- Reset Mac password without OS disc and without losing data :
Tutorial for Mac versions 10.6 or lower:
1. Boot into single user mode (press Command-S at power on)
2. Type fsck -fy
3. Type mount -uw /
4. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
5. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/username password, replacing username with the targeted user and password with the desired password.
6. Type exit

First I cant make it work but i realized I should hold command+s before pressing the power on.
Second I was having cannot open remote host
So i search
I typed dscl.passwd/Users and it works thanksss.
Just add space after . and before passwd

When I start with fsck -fy, it begins checking & then stops after the words Checking Catalog Hierarchy.
I never get the report MacIntosh file system seems to be okay like you did. I'm no longer able to type anything. I can't continue on to mount -uw...Page freezes. I have to pull the computer plug to get out of Terminal. Exit won't even type. This has happened a few times. Any thoughts? I really need help. Thanks
I purchased an old mac at a flea market and I dont have the admin or password. The guy has it were I dont have to sign in but I cant remove other that is taking up a lot of my memory. my mac is from 2007 says os x el capitan 10.11.6. how can I either get rid of the admin /password or change it. I can not even get to try and reset since hitting the command r or s dont work. HELP PLEASE. Thanks

great tutorial. my machine was El Capital with locked password acct. followed your tutorial but admin name doesnt show when trying to issue command "ls /Users"
, but my administrator name is administrator, so does that mean that I need to type administrator-admin and then the password 12345 ?
The password 12345 is the one he chose to use. You can chose your own.
Wouldn't you type administrator? Why type administrator -admin?
