  • O, what a parish, a terrible parish,
O, what a parish is that o' Dunkel',
They hangit their minister, droon'd their precentor
Dang doun the steeple, and fuddled the bell.
The steeple was doun, but the Kirk was still staunin',
They biggit a lum whaur the bell used to hang,
A stellpat they gat and they brewed Hieland whisky,
On Sundays they drank it, and ranted and sang.
O, had you but seen how graceful it lookit
To see the cramm'd pews sae socially join
Macdonald the piper stuck up in the poopit
He made the pipes skirl out music divine.
Wi' whisky and beer, they'd curse and they'd swear
They'd argy and fecht what ye daurna weel tell
'Bout Geordie and Cherlie they bothered fu' rarely
Wi' whisky they're worse than the devil himsel'.
When the heart-cheerin' spirit had mounted their garret
To a ball on the green they a' did adjourn
Maids wi' coats kilted, they steppit and liltit
When tired they shook hands, and then hame did return.
If the kirks a'owre Scotland held like social meetin's
Nae warning' ye'd need from a far-tinklin' bell
For a true love and friendship wad draw ye thegither
Far better than roarin' the horrors o' hell.

9:27-9:30, the woman who leans forward in the audience while clapping and smiling was my mom. Love seeing her again so many years after she passed. She'd told me about the "shot the accordionist" line and that she met up with the band at a local pub after the concert she attended and shared drinks with them and had a good time, but I never expected to see her in this clip. I don't think she knew she was in it. Thanks for posting. I grew up with Silly Wizard and Andy Stewart as beloved music in my home. 💚💛💚💛

The wonderful Andy Stewart and Silly Wizard - RIP Andy and Johnny ! best folk entertainers to come out of Scotland - in my opinion !

I got to see Andy Stewart some years later, touring by himself. Was still able to bring the audience to tears of laughter with his introductions. The man was as gifted a storyteller as he was a singer.

I too saw him when he was touring by himself. It was a wonderful evening.

I did stage sound for many years, and that horrid accordion clam and Andy's response are *classic* live-stage stuff! :-D

They were the best - the whole crew. It saddens me greatly that And and Johnny have left the building.
... and you know that was part of the performance, right? Any actual mistakes that Phil or his brother might make would be imperceptible to mere mortals like us (sound engineer also).

I remember hearing this story when I heard them perform in Dayton back in the 80's. Fantastic!

I remember them too. Must have been during the same tour that they came to Charleston, WV.

The good old days of Andy M. Steward and the boys. Their humor put them next to the MacCalmans.

Two of my favourite bands, both regularly visited my local theatre. I must have seen them live about 6 or 8 times each. Saw Andy a few times after he went solo too, and both Johnny and Phil at the early Glasgow Celtic connections festivals.

Absolutely my favorite piece of concert footage ever. I saw the Wizard live perhaps a half dozen times. This short bit of film captures the magic.

Indeed! I am fortunate to have seen them twice during this tour. Love them. "... Shot their accordionist ..."
Another favorite bit of Wizardry from that tour - Johnny doing what Johnny did best: going from bull goose buffoon to one of the most sensitive violinists in the world in 30 seconds.

@@WildDismayJohnny was a magician with the fiddle and I was surprised to discover, a very gentle caring soul. BTW. according to Johnny, " Land Of The Leal" was the last tune/song the Wizard performed together. Andy said it was "Wild Thing". Lol. The five of them together were the musical magic of a wizard.
