Yes, I think terms like "inerrancy" (though personally I prefer positive terms like "trustworthy" or "faithful") should be understood as relative to God's purposes in revealing himself over time to his people, and the various divergent perspectives and literary genres used to do this. If the text were totally flat, we could receive it more or less passively. But precisely because it's messy in these ways, it requires more of us: to be engaged (even if sometime perplexed) participants, and to genuinely interact with the text as God's _living_ Word.

Hi Faith, I recently found your channel last week and I am loving it. I have this beautiful "Illuminated Bible" that is meant for Art Journaling, and it has beautiful designs already in it. I literally have left it in it's beautiful box due to being scared of messing it up, so I'm using different Bible to study with....hahahaha. Well, I finally opened it up and started using it. You encouraged us in one of your videos to not be afraid to get into our bibles, and use them, rough them up. And truthfully, all the woman in my church (the older ladies) their bibles are so worn out and look like they are falling apart. They are being used! I just had to share, because now I love being in my "Illuminated Bible", it brings me so much joy, and I'm loving your content, keep it up :) Robin

This makes so much sense. I always wondered why the bible has contradictions. Reading the letters that Paul wrote, he is very sarcastic to get his points across.

    • @trafficjon400
      @trafficjon400 2 года назад

He was Sarcastic for sure when he thought Jesus was just a usless bumb .but is also explaining we are saved because Jesus has all ready cleansed us after death through his spirit. and God he said all ready rid killed our Sin in the flesh in the new Law of sin also witch is why we suffer today and we can see that every where we go at times. I did not like paul being Sarcastic and hating and wanting to kill Jesus and what he get is salvation for it just because Jesus proves to him he is real and sets a killer on a journey to give us the great news also Jesus or God Naming Paul the GREAT APOSTOL. I guess has to be understood by Faith is a little confusing still. nice to know we are all ready saved in the Spirit with out the Contradictions may be because prophets were very tired through out the 100,s or 1000s of years to Keep the history in tact. 700 Years also missing in a great chunk off Scriptue and God telling us he won't let us know some thing. for a reason no Christian will ever know.

I find this stuff very interesting and exciting. I think it adds to the tactility of the scriptures, you can feel the human handprint that God used to have His word come about. It wasn’t always a book, they were handwritten scrolls, passed down, copied by hand over and over again, taken from place to place, read, handled, used generation to generation and it’s so interesting to get a peak into how they evolved.
Tim Mackie has a PhD in Semitic Languages and Biblical Studies. He wrote his dissertation on the manuscript history of the book of Ezekiel, with a focus on the Septuagint and Dead Sea Scrolls. He spent 2 years going through the whole book and finding any differences between the Septuagint and the Hebrew and found many. Mostly, I believe, things that at first were little notes or references added by the scribes that as they kept being copied over eventually just became part of the text itself. How fascinating!
I remember the first time I found a contradiction myself. In studying the biblical feasts, for the feast of weeks they had to make a congregational burnt offering. In Leviticus 23:18-20 it says they were to offer 1 bull and 2 rams, but in Numbers 28:26-31 it’s says 2 bulls and 1 ram.
I can guess and say that the correct ratio was 2 bulls and 1 ram because that emulates the burnt offering given for the new month described in Numbers 28:11-15. But who knows, I just find it really interesting that they don’t match, and I can let my imagination take me back and wonder why. Did it begin with Moses? Or somewhere else along the way?
But thank you for your approach, this shouldn’t threaten our faith and reliability in the word, but can even strengthen it! Because just like God used imperfect humans to bring His word to us, he can do amazing things through normal flawed people like us!

Right and seems to make sense? Prophets probable did not intentionally screw it up a bit but still sounds like Creator was involved With Jesus Moses Paul John Noha But And Paul wanting to kill Jesus? and then gets shocked by Jesus coming to him and saves PAUL With 100% proof that jesus exist and gets Salvation . this makes us little ants with a faith 2-3000 years later impossible to believe and not fair at all. eventually science will make every Man a none believer be caouse it also said so in scripture. The Great Falling Away. But it still does not give them Hell or parishing after Death They will See Just Like Paul did and trying to explain with some Man thoughts involved in scripture. God Said are all ready Dead in the sin full flesh and Saved in the spirit with a new body after Jesus has Cleansed us enough to be come part of Salvation a Clean none infectious universe 🌌 🌌 i would think for it Explains it deep in Romans. God even said how can i see your sin in the flesh when its all ready dead for i am blinded by it. Meaning God does not see our sin today. but we are made human by God and naturally will feel punished by our sin of the New law Covenant and suffering is paying for it now like a Hell in its own also. Jesus said Hell the kind we like to think does not exist any more for Jesus went to hell and mayed it a Paradise. its in scripture so ha ha Blessings are hard to get for God can see us in the flesh but in the spirit we are cleaned. Makes sense but what would any true believer expect. Blessings whether or not i guess. 😇😇😇

Use scripture to interpret scripture. God Himself is light. He does not need the sun. The sun was created for man to mark days and seasons and for the benefit of the things created. There is no contradiction with creation.

Genesis 2 is just a detailed account of of the sixth day in Genesis 1, there's no contradiction. This is probably caused by a misunderstanding of Genesis 2:19 being a recap.

Exactly! As a teacher we give a syllabus when we start a new unit. It’s simply a bullet point layout of what we will learn about during that unit. Then with each lesson we go in depth about the subject at hand. Genesis 2 is simply doing just that, going into depth about what God considered his most important or “very good” creation.

Having researched a lot of apologetics, I would make a small but important distinction right off the bat. Sceptics/Atheists LOVE to keep saying that there are contradictions in the Bible. What you talked about ARE NOT contradictions. They are DIFFERENCES. This, to me, is very important. Contradictions say something that would nullify the truth of another statement. I have not come across any statements that are in opposition to each other (unless purposely showing a paradox between them).
As for the final one in regards to Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." The word used in the verse is "Almah" which does mean "young woman" as opposed to "Betulah" which means "virgin". The word "betulah" just means any woman who has not had sex. You could be 80 years old and still be considered a "betulah". Almah is more specific that it is a young girl of marrying age, although not explicit, this also would imply that she was a virgin. Much like our stories of the "young maiden" in fairy tales. The social construct carries with it her virginity.
That aside, the word was translated by Jewish scholars to "parthenos" from the Hebrew to the Greek in the 3rd Century BC when they translated the Tanakh into the Septuagint. Scholars at that time thought the context meant "virgin" and was a prophecy of the Messiah. It wasn't until after the birth of Jesus that Jewish scholars stopped using the Septuagint and put together their "Masoretic Texts" to remove this aspect. This was done with other prophecies as well when compared to the older interpretations before Jesus and then how they were interpreted after Jesus (Isaiah 53 is a prime example-used to be seen as the Messiah and is now taught as Israel).

Here's the biggie for me. There are at least 17 or more scriptures in the NT that say that the resurrection occurred either “in three days” or “on the third day.” But, there are just 2 scriptures, MT 27:63 and Mark 8:31, that specifically say that the resurrection occurred “after three days.” That is a HUGE controversy that many miss! The resurrection of Jesus and WHEN it occurred is central to our faith! You can't have a resurrection in three days and after three days too. It's physically impossible! The issue is in the preposition “after.” Turns out that the Greek word for that is translated 5 times more often as “with.” So, to use the majority usage, it should read “within three days,” thereby not violating all the other scriptures that differ. That's the issue. Violating the other scriptures does harm to the integrity of God's Word! That's a bad thing!
It's interesting that just one chapter later from Mark 8:31 to Mark 9:31, it literally says “the third day!” Incredible! The same writer, one chapter later, says something entirely different, contradicting his own text? Not in the Greek! Its perfectly fine in the Greek! Why the translators chose to do this defies explanation. Oh! Only “some” translators. Turns out, from the KJV and forward, due to “tradition,” its translated “after.” But not in Tyndale's translation from 1535. And not in Whittingham's 1560 GENEVA BIBLE either! Those two guys got it right! They translated both those scriptures as “within three days.” King James ordered a new translation because of the truth and accuracy in this bible! In case you don't have a Geneva Bible, the 1599 Geneva Bible is available online from several sources. There's just something wonderfully aged from a wisdom point of view in that bible. I own both the 1599 and the 1560. I think it may be in the public domain by this point. But that 1599 version is easily read even by you young folks. And there's wisdom in there.

Hello, been looking at your videos and admire your hunger for the word of God, and your study of it. I edited my original post here because I was disturbed when you said the Word of God had contradictions.
For example the Chronicles/Kings text where you say there is a huge debate over the size of the columns. But I found two commentary’s below that easily explained the issue.
Barnes notes on the Bible said the pillar shaft alone was 18 cubits and then after adding the chapiter 1 Kings 7:16 and 1 Kings 7:19 it was 27 cubits. Benson commentary goes into more description about this too. There are different pieces of the entire column, including a stone base..
I want to be kind, but also warn you that the enemy uses doubt to get people to turn away from the Bible, not to go towards it.
Whenever someone puts doubts in their sermons or teaching I wonder why they don’t take the time to expel the doubt and prove the truth instead of leaving their audience with a bunch of doubts to research on their own. I also don’t think the word contradiction applies on all the things that you found were “contradictions”.

Or it helps us better understand the truth! Deal with hard topics or shy away?
The point is not to live in doubt or the end result be doubt, but a true and deep study of God’s Word brings up questions. Who would you want to deal with them? A Christian? An Atheist?
The goal is to dive deeper into God’s Word and know He is sovereign and good! Doubt is not the goal, a relationship with Jesus is! Thanks y’all!

I also feel that many of the “contradictions” is because of the place and time. For example, I have been a Spanish interpreter, I have spoken Spanish all my life from my Cuban parents. When I was interpreting for the health department there were a lot of people from Central America and what I would say one way for Cubans would be totally wrong for someone from México or El Salvador. So when I would tell them- take your medicine and drink some water. Just the words take and drink are said totally different and if the way you say to a Cuban you say it to a Mexican it might be offensive. I would literally speak with the elderly from those different countries and verify how they would say it so I wouldn’t offend them. I am just saying this because place, times, etc can modify things that are the same but are said differently

I was just recently studying Job and he actually sewed a seed for his (harvest) that satan - (who is still a reaper angel even though he is fallen) was able to go to request the harvest for that seed Job planted. It was his FEAR of what his children were doing that he was continually offering sacrafices for ( just in case) that allowed for his harvest. That is why God didn't allow for his life to be taken- he had not sewn a seed that would harvest the loss of his life.
He did understand the seed time harvest system of God which is also why he did not curse God about it. His wife did though and there was harvest for that as well.
That's a small part that I've been studying up on. God's system of seed time harvest is the established in Genisis and one you get an understanding of that it answers some of the other seemingly contradictions of the good from the old testament to the one of the new and had helped in understanding the seeds in sewing in my everyday life that I was unaware of before learning about it.
I love your energy and your thought process.
I just stared following you and I've been greatly enlightened. Thank you :)

The Bible can seem contradictory and difficult for the Western mind raised in a Greco-Roman culture. Scripture is a Middle Eastern book written by Middle Easterners. That is why it is important to read Scripture from a Hebraic mindset. By doing so, the Scripture is much less contradictory and confusing.

At 5:40 . . . it is CONCERNING and WORRYING that we (as MODERN humans) are created with the ABILITY to blatantly SEE and notice contradictioins in The Bible, to the extent that we must . . . at 5:40 come up with our own appropriations, improvisations and generalizations to perform QUICK FIXES or fill-in . . . the "Gaps" 🧐🤕🙄 I get terrified by the idea. The REASON i am CONCENRED is becuz of
Deuteronomy 4:2 = You shall Not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it.
and the REASON i am also TERRIFIED by the idea is becuz of
    Revelation 22:18-19
I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and [a]from the holy city, which are written in this book.
of course ONE might be tempted to say that we can ADD and REDUCE (summarize/generalize 🧐😲!!) as we personally see fit into (or OUT of) the book of Genesis because clearly Genesis is Not quite the forbidden book in both of my quoted scriptures above, i.e. Deuteronomy is more about "Do NOT add/remove a word from my COMMANDMENTS [only commandments]" while Revelation is also clearly about "Do NOT add/remove a word from the prophecy of THIS book [only the book of Revelation]". However, Proverbs actually dumps more fuel into this narrative . . .
    Proverbs 30:5-6
    **Every word** of God is tested;

I still don't understand what the contradiction is in Isa 7:14... it's a foretelling of a virgin giving birth to Jesus. Are you saying you don't believe Mary was actually a virgin? I'm really confused about what is a contradiction about this verse....

    • @HowtoFaithALife
      @HowtoFaithALife  2 года назад

Hey! Sorry, I totally felt like I didn't explain that well, either! In the Hebrew it didn't say virgin, but rather "young girl" in the septuagint it was translated to "virgin"- that's the contradiction that many nonbelievers love to point out. But, my argument against that is also not well explained, I say, at the time a young girl WAS a virgin.

@@HowtoFaithALife Could I give some further insight? Correct me if I get it wrong ::)
The word Isaiah uses is “alma”, it can interchangeably mean “young woman” or “virgin depending on the context, for example in Genesis 24:43, it clearly means virgin.
Also, the aforementioned Septuagint with no theological bias, translates “alma” as “Parthenos” which definitely means virgin.
To say they made a mistake on this one word just sounds like special pleading to me.
And on a side note, the context of Isaiah 7 implies something more than just a normal birth, so just saying “a young woman will conceive” doesn’t match the context in my opinion.
And obviously what you said about young women usually being virgins ::)
So, I don’t see this as any kind of error. Matthew got it right. ✝️

I love your videos (I'm 4 minutes into this one). But the word contradiction means that one statement proves or shows another of the same source false (or otherwise opposed to each other). 😁 These are "alleged contradictions," because they can't be proven to be contradictions. Sorry if it sounds condescending to point out technicalities that you probably already know. I don't mean it to sound that way - but unbelievers will use the word "contridiction" as "proof," without looking deeper. They don't care how we explain it. It's still a "contradiction" to them. Love you. :) Keep making videos. :) I might comment again when I'm done watching this.

YES! I call them contradictions "tongue in cheek" or as some call it "facetiously". I like to challenge our understanding of the scriptures and inerrancy because I think a lot of Christians don't wrestle with these issues and then think they have to doubt their faith when they face them, but that's not the case AT ALL!

Many of the "contradictions" that are being pointed out are because of man and the way man rewords God's word. The oldest bible we have is the KJV and while some find it harder to read it has the truest form of what God wants us to know. We all know that man will lead you astray, but God will keep us on the path of righteousness. Be careful to say, "in his word, God says" it may be what man says. God intended us to follow the purest word he set down. So, if you don't read KJV at least compare the scriptures and count it as the right one. I am not saying nothing can come from other versions because I do believe there's something to be learned from everything you do. It's just that I feel many of the versions cause the contradictions. May God bless what you are doing to help others get focused on the things that are important to a full life with Christ.

First of all, your definition of "contradiction" is overly broad. Even so, many of the issues you name are not contradictions. Just because 1 Chronicles leaves something out does not create a contradiction. Cain married his sister (or his niece). Just because only three of Eve's children are named, does not mean she only had three. We don't even know if Cain and Abel were the first two. They may have had many older siblings, they Bible doesn't say.
The problem is that you may leave the impression that there are errors in the Bible, when actually almost all of the contradictions are easily explained. I don't want people to get the wrong impression from this video.

    There aren't "contradictions".
People love to read it wrongly and read their own misunderstandings into it. It's not a scientific book. But it is historical journals mixed with poetry.
E.g. your first statement about the Days, makes long time, as opposed to what the text actually says, "it was morning, and it was evening, the next day."
The question should be asked, "what was the reason God made the sun later?"
It ties in well with Revelation where it says "there will be no need for the sun, because light will come from God himself."

Hi! I like your enthusiasm 🙂.
I'll rewatch for the specifics and get back to you on this.
In the meantime I'll give you my principles that I use to run these difficult topics through my 'parser'.
      1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, strength. (Matt 22.37. The greatest commandment.
      2. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding. In all your ways acknowledge the Lord and He will direct your paths. (Proverbs 3)
      3. 2Tim. 3 Verses 16 to 17
[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
Taken together, (and more) these demonstrate to me how I can process apparent 'contradictions'.
      1. Most 'contradictions' do not affect the overall message of the Bible, that being Jesus came to save us from Sin and Death. As such, they generally aren't worth worrying about. They can be interesting to explore.
      2. If there is a 'contradiction', this means there is something I don't understand about either of the perspectives presented. I have learned to be comfortable with "I don't know." And the more I learn, the older I get and experience of this life, the more I realize that I don't need to know everything. The Bible does not cover every detail, it is not a science book. There are no indepth explanations for some things, and I think we will not know them on this side of Death / Heaven / Reality. We can explore, we can study, we can guess and infer. But outside the Bible some things just aren't visible to us. E g. We only know about Seraphim because the Bible mentions them by their specific title. I hazard a guess with this that No human has seen them in the physical and lived to tell of it.
      3. I'm ok with juxtapositions, with paradoxes, with complications, with complimentary truths. God often seems to do things deliberately that doesn't make sense to human logic. For example, "It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out." (Proverbs 25.2) Like a Parent creating a treasure hunt for his/her kids.
Puzzles for us to figure out. Maths is a set of universal rules that were waiting thousands of years to be discovered. We didn't create them. Fractals were really only explorable once the creation of computers came into existence. Before that it was really hard for human brain to grasp. Now we can all enjoy them and their infinity, giving us a glimpse into one aspect of God's Infinity / Eternal nature.
I view 'contradictions' in a similar way.
"What else can I learn from this?"
      "What have I missed here?"
My answers are usually either "I don't know" or I explore it until I do understand them. From this, I say, there are no contradictions in the Bible. There are mysteries to further explore, or strangeness to hold lightly.
Hope this helps. Will rereply later.

The bible doesn’t have contradictions. It is inerrant as God’s holy book and not to be read or criticised as just a book written by fallible man. It is fully inspired by the Holy Ghost. Make sure you have a King James Bible. Then learn to rightly divide (otherwise known as dispensationalism). The bible is to be taken literally unless there is a good reason not to. God says he made this on this day, then he did! Believe it as it is written. You should be born again of the Spirit of God to understand his spiritual word, as the carnal man cannot understand spiritual things. Some brethren who have good information regarding the bible version issue are Sam Gipp, Gail Riplinger (sister, author), Chick Tracts and David Daniels, Peter Ruckman, Bryan of King James Video Ministries.

As for dispensationalism, I would HIGHLY encourage you to read more about covenant theology. After all, that is literally what "Testament" means- covenant! The Bible is the story of God redeeming His people for His glory, it is Him keeping His promise from the beginning despite our unfaithfulness!

Proverbs yes. but God said specific in Romans That we are dead in sin in the Flesh because God Killed allready the sinful flesh and can no longer see it. God said how can i see your sin in the Flesh when its all ready dead for dead is dead. And said but should you sin ? of course not God forbid but the New law of the sinfull flesh is natural punishment because the Human body is not Built for sin. Why today when we sin We still feel guilty and the Pain of suffering Sin. But when we try not to sin and full fill the Pain slacks off more and more. yet not all way's in many clear none sinners who say they don't sin will end up with the worse pain any one would not wish on thier worse enemy. Like a true sinnles believer i knew eneded up with the most painfull SHINGLES. This is very confusing but my faith ignores it i guess. Why Scripture seems like a game of thorns some times.

Hey, maybe consider what the text meant to the original audience, our face value reading won't be the same as theirs. For example, the ancient people considered something to exist when is had a function, not just when it was physically there. Also, Genesis 1 is very Theologised, we can't assume that the author was necessarily trying to write exact scientific history. I hope that's helpful

Did you share with your husband this video before you posted it? Did you consult the elders in your church? You are going on the flawed premise that any error or contradiction you perceived or read about is the bible's issue and not yours. Remember 2Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed(A) and is useful for teaching,(B) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(C) GOD-BREATHED!!! God does not contradict himself, GOD makes no errors. My dear lady, please be careful with the megaphone that God has provided you, it is easy for the enemy to use our pride to turn what we think is our service to God in to a tool for the enemy.
