when i tried this, that black screen didn't come up. the user icons came up. I did it over and over, and over, I made sure to do it at the same time, or right after, or before, I tried dozens of different things, I watched many videos showing the same reset, and I am doing what they say exactly, and what you said exactly, but still, all I get is a flash for a second of the black screen with white text then goes to the regular user screen. i am holding it down long enough and not letting go. It's a macbook air 2012, A1466. Any advice?
Same device and same issue. Did you find a video that helped you with this issue, command s takes me to a login screen and I tried over and over with this MacBook Air
@sotomayor556 no video but this is what I tried: I ended up going to another laptop to log in with the iCloud account login and then opened keychain and copied down every single password ever used and since we reuse passwords, I figured I would try them to log in to the locked laptop - I was fortunate and one of them worked. Once I was in, I went to settings to users and groups to add a second user profile as a back up, but I got error messages which I forgot exactly what they were now (I have a photo of it somewhere but can't find it now), and then tried other settings menus like the accessibility or other things to do with iCloud, and it was still giving me the error message. I figured that was why the instructions weren't working, because there's some kind of corruption maybe. I googled the error message and followed additional instructions but still no luck, so I realized I will have to back up the laptop, wipe it and start over. I couldn't use the settings menu to back it up at all, so I plugged in an external drive, and it wouldn't even recognize it. Tried different tests, the drive was new, it was recognized on other machines, tried different cables, but still no go. So I bought more iCloud storage (through another device logged into the same iCloud) went through the painful process of manually backing up every file and photo in small batches to the iCloud, and when confident I had it all and could pick it up on another machine, I wiped it and started over. Had a hiccup with the wifi network password not being recognized, which was necessary for downloading the new OS after wiping. I got that finally figured out (another video helped with that particular issue and worked perfectly). Then an amazing thing happened, it was able to download a new OS that was 3 or 4 OS's later. But previously, the unit had said that it couldn't do any more software updates and it was at the latest OS the hardware could handle at the time. But after wiping it, it was able to go from OS 13 to 17. So that confirms my suspicion that there was some kind of corruption before I wiped it. (before that, I did try that "repair" procedure in start up mode but I don't think it helped, if I recall correctly. it may have fixed a couple things but not the major issue). I hope that helps, let me know if you need me to find that picture or that second video. Let me know what ended up working for you, I am curious to learn.
Thank you very much.. Last time same happened to me and i reinstalled the macos as i didn't know this thing.. Same thing happened to me today again and I was about to do the same, then I came up with this video .. Thanks a lot once more..
