  • A new three-part series documenting the history of the British Touring Car Championship first Broadcast on ITV4 in February 2014.
    The series tells the inside story of the British Touring Car Championship from the first race on Boxing Day 1957 to the present day. Narrated by Tiff Needell, the three one-hour shows mix evocative archive footage with bespoke interviews with the major protagonists, from drivers to team managers to Murray Walker. Each episode focuses on a different period, shedding fresh light on the legendary drivers, the legendary cars and the legendary moments that have made the BTCC such a success.
    Touring Car Legends has been written and directed by Gaucho Productions Managing Director, Alistair Weaver. “I fell in love with cars watching the Ford RS500’s do battle in the 1980s so this project has been a real treat for me,” he says. “The British Touring Car Championship has always been about the cars and the characters and with the passage of time we’ve been able to tell what really happened in some of the sport’s most memorable moments.”
    John Claridge, Head of Programme Strategy at ITV4, adds: “ITV4 is the home of the British Touring Car Championship and the Touring Car Legends series is an ideal compliment to our coverage of the 2014 season. We’re delighted to be working with Gaucho again on another insightful sports documentary - the show will appeal to both the diehard Touring Car enthusiast and the casual viewer interested in great characters and great racing.”

    10:10, I found Jason's contribution to be extremely inspirational. It shows how tenacious you have to be at times to achieve something you really want. Essentially, he had a very strong belief in his abilities and wasn't prepared to accept an initial no for an answer.
    In some respects, Sir Frank can thank his then personal secretary for slipping her tongue;
    "Look! You're wasting your time. He's not here till lunch-time anyway." :)

      Never liked Muller to be honest - overly arrogant! I respect Plato and Neal - I just dont like Neal! I dont think anyone can doubt Neals beginnings as an independent taking the fight to the factory cars and winning in the series' pomp. I have met Jason Plato at Silverstone whilst he was passing through in his 911, he may come across smug on TV but actually in person he was a thoroughly nice guy.

    I was introduced to the BTCC in the mid-'90s, and always enjoyed it massively! I was a big fan of NASCAR back then, but what sucked me in was clicking through the channels and I saw the Volvo 850 Estate on two wheels and thought to myself "They are racing a f#@king station wagon!! I have GOT to find out more!" And the rest, as they say, was history!

    Jason Plato would be over the 100th race win if he had not been told to follow orders, to let Muller win. Pound for pound Jason Plato is the best BTCC driver by far. He has just had a bad couple of years there, but now with a Vauxhall under him again, he was set to take another couple of wins. But because of being just over the grid box line, it was taken away, Twice this year. Has to be said Plato is just an absalote Legend in his own rite. ✌

      And in 2021 the car was outdated so the best it could do was a podium for him, otherwise it was lagging around the lower end of the top 10. If Plato stays for another year he needs to get himself in a good car, Matt Neal was still winning races up until he took a break last year

      Josh Pemberton I’d love that, start in ginetta’s and work your way up by being offered drives from different teams, and have a championship mode where you can be your favourite driver. It would be even better if it included DTM and V8 supercars as well like the old Toca Race Driver games. If it was codemasters I’d love it if they included all the cars from the late 90’s early 2000’s from the toca touring cars games

      Hey there Si, hope youre good Sir. Its sad that both of us love f1 so much but are both missing something from it. I really like how the drivers in certain disciplines in motorsport play up their rivalries but f1 seems so sterile in comparison. Even if some of it is ridiculous, i used to love watching the 3 Nascar series - until they introduced the stupid splitting the races into 3 segment thing (or 4 at the 600) - i love the passion they show and I managed to see a lot of arguements and some fights. But on top of that, some of the drivers would intentionally play up to the cameras - i dont mean i want it like wwf or wwe or whatever its called, but i little passion goes a long way. The way drivers like D'Ambrosio, Di Grassi, Pic, Chandok (soz for spelling), Di Resta, Algersuari, Hartley, Sirotkin, etc have come and gone and hardly seemed bothered about (in the public eye), it makes me feel like theyre not bothered about it. We need to stick a dayum collective rocket up their asses and not a metaphorical one. We need them to drive like its their last chance - sadly its been and gone for most of them. We need them to care. We need passion in f1! Could you imagine Lewis and Seb throwing punches at each other and then their pit crews charging in to help out??!?!!?
      Anyway, my regular comment buddy, i hope youre doing really well.

    Great anecdote from Jason on his “dealings” with F Williams and didn’t he make a really good decision career wise, body swerving the F1 circus & all the crap that goes with that scenario. I would argue that the majority of real “petrolheads”, given the choice would watch the BTCC racing over contemporary F1. F1, overexposed, overrated and overpaid.

      Totally agree having watched F1 since the 70's when it was horribly dangerous yet a genuine test of car and driver and most importantly of a driver's ability to understand his car and make engine,gearbox and tyres last the race.
      Current F1 where the 'undercut' can win a Grand Prix is a farce.
