Hi Brian, I have a challenge for you? Perhaps you can't or don't think it's worthwhile. No Problem, I'm not going anywhere. Here is my idea. I would like to see you paint an entire car with a small air compressor say a 21 gallon with the R500. No $1000 air dryer or 200 gal air compressor. A basic DIYer paint job using a mid level cost paint. I think a lot of subscribers would enjoy that. What do you think? Thanks!
That would be breath of fresh air.. I get that guns make a difference but ignoring the fact that he’s spraying with an endless air supply is just disingenuous. He could probably spray a cargo van with a cheap gun from Home Depot with the air from the shop behind it.
You could spray all day long with this gun, as long as your 20gal compressor can produce 4CFM of air. I have a $50 DIY filter/dryer on mine. Produces a gorgeous finish.
Nice Job, I’ve been spraying since 1982. Retired two years ago as a Tech Rep from one of the big three. I agree with everything you said and done. Faster, greater overlap in cooler conditions produces a flawless finish. I’ve always said it’s in the wrist, I’ve sprayed and received great results with cheap guns plenty of times. Don’t get me wrong, the more expensive guns are a pleasure to use for a number of reasons, such as balance, comfort, easy to keep clean etc. Ohh, use the slower Reducer/Activator you can to allow the finish to breath for the best performance, weather it’s the primer, base, or clear. Good luck guys!
Nice video. I get that showing the spray gun in action is important, but it would've been extra nice to get some information on it. The title says paint with "a small compressor" but the requirements are never mentioned, no recommendations were given for compressor specs, it wasn't shown working with a small compressor, and the air consumption of the gun wasn't even stated. A "small" compressor is vague, especially when it's compared the the massive compressors like in the professional spray shops where the video was filmed. One persons' small is a 3 gallon, another persons' small is a 30 gallon.
I've found that often times cheaper spray guns can force you to be a better more versatile painter because they force you to adjust your technique to get the most out of the gun, the big advantage to an LVLP gun is it works well with a smaller compressor and has very little over spray which helps to get a cleaner paint job, with smaller compressors you will need to spray a little slower than you were in this video but you can get some great results with this gun, Brian, you made a very important comment about paint quality, a good quality paint system will always give you far better results and will last much longer than cheap paint and using a manufacturer's complete system has always yielded me better results.
I have 2 Aeropro LVLP R100 1.2 tip spray guns. The smaller brother of R500. Use this with 50 liter, 13 gallon compressor. I've never had such a smooth result, just great. I use this for spot repairs, bumper, 1 panel or 4 rims. Ideal for amateurs without a spray booth or small work. Fan 12-15 cm, very little spray mist. I paid 21 euros/23 dollars. per part.
prep and masking is the part I like the least. I've been using HVLP paint guns with a 10 gallon compressor... seems to work but now you've got me wanting to try a LVLP to see if I can get even better results
Just like a great photographer can take fabulous photos with a disposable camera and a rotten photographer can make rotten photos with a $3500 Hasselblad camera.
I love the A610 - has the non-stick coating that cleans up nice. Could paint an entire car non-stop with this gun with a 20 gallon compressor with at least 4CFM in the garage. It makes someone with almost no experience (me) look like I know what I'm doing, using Tamco products. Clears like glass.
Thats the new design R500, Its nice but returned it because the trigger wasn't smooth like the older R500. When I took it apart, the trigger has a plastic bushing making it kinda gritty. The older design uses a oring which was smoother. They share the same needle sets though.
Brian i have learned so much watching and listening to you. I've painted a number of cars in my shop including a couple race cars. I'm older now but i think i have a couple more in me. And I feel so much more confident now. Thanks, and have a wonderful holiday with your family!
It’s a great little gun for the diy. What I like the least is masking, newer cars getting more and more weird shapes on the bumpers. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Your comment about the paint gun seals @10:20 really hit the nail on the head namely "...the longevity might not be the best...don't leave it in thinners!" is a polite way of saying it's got second rate parts/seals to it (which surely surprises almost no one these days). I bought some large spray bottles specifically because the product description claimed to be "solvent resistant" and left one half filled with auto wheel cleaner (the kind that smells like weak pool acid). A week later and the thing doesn't spray now. Lesson learned, now when I'm done cleaning wheels, I dump the wheel cleaner back in the container and spray water through it...spray bottles are cheap, but not that cheap -
Hey Brian. You surprised me by bringing another video to us before the holidays. Very well done. There’s a lot of folks out there that don’t have deep pockets for expensive spray equipment. You nailed it with this gun. Enjoy the holiday weekend with your awesome family.
I bought this gun from Aeropro with 5 different needles and caps ranging from a 1.2 to a 2.0, I am really looking forward to painting my project car when it warms up with it.
I wish I had purchased that combo...didn't see it before mine was delivered. One thing, if you are using pps cups, order the pps adapter with the female threads to go on the gun as opposed to pulling the cup adapter out of the gun. I did that and it is a goofy fine thread with a bunch of thread sealant that made a total mess inside the gun...plus I couldn't find an adapter with 1mm male threads. Good luck!@@greggherod2153
Thank you for doing this review.I have had a few different guns in my home garage that I have not had too good results with. I bought this gun and have had really good results with it.I also appreciate your other videos.
Thank you Sir for this very informative video. I admire your hands-on approach in your teaching. I am a novice and I am planning to buy a compressor for diy usage. Your teaching is very encouraging. God bless you
Great video. I've recently picked up an HTE gun for clear, but wasn't terribly happy with it. I may look at this as an option too. As a home-garage guy, I will sometimes get pulled away at a moments notice to play Dad, and more than once have not been able to fully clean a gun out.. so.. Going thru cheap guns is better than the expensive ones for me.
Looks great Brian ! I started out with a Binks 59 n moved up to a Devillbiss FLG 4, I think those cheap P-guns helped to make me a better painter. Learned a lot from watching you n some other well known painters on you tube. I now have a Iwata LS400 1.4 tip but the cheap guns taught me a lot !!
Great advice at 11:00 about sharp body lines and not overdoing it on the clear. Thanks again for your genuine passion and knowledge you pass on so well. My man Brian!
They give nice finishes but make you work a little harder than other budget guns. They use more like 7-8cfm not under 5. I like em because they're bullet proof. They resemble Iwata W-400's. No seals to wear out on the nozzle. Basic o ring internals. Ive used a Bellaria cap on mine. Works just like the original if you wanna put a $110 cap on a $60 gun😂 Good gun for a beginner. Ive since moved on to Iwatas and they make my work easier and Im able to get better results with less work. Cheers👍
Came out nice. If it’s Sikkens clear then that’s why it came out so nice. It’s very forgiving. I’ve used it regularly with some cheap spray guns with good results for the last 10 years. You should do a test spraying metallic base coat with a cheap paint gun versus a DV-1.
I think the thing i hate the more is taping. I get too much OCD and a job that should take 10 mins become a: 1hrs cavalcade of redoing everything 3 time because the last time was not good enough.
I paint fleet and what works for me is to use the regulator as a balance just let it rest on my wrist and helps keep the gun straight for long periods of time
Thanks for showing different guns than the pros use. I have a Fuji 5 stage turbine system. I have only done small parts like transmission and engine. The overspray is very small and I don't have a booth. Have you used these? Maybe a demo video. Thank you for your time.
this is just for fun, but i painted my granada ford with a roller, (1981)and guesss what? it was shite. i just wish yoututbe was about then, and i could have this great adivice, keep it going young man, so many people appreciate your videos.:)
Love the knowledge you share but I would love to see a video on prep of the area you are spraying in if you are spraying at home in a home garage to keep bugs and dust to a minimum! I am going to be spraying some parts at home in my basement and I’ve put it off out of not knowing the best, easiest, and smartest way to keep dust nibs down! Wet the floor? Create a small plastic panel diy booth? How to keep overspray down since I’d be spraying in a basement or garage? I do work at a dealership, unfortunately we don’t have a body shop, but I can use the large garage if I need to when we are closes on Sundays….but again I’d be worried about overspray, our techs have VERY expensive boxes and tools that I don’t want overspray settling on! So I’d love to see a video on prepping your diy area if spraying at home!
Painting and teaching are definitely talents, another killer video!💪 thanks again for all the tips and info Brian, wishing you and you're familia a Merry Christmas from South Texas!!
Just used this to paint my very first car gotta say you're right about the material ran it with sum cheap clear and my experience being entry got alot of orange peel but I feel like it was also me gonna have to do alot of polishing now but hopefully I'll get the hang of it been watching you're videos and got inspired to take on the job learned so much now time for mastering the craft and putting those teachings to the test thanks for all your hard work 😂
Highly recommend better clear. I started out using cheap upol clear. Runs easy and needs more skill to lay down. I stll use it for my own cars because its cheap. When I spray for others and they supply quality clear, it lays down easier and flows out flat. I can lay it down thicker and Ive had good luck not getting runs. A tip for flat clear, use a little reducer(5-10%). It sprays on smoother with less peel. Just not too much or else it will not go on thick enough and if you use too much it will reduce the shine. Use the right temp activator and reducer. Those r500's like more pressure for clear. For full fluid, 33-35 psi
Right sir, i love your content, you're honest and easy to listen to. Can you give a list of gun, compressor etc for anyone to do a good job? Only thing missing is the skill which will come. Is the a booth/extraction calculator? Temperature recommended etc?
Hi Brian, I have always disliked masking especially when wearing gloves, but I don't want to take a chance with finger prints. I try to prevent any problems, I try to anyway. I don't like color sanding either but I'm not that good of a painter, but your tips on laying on the clear flat worked wonders for me. Like I said before,You have helped me do a much better job! Thanks Brian.👍👍👍
I've been waiting for you to review a R500 paint gun! I bought the InoKraft D1 R500 kit on Cyber Monday for $82 (normally $110). I want to learn how to paint and I don't want to spend a fortune right now.
Great video man, I'm in to painting now and I want to start on home garage! My dad used to paint but he passed away 15 years ago never had some to teach and your videos are very helpful thanks for your time and quality of work! Merry Christmas and happy new years my friend🎉👏
I was waiting for your review on this, I purchased this exact gun and wanted to see what you thinked/gave tips on with it. Thanks for sharing your expertise on this.
Great video, thanks for showcasing this underappreciated gun. Get it with multiple tips/needles, the adapter and disposable cups and it's all the home car guy needs. I'm a crappy painter and this gun makes me look like I'm a better painter than I am, which isn't easy to do. lol
"I don't got that much talent." 7:25 Haha... that's funny. Everyone who watches you would disagree unless they are big ego professional painters. As you stated early on it doesn't make sense to spray with a cheaper gun, but don't go too cheap. I have taken 2 refinishing classes at a local community college. I bought a $200 DeVilbiss FLG4, which is okay but I still struggle with it. Stripey / mottled base and inconsistent clear with some dry areas and runs or sags on every panel. Your experience, talent, and eye see and correct things in process that less experienced or talented people do not see until after the coat is done. If I had your talent, I could make the FLG4 spray great results. I invested in expensive guns for clear only and base only and my results improved significantly. They did not make me a better painter, they just helped bridge the gap of my skill by putting down better spray patterns. I am still far from perfect and need much more practice, but having better atomization and a better fan helped my lower skill level. Striped or mottled base is no longer an issue and I hardly run clear, but it still happens here and there in smaller areas. I made the investment, because I have several projects in the garage so I could justify the expense and paint is expensive so having to redo a job due to my low skill and a cheap gun adds up fast so it was worth it to me.
Eastwood LT100, Summit Racing LVLP, Sprayit 33000, these are all the same R500. There is a newer design R500 but it uses a plastic bushing for the trigger, the older uses oring which is smoother. They all share the same needle sets. Works well with a 20 gallon, but i modified mine with a power steering cooler after cooler and a high flow regulator.
I am not a fan of polishing either, but as I do not have a good booth to work in, it is something I must do. Problem is, you then need to do the whole car because the original paint does not gloss to match what I have painted. I have one of these guns but only use it for base. I like my FLG5 for clearing.
hey bro, do you have or can you do a video with a tutorial on how to prepare, apply and paint rock guard on a car panel? I have a 99 Miata that I am painting the entire car this spring and the front quarter panels, and the doors have a rock guard coating under the paint about 1/3rd the way up on the panels. Do i need to take that down to the bare metal to reapply it? I haven't found any information yet on YT on how to do it. I already bought the product and the special gun to apply it just need the knowledge. Thanks for any assistance you can offer. And thanks for all of your videos, it has helped me so much in prepping for this project.
I think you could blow paint thru a soda straw in a dust storm and make it look killer! Nice! but used to seeing you do Acuras. I dont paint often but when I do I still use a old siphon feed Binks. Works for me. I hate masking and blocking!
I bought that gun and the pps 2.0 to clear my headlights, ended using the Eastwood 2k clear rattle cans(not very pleased with the outcome). Dried slightly cloudy. I’m going to sand it off and try the gun soon.
Hey Brian thanks for the vid.......I also have a smallish 90 litre (think that's about 20gal) compressor and did have an HVLP but struggled to do the roof and hood without getting tiger stripes, after showing the video of it to people on your fb page the general consensus was that the fan was too small and someone recommended getting a devilbis flg5 since although not hvlp the cfm required (10.5) isnt too high compared to most lvlp guns so should work find with my compressor, and yeah it is so much better! However, I did get water finding it's way through despite a water trap/regulator at the compressor end. I was then told to use another inline water trap at the gun end, but have found that having both a water trap at the compressor and another by the gun drops the pressure so much that I have to turn up the regulator at the compressor to 90-100psi, to have a chance of still receiving 25psi at the gun. I noticed in this setup you don't have a water trap at the gun though, so how do you prevent water getting through from any condensation in the hose etc?
I might get that to do side work. My work supplies my hvlp sata 5500 but personally all I own is a sata nr95 but it’s 15cfm and I have a small compressor.
Hey Brian, first of all thanks for all your videos. I’m working on my project classic subaru and your videos have helped me a lot! Yesterday I painted my gas door as a test and I had a mirror finish without having to wet sand, I will obviously buff it lightly once the entire car will be done. I wanted to ask if you could do a review and test of the Chinese copy Devilbless GTI pro with the T110 cap, mine is gold in color. I personally use it as my only gun for sealer, base and clear as I purchased it with a 1.3mm and 1.8mm tip. It’s around 70$ (90$ with both tips) and for me as a hobbyist was at the right prive point. It would be nice to have a pro test it out and give us some tips on it as you will probably know better how tune it in. I have been using it for a year for epoxy base layers and callipers and there are no major issues with it, a part from a small paint leak with the 1.3mm nozzle from the pin seal close to the handle if left with paint or thinner for for 5 to 10 minutes.
I’m an auto body man my opinion all these nice guns are nice to have and they do a good job but the best gun is the cheap purple gun from Harbor freight lays down clear no runs no drips basecoat pearl whatever you need to do and it’s cheap but that’s just my opinion
Lol on the expensive gun comment very true.. its all about the motion.. I do love a FRESH Sata anything in the last 10-15 years 4000 model's and up.. now since you are alittle more current what is the best combo (1.3-1.5) under $150 or seperate guns under $100 in your opinion??
I paid $98.86 cdn for this gun with 4 tips. 1.3, 1.5, 1.7 and 2mm. I haven't painted in years but i want to paint my own project truck. This paint gun only needs to survive one paint job so its a deal to me.
What was your small compressor and what PSI? I'm already sold on the A610 but want to know what compressor specs to buy. I paint guitars not cars. The last vehicles painted were officers jeeps in Vietnam.
I'd like your opinion. Which cheep budget gun would you recommend that has a wide spray and has a good balance. And also most guys I know spray P P G. Some of the RUclipsrs I follow spray Sikens. What are some of the other brands you would recommend for a beginner to start with. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
Hi I really have learned so much from you since I started watching your videos. I’m in the market of getting a LVLP gun since my 60gallon Ford and I only have a 30 gallon and I definitely want to get this gun. I also would like to know which adapter your using and paint cup setup since I don’t like using the big plastic cup since it takes a bit to clean. Thanks
I'd like to see how good of a job you could do with that gun and single stage urethane paint? I've got a Jeep Comanche that I'm restoring that I plan to paint myself (I had my autobody tech course in the past) and it won't be a showroom queen; I plan on driving and offroading it. So, I want to spend as little as possible, as I'll probably have to respray panels down the line after some trail runs!
@JFabrication yeah it's been flawless and it's holding up well. I think I'll pick up a second one since I'm doing both base and clear with the same gun. I've been using my $5 harbor freight purple I got several years ago to shoot primer and it's not as pleasant lol
@@hotelprius4612damn good to hear i just got a dud. Primer is mostly what i wanted it for, and sealer. Im using lph400 and ws400 iwatas for base/clear happily for many years now. Im gunna get an R500 now with a couple needles to try and see if i have good luck.
Subaru bumpers are a real pain I agree. But wet sanding and polishing is the bane of my existence lol. As I'm waiting right now at one of my dealerships to wet sand a whole door.
Hi Brian, I love this videos. I followed your instructions and paint came up great, but I went ahead to cut and buff 2 weeks after following your instructions from other video and the paint lost it’s shine, it feels very soft and flat to the touch, but is not shining as before. Do you think maybe I should have used the 1000grid a bit harder?
U said if we use cheap paint results no good. What brand paint & clear do u recommend for this gun? Something that won’t break the bank the most economical
That is an R500. The R500 is sold under a lot of different brand names, in different colors, with different accessories and pricing, but they're still an R500.
Let's try it here (on a customer's car) and if it works good then take it to the garage 😅 this had me LMAO Always a great review of a spray gun. Thank you for another option for us in our home garage
Yea the shop air is water better then at home compressor air so lets see the gun at its best first before I try and recommend it at home. Lets see its potential first.
The tool doesn't care, it cannot. The hand using the tool is what matters most, the type of tool is secondary. I've been using the same paint guns for like 20 years with consistent results no matter the brand of paint. i've used to lowest quality to the 1000$ plus guns and the one thing i learned is this: spray with the highest pressure the paint gun will allow, and open the fan all the way and adjust it down slightly. higher air pressure will elimate orange peel AND runs.
Have you ever done a video about protecting your lungs while painting cars? My cousin painted cars for years and unfortunately, he never wore a respirator and now has severe brain damage. He's 60 years old and he can no longer live on his own.
Hi Brian, I have a challenge for you? Perhaps you can't or don't think it's worthwhile. No Problem, I'm not going anywhere. Here is my idea. not really. Even the best painter has trouble when the gun is dripping and has a bent sticky needle right out of the box, e.g. A purple HF gun.

Thank you for your time.
he has a couple videos that he paints in his old garage with the fuji turbine
Thank you.

this is just for fun, but i painted my granada ford with a roller, (1981)and guesss what? it was shite. i just wish yoututbe was about then, and i could have this great adivice, keep it going young man, so many people appreciate your videos.:)
Merry Christmas!!!
Agree with you excellent teacher❤.All blessings to Brian and all the followers.🎉🎉from Cape Town. S.A🇿🇦
Thank you Brian!
I wish you were my high school shop teacher!!
You are an extremely talented man!
Just used this to paint my very first car gotta say you're right about the material ran it with sum cheap clear and my experience being entry got alot of orange peel but I feel like it was also me gonna have to do alot of polishing now but hopefully I'll get the hang of it been watching you're videos and got inspired to take on the job learned so much now time for mastering the craft and putting those teachings to the test thanks for all your hard work 😂
I did the roof of my car, and my daughter said it has so much orange peel I could make a cake😂😂😂😂😂
I find myself holding my breath when you're spraying in the booth!
Good info on the Aeropro spray gun. Will it work as well with the base coat as with the clear coat? I need to get one right away.
Thanks Brian!!
I'm glad I got my R500, and I can't wait to try it out thank you for another awesome video👍
Great Job Teacher .
Great video, thanks for showcasing this underappreciated gun. Get it with multiple tips/needles, the adapter and disposable cups and it's all the home car guy needs. I'm a crappy painter and this gun makes me look like I'm a better painter than I am, which isn't easy to do. lol
Can you let me know why one should get multiple tips? I’m thinking of getting this gun to do my first paint job
A really good test to it is hook up to a 20 something gallon tank and see what you can get done when the tank is full.
hey bro, do you have or can you do a video with a tutorial on how to prepare, apply and paint rock guard on a car panel?
Those eastwood cans work great but you cant over apply clear or it will haze
Can you use that gun with a pancake compressor that’s 6 gallon, 175PSI , 3.0SCFM, ..95 running HP?
Nice! Looks great!
How well would it do on a single stage paint?
You are a good painter and a great teacher
Great! Is there a photo of the finished car anywhere?
I’d like to see you paint an entire 18wheeler with a squirt bottle!
Another great video Brian Christmas greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Astro euro blue 1.3
Do you have a video for how to blend paint ?
It would help to know what compressor you are using? you have affiliate links for everything else but.....
If you don't mind me asking, what adapter are you using for the pps cups?? I would great appreciate it
How do you blend the clear on the door pillar? Great video
Just spray Sikkens SRA blender at the edge. Buff over it in the morning
sickk i just bought one and am using it right now thanks for the vid
Hello Brian. Thank you for everythin! Did you Sand between coats of base in this job? Thanks again.
been waiting for this video for a minute!
I felt that knowledge thru the universe! Very inspiring
I bought the Aero pro A610 which is the updated R500 with three tips(1.3, 1.5 and 1.7) on black Friday for 59.99. Pretty good score
Did you like it? I had to return mine, trigger stuck on it before even putting paint in it.
What Clearcoat do u use?
Hi Brian, I love this videos. I followed your instructions and paint came up great, but I went ahead to cut and buff 2 weeks after following your instructions from other video and the paint lost it’s shine, it feels very soft and flat to the touch, but is not shining as before. Do you think maybe I should have used the 1000grid a bit harder?
U said if we use cheap paint results no good. What brand paint & clear do u recommend for this gun? Something that won’t break the bank the most economical
Bought this last November nd have not had the opportunity to use yet glad you did a vid on it!
Hi Brian! is there a size of air hose and length A painter tends to stick with?
Did you ever try Eastwood's LT gun It's made for smaller compressors 1.3 tip! I think it works pretty well, but I'm no painter!
That is an R500. The R500 is sold under a lot of different brand names, in different colors, with different accessories and pricing, but they're still an R500.
I had a chance to talk to the girls at AeroPro when I was at SEMA. They actually have some pretty cool guns coming out next year
Where is your shop located? I need my car done ✅. I like the way your work is
Thank you so much for the teaching
So if the gun seals break down if left in thinner/cleaner for too long are there better quality seal kits you can get that would prevent this?
Its cheap and it sprays good lot of people don’t have money
Let's try it here (on a customer's car) and if it works good then take it to the garage 😅 this had me LMAO
Always a great review of a spray gun. Thank you for another option for us in our home garage
Yea the shop air is water better then at home compressor air so lets see the gun at its best first before I try and recommend it at home. Lets see its potential first.
Could you compare it to the Eastwood concourse 2 , which is also made for 5-9 cfm compressors ?
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge!
You remind me of the best teacher I ever had... My body shop teacher 😎
Love the channel, btw.
I may be able to teach you some things ;)
Have you ever done a video about protecting your lungs while painting cars? My cousin painted cars for years and unfortunately, he never wore a respirator and now has severe brain damage. He's 60 years old and he can no longer live on his own.
I use this gun it works good for me on a budget
Hi Love your vids, Did you have to add a cup adaptor to that gun?
Is it Amazon that games the price or the supplier? I don't know but have noticed the same thing - when sales pick up the price goes up.
Hey Brian, do you also spray the base with this gun? And what is the nozzle size you used on base and clear?
