True story: My mom hated any film that had women being stalked, so when our family was in a hotel room one night and this movie came on, she decided not to engage at all. She went to read a book. However, during the autopsy scene, she walked past to go to the bathroom, looked at the scene and said, "Is someone making a dress out of human skin?" - She was a seamstress, and recognized the darting cut outs. When us kids saw she was right later in the film, it blew us away.

What I loved about Catherine was that she fought back. I saw this in the theater and the roar of the crowd and applause during the "You don't know what pain is" scene was absolutely amazing. Catherine went against the classic 'damsel in distress' trope - something that I was most grateful for.

"How did he get the pen?!"
Its very subtle, and deliberately done to make it look almost like wizardry, but if you listen carefully its just Hannibal being a genius.
Crawford is furious at Hannibal because he wont give him an answer. Hannibal realises that if he just makes Crawford a little bit angrier, Crawford will storm out of the cell, without his notepad or pen. It works. Barney would then come back in to release Lector from his straitjacket and maybe take away the notepad, missing the pen.

The story was partially inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer, when they finally arrested him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Buffalo bill kidnaps Catherine was also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something into his car so women would offer to help him and then he would hit them over the head and push them into his car.
The character of Buffalo bill was inspired by a few killers like Ed Gein who besides killing 3 people he would dig up recently buried bodies and use them to make things like a pair of gloves and a lampshade made from skin and furniture made from bones and skulls.
I found out recently that the actors who played Bill and Catherine actually dated while making the movie.
Jodie foster said that Hannibal’s lines where he made fun of her accent and shoes were not in the scripts and that she was hurt when he insulted her accent because she had worked hard to perfect a West Virginia accent. She also said that she and Anthony Hopkins didn’t speak at all during filming.

I think it's the shortest screentime of any performance that won a Lead Acting Oscar.
The all-time record for shortest Oscar-winning performance belongs to the great Dame Judi Dench, Best Supporting Actress of 1998, whose three scenes from Shakespeare in Love as Queen Elizabeth I took up no more than eight minutes of the film's 2 hour and 3 minute running time. But what she did in those eight minutes, most actors couldn't pull off in an hour.

For years how Hannibal was able to get the doctor's pen was one of the greatest mysteries in cinema lol. But it seems to be simple , when they showed him focusing on the pen in his cell it's just to demonstrate the carelessness of the doctor. He got the pen sometimes during that day when he was no longer restrained and found a way to pick it up without getting caught. My biggest question to this day is how the hell do you keep a piece of metal in your throat without choking, because I assume they would of checked his mouth prior to moving him lol

    1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real.
    2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released.
    3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film.
    4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice.
    5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in Rambo First Blood II. A great first time/share.
    6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony.

I don't think a lot of people clock that throughout the story, and especially at the end, Clarice had an advantage BECAUSE she was a woman. Bill only let her in the door because she seemed harmless and he was fascinated by women. He thought he could toy with her for information. But finally, in the dark, that fascination was his downfall. If she wasn't a woman, he would have killed her immediately, instead of admiring her up close.

When you made the comment that you thought Clarice was letting Lector control the conversation too much, it made me think a bit. He was controlling it, of course. With hindsight of the rest of the movie, it's another example of showing Clarisse's intelligence. I think a good metaphor of their conversations is two talented swordsmen going at it. Lector is all offense and Clarisse expertly defending(also, performing the difficult tasks he gave her with the anagrams and such) and occasionally pressing him. The respect Clarisse gained from him kept him from wanting to kill her. I think she was smart enough to be honest and forthcoming because she did believe he was truthful about committing to quid-pro-quo, but he wanted real, base emotion.

Up to this point, all serial killers were portrayed as stereotypically mental AF, even if some were cunning/slippery.
The Thomas Harris book was an amazing departure as it depicted someone whose IQ made Einstein/Hawkins look like children, but whose empathy was non-existent.
First popular best seller to really show that sociopathy/psychopathy was independent from intelligence, outside of academic/professional circles.

The Hannibal Lecter sequels to this film were awesome. One of my favorites were Hannibal (2001), directed by the great Ridley Scott and starring none other than Anthony Hopkins with Julianne Moore as Clarice. Featuring a masterful performance by Gary Oldman, with Ray Liotta (RIP). This was followed up by another sequel a year later called Red Dragon. Again, Hannibal Lecter was played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, with all-star cast in Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes. Harvey Keitel was awesome as the blind person who the villain (Fiennes) fell for.
If you like this genre of detective dramas. I would highly recommend True Detective TV series. Fargo also great.

There's so many questions that are answered if you read the book. Unfortunately people who haven't read the book like to try to make stuff up about character's motivations in regard to certain lines or actions. The books are absolutely worth the read!

Even though Sir Anthony Hopkins has quite an extensive career and catalog, this is probably what he is best known for. His impact on the film despite being in it not very long, says quite a lot of his performance. Jodie knocked it out of the park as well and got an Oscar, as did Anthony for supporting actor.

I love the social commentary in the movie because it’s fair. Clarice learns on the job and never feels sorry for herself despite having an uphill battle. At the same time, these cops and detectives risk their lives and very much depend on their coworkers to potentially keep them alive and would be weary of a MALE newcomer, let alone a woman who isn’t fully trained. Clarice also never has some kind of “girl power” moment which allows everybody in the audience - since we have all been in her position of feeling like an outsider - embrace her and relate to her. I think if this movie came out in 2024, all of that would be handled with a much heavier hand and any nuance would be ruined.

Also, Lecter would have safe drops, bug out bags, and secure accounts under various aliases and shell companies. The man is old world nobility and very successful in his own right with lands in France, Maryland USA, Japan, bug primarily Lithuania, particularly the Vilnius area, with estates in Japan, Czechoslovakia, and Denmark. Also holdings in Italy, specifically Florence. Much of his native lands, home, and inheritance were stolen by the USSR "for the good of the people", but the Lecter Family holdings were very widespread and could not be claimed by foreign powers thanks to the wise investment choices of his father, uncle, and aunt. He can fluently speak Deutsche, Danish, Italian, French, Japanese, and English with passing familiarity in Spanish through his understanding of Latin. Jewelry and pearls were toys played with in childhood by his sister and him.

Trivia Fact… 10:12 - 10:57 was similar to how Ted Bundy used to lure his victims to his car. He would wear a fake cast and pretend/ disguise himself as an injured old man needing assistance.

Excellent Reaction !! You quietly listened/watched much much more than you paused & interrupted. Intuitive discussion at the end. It NEVER ever occurred to me, that the body in the tub was old Mrs Littman !! The actual house is in Pennsylvania, I think. It was open as a nice B&B before covid...not sure if the B&B is still in operation. The director, Jonathan Demme, was drawn to the house because of the old abandoned store, seen next to it. He said it reminded him of a face torn off of a head.
