As snowplow technology progressed the sheds were almost totally removed. Some concrete ones still exist at Important points... Even nowdays the Railroad starts clearing snow - like in the video - from the very beginning of storms. You don't mess around with the Sierra in Winter! Remember. We lived in Reno in the '60's. I LOVED all the snow, and loved driving in the snow. I don't remember people having snow tires back then. You just had to learn how to drive in the stuff. My father and I got stuck up on the pass coming down from Lake Tahoe. Spent most of the night waiting for the snowplows to open the road. About 5:00 a.m., we got going. We were in a VW bus with bias tires, no chains. The snow was coming down in big flakes but were swirling in all directions - very hypnotic. Had to guess where the road was using the snow sticks as guides - these were little poles sticking up about 6 feet.

Trust me, it can still be an adventure there if you're caught in an early season snow. Working in South Lake one day they said it would snow by 4pm. Finished at 330 thinking I'd beat it. They didn't say it was coming from the east. Fun ride down 50 back to Carson City in an Aveo. NHP stopping people without chains on the way up so they didn't bother me on the way down but even sticking to 35mph, some of the ride wasn't under my own power. Luckily not a lot of traffic mid week.
