Fun fact: Nicholas' "girlfriend" is played by Cate Blanchett. They thought it would be hilarious to cast a beautiful woman and only show her eyeballs. She did it on condition of being uncredited and donated her salary to charity.
Interesting. She seems like she might have a thing for that type of weird cameo role. She was the also the voice (although not the body) of the mysterious woman in Eyes Wide Shut, for instance.
And she was who they thought of when they thought “beautiful”?? Seriously??

“I like that they avoided the swan”

There's no way this is true.... is there?

Reaction edits never include my favorite joke in the whole trilogy:
"He's NOT Judge Judy and executioner!"
I was the only one who laughed at that when I saw it in the theater... Made me sad. Such a good line.
"He IS!! You gotta help me take him down..."
"I can't... He's my Dad"

Thank you for your videos Natalie.
I have severe depression, and one of the nasty things about depression is that you forget what happiness feels like. You remember that a movie or tv show made you feel something, but you forget what that feeling actually felt like. Watching your reaction videos, seeing your emotions, the happiness and the sadness and the surprise and the laughter helps me remember what I felt when I first watched the same movie or tv show.

Hot fuzz is the best of the 3 imo and one of my absolute all time favourite comedies. Re watchable endlessly and never stops being funny
For me, I'd say Shaun of the Dead is the best, and most successful at it's sub-genre. But I'd say Hot Fuzz is the most fun, and the one that's more likely for anyone to enjoy. My favorite is The World's End, though it is the weakest of the three.
I can see why many think that, probably the only reason I prefer to watch SOTD is because I'm also a massive fan of zombie/apocalyptic fiction.
What’s great about this trilogy is that whichever of the three is someone’s favourite, I totally get it. They’re all bangers.
@@SessVlogs I am a huge zombie movie fan and loved shaun of the dead, but actually liked hot fuzz more.

Fun fact Simon Pegg and Nick Frost met because they both had a love for Star Wars and they started doing droid sounds to one another and because they instantly knew the sounds they became the best of friends.
Graham Norton had Pegg and Tom Hanks on and made then compete in a quiz on the original Star Trek.

Heh. Hot Fuzz is just great, and it passes the acid test of a good parody in that it's still funny and works as a cracking story even if you've never seen any of the things it references. Merely icing on the cake.
According to the trivia track, Wright and Pegg took Ebert's book of overused action movie clichés and used it as a checklist for the third act.
There are similarities to the original 'The Wicker Man' which is also Edward Woodward, the neighbourhood watch guy.
When Angel brings the kids in the first night and the desk officer "you arrest the whole town?"
Angel - "Not quite..."
The foreshadowings in these movies are so on point.
a lot like shaun of the dead, act one and act two of hot fuzz follow the same rough series of events. a lot of them use very similar lines to mimic the earlier happening, like being in the shop getting cornettos with "no luck catching them [swans/killers] then?"
I love the bit where Danny and the 3rd cop translate the incomprehensible local dude who has an accent so thick, it takes 2 dudes to translate it for Angel. When I was a kid, my folks went to Ireland and stopped for directions. They could not make out one word of what the local told them. They just thanked him and walked off.

Edgar Wright is a freaking genius when it comes to editing. The man is just a god at it. His quick edits give you all the information you need to know exactly what happened in a span of time without having to spend time on it. His use of jumps to continue the story (you're pulling my leg) etc are perfect. And the star power in this film is kind of insane as well.
I’m a slasher-OF PRICES!
Catch me later!
“My discounts are criminal”
This is definitely where Edgar Wright refined his style. I love how every beat of this movie is basically a parody of modern/90s action movies. It's so entertaining
I've seen this movie probably 20 time, and I've never caught the "pulling my leg" reference at 13:30!
So for some background, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost started out with Edgar Wright as a director back in a series called *Spaced* and Edgar Wright's stuff is absolutely JAM-PACKED with little references. There's a whole version of the show, where there are subtitles just to call out what the references are. This is why his work in *Scott Pilgrim* is just as heavily full of those things in every single scene. When it comes to the cornetto trilogy though, they all go way back, and there's a sort of family-like familiarity between them on their projects where they have a very particular flow that is just... it's why they are what they are.
Michael the Trolley Boy is Rory McCann, aka The Hound, Sandor Clegane. And I love that I can never unsee it!

Natalie, you MUST WATCH "Tucker and Dale Versus Evil!" I don't want to give away spoilers, but you should go into it not even knowing the cast, because you will be so delighted when you see who's in it. It sounds corny due to the title, but I PROMISE you and your subscribers (most of whom have probably not seen it) will love it. Please!
I loved that movie. Hilarious
That is an excellent movie.
Agreed, this is another classic!!!
Yup. And I wouldn´t be so sure about people not knowing it. Because once the title pops up on YT, those who DO know it will swarm. Probably.
She's got a great set ... Of bowling fingers!
I love all of the lowkey sound cues like the cash register cha-ching when Danny hears about Nick being stabbed, the sound plays because he's immediately interested in his experiences. There's so many tiny details like sounds, dialogue, cuts, and placements that just add up into such a fun and fantastic film
Same director did Baby Driver. Lots of similarly interesting sound design aspects.
I’ve never been able to watch Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet in the the same light since the first time I saw this movie! 😂
I love this movie so much. from the writing/direction to the heavy weight casting. Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, former James Bond Timothy Dalton plus cameos from Cate Blanchett (Janine) and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson as the man dressed as Father Christmas
This is not only my favourite of the trilogy, it's also my favourite comedy of all time. The characters are really fun, the action scenes are great, the editing is fantastic, and the script is genuinely really clever. I've watched this film countless times, and I still pick up on so many little references or bits of foreshadowing that I didn't notice before. Looking forward to The World's End reaction now, it's a great and highly underrated film
A Launchpad for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost was the UK TV Sitcom "Spaced",the Cornetto Trilogy used many of the cast (And Director Edgar Wright!) from the show,so it was fun to spot where they showed up..recommended!
Definitely worth a watch.
Yes! One of my all time faves and some of the best pop culture homages ever.
Even the color of the Cornetto is a theme. The red Cornetto in Shaun of the Dead represents blood, the blue Cornetto in Hot Fuzz represents the police, as for The World’s End (spoilers)
I was literally just about to recommend this too!
Spaced is great, but the pacing doesn’t always work for Americans.
I’ve watched it like 20 times and I find new jokes every viewing.
Timothy Dalton being obviously evil is my favourite thing ever.
The scene with him sitting at his desk with the picture of himself on the wall behind him is the best visual gag ever.
For SotD, the humor comes in when you watch the very proper and polite British people try to live through zombies.
Spaced is the TV show the crew all worked on before this, it's a bundle of joy and needs more eyes on it.
Absolutely. It's a must watch. One of my all time favourites.
Spaced is pretty damn close to a perfect thing for me.
^This!
The films are great but _Spaced_ is ... amazing. It's where it all started.
Skinner slipping on the somerfield van and falling on the church roof corner WHICH HE PUSHED OFF ON THE REAL CHURCH IS GENIUS.
It sounds like you’re a fan of Edgar Wright’s direction of these films, I bet you’d enjoy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World if you haven’t seen it.
Oh yes, definitely an interesting one to react to.
Nat should watch it for Canada Day.
Yes! Scott Pilgrim has such a tight direction.
Also Baby Driver
"You wanna be a big cop in a small town, fuck off up to the model village!" 🤣🤣🤣 Kills me every time.
"They're both gonna die because they're annoying" Well, that was accurate :D
I *loved* the fact that Nick Angel originally had a lady love interest in Sandford, but they wrote the character out and gave all her lines -- unmodified -- to Danny Butterman.
Edgar Wright is responsible for the brilliant visual style. For a masterclass in this see "Baby Driver" which he also directed. Great film and the best soundtrack since Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks for another great video! X
This is pretty much a perfect movie. There are no wasted scenes, and it never lags. It sets everything up, gives you the appropriate clues....
...and then blows the entire thing to Hell. It's sheer brilliance.
Literally just finished The World's End an hour ago. It has its moments, especially seeing all the Spaced cast members. Hot Fuzz is the best of the three by far.
The writing in these movies is really great. I wish more screen writers used this dialogue style, especially in certain genres.
"He's fleeing in a police car?! Oh no, that's a felony."
I mean... Also the murders are pretty illegal but sure, felony for running in a police car.
You should watch Paul a well. Different director but love them in it.
‘Paul’ is such a fun movie!
This is my favorite movie. I think I've watched it 10+ times and each time I notice something new!
Edit: I like how Angel rides back into town with two shotguns strapped to his back on a white horse and you say he's a badass bc he has a toothpick!
Wasn't it Skinner who killed Messenger with the spire thing, and in the end he gets impaled by the spire.
damn i never paid attention to that
Yep it’s implied that it’s Skinner considering he was “in the loo” when Tim got killed.
And here I thought I finally caught every setup/payoff in this movie after around 50 viewings.
Whats amazing is there are some well known faces in this like Cate Blanchett's cameo as Jennie and Rory McCann (The Hound in GoT) as Armstrong.
There’s even more brilliance in the Shaun of the Dead script. Adding to what you mentioned about making the plans... the plan Nick says in the bar ends up describing the entire movie.
Have a Bloody Mary in the morning = Zombie named Mary in their garden
Have a couple at the at the princesses = they pick up the bickering couple with shaun’s gf(Princess)
A bite at the Kings head. = they pick up Shaun’s parents where his step dad is bitten at his neck/head
Then bam! Stagger back for shots at the bar
The group pretend to be zombies as they stagger back into the Winchester bar where it all ends with them taking shots...at the zombies with the Winchester
Also when shooting said zombies, the dialogue and camera work directly mirrors the dialogue and video game camera work of the zombie game they are playing in the beginning of the movie
They do that again here. As Nicolas jogs through the village the people he passes are in their positions for the gun fight later. And The World's End does it too!
You've got red on you.
For a couple at the princess I think it's referring to princess Diana, who Liz's Roommate is also called, as Diana and David are the couple
All good except for the game.
While the game does have zombies, it’s nothing more than a nod at gamers.
Same when they mention Tekken 2.
On a side note...
The level nick plays does match the position of the zombies in the end, and also, that in the last shot of the game, his character is almost dead.
And in the zombie shootout, well, Ed gets bitten.
Maybe it’s a stretch, but yeh.
The dialogue for the video game bit is repeated later:
"Top left!"
"Reload"
"Ooh, nice shot!"
Natalie, I recommend "Knives Out" (2019). My pick for the best movie of 2019. Whodunnit with a modern twist and comedy elements and powered with an all-star cast. Very enjoyable.
Superb film
One of the most amazing comedy imo, the way that everything has a payoff and the characters as well as the way that Edgar Wright cuts and edits the footage it's just *chefs kiss
Hot fuzz has been such an underrated movie. I'm glad more and more people are seeing it and loving it!
I highly recommend watching the two-part CinemaWins take on this film. He goes into all of the background stuff you only catch on rewatch.
They play very different characters in each movie... They both have really great ranges actors. Being that they do a lot of comedy they're super underrated.
I love how you and Nicholas had the exact same facial expression at the end of the Romeo and Juliet play lol
"Nothing like a bit of girl on girl." One of the favourite lines in the movie, I just love Olivia Coleman.
The Cornetto trilogy is an Edgar Wright masterpiece, Shaun is my favorite, Pegg and Frost are a fantastic duo.
How is it a trilogy? I don’t think it is
@@Bus_Driver117 it is cause of World's End. But that one sucks IMO
The ending of The World's End was a huge change from the rest of the movie but it's definitely worth the watch. You can't say it has a happy ending like Hot Fuzz but it sure is different.
The thing about the Cornetto Trilogy is that the comedy remains consistently amazing, the quality of the filmmaking goes up throughout (which is amazing considering you're starting from "Shaun of the Dead"), and the writing gets more sophisticated with each iteration, going from a zombie comedy with some social commentary and great character arcs, to a biting commentary on social contract theory, to an exploration of existential philosophy... all hidden in some of the most entertaining movies ever made.
"He's turned into a full-blown badass, he's got a toothpick and everything." Horse: "uh... what?"

This trilogy is supreme.
And I cannot even with the "they're annoying. They'll die."

I agree she needs to do that one next
Yes, great movie
Agreed! Paul is well done!

Paul is the best movie with these 2 in it
I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie as much as I do! I think it's the best of the cornetto films imo. The small town stuff gets me every time. If you grew up in one, you KNOW. :D
My favorite is the 3rd one (World's End) - great films! Cheers
It’s really under-appreciated. I think it’s the funniest and most well written of the three.
Another comedy recommendation, and my personal favourite movie of all time, is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I believe it's Robert Downey Jr's first leading role after his last drug drama but before Iron Man. Him and Val Kilmer have a great dynamic with a lot of very fast intelligent and quick witted dialogue, the writing for the movie is great and it's just a fun spin on a modern LA detective movie.
"Why murder this guy? He doesn't seem that bad." I'm sure there's a very justifiable reason.
For greater goood..
@@1621lionheart The greater Good.
Fun fact:
The creators were considering making a sequel to Shaun of the Dead called Shaun of the Dead: From Dusk Till Shaun, and it would’ve focused on more vampiric horror. Also, it’s called the Cornetto Trilogy as there’s three main flavours of Cornetto, each defined by the colour, red for strawberry symbolising blood and zombies, blue for peanut symbolising police and the law, and green for mint symbolising aliens 🤣
For reference "The Fuzz" is old British slang for the police. Like calling them pigs but meant somewhat less offensively.
Actually, linguists know for certain is that "fuzz" was first used to refer to policemen by criminals in the United States during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
@@GamesandNonsenseUnleashed Really? Interesting. But it certainly caught on in Britain too and seems to have lasted longer there.
@@GriffinPilgrim Yea the hats there seem to have changed les than here.
There's a 1972 Burt Reynolds/Rachel Welch picture called 'Fuzz' about police in Boston. So it was still current in the US then. Guess it went out of style more recently.
We (Brits) got that from the US, a long time ago but it was theirs first.
Q: Is this movie a parody?
A: Yarp.
I think it's more of a lampoon, since it references a genre rather than a specific movie
Woop! Cornetto Trilogy continues.
The winning duo of Pegg and Frost with the cream of British actors, get in (as some of us still say).
Big city cop being sent to rural nowhere is a UK TV trope featuring any British actor you can name. Glad you had fun with this movie.
Timothy Dalton just looks like he was having possibly illegal amounts of fun being in this movie.
Two bits of trivia: 1) the mustache was his idea. He showed up on set with it and Edgar Wright loved it so much he wrote it into the movie. 2) Dalton is such a class act that he showed up on set even when he wasn't being filmed. In case you didn't know, there are a lot of times when only one actor in any given scene is being filmed, and whoever else's lines in the scene are usually read by a production assistant or someone. The other actor is rarely there. Not here. Timothy Dalton showed up _every single time_ to do his lines, even if he wasn't being filmed. Half the time he was there even if he wasn't in the scene. He just enjoyed the production that much. He is _the man!_
So happy that you are doing more of the Cornetto trilogy. Hot Fuzz is the best of them for me, glad you loved it :)
I'm sure it's been said a lot already, but the director (who does that quick cut style that you like) is called Edgar Wright, and he's a genuine genius.
He did all of the Cornetto trilogy, but he also did Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
If you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim vs The World then that should ABSOLUTELY be on your list, it's incredible.

"Decaffeinated?" This was an insta-watch. Such a fantastic film and not just because it was set in my local West Country. Every line is so quoteable and funny that there is so much that these reaction videos have to cut out.
My favorite Nick Frost characters: Santa Claus in Dr Who and Gus in Truth Seekers.
Truth Seekers was really good. Sad there won't be a second season.
Probably Capaldi’s best episode tbh.
British cinema at its finest.
The barn scene was filmed on our family farm here in the States. The studio didn't bring props. They just shot it as is.
If you are digging Simon and Nick comedy, then Paul has to be on the list!
Hot Fuzz definitely my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. So deep in the use of dialogue early on to set up the jokes, and plot payoffs late in the film. Also the use of music was excellent yet again. Especially note the lyrics of the song that plays as Tim Dalton drives by the house that blew up. The first word we hear is "Fire." Such a wonderful detail. And, as Natalie pointed out, the editing and cuts are masterfully done as well. The snappy back and forth at just the right exact moments. Love this film.
The World's End was a good movie, but I found it rather depressing. *no spoilers* but I empathized with Simon Pegg's character so much that it really hit me hard. And still does on rewatches. Another movie that is seriously good, yet also seriously depressing, is Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. Or Dead Poet's Society. Or Moscow on the Hudson. Robin Williams was totally underrated as a dramatic actor.
I probably laughed as much watching your reaction as originally watching the movie. Maybe, someday copyright holders will realize that you're providing free marketing for them. I'm sure lots of people buy or rewatch movies after being reminded how great they are by a great reaction like yours.
So Edgar Wright is definitely the king of match cuts. Every edit is so purposeful and conveys so much! Also the Cornetto Trilogy thing is a reference to a series of French films called Three Colours trilogy about the lives of different people in France. Love the channel! Can't wait to see more, good luck!
"is it a ketchup packet?" when danny gets shot with a shotgun 😂
I have a strong feeling that you will like The World's End.
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are more parody films where The World's End is much more character driven with some incredible performances. I really can't say anymore without spoiling it but when you get around to it I think there will be a lot you'll enjoy. It's definitely Edgar Wright's most mature film and he is in complete control of every moment. I hope you watch it because I'll be interested to see your reaction.
