico FYI the U.S. was the last Country to recieve and sell this Royal Enfield Model from India hence the miles on my Rig. This goes out to all owners of this motorcycle keep in mind I mostly use it on road and not dirt. For the price that is paid for this Rig I have no complaints. No center stand on my Rig becuase I own other Rigs (motorcycles) and do maintenance. I use a rear wheel stand for oil changes this to keep weight off the Rig (Scram) this motorcycle is cost effective meaning you are not paying a arm or a leg for maintenance and easy to work on if your familiar with tools. Oh one last thing @Mongrel Motorsports the whole finding neutral no problem on my Rig maybe just a one off thing just saying. And I truely take your word for the whole off road prowess THNX ENJOY.

    Puppy dog engine - love that, what a perfect description. Totally agree - great engine from the start in my opinion, but yes, every hundred miles it improves noticeably. I'm at 2500 miles now. It's a gem. That rattle worried me for a while, but now I don't notice it. Eager to fly as best it can, soft when you want to pootle along. Sure, a few more bhp would not be unwelcome and probably make it perfect...or, then again, maybe ruin its charm!
    Agree with ALL your other observations with just one comment - ridden a fair way on three 411s now and there's been no issue finding neutral on any, so your findings are based on your bike - maybe a faulty or dirty switch, cabling, or just 'that box'. I also have an INT650 and a DL650. The INT is butter smooth too (and, like the Scram, that engine/gearbox just gets better. Must be an RE 'thing'). Suzuki boxes are generally great, but the REs both find neutral better. In contrast I've had worse problems with my last bigger Honda and Kawasaki bikes.
    I'd happily travel a long distance on planned roads over (UK rider) non-dual carriageway roads, but then they're never fun anyway. Just need to be taking your time to enjoy the ride on the lesser single roads, and not pressed to arrive quickly!
    I LOVE my Scram.
    Also currently have an INT650 and DL650 - love them all, and no longer want anything bigger.

    Thank you for the pros and cons. Still debating how much off road I would really do, but I would like to start. Never been off road. And I cant afford two bikes and the scram seemed just the fight fit for as you said mostly roads, a few fire roads and you wouldn’t hate a quick jaunt on the highway. The new Triumph 400 Scrambler has just been announced but even if the price is right I feel the weight and seat height will be too much for my wee 5’7” 130lb frame.

      The new Triumphs do throw a wrinkle in. I have a Bonneville too, so they are interesting to me as well. I think they will be more pavement oriented, like the KTM 390 Adventure. Anything can do some off-pavement if it has the proper tires. That gets overlooked too often.

    I think the reason the seat is sculpted like that is to reduce the seat height but also because they need the tank to be higher up so that when you are standing up it is in the right position. The only way they could have gotten a flat seat would have been to lower the fender which may have removed your ability to put panniers with the need to have a higher up exhaust or to raise the seat height of the entire bike which would have made it less appealing for a lot of people.

    The rattle is probably the drive chain for the oil pump and the end float in the pump drive gear. You can shim up the end float in the gear and replace the pump drive chain. Should quieten it down a lot.👍

    Difficulty finding neutral would drive me crazy. I am used to my KTM 390 Duke's slick gearbox. As for the dodgy gear indicator...

    Good video. I'm circling a future purchase, and it's nice to have an honest list of the negatives. Other than the neutral thing, none of that would bother me. Is that a consistent problem with all Scrams, or just your one?

      There are some other comments that address this. It seems common, but I've mostly adapted to it with my shifting/riding style and it's not much of a problem now.

      I'm happy with the bike, but it's not perfect. These items are noted so other potential buyers can be aware of them as most are not things you may learn on a test ride.

      @@BikeWorkz1991 I share your frustration with most reviewers out there. I highly recommend Ian at Big Rock Moto's channel, though he's a bit more off-road oriented. Most reviewers are given bikes to review and want to keep the supply coming so often aren't critical. I share the experiences of actually owning mine.

    Same Problem with my Scram 411, i move down from 2 to 0, never from 1 to 0, indicator Problem is the same on my RE Interceptor 650. My Scram was pushed by a parking Car and it feld down on the steering. After that i installed the Main Stand from the Himalayan on the Scram, now i sleep better.

    Nice video! I love the Scram and am seriously considering one. There's an HD / RE dealer about 95 miles from me selling them for a good price. I really don't care to do my own maintenance, though. Am also considering a Triumph Speed or Scrambler 400 from a local dealer. Would you choose the Scram again if you had that choice?

      I have yet to see the new Triumphs. I'm sure they are nice though. I don't see them as being off-road capable as the Scram. They seem to compare more to the KTM 390. For a road-only bike they are probably superior due to the additional power. I think the Scram is better for my purposes, and the current price it is a better value. Also, there is reportedly a several month wait on the Triumph due to it's popularity at release. But the Triumph will probably retain it's value better over the long term. I'd want to ride both, and consider what kind of riding I'd mostly do.

    Never a good idea to sit at a stop light in neutral. Stay in first gear in case you have to get out of the way in a hurry.

      'Tis a habit from Bullet ownership. Holding the clutch on one of those will roast it in short order. You are not wrong, though.

      The regular Himalayan has a center stand.

      @@mongrelmotorsports The regular Himalayan has more ground clearance than the Scram. Another possible reason is because the Himalayan is likely to be loaded with luggage making them top heavy, enough to lean and topple over on a side stand.

    Great show!
    There is a video circulating on the internet of some guy snapping the forks clean right off the frame on the Hymalayan...few people chimed in by stating that the square frame tubing is not as strong as the round one.
    Do you think there is a reason to be concerned with this possible design flaw?

      Hi !
      That video concerns an Himalayan from 2018.
      Not one problem has come up with European Himalayan frames.
      I bought one of the last 411 ones available in Belgium.
      Am more than happy with it. Drive motorcycles since ´85 .

      That was a very old model, perhaps even the first model and that flaw has long been fixed. Yet people still keep bringing up some old video about it. There are no such issues with this bike.
      I have never heard of anyone having any such occurrence in countless videos that I have seen.
      There are durable and dependable bikes, designed for the harsh Indian roads.
      I'm looking forward to getting one or perhaps two of these awesome bikes!

    The himalayan and scram are both good bikes. However they are bikes that are always going to require wrenching especially if you ride them as they are intended. they are very hard to resell. But they are fun to ride and easy to work on if thats your thing.

    Edit: Just finished watching your review. Thank you for your insight. I'm surprised to hear the seat as a con, I hear that mentioned as a "big pro" in a lot of other Scram reviews! However I suppose you're right about seats being a preferential thing. Depends on your size, weight, seating position and more. You've given me a new perspective on a lot of things on the Scram, thank you for this.

    Less freeplay in clutch will fix the not finding nuetral problem, and always keep your sickle in gear at a stoplight.

      One of the first thing I was taught in MSF is get used to squeezing that clutch at a stop light. Never know when an idiot is looking at his cell phone instead of what's in front.

      I was just thinking the same thing. It is so rare to need neutral. I let it warm up in neutral but once underway I never need neutral.@@awe5543

    I don't think you are nitpicking at all just a honest review. I have a Himalayan. Everything you said in pretty bang on as what I felt. It is definitely not a bike for everyone.

      Truth. If I need service work I'll tow it 1.5 hrs vs taking it to the H-D place half the distance. Wholly unimpressed with the latter.

    I had a bike that was hard to find neutral. A quick blip of the throttle in first then shift would do the deed for me.

      This!! Also, it's typically not advised for safety reasons to have your bike in N during a stoplight. Keep in 1st with clutch in, with right foot in brake in order to accelerate quickly once light turns green.. lights in the US are slso never more than 1.5-2min...

    Have you tried going into neutral just before it comes to a stop i had a similar problem with mine going from first to second and back again a few times then finally snick into neutral and pull off a fist pump as the light went back to green, so just gently slip it into neutral whilst still moving very slowly till it became habit , after a couple of thousand miles it finds neutral easily but i still neutral it whilst moving out of habit so I think it may have been a quirk of running in as for the power you already have a nice tailpipe on it but i de cat’d mine and fitted an x lite fuel controller and its a totally different bike, and even sounds better by far, having done that first time i pulled away I nearly ended up in my neighbours front yard lol

      Yes, the key is to try for neutral before a full stop. In fact, the higher the speed the easier it seems to be.

      I dont recomend sitting in neutral at intersections. God forbid a car doesnt see you, your already in gear and can move out of the way. I always just hold my clutch in

      I tend to keep most vehicles a long time unless they are truly horrible. I'm really enjoying this one. Novelty of being new aside, it's the one I want to ride the most. I haven't ridden my Bonneville in months!

      ​@JW20236 I've had the Himalayan now for nearly 2 years and the points raised in this review are the same as mine. I think it's a great motorcycle for the money and much prefer it to everyone's favourite the Classic 350. If you go into ownership accepting that it's no road rocket and happy to bumble along the back roads taking in the scenery then it's perfect for that. It's also a very adaptable motorcycle with many aftermarket parts available from handlebar risers to full luggage systems. Due to the affordable cost a of this machine and its capabilities I take mine places I wouldn't take my other bike.

I am more than happy to pot around at sane speeds and enjoy the ride, I've had fast bikes before but here in the UK, successive governments are striving to lower the speed limits everywhere so no use in having anything borderline fast. Being affordable means I will not care too much if I damage it taking it adventurous places.

    So Ive put about 1500 miles on my Scram, and the only thing I've had an issue with is some minor alignment issues. Nothing major, but drifting to the right while cruising without hands.
    Minor annoyances with the Tripper, no tach, once had a false neutral, and would love some easy LED upgrades, but generally all good.
    After putting some miles on, and riding some other friends bikes, the gearbox is much better than i gave it credit for. I couldn't find neutral (going up or down) on my buddies Svart 401, and he has the same issue consistently.

      I'm still trying to understand what causes the scram to go right when you ride without hands. I love this bike, i think i will bring it to my mechanic to see if maybe it's the steering cone bearing or something like that. 7000km on it, i absolutely am in love with it.

      I thought it was alignment, but changing that doesn't do too much. I swapped out my silencer for a different slip on, and that kind of helped, but more on the weight.
      Mine also steers to the right without hands, I'd love to hear if you find anything!

    My scram has the same neutral problems. I got in the habit of slowly letting out when parking to try and avoid embarrassing myself by killing my bike. I don't have much hope for a solution to this if it's an issue on other bike's.
    This review is spot on as a someone with ~850 miles on mine. It's always my least favorite part of the drive but I've done Snoqualmie pass multiple times even with some wind and 70 is no problem. Also as someone who's only owned old shitty bikes before the breaks are just fine.

    Have to agree about the seat. Why it needs that damn great hump for the pillion is beyond me. Especially at my age, getting your leg over it comfortably is not funny. Otherwise a great machine.

    Hi , i have a Scram and a Himalayan (and an interceptor) , and prefer the scram as its nicer at turning due to the different wheel size , I think for value for money , do it all basic riding , not to expensive to mend if you drop it , excellent fuel economy , cheap insurance Royal Enfield nailed it , funny to see Triumph trying to muscle in , there to late to the party yes the engines noisey , a bit flat , but at 30 mph around most roads where i live its perfect , agile , and very easy to live with ( havent ridden my Rocket 3GT once this year ).

    New owner of 2023 Scram 411. I hate that the engine sounds like it is coming apart over 60MPH. I have riden for over 500 miles and scared to exceed 60MPH.

    Not had Fake Neutral but False ones yes, and the hard to find neutral YES! Otherwise I absolutely love the bike anyways
    Measure these bike in smiles not 0-60
    Stupid wide linear torque curve is smooth but not gonna jump out from under ya
    I wanted a window so I got a regular HIMI

    Why use a gps what rubbish my bro and I toured lots in the sixties never got really lost, but then we used our grey matter. That seems to have disappeared nowadays

      ease of use. Use a map if you want you. No ones forcing you to use satnav

    The white red color is fantastic. I really like the bike except for the exhaust on the original (that thickened part - is that the catalytic converter). I see you replaced both, the exhaust pipe and the exhaust pot. He really looks better now. I was wondering where you bought these accessories? Is homologation required for this modification? I'm also wondering if you've considered painting the exhaust pipe black, just like the engine. Is that possible?

      That's a Delkevic system. It came on my bike when I bought it (used) but they are readily available. It's highly polished, so wouldn't be the easiest to get paint to stick to. I prefer a little shiny bling anyway.
