I ended up linking a 30 gallon compressor to an older 20 gallon used compressor I got cheap to get me some extra cfm when needed. Both are connected to a tee with check valves then the main hose connects to a 2 step filter. The 20 gallon alone can easily handle bumper covers and repairs with my W400. Might not be the most sophisticated set-up, but it's working for me. The other guns I use are an ANI F160 and a Master Pro series 22 1.2 for jambs/small jobs/engine bay ect. Flg 5 is a gun I would like to try, but really don't NEED it...but sometimes that doesnt stop me😆
Been looking for a vid like this to understand limitations on a small capacity compressor - thanks - very useful. Clear and understandable for a beginner like me!
YOU CALL THAT COMPRESSOR SMALL! All I have is a little "Pancake" that I have used successfully with my nail guns and to occasionally fill my tires. I just purchased the SPRAY-IT two gun combo kit. I GUESS I AM IN REAL TROUBLE NOW! Thanks for the video.
@@swc-diygarage Since I last wrote, I have learned a thing or two about compressors and spray gun compatibility. I month ago I didn't know that my 0.8hp Bostitch, six gallon, louder than a marching band pancake compressor was rated at only 2.6 cfm, perfect for my air nailers but not enough air volume for my new LVLP spray guns. YESTERDAY, after a lot of looking and with some newly acquired knowledge, I bit the bullet and purchased a 2hp, 10 gallon, 6.4 max cfm, ultra quiet, twin piston, 7Amp draw, fills in less than two minutes air compressor by California Air Tools. $361.00 out the door with my 10% military discount. I’ve painted mid sized cars with both my 25-21 and 60 gal. No diff. Just when using small one get a good and I mean good water trap. Everytime it turned on I would get to finish the edge and stop. Once it shut off pickup again. People say u can’t stop. I think that’s a lie. U could almost use a mini gun and a pancake to Do one. Just have to stop all The time 😂. Actually imo get as big as you can. 60 gal is perfect but I get you need a dedicated Circuit. So …maybe 30-40 gal I would With 110
Awesome info man and perfect timing! I ordered the Bellaria yesterday and have been wondering how well my small compressor will keep up with it. Should be good with my auxiliary tank and for doing small stuff like I usually do.
That's funny. Those are the two guns I've been considering. I currently have a 21gal compressor, and was considering the SP33000 to do things like my firewall and jambs, etc. now. But I plan to upgrade to a full size compressor next year before I do the whole paint job on my project truck. I don't think I've seen any bad reviews on either gun. Thanks!
nice video and door turned out nice, but I'm surprised that the base gun turned on sooner yet finished with more air in the tank whereas the clear gun turned on later but finished with tank more empty.
A lot of us DIYers don't have the space for a 60 gallon compressor and a dedicated 240v circuit to plug it into. Would a 40 gallon compressor rated for continuous duty on 120v 20 amp circuit perform similar to the larger compressor?
Probably would deliver a significant amount of air. Only problem would be it would be producing a lot of hot moist air running continuously. That being said one would need a real good air dryer system.
I brought this gun up in one of your other vids but the iwata w101 copy on eBay is very air efficient. It’s bigger than a mini but smaller than a full size. Ive fell in love with this little gun. Also your intro sounds a lot like copperhead road. Lol
Glad your enjoying the w101. A lot of spray guns sold from China are fakes, but it seems the ones from Japan are real but I still find it questionable. Funny how the intro sounds familiar or is it me on the pipes. LOL.
I've got a air compressor. I am finding it hard to find a good spray gun. My budget is 500-600 GBP, I just will be doing single panels & bumpers not a whole car or anything like that. Compressor specs: 250L/MIN 2HP 8.1 cfm (displacement) 50L tank / 11 gallons. could you recommend me something?
To be honest I don't know of a gun that would be suitable for that small of compressor. I would spend a little money upgrading to a 20 gal 5hp first. It would at least get you into the LVLP gun class.
Great info... question for ya... just getting set up with a few things in garage. Got new 29 gal comp. 6.8@40 5.1@90. Also got 2 guns. base gun says avg air consumption is 4.3scfm, and operating press of 40psi (assuming this is max). Other gun for clear is black widow hte compliant gun. Not sure what it requires. Are you opening the air compressor regulator to full open (200psi on mine) Then adjusting at intermediate regulator for what gun needs? Will messing with these settings change when the compressor kicks on? Thanks
Maximum Air Pressure 115 PSI Air Tank Capacity 21 Gallons Air Flow Capacity 4.9 SCFM at 90 PSI 7 SCFM at 40 PSI.. I was thinking of getting SPRAYIT SP-33500K LVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun Kit to paint my truck. Just wondering if this will get the job done and do you have any other recommendations for my set up.
The rating of HP is the compressor itself. Not the electric motor. To get 5 hp the little piston in the compressor is being driven at 3450 rpm by the electric motor.
@@swc-diygarage I have come to understand that noise levels and compressor longevity are proportionate to RPM's. The twin cylinder compressors are half as loud because they run at half the RPM's as comparable to single cylinder models.
Thank you for the video. Your videos have been very informative. I'm just curious why you didn't use the ANI 160 gun. I was under the impression it's a very efficient gun. I'm looking at purchasing the ANI 160 since it's on sale at P-Auto and looking to get your thoughts. Thanks.
The ANI F160 is an excellent gun for the money and $115 on sale is a smoking deal. I chose the sp3300 because I know from experience that the compressor could keep up with out any issues. FLG5 over the F160 because it exceeds the compressors capability and that's the situation a lot of DIYers get into. Now the F160 is quite efficient but would be right at the maximum ability so I believe I would have ended up in this same position. You do not want to be running at the max. Thanks for watching and supporting a fellow Canadian.
Great channel! Have you ever sprayed something heavy like Feather Fill G2 with a LVLP? I'm thinking of getting the R500 variation of the SprayIt along with a bigger 1.8 tip (sold at summit). Wondering your thoughts on thicker fluids with LVLP. Thanks man!
What a great comment and thanks so much for your support. Unfortunately I have never used Feather Fill to known just how thick of material is. A 1.8 tip definitely a sounds like a good choice since the product is a type of primer.. The only difference I have ever found between a LVLP gun and any other is a smaller fan and they spray slower but still have the ability to do a good job of atomizing, that being said it should work.
Hello, thank you for this video. I just got a summit racing lvlp spray gun that i read is a sprayit 33000 clone, looks the same and also has that R500 on the side. Will be using a 20 gallon Husky quiet compressor. How many oz of paint did it take to cover that door with 2 coats, also how much clear was used? I'm about to order 3m pps 2.0 cups but cant decide what size to get.
Great video SW, thanks for sharing. I was wondering if all you used to for a water filter was the little one that you had on the gun? For a compressor this size and in dry climate (Calgary) would this be enough? (Hoping the answer is yes!)
I actually do run and recommend a air filter and dryer about 25 feet from a compressor. I put mine on a stand so it's portable. (On sale at princess auto this week $69) The one on the gun is just for good measure.
My 29 gallon compressor is better at 90 PSI (5.9) and just slightly less than your rating at 40 PSI (7.3). Definitely no relation between those values.. or from one compressor to another.
thx. I was watching a video on a HF compressor... the guy ran the purple gun empty for 10 minutes, and the compressor never caught up. I have an older Champion (Porta Champ) 20gallon V pump compressor... Mine was able to run the gun at 35psi... My compressor is set to be full charge at 125psi, - the gun pulled air for 60 seconds before the compressor kicked on, and then the compressor would run for about 90 seconds and build pressure back up to 125psi, while the trigger was still pulled, and then the tank would power the gun for another 60 seconds before the motor kicked back on. Do you think this is a good test to see if a compressor will keep up with the spray gun? Hello from Canada!
That is an excellent test of your air supply but no doubt it will run the whole time if you plan to do the entire car at once. A good water trap properly installed will be necessary.
Most setup their compressor wrong. Set the gun regulator to wide open, then set the compressor tank output regulator just a little over what you need at the to spray properly. Use the gun regulator for minor adjustments. This will keep the gun regulator from choking the air too much and avoid major fluctuations from closed to wide open trigger. Your system CFM will be maximized with putting much strain on the compressor head
I think that our definitions of a "small compressor" are vastly different than his definition of a small compressor. For me, 5hp and 20 gallons is not small (performance wise). My Bostitch pancake compressor is small and definitely too small for spray painting much of anything bigger than a bread box.
Its not all about pressure. Its also about the gun body letting the correct amount of CFM through. A good example of that is my video Iwata-sprayit parts swap.
