This was Brandon Lee's last film, unfortunately he died tragically while filming and this became his legacy (a high note). He would have made such an impact in Hollywood if he had lived probably along the lines of Keanu Reeves as he was such a humble and educated man. One of my favs and I'm glad that more people are watching this for the spooky season. Fun Fact: the guy who doubled for Lee after he died was Chad Stahelski who later directed the John Wick films.

I loved, in the graphic novel, that he saved Fun Boy for last and gave him a, relatively, merciful death, because he, out of all of them, understood how damned they were and that they deserved to die. “Even Batman doesn’t go to Detroit” 😆 probably fairly accurate! The movie is set in a super gothic interpretation of Detroit because the author of the graphic novel on which this movie is based is from there. And Devil’s Night was an actual thing-not as calculated as in the film, it was more just people setting fires to blighted properties, etc. I remember that being a constant feature on the news the night before Halloween growing up.

'It' can't rain all the time' I was born in '87 and have to say that Brandon Lee's performance has been such an inspiration for me since I first saw the movie in the 90's. Him and the amazing Kevin Conroy who passed away last year were the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background; the vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like them are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)
It's this different kinda pain when someone who was there during your formative years is gone so suddently. PS. Also check out the soundtrack to the Crow; The Cure. Rage Against the Machine, and this beautiful song 'It' can't rain all the time'

The original release had Brandon’s last ever interview included, which included the following:
“Because we do not know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise, perhaps 20, and yet it all seems limitless”.

It was 2 weeks until Brandon Lee and Eliza Huttons marriage when that happened.
The crow used in this movie was actually 2 ravens. One of them was named Joe, I forget what the other one was named. Ravens and crows are equally intelligent and can be trained for cinema, but ravens can be twice as large, and live for more than 25 years...twice as long as crows lifespan. They show up better on film when the lighting is darker. Crow feathers are more blue-black, and ravens have a more brownish tinge to them. Can't tell? Check the head. Crows have a defined silhouette, whereas Ravens have those extra pin feathers that spread down their beaks a bit. Their beaks are also 'thicker' looking and larger. Crows are sociable fellows, who often travel in flocks. Ravens...not so much, though there are usually at least 2 of them together. They recognize human friends...i.e. if you seem like a nice person who doesn't shout at them, and/or sometimes leave food for them, they will show up at your house and have a chat with you about what kind of donuts to buy next time. (I'm not kidding, there's a video of this wild crow and a woman having a literal conversation) They will start to bring you gifts and even money....yeah, they've figured that out....human gives money to someone, they get something in return. Often tasty food! Ergo, bring someone some coins and pay the person to get you a taco, since you lack opposable thumbs and can't pick it up...and other shiny objects. They can have an english vocabulary (slightly less than ravens, who can imitate voices on top of being able to speak in complete sentences. Both species can be assholes, and BOY CAN THEY EVER HOLD A GRUDGE. Crows will divebomb you, and talk s*** about you to your neighbors. Crows though, do ths en masse. Ravens will just cuss you out and then leave. Don't mess with either species, be nice and leave them some corn.
If you still can't tell the difference, the surefire way is to listen to its voice. In this movie, even though the birds are ravens, they were dubbed with crow noises, as most everyone knows what a crow sounds like when they're not yelling "ASSHOLE!!" at you because you won't give them the damn corn. "Caw! Caw! Hwaaaaakkk-kk!" Ravens are less chatty, and the majority of people have not heard them, or mistakenly believe they sound just like crows. No. No they do not. Not at all. Ravens sound like feathered demons from the deepest circles of hell or that chick from the Grudge with the "Aaaa--aaa-uuuh--uukkkkk!!!" noise and it's horrifying.

I was excited to see what he would do with his career, especially the movies where he would showcase his father's martial art. I remember hearing about his death during the making of The Crow and I was in denial for a while. I couldn't believe he was gone. I know he was just a man, but he had so much potential. The Crow is a fitting memorial to him and what he could have been if he had lived. It makes the movie that much more impactful, to know that he died in the making of it. This movie is from a short lived 10 year period of these cool, dark, stylish films. It started in 1989 with Batman then the sequel Batman Returns. Those movies stylistically had a huge impact that lead to the following movies:
    -The Crow
    -The Prophecy
-Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight
    -City of the Lost Children
    -Dark City
and the last of these types of films changed the game and ushered in a new era: The Matrix in 1999. For those 10 years whenever a movie came out that had a feel to it like Batman or this movie I knew I had to see it and I wasn't going to be disappointed. "Devil's Night" is a name associated with October 30, the night before Halloween, in Detroit. While it started in the 1930's/40's with minor pranks, by the early '70's it escalated to more destructive acts such as arson. This primarily took place in the inner city, but surrounding suburbs were often affected as well. The crimes became more destructive in Detroit's inner-city neighborhoods, and included hundreds of acts of arson and vandalism every year. The destruction was worst in the mid- to late-1980s, with more than 800 fires set in 1984, and a number in the hundreds for each subsequent year until 2011. The damage was exacerbated by the severe population decline and widespread abandonment of buildings that occurred in Detroit during the 1970s and 1980s.

    A few things to add:
    1. Heath Ledger took inspiration from The Crow when forming the portrayal of his Joker.
    2. When pro wrestler Steve Borden needed a dark avenger type character for his wrestling gimmick, Scott Hall told him to “watch The Crow”
    3. The scene where Sarah goes to see Eric in the apartment is also a body double.
    - The audio is from a deleted scene as the original screenplay was a direct adaptation of the comic book, however this was of course rewritten and reshot after Brandon’s tragic passing
    4. Sofia Shinas (Shelly’s actress) refused to return for reshoots because of Brandon’s passing, thus leading to further rewriting
    5. Ernie Hudson said he can never bring himself to watch the movie because him and Brandon got to know each other (he also said he will never watch the sequels or remake as, to him, Brandon is The Crow)
    6. The comic was written by James O’Barr and spawned from his fiancée being killed by a drunk driver who ended up serving no time in jail. Like the movie there were many times James stopped and felt he couldn’t finish, but given that this was his way to grieve he pushed through
    7. James O’Barr was a consultant on the remake in the early stages (when Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, and Jason Momoa were attach to star at various points). He stated it was to make a more faithful adaptation to his original comic
    8. James O’Barr was kicked off the project when the remake’s director stated he wanted to go for a “different direction”, making fundamental changes from the source material (comics & movie)
    9. Across all media (comics, novels, movies, and TV) there are 27 unique characters who all become Crows
Lastly, who ever sat through to read all of this, thank you, you’re a trooper. And judging from the last points I made, I’m sure you know my stance on this ‘remake’

It’s a badass movie, but also a beautiful movie. Loved your reaction. So glad yall appreciated the story and the impact it had on us in the 90’s. New sub here.

    "Can't rain all the time..."
I'm not going to talk about the tragic, accidental death of Brandon Lee. It's a complicated matter beyond the scope of this comment. Not wanting to dismiss his death, but I'm sure there are books and videos out there that can explain that tragedy and do it more justice. RIP Brandon Lee.
Fun Fact: One of the ravens used in this film, Magic, was used in all of the following movies.
Authentic Makeup Effect Fact: Alex Proyas said that Brandon Lee was unhappy with the way his face paint looked when the makeup department applied it to him before shooting. Lee and Proyas then agreed that it would look best if Lee applied his own makeup every night before going to bed so that when he woke up his face paint would naturally look more worn out.
Art Through Adversity Fact: Director Alex Proyas originally wanted to shoot the entire movie in "black and white" closer to the comics and only using color in Draven's flash backs scenes with a high contrast theme, but the studio executives didn't allow him to experiment with that approach. This made Proyas shoot much of the movie in a monochromatic color theme mixed with red and dark gray.

Great reaction you two. This movie is classic, and I am saddened that Brandon Lee is no longer with us. It is so sad and I believe he could have been as big or bigger then his dad as star. Both Bruce and Brandon were amazing. Believe it or not this story was written by a man who lost his fiancé and wrote to deal with loss. It is a beautiful story of love and tragedy. Ernie Hudson (amazing actor) as the only good cop was great as his memory is what saved and brought story end as he wanted to bring justice for Eric and Shelly. I love the moral lessons for both men and women. Mother is the word for God on lips and hearts of all children. Also, were Eric said Shelly use to love the trivial things and Eric realized it is the trivial things that truly matter. As husband and wife, it is the little things you do for each other that matter the most.

One of my all time favourite movies. The film and real life reflecting each other kind of adds to the film in a strange bittersweet kind of way. The creator of the original comics, James O'Barr, made the comic as a means of dealing with his grief at losing his fiance to a drunk driver. You really can't make it up, death followed the Crow around since its inception.

One of my most favorite movies ever and because of the incredible soundtrack, "Burn" by The Cure was a milestone when I was learning to play bass. I feel this movie is by far one of the most important movies ever made. The movie is a masterpiece and Brandon Lee sealed his iconic performance with his blood. To imitate art, just as how Eric died (with gunshots to the chest included) just before marrying Shelly, Brandon Lee was tragically killed during the film's production just before he and his fiance, Eliza were about to be married. This is why the film is dedicated to them both.
The accident occurred because a particle from a previous take had remained in the gun's chamber. When the new blank was loaded for the next take, it caused the gun to act like a cannon and it fired the particle into Brandon's chest. He died during surgery.
Because of this accident, the standards for firearm inspection and safety during production were updated and improved so that this would not happen again. Countless actors and crew owe their lives to this film.
If you enjoy The Crow, there is an almost identical story (along with characters) in the film, The Wraith (1986). It's basically The Crow meets Fast and Furious with a glorious amount of 80's "So Bad It's Good" quality.
It also has Charlie Sheen and Clint Howard, and Randy Quaid acting as a tough sheriff. It's fantastic.
I believe there was some connection between the two behind the scenes (possibly the same story or script, but executed differently by studios? It's been a while.) Along with an amazing soundtrack as well, The Wraith also suffered the tragic accidental death of a crew member during filming.

It inspired Heath Ledgers Joker according to Nolan. The soundtrack is awesome as well as the separate score by Graeme Revell. Did you take note that the henchman is the guy who played the original Candyman? I would have loved to show you my version of The Crow character that I have done for quite a few Halloween's because its just easy and well executed. And yes, they filmed this on a ser at Carolco Studios in NC. That club/bar where the band was playing is a perfect set up for what I prefer my favorite bar scene to look like. All the movies, the tv show, all the comics including the crossover with Hack/slash, all the OSTs and scores, posters, clothes, figures, a cosplay, a bust of Eric’s head, and even a book detailing the making of the movie. Fun fact: Michael Wincott (Top Dollar) also voices Death in the Darksiders games, and there was originally some scenes where Michael Berryman (original The Hills Have Eyes movies) was supposed to be a ghostly cowboy serving as a sort of guide, but unfortunately the scenes were cut. Also, Grange (right hand man of Top Dollar, with the glasses) is Tony Todd, who you might recognize from the Candyman films as well as playing the mortician from Final Destination.

It's an amazing movie from a great comic. Brandon's death was tragic. I was a fan of his from his first movie. Eliza Hutton has stayed close with the Lee family. They removed the skeleton cowboy and softened the movie a little after his death, but it doesn't hurt the story at all. The other Crow movies aren't great. I would like to see a proper comic adaptation, but this version will always stand as it's own amazing piece of art.

There was a whole lot to the lore that was shot but edited out of the movie. There was reportedly another character, known as The Cowboy. He acted as a guide. Telling Eric that he was brought back specifically to seek his revenge. When he saved Sarah from getting hit by the car, ThecCowboy tells him that wasnt part of his mission and he takes physical damage on his next fight. That is why, as the movie progresses, you see him bandaged up with electrical tape. Once he gets back on mission, he becomes immune to damage again.
Brandon Lee was killed shooting retakes of him walking in on the rape scene. The actor playing Funboy was the one who fired the faulty prop. He left acting for a long while and never eatched the movie. He died a few years ago and felt responsible for Brandon's death for his entire life.

    A couple things:
    First:
This movie was absolutely life changing, in no small part to the unfortunate death of Brandon. I recall watching it in the theatre, opening day, twice. Read the original graphic novel, too. you'll catch lots of small nods that were put into the film.
    And second:
I would hope one of your patrons or someone else in the comments has already given you the story of Brandon's death, but just in case no one has, here goes:
A great percentage of the film had been completed already, and they were filming pick-up shots, going back to various scenes and redoing some shots for better coverage/angles/etc.
Aside from all the obvious reasons that already make me sad, the particular scene was one of my favorites, and was almost the same in the graphic novel, was with Fun Boy (the junkie who shot himself in the leg) in the scene where he tells the Jesus Christ joke ( _"Can you put me up for the night"?_ ).
It was during one of those extra takes of that scene, where Fun Boy shoots Eric the second time (after the hole-in-the-hand-shot). The gun had a small piece of shrapnel lodged in the barrel and when the blank round went off, it ejected the fragment into Brandon, who passed away later at the hospital.
And, despite what some may say, that specific take is NOT in the movie at all (it was destroyed), so those who say his death was in the movie are lying, or at least ignorant of the truth. Also, it was not an actual complete bullet that was shot from the barrel, so the rumors that he was just shot with a gun firing normal rounds are also incorrect.
Fun Boy actor Michael Massee was the one who fired the gun, and despite the fact that it was not his fault, he carried a massive amount of guilt with him until he died in 2016 from stomach cancer.

I feel like I'm in the minority who actually enjoyed all the Crow sequels too, even though I admit none of them come even close to being nearly as good or fun as this first one. I think The Crow: Salvation is probably the best of all the sequels that really surprised me, though I also would not call it a great movie either. I seriously mourned Brandon's death for weeks while at college, not just as a Bruce Lee fan but a movie fan who greatly loved all Brandon's movies (I especially loved Rapid Fire & Showdown in Little Tokyo was fun) and was expecting more great things from him. Lionsgate is releasing a reboot of The Crow next year, which was in developmental hell for 15 years. Lionsgate, by the way, is also making a reboot of The Highlander franchise with Henry Cavill. That movie was in developmental hell for 17 years. I cannot wait for that. I loved the movies & even much moreso, the 90's TV series! By the way, did you know Stan Lee wanted to make a Shang-Gi movie many years before the MCU and met with Brandon and his mother about him being the lead.

When you look into the events that lead to his death it's almost unbelievable, like specific things had to happen in order for that tragedy to occur all of which could of been prevented.
As far as the reboot goes I really wish they would leave this story alone and move on to another, there's actually a very wide range of other Crows that could be the bases for a new movie.

For anyone who cares. The scene that actually killed Brandon Lee, was not the scene where a lot of people think. A lot of people seem to think it happened during the scene where Eric confronts the huge mob of men and they all start shooting at him. It actually happened during the scene where "Funboy" is goofing around with Sarah's mom, and he shoots Eric multiple times. The actor that played "Funboy" is Michael Masse, and it severely messed with his head for many years. He continued acting in many TV's series and movies afterwards, but admitted in interviews that he had a very hard time getting over the death of Brandon Lee, and that he felt guilty that it was his prop gun that was faulty and ended up killing Brandon Lee. Michael Masse, unfortunately also passed away a few years back. Hopefully he realized in his later years that it wasn't his fault.

The scene was in the flashbacks. The original scene had Eric coming into the apartment when the gang is saying Shelley. Eric was holding a paper bag of groceries with squibs set to go off when Funboy shot him. The squibs went off concealing the actual blood on Brandon so the crew didn't realize what even happened at first
After this happened I actually got a chance to talk to the detective who worked the case. There was a lot of confusion around the nature of Brandon's death at first, so I just called the Wilmington police department and asked to talk to him. I lied and said I was doing research for a college paper and he told me all the details lol.

Brandon died being shot in the pawn shop. The last scene to be shot was the pawn shop, where the shop owner shots him in the chest with a blank. In the test firing, they heard a pop and thought nothing of it, when in fact one of the bullets pushed off into the barrel. Then the director called for a full-load for the scene shot and it was the same as firing a real bullet for the full-load pushing the bullet in the barrel out and killing him.

Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved.
The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film.
On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets.
In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him.
James O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place.
In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that”. Massee died on 20th October 2016 & right up until he passed away, had never watched the film.
Another cast member impacted by Lee’s death was Rochelle Davis who played Sarah. Davis struggled with mental health & substance abuse in the years following the films release; on top of which she spent a period of time homeless. From following her social media, she’s turned her life around & is now making occasional appearances at various conventions.
Also, The Cure, who composed the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film, up until only a few years back refused to play it out of respect.
After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge.
Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well.
Chad Stahelski went on to direct John Wick & I have no doubt that had his friend Brandon Lee not died far too young, he’d have been cast into the role.

This movie is definitely one of kind movie especially since it is Bruce Lee’s only son Brandon Lee who shouldn’t have been taken from this world early at age 28, but both Father & Son lost their lives too soon while Bruce’s & Brandon’s daughter/sister Shannon Lee with mother/wife were left alive. *Following after this first movie came The Crow II: City of Angels then mini tv series THE CROW: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, played by Mark Dacascos while the rest of the movies came out that all had different main actors play “The Crow” role after dying terrible deaths and the story goes on but all the other films within the series aren’t even comparable to the first film or tv series because the concepts and acting are bad.*

Eric would technically be considered a Revenant, an undead spirit that comes back to seek revenge on those who did him or her wrong ( kinda like Jason) and they wont stop until their revenge is completed. They cant die, they can't get physically hurt and they have a bunch of superhuman abilities

I'm convinced that had he lived, Brandon would have played Neo in The Matrix. His kung fu heritage would have made him the only real choice, hands down. But he wasn't around for it, so history went another way. (Ugh, another reboot. They just can't leave anything alone. The Crow was an original story - why can't they come up with another original story?)

In the original comic story by James O'Barr, Eric is even colder and more insane.

They tried to make sequels, and... This is just one of those films that is one and done. It is about as perfect as a comic book adaptation can be. It's a great movie, and its' a tribute to Brandon Lee. A rising star cut down before his time. One wonders what would have been had he continued on this trajectory. The Wachowskis said Brandon Lee would have been their #1 choice for Neo had he still been alive. Imagine that.

This is 1 of my fave movies. The soundtrack is AMAZING! 🎼🎶U get some 80's with THE CURE & Grunge, Alternative from Stone Temple Pilots, 9 Inch Nails! 🎵🎶RIP Brandon Lee.🙏 Such a sweet, humble guy! He had the world to conquer. 🙏😢

    Its basically a perfect movie.
    Objectively speaking.
It may not be to everyones liking but its perfectly scripted, perfectly shot, paced, acted, scored and in the lighting.
As if its not tragic enough what happened to Brandon but on top of that, they make whats virtually a perfect movie and it still cant be allowed to be perfect.
It got an even darker black mark than anything in the prodiction couöd ever have given it.

I read The Crow when the comics came out. I saw the movie when it was released, and bought the soundtrack shortly after. I rewatch the movie frequently, and will be watching it again on Mar. 31st. I have never watched anything else claiming to be "The Crow". For me there is only one. Some things should be sacred, and this movie is one of them. For me, the upcoming reboot is a hard "F*** no!"

This movie came out as I was learning who I was as a Metalhead with Goth leanings. I love it. Loved it the first time I saw it. Framed posters. VHS. DVD. Soundtrack. The works.
And Brandon Lee IS the Crow. He died, and then came back to right the wrong, with the movie about Eric dying and coming back to right the wrong

You wanna hear some crazy coincidences about the deaths of Brandon Lee and and his father, Bruce Lee?
Bruce was still in the middle of filming "Game of Death" when he mysteriously died at the age of 32. In the final release of that film, Bruce Lee plays Billy Lo, an action star, who is shot for real on set by an assassin using a prop gun. In the movie, he then recovers but fakes his death so that he can extract retribution.
Well, it's all coincidence unless you question official narratives, of course.
