Big #waves crash against the coast and into homes as well as businesses in Capitola, #cali. #travel has been difficult to impossible along the passes in the Sierra from heavy snow and icy roads. High #wind causes trees to fall on homes in #sacramento.
    Video locations: Snow shots are along I-80 from Soda Springs to Donner Lake in the Sierra. Flooding shots are from Pescadora and Watsonville, CA. Drone shots of waves are from Carmel, CA. Pier and colorful homes with debris from waves is Capitola, CA. Trees down are from Sacramento and Elk Grove, CA.

    • @richardcoughlin8931
      @richardcoughlin8931 Год назад

      @@dennischampion5635 California is heavily dependent on the snowpack in Sierra for water supplies during the spring and summer months when typically there is no significant rainfall. The rain that comes in during the winter causes flooding along the coast and inland and is a serious problem. But at the same time when it moves up into the mountains and turns into snow, which when it melts it contributes to the water supply for agriculture and urban areas. For the past few decades California has been feast and famine as far as snowfall and water supplies go.

      At our family cabin at the west end of Donner Lake, we have had to dig down through the snow to the second story window to get in. We stopped going when we knew the snow was really deep. And they would have far more snow at the Donner Summit, just a few miles to the west.
      One year in the late 70s or early 80s, 2 older cabins built in the 40s were crushed flat by the weight of the snow, and several more were damaged.

      In 1982 the Alpine Meadows avalanche happened. It snowed so hard for so long they were forced to close down the resort. The situation was uncontrollable. Several people were still there and 7 lost their lives. The avalanche destroyed the summit chair and damaged the main lodge.
      A dog was used to save a human for the very first time.
      I went skiing for my 21st birthday in June that year. There was a big groove cut thru the snowpack so the freakin lift could run to the summit. There was still at least a 60 foot tall pile of snow and avalanche and lumber debris at the bottom of the mountain. It was insane! Respect nature!

      There are certain areas in the Sierras that accumulate more snow than other areas at the same elevation. Donner Summit and the Highway 88 and Highway 4 corriders are good examples. In heavy snow years, they have gotten over 600 inches of snow, and even though the snow settles and gets compacted over the winter months, you can still have over 30 ft. of snow on the ground in the heaviest snowfall areas.

      This is not record setting but given the forecast for another 5' in the next few days and it only being January it's got record potential.
