Song lyrics are included at the end of this description.
This song was written by Lady Carolina Nairne of Perthshire, Scotland (1766-1845) in about 1798. The air that she set her words to is a very old Scottish tune. In "The Scottish Review," Vol. 27, Pg. 115, published 1896, the air is called "Hey Now The Day Dawes." Subsequently an "anonymous versifier" set lyrics to the tune, which became known as "Hey Tuttie Taitie" or "Hey Tuttie Tattie." Robert Burns then set "Scots Wha Hae" to the tune, saying "I have met the tradition universally over Scotland, and particularly about Stirling, in the neighbourhood of the scene, that this air was Robert the Bruce's March at the battle of Bannockburn, which was fought in 1314." Thereafter, Lady Nairne set "Land O' The Leal" to the same tune. This information can be found in "The Scotish* Musical Museum, Consisting of Upwards of Six Hundred Songs, Vol. II," published 1839, pages 162-168, which contains the musical notation for the original tune, "Hey Now The Day Dawes." Link to the book on Google Books: goo.gl/uvqJ2 Please note that the lyrics to "Land O' The Leal" are introduced with the statement: "The ingenious author still unknown to the editor." The lyrics were later often attributed to Burns, until after Lady Nairne's death, when her sister published, in 1846, her collected works in a book titled "Lays from Strathearn."
A comprehensive history of the two songs can be found in the book "Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians," Volume 5, published 1910, pages 664-666, which is currently available for viewing on Google Books at this link: goo.gl/3imDb The article has also been transcribed and is available to read here: www.mustrad.org... (do a search for "Scots Wha Hae").
The video was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. This song has always been one of my favorites, but this performance is even more touching to me now that Johnny has passed away. I hope that he has found his own land o' the leal.
This song can also be found on Andy M. Stewart's CD "Man in the Moon."

I'm wearin' awa, Jean,
Like snaw-wreaths in thaw, Jean
I'm wearin' awa' tae the Land o' the Leal
There's nae sorrow there, Jean,
There's neither cauld nor care, Jean
The day is aye fair in the Land o' the Leal
Ye aye were leal and true, Jean
Your task is ended noo, Jean
And I'll welcome you tae the Land o' the Leal
Our bonnie bairn's there, Jean
She was baith guid and fair, Jean
And oh, we grudged her sair, tae the Land o' the Leal
So dry that tearful ee, Jean,
My soul longs tae be free, Jean
And angels wait on me in the Land o' the Leal
So fare-thee-weel my ain Jean,
This world's care is vain, Jean
We'll meet and aye be fain, in the Land o' the Leal
*Not a typo - this is the original title of the book.
Brings me to tears every time I listen to this song. Having lost my dear daughter 20 months ago, I know the feeling of intense loss. I do hope there is such a place as the Land O' the Leal for her and Andy and Johnny"s sake. May they all rest in peace. Such a wonderful band was Silly Wizard. I have their recordings to remember them by. Thanks for sharing.
My cousin Andy sadly missed. But in the land of the Leal. X
"Scith A Ligean" Andy...you've brougth and laughter to millions! I'm a Piper and "The Land O' The Leal" was the first bagpipe tune I learned. I'm 71 years old now and that tune WILL be preformed at my funeral! It's beautiful...and so were you! Thank you! Jim Marsh A&SH REGIMENT/ Queens Club Piper.
So so many singers sound alike, but not Andy Stewart. He was uniquely talented - RIP.
Fiddle of Johnny Cunningham Is the singing of the soul
That is just sublime. What a great performance of a beautiful song.

I JUST LISTENED FOR THE FIRST TIME TO ANDY M. STEWART SING, "THE LAND O' THE LEAL...AND I CRIED WHILST ANDY SANG AND WHEN JOHN PLAYED BEAUTIFULLY THE FIDDLE. AS I STUDIED ANDY AS HE WAS SINGING, I COULD ACTUALLY FEEL HIS HEART IN HIS WORDS. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING...THIS WORLD NEEDS MORE OF WHAT ANDY MODELED SO WELL, IN HIS REALNESS, HIS WARMTH, HIS HUMOR/QUICK WIT, HIS SIMPLISTICALLY PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE, AND OF COURSE HIS HEART WAS HEARD IN EVERY WORD HE SANG SO BEAUTIFULLY! I LOVE THE UNIQUENESS OF THE TONE AND QUALITY OF HIS VOICE. HIS TONE RESONATED FROM HIS GENTLE HEART. IT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE SO AMAZINGLY GIFTED AND TALENTED, AND OF COURSE HIGHLY REGARDED FOR ALL OF HIS LOVELY CHARACTER TRAITS WAS TAKEN SO YOUNG.
SADLY, I NEVER MET ANDY, BUT I BELIEVE WE WILL MEET IN THE LAND O' THE LEAL. I CAN PICTURE ANDY SINGING TO JESUS AND TO MY GRAND BABY GIRL IN HEAVEN AND TO ALL MY LOVED ONES AND EVERYONE. HIS VOICE WILL BE HEARD IN HEAVEN THROUGH ETERNITY! ALTHOUGH I AM AN AMERICAN (BORN AND RAISED)...MY MOTHER WAS A GORDON, SO I HAVE SOME SCOTTISH BLOOD IN ME FOR SURE! MARINE, SGT T.R. GORDON, WHO WAS STATIONED IN SCOTLAND MANY YEARS AGO, HAS ADOPTED SCOTLAND AS HIS TRUE "HOMELAND."...HE AUTHORED AND PUBLISHED A BRILLIANT BOOK~~"A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY THROUGH SCOTLAND" BY T.R. GORDON...CHECK IT OUT! TIM, (MARINE) SENT ME THIS VIDEO OF ANDY AND I WILL FOREVER LOVE THIS SONG AND AGREE WITH SGT T.R. GORDON OF THE USMC, IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL~~THANK YOU TIM, AND THANK YOU, DEAR ANDY, FOR SHARING YOUR VOICE, YOUR HEART, YOURSELF, WITH THE WORLD! GOD BE WITH ANDY'S FAMILY.~~BEV~~USA, VIRGINIA
BLESSINGS~~
God wanted his talent elsewhere for sure.
What a terrible loss - gone way too soon, but his music will live forever. RIP Andy.
This song makes me cry every time :')
What an absolutely fantastic fiddler Johnny was. And what a brilliant band of tallent!
Scottish folk music Gold ! My only regret is never having a dram with these fine people..
Unfortunately, I did not discover Silly Wizard until they were about to break up. This is the first time I have heard this gorgeous song. Thank you so much for posting it.
Wow, never even heard or heard of these lads. Awesome music! Thanks for sharing.
Bless you for posting this and the other Silly Wizard videos. Of the 500+ Celtic CDs I own, Live Wizardry is clearly the best. I have all the Silly Wizard CDs, all the Andy M. Stewart CDs, and seen Andy, Phil and Johnny probably a dozen times. Andy's voice still gives me chills. Nobody else since has been as magical as Silly Wizard.
Great voice RIP Andy
Thank you so much for sharing!!! Amazing...
This has been a favorite song of mine since 1963 when I heard it on Alex Campbell's LP he Best Loved Songs of Bonnie Scotland.
I sang it at my kid brother's memorial service, along with Taps.
It's said that Lady Nairne wrote this for a berieved friend , and I'm sure it's so. A dirge that still manages to celebrate life.
Cannot tell you how much I love this song. When the fiddle comes in - takes my breath away. Sublime is the right word. It makes me cry though!
blessed blessed sound

России. Я обожаю Энди стюарта. И Силли визард. Эта музыка со мной всю жизнь. Для гениев преград нет.
God bless Shamu.
God, John was a legend.
Surely Andy was one of Scotland's greatest voices, and Johnny's fiddle playing pure and clean beyond describing. Great musicians, lovely people, sorely missed.
Superb music and banter from the best folk group in the world...
Heartbreakingly beautiful. I find it hard to listen without weeping.
The most beautiful and touching song ever written. I love it even though it breaks my heart and makes me cry every time.
My husband and I are so sorry for your families loss of this great man. The world is so much dimmer without Andy. Prayers and comfort to you all.

very saddened to hear of this mans passing...the angels chorus just got another beautiful voice
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, sung by Andy M. Stewart, who was a remarkable talent with a golden voice. Superb performance by Silly Wizard.
God bless Johnny, and the rest of the boys.
Oh how beautiful, such beautiful lyrics sung so well by such a beautiful singer. God Bless you Andy.
All the band is great, the song is wonderful, both lyrics and tune, but Johnny’s performance is... simply no words
Just wonderful.R.I.P. Andy.
This is without doubt the most moving example of how a band should interact with an audience. Fantastic music, and a voice that is clear and drips with emotion. This is THE band I wish I could have seen live.
I never usually comment on typically banal internet forums but in learning of the passing of this incredibly talented man, I feel compelled to comment. Incredible tune, incredible performance - thank you Andy.
True .same
Wow 👏
Andy your voice and your music will live on for every
I am shocked, learning this info. I first saw Silly Wizard sometime in 1981 at the International House in Phila. PA. I have been listening to them and Andy Stewart ever since. This is a great lost to our FOLKSONG SOCIETY and everyone.R.I.P. You will be missed.
first you cry with laughter, then you cry with the beauty...stunning.
Music and entertainment don't get any better than this!
It's late to offer condolences, but Andy was indeed a lovely soul whom I never tired of listening to. We are all thankful that he was able to share his Leal spirit with so many.
27.12.15 - It's being reported on the internet just now that Andy M. has departed from us to join Johnny in the "Land Of The Leal". We had some great times, and great music together, and I will miss him. R.I.P. Andy.
My thanks to the person who posted this clip - a perfect example of both Andy's wit and singing ability.
+DOUGLAS HADDEN I heard this last night from my sister, at a family Christmas get together, and I'm feeling deep sadness. He, and silly Wizard, were deep influences on us musically. beauty, wit and humanity.
It's wonderful, and so were they!
A sad time for you indeed. Your dear brother sings this so very beautifully.
I love this song, I commented once before about my children that are in the land of the leal, this song makes me cry at times, it makes me smile at times, it comforts me and it tortures me. I sing it when I am alone and especially when I'm drunk, which is often considering I have nothing to live for.
I hope you are doing a bit better now. You have a strong will and a good soul.
God bless you and keep you.
If you are still here, you will find something to live for. Songs like this are part of our grieving .... God bless you and keep you ....
You touched my heart with your very sad story. May you find some peace sometime. The tears always roll down my face and soak my beard when I listen to this one….
God bless
Johnnie yer sairly missed
God love Johnny, Andy - The Silly Wizards - & NoRefillsLeft - for posting! These 1988 Atlanta Georgia Concert live vids are dazzling gems not just for.the hauntingly lovely music - the introductory banter: PRICELESS! Thank you -
I miss Johnny Cunningham so much...saw Silly Wizard twice and Relativity once. Such great music.
Just discovered Silly Wizard myself a few weeks ago, and this performance was in my hometown. Never knew they played there!
RIP Andy m Stewart
Thanks for posting this. I was at this concert -- 1st row. I was 21. You can find this song also on Andy M. Stewart's solo record: Man In The Moon.
Really lovely. One of the finest bands to come out of Scotland... looking forward to checking out the other videos.
I love this song. Nice to hear it here by Silly Wizard a great band.
I'd only heard it before by 5 Hand Reel on one of their albums.
The special quality of Silly Wizard to no doubt especially due to Andy M. Stewart and as well of course the beautiful instrumental backup and interplay. The banter on stage that we hear here is of course very entertaining as well. I am sorry I never got to hear them in performance, as I often went to McCalmans concerts, but Silly Wizard broke up such a long time ago, unfortunately.
I was fortunate. My husband and friends and I loved them and saw them several times... our son Andrew was named in part after Andy M. Stewart.
Loved my cousin Andy
Great voice! Great band!! Every time I listen them my soul feels real emotions and I imagine that I'm travel to Scotland with it's beautifull nature, mountains and Glens!! One of my favorite bands for all the time!!
Beautiful. The first time I heard this song I cried and felt different emotions of happiness, sadness, anger ,rejection, passion, and a ton of emotions and feelings I can't describe.I listened it to at least 15 times before I knew the real meaning of life.
Wow, just hearing this now. Followed him everywhere in Boston. What a major loss. What a talent. Blessings to those who loved him and must live through his loss.
I can't stop listening to this song. So beautiful, yet so sad.
I had not heard that Andy had passed. Thanks for posting. RIP Andy & Johnny
Just beautiful .........
I didnt know he passed away. I m soo soo sad.His music helps me a lot in tough moments in life. I will pray for him :*(
Jan borrowing Dan's account here. I was at the Atlanta concert where this was filmed, possibly the best concert I've been to in my entire life. I saw Silly Wizard twice in Atlanta, and Andy Stewart with Manus Lunny and Sileas once, and Relativity twice. The Celtic music scene in Atlanta in the 80s and 90s was incredible if you looked for it. We also had Theatre Gael dedicated to performing plays by Scots, Irish, and Welsh playwrights. This song, combining Johnny's sweet sweet fiddle with Andy's heartfelt singing brings tears every time. It even inspired me to include the promise to be "leal" in our wedding vows, because to me Andy's explanation deepens the meaning beyond loyal/faithful to something that's just good and trustworthy through and through, which is how I feel about our marriage. Silly Wizard and Relativity were leal bands. God bless Johnny, Andy, Michael, and those who still miss them.
What a beautiful song. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you so much for sharing this. For me, Andy Stewart's voice is bound with 'Skye'. Everytime we go there, I put Silly Wizard on the dvd player in the car - and it's our background music for the holiday. I adore Skye, and I adore Andy Stewart's voice: sublime!
Volim škotsku i njihovu muziku.
I love Silly wizard and Andy Stewart! Thank you so very much for sharing this!! Were you there?!? Have you any more? Thanks again!!
R.I.P. Andy
As an atheist I still enjoy all the good music that your religions produce... the music lives on as long as there are people and electricity..... if you really believe in heaven then why are you wearing a seatbelt?
Andy and Johnny were amazing musicians and shall be remembered as long as there are music lovers around (and electricity)
EntropyFan nobody gives a shit about u being an atheist. Haha really
Theres always a never ending path in life
Fkin love Scottish folk music.
With love ' n emotion, for Silly Wizard from Rome!
I've seen and met Andy a couple of times. He's a very nice man, funny as hell, and knows how to give you chills with a haunting song....chills like I'm having right now.
a truly beautiful song and brilliant singing and playing...
@stat1791...Me too. I was lucky enough to see silly wizard a bunch of times in the 80's. One night Johnny came and hung out at our table. A great fiddler, and a really funny guy :-)
Absolutely one of my favorite vids!
A sad song, but beautifully performed by a great singer with a great backup. The commentary was great too, it is like being at a live performance at a coffee house or small venue where the performer can communicate with the audience. I almost feel as though I were there, which sadly I was not. Reminds me of the few times I got to see my favorite performers live. I wondered what a leal was, I imagined a flock of leals grazing on the Scottish highlands, but now I know what the word means. Or perhaps flocks of leals flying overhead, filling the air with their beautiful, poetic calls. But now I know. The advantage of youtube posts, they do not have to be limited by the space on a CD.
Well, this song has come tae my heart an' my heart is where t'will stay.
Nonsense. I learned this tune, Land o' the Leal, from Donald MacLeod, son of Angus MacLeod, piper to the Queen (Victoria), when I was a boy.
It is one of the most heart rending laments when you hear it played by a sensitive lone piper, awe inspiring when played by full pipes and drums.
Often played at Armistice.
See you in the Land O'the Leal, Andy
Taken from us too soon lads. But ye left a fine musical legacy. RIP.
i heard this version of the song over and over again - wonderful - thanks for sharing
Anyone listening in 2021..?
YESSSY and I enjoy these guys soo much!
I watched a very long haired SW perform in Chester once over.. never forgot it!
Thanks
Wow, I was at this show.
This is not fair .Rip Andy and thank so lot for your Music !
They were such a great band! I saw them play in Austin at the Cactus Cafe on this tour... just fantastic! Thanks for posting these, NoRefillsLeft! I would love to see one of these concerts released on DVD.
I saw Andy with Gerry O'Beirne at the Cactus 9 years ago. Good folk! (First saw Johnny solo in '83)
You can buy it on ITunes and Amazon for $.99 for the mp3. Search for "Andy M. Stewart" and "Man in the Moon" - "Land O' The Leal" is the last song on the CD. Just in case you don't know, Andy was the singer for Silly Wizard, seen in this clip, and "Man in the Moon" is one of his excellent solo albums. The CD version is very beautiful, but it lacks the specific violin solo that Johnny plays in this clip - but I love Andy's solo version too.
The banter between Andy and Johnny actually serves as a light- hearted counterpoint for what is to come: a song of loss. Ah but Johnny's violin elevates it to an even more tender chord. Here is the better version. It is a masterpiece.
Thanks for these Silly Wizard films. Even though I'm an effete sassenach their music never fails to move me. Leaves me with a yearning for I know not what.
Thank God for effete Sassenachs. We love them. Cheers, pal. Here's tae ye!
Thank you so much for this post! Silly Wizard played here in Rockford, Il. at Charlottes Web and were truly amazing! Life goes on, but losing some old friends is tough. Thanks again
Verry beautiful song !
Heavenly song!
I agree. I found this old quote that says exactly what you did, essentially, but it's old, dated 1896, from "The Scottish Review," Vol. 27, Pg. 115: ""The old tune 'Hey, tuttie tattie,' which is believed to have been used as a battle-song by Robert the Bruce, is the same tune which now-a-days, when given with vigour and spirit, is called 'Scots, wha ha'e wi' Wallace bled,' or when slow and pathetic 'The Land o' the Leal.' . . . " continued next post
This is heartbreaking.
such a good share , thank you.
So I've come here because this song is mentioned in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. Having heard it I don't really understand why he chose this song for that particular scene, but I am glad to have found this song, because it is beautiful. Also thank you for your extensive background info on both the song and this recording in the description!
excellent .. thanks to see the Wizzard .. and ... Johnny .. so ,, nice ... merci
Beautiful
Whit a guid craic the lads had aboot them, could hud a fair tune as weel. Cheers.
Whoever the person was that disliked this video is anything but leal.
Ah, the chair thing. That's the "Point of No Return". It's the same on a motorcycle at a stop.
You try to keep it from tipping over.
I just found out. So sad!
my bro's name is Leal im so proud to be his little sis
In memory of Shamu the Killer Whale. And God Bless You, Johnny.
". . . No pibroch air can be used in forming two distinct tunes in this way, but the example shows to what an extent the mere method of rendering can alter an air."
I find this stuff fascinating, so thanks for the questions, it is fun to research about these wonderful auld songs. In fact, I've found even earlier info for the tune, which I'll add to the description above, but the original air's first known title is "Hey Now The Day Dawes." :)
