The joke about the living statue in the mass grave is either that they killed him and he didn't move, or that he's still alive and they dumped him in there but he's too dedicated to the bit to leave. Either way, amazing writing.

I always loved the musical gags with Timothy Dalton’s character - when he shows up in his car after the first murder he’s listening to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. Then, after the fridge magnate’s house blows up, he’s listening to Fire by Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

This is one of those perfect movies that stands up to multiple rewatches because you catch extra details each time, not to mention all the little bits of behind-the-scenes trivia:
    - Janine is played by Cate Blanchett. Once you know it, you can't unsee those eyes.
    - The Santa that stabs Angel is Peter Jackson (director of the Lord of the Rings movies)
    - DS Andy Wainright is played by Paddy Considine, who you may recognise as King Viserys on House of the Dragon
    - You recognise Rory McCann, who was The Hound on Game of Thrones, as Michael the big supermarket clerk.
    - All the town citizens/NWA are stalwarts of British acting. It's a great trick because as they are all famous to certain degrees, you never quite know who is the villain.
    - The police command at the start get progressively more famous (at the time) as they go up the ranks: Martin Freeman (pre-Hobbit and Sherlock), Steve Coogan and finally, Bill Nighy.
    - Every Chekov's Gun moment is fulfilled - even the sea mine. It's perfect.
The bit of BTS trivia I like the most however is in early versions of the script, they gave Angel a love interest. They decided to scrap the part and gave the lines and plot to Danny (Nick Frost) - making their buddy cop relationship much like a love story.
Bonus: few get the "Forget it Nicholas. It's Sandford." reference, to the movie "Chinatown".

The "you can't make people disappear" - "Yes I can, I am the commissioner" - and then having loads of people "being disappeared by the chief in Sandford" ... is great foreshadowing, but also kinda reality in today's Britain, where people ARE being put into prison for absolutely ridiculous charges while others who have done worse are allowed to roam free, because of their protected class.

There are so many brilliant subtle jokes and callbacks like that in this movie, it's very Edgar Wright. From Angel pointing out the kids hat hiding his face and Danny later saying I couldn't see his face, I'm not made of eyes to the NWA people all being in the same places in the village during the shootout as they were when Angel was jogging earlier or even Danny accidentally shooting the doctor in the foot twice.

One of the biggest comedic elements of this movie is lost on anyone who isn't British, unfortunately. It's based on the stereotype that all British villages are closed societies and everyone who lives there is involved in everyone's business, with village politics and an elite class of self-appointed old people controlling everything. Having experienced it myself I can tell you it's absolutely true. You can't walk into one of these villages without everyone instantly knowing there's a "stranger" in town, every curtain twitches, everyone in the pub stares at you, everyone is suspicious of your motives. It really is like walking into a cult lol

The pub was full of under age drinkers nothing unusual in a country pub, i started going and drinking in pubs at 15, easy and no problem.
I lived in a tiny extreamly remote village in Shropshire and if you hadn't lived in the village for 800 years you would never be locals, but it had a great pub that had lots of Lock In's, late drinking. The locals were nut but in a good way, i was standing at the bar once and the men[farmers) behind me said "its as packed as a sheep dip in here) fantastic, so funny.

Speaking of celebrity cameos, has anyone mentioned that director Peter Jackson is the Santa Claus who stabs him in the hand at the start?

Such a brilliantly written buddy cop comedy. Every line is either a reference, a foreshadowing of something to come or is payoff for something that happened or was mentioned previously.
And don't know if anyone has mentioned but Nicholas's ex is Cate Blanchett (Edgar Wright thought it would be hilarious to have one of the most beautiful actresses covered up in overalls and a mask) and the Santa Claus that stabs him, is actually Peter Jackson who directed the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The fact Nicholas graduated with degrees in Politics and Sociology is a dig at a recruitment approach in the Police from the 2000s, when graduates could go straight into a command position based purely on having a degree. I was in The Job at the time and we did end up with a number of baby-faced Inspectors without a clue about policing who had degrees in sociology, textiles and other equally useless qualifications...they tended to stay in the station and "shine their arses" while us proper cops went out and did the job properly.
Also the scene at Danny's house didn't go down well with test screenings in the US because some people complained it was too homoerotic...

"nobody's going to stab you in here ...not a member of the public anyhow"
Then he gets stabbed by danny
He also tells danny "my notebook's saved my skin more times than i can mention" and its danny in the castle who puts the notebook in angels pocket before he later stabs him then at the reveal he shows the ketchup and says i was saving your skin. Thats sort of just scratching the surface of the number of set ups and payoffs in the movie its kind of mind boggling how many refrences and set it the there are
