- A new three-part series documenting the history of the British Touring Car Championship first Broadcast on ITV4 in February 2014.
The series tells the inside story of the British Touring Car Championship from the first race on Boxing Day 1957 to the present day. Narrated by Tiff Needell, the three one-hour shows mix evocative archive footage with bespoke interviews with the major protagonists, from drivers to team managers to Murray Walker. Each episode focuses on a different period, shedding fresh light on the legendary drivers, the legendary cars and the legendary moments that have made the BTCC such a success.
Touring Car Legends has been written and directed by Gaucho Productions Managing Director, Alistair Weaver. “I fell in love with cars watching the Ford RS500’s do battle in the 1980s so this project has been a real treat for me,” he says. “The British Touring Car Championship has always been about the cars and the characters and with the passage of time we’ve been able to tell what really happened in some of the sport’s most memorable moments.”
John Claridge, Head of Programme Strategy at ITV4, adds: “ITV4 is the home of the British Touring Car Championship and the Touring Car Legends series is an ideal compliment to our coverage of the 2014 season. We’re delighted to be working with Gaucho again on another insightful sports documentary - the show will appeal to both the diehard Touring Car enthusiast and the casual viewer interested in great characters and great racing.” Развлечения
Even in the era of 2000s, I personally feel that in the 90s, those were really the best times. Rally, touring sports and LIFE!
Extremely exciting and entertaining, and made the normal “working class man” feel like we could maybe, one day be in that race 😍😍😍😍👌🏻
I am from Australia and I think it a great Dvd
Great to watch this now after Johnny Smiths interview. Seeing Matt saying he dosent like Plato.
But now there friends and have a good laugh together. Brilliant.
Plate was correct when he said they would end up having a laugh about it. Proper gentleman like that. Massive respect.
10:10, I found Jason's contribution to be extremely inspirational. It shows how tenacious you have to be at times to achieve something you really want. Essentially, he had a very strong belief in his abilities and wasn't prepared to accept an initial no for an answer.
In some respects, Sir Frank can thank his then personal secretary for slipping her tongue;
"Look! You're wasting your time. He's not here till lunch-time anyway." :)
Yep ive got a lot of respect for Plato. Plus he backs it up on the track. Yes he talks the talk but when it matters he does deliver.
Shame he ruins it by being such a smug bellend.
You mean Muller acting like a smug bellend, on the podium and all. That was just beyond childish..
Never liked Muller to be honest - overly arrogant! I respect Plato and Neal - I just dont like Neal! I dont think anyone can doubt Neals beginnings as an independent taking the fight to the factory cars and winning in the series' pomp. I have met Jason Plato at Silverstone whilst he was passing through in his 911, he may come across smug on TV but actually in person he was a thoroughly nice guy.
sonicstep As long as that is all she did !.
I was introduced to the BTCC in the mid-'90s, and always enjoyed it massively! I was a big fan of NASCAR back then, but what sucked me in was clicking through the channels and I saw the Volvo 850 Estate on two wheels and thought to myself "They are racing a f#@king station wagon!! I have GOT to find out more!" And the rest, as they say, was history!
Honda in 2014 also raced in the BTCC with a station wagon based on a Civic
I live in Japan, and I watch BTCC more than DTM. So, Super GT, F1, and BTCC. That's enough fun for a year!
The late '90's btcc era was amazing! It's the backstories that really make it special like Plato's!
I met and sponsored JP after meeting him at Silverstone. Great Guy. Chilled. Multi Dimensional Guy. Hats off
Plato is a legend, just tells it like it is
Loads of goosebumps watching this.
Used to watch it all the time with my dad back between about 90-03
Best memories I have of my dad. Both of us screaming at the TV like it would make a bloody difference 🤣
Good times!
That’s how memories are made, I remember my two grandmothers screaming at the television when the wrestling was on Saturdays all fake but funny many a slipper was lobbed at the box we laughed,,,, I think they are in the ring in the sky still screaming
@@jackkallemdjian3945
🤣 Brilliant!
5 or 10 years after this documentary, they should definitely do another one about how things have changed including the recent rise of Shedden and the introduction of new greats Tom Ingram, Ashley Sutton, Adam Morgan, Sam Tordoff, just to name a few!
@Greaser5550 as a competitive series go this is by far now one of the most competive out there. Racing is good, cars good and drivers good.
@Greaser5550 Did you write this before or after brands?
Get your words, put them on a plate, add some humble pie on that plate, and eat it :-p
@Greaser5550 someone really needs to watch the last race lol
@Greaser5550 90s where you had high downforce processional racing and even Murray walker admitted the races were boring to watch live and only became watchable through editing in the highlights
Super touring was very overrated. Hell they even added pitstops to really spread things out
I saw two st races at donington. Boring as fuck
@Greaser5550 ahhh RUclips. Stay classy
They don't have traction control now.
They did then
Re watching this after Johnny Smith's Interview with the two legends of the modern era. 39:03 is quite foreshadowing. If you haven't watched the interview, do yourself the favour and check it out!
Was just about to say the exact same thing!
Plato is Ronnie O'Sullivan of BTCC. so much better than all the rest just hadn't the cars and luck to win more titles that his talent deserved.
Good call that
His fans are a bit more bearable than Ronnie’s 😅
He's overrated and a cheat.
Nothing more.
Jason Plato would be over the 100th race win if he had not been told to follow orders, to let Muller win. Pound for pound Jason Plato is the best BTCC driver by far. He has just had a bad couple of years there, but now with a Vauxhall under him again, he was set to take another couple of wins. But because of being just over the grid box line, it was taken away, Twice this year. Has to be said Plato is just an absalote Legend in his own rite. ✌
I would say menu was better, he just didnt spend as long in the btcc. And cleland was awesome for vauxhall, could have won a lot more if he wasnt so loyal. But plato top 3-5 for sure
And in 2021 the car was outdated so the best it could do was a podium for him, otherwise it was lagging around the lower end of the top 10. If Plato stays for another year he needs to get himself in a good car, Matt Neal was still winning races up until he took a break last year
I'm getting my ps2 btcc game on now, aahhhh, memories 👍
Jason Plato, legend.
I knew he was good, but had no idea he'd won so many races and held the record for career wins.
Hate him. But he'd be a great top gear host. Fifth gear plus 1
thanks for uploading the entire series. BTCC and V8Supercars is the best racing on earth
James Thompson still reminds me of Gaz Coombes from Supergrass. Talk about 'Moving'.
RIP Murray Walker 1923-2021
Bless him, what a great guy.
Yeah he will be sadly missed
Ive always wondered why ive prefered Plato to Muller and/or Neal. Its suddenly dawned on me. Plato has a personality, Muller has the personality of a golf club and Matt Neal a dayumn plant pot.
Same here, though I was surprised by his admission to making a conscious decision to play up the "bad boy" image. Its good to know he is quite a nice guy (off track, at least). Also loved the revelation about his confrontation with Frank Williams. Must have taken some real guts to do that.
Yup. Plato never took himself too seriously and - most important of all - he's a proper racer. Too many pussies in BTCC, nowadays. The sport is on its arse now, in terms of what it used to be watched for.
Kay Mann, Plato only play by possible borders of rules, and he was better, so no wonders at all. And im heart fan of Honda cars for 30years, and i have luck to drive civics and accords on its no performance reliable versions, and even Rovers and MGs from its Honda days, so even if im seriously Honda triggered, Plato is the MAN. I have only true respect for him.
@@stuartmiller7419 True! it's dead these days. real pity, Matt neal was such a pratt in my eyes, but at the same time he was a character in among other characters and the whole show benefited from him, even tho he was a pratt lol. But ye, not nearly as good nowadays.
@@DAGATHire I agree. It's been sanitised of its USP. No rubbing allowed, no grudges held... it's just 'keep the costs down and drive around and keep the sponsors happy'. I knew it was buggered when they tried to copy F1 by bringing in a mandatory (slow) tyre to negate racing and now discourage all forms of contact. The point has flown over their heads, sorry to say. Sad day when you miss Pratt Neal and he's still in it!
Thanks for uploading.
Honestly as amazing as the Super Touring era was, it was never going to last and I think BTCC is in a better long-term shape now than it ever was.
The first year of the new regulations, in 2001, was truly awful. Literally 6 or 7 hot hatches followed by 12 shopping trolleys getting a head start.
Still the greatest touring car championship ever! Long may it continue!
TOCA 2. Heaven.
9:26 Memories, loved that game loads!
Me too. Fantastic game.
Toca world touring cars one of the best racing games ever
Loved the original Toca game from 1997. Still play it now when the ps4 is on the blink haha. Didn't care much for Toca 2 or Toca World Touring Cars though had all three.
That lava land bonus track and the tank cheat were hours of fun as a kid.
Just thought I've been following the btcc for 24 years .. I'm only 36
Muller was a disgrace for rejecting the handshake from Plato.
Never liked Muller - he wasn't as good as he thought he was.
Especially if Muller knew that he was out of fuel. To have to lie about the situation you must be in the wrong!
I've met and had the misfortune of working with Muller, he is a complete arrogant arsehole just like you see him on TV......
@Greaser5550 I am not saying he is telling the truth, but if you are going to accuse someone of something, in this case, of lying, then you should present some facts to support that accusation.
He wasn't a great driver anyway alain menu was twice the driver muller ever was
R.I.P Jack Sears
Plato is now on 94 or 95 wins, what a shame
Also R.I.P. to Will Hoy, David Leslie. All BTCC legends in their own right.
Is it really necessary to chip that sort of comment in on something that's so entertaining? I'm fed up of it. As it is with my deceased mother and so on, they can't hear us. They are dead and many more, including ourselves will follow. So 'rest in peace' to all of us.!
sonicstep it’s just respectful
RIP Richard Lloyd too, you get a glimpse of his Aki Golf mk1 GTi in part one of the series.
Gordon Shedden, what a top man
Yeah, always remember his charge through the field at Brands GP with the brakes glowing at dusk to clinch the championship, some cars fighting him others waving him by
It was me Jason that found out and told you from the girls on reception that let me know that he was out for lunch but coming back !!! You made us wait and extra two hours as the hole place was on lock down because if you and couldn't collect any vehicles as nothing was aloud to enter or leave sight ..long way back to Leeds now even longer thanks .
John Cleland is a true Scotsman.
Proud to share a nationality with him.
Man's a legend, last race of 1992 was the best BTCC race ever, end of debate.
Think both Neil and Plato could learn a lil bit from Gordon Shedden’s attitude! What a pro!
Shedden is still competitive from what we saw this year compared to Neal last year and Plato this year
"My sons a black belt and very strong so you shouldn't pick a fight with him" HOW OLD ARE YOU
TOMtheLAD your son is black? Damn. He probably has weapons 😮
When I saw your comment before watching I though "what on Earth is this guy on about" but now I am at 37:00 and this is just ridiculous. :D
TOMtheLAD and I am nack
It's TRUE though. Plato reacted like a pussy
He said a black belt of street fighting lol. Basically it was all BS.
We need a massive announcement from like 10 of the biggest car makers - Ford, VW, Kia, BMW, Audi, Nissan, Toyota, Nissan, Peugot, Renault and Volvo that they are going to start from scratch....... and do it properly. Wishes dont come true though.
That Plato bit was pretty cool to watch. Fair play to share that personal bit.
Great story my favourite Jason Plato
That was really interesting, thanks for the upload. Roll on the final 3 BTCC races of 2016 at Brands hatch.
1998 season, Rickard Rydell-my boy!
I've always liked BTCC - I think it's the fact that for the average guy, it could be a realistic aspiration with enough work and commitment.
The Codemasters games were great I still play them both and made reviews of them on my channel.
Need to watch the @thelatebrakeshow chat with both Plato and Neal, very good :-)
39:00 onwards Plato mentions he’ll make up with Neal. They have done recently on the RUclips channel The Late Break Show
Was waiting for a comment about this
Give them a Seat and a Honda and in about 5 laps, normality will be restored.
Can't wait till the next Meet at Knockhill hill in Two weeks, as I will be going to see the BTCC again for the second year now. Got to meet the legend Jason Plato, even got to meet Flash, as he was hosting the hospitality etc, & I gitva wee selfi way him too. Put me meeting Plato up on my channel. But I am well buzzed for it now.
Neal obviously has anger management issues still reflected in the way he's prepared to shove opponents off even now.
Yep, and that's what makes btcc fun to watch. If you want dainty drivers following each other round at 3 second intervals, there is always F1
Renault did start in BTCC with the 19 in 1993, and launched the Laguna in 1994, but in 1995 they teamed up with Williams to create the Williams Renault Laguna, which won the championship in 1997, with Alain Menu.
They did, but they asked williams to build laguna for the '97 season onward. I don't know who build it for the years before.
No Williams did build the Laguna from 1995 and onwards.
@@fontheking5 The design of 95' spec car is still not from Williams, however it's an upgrade of 94 car. But from 96 on the car is completely designed and built by them.
Rip Sir Frank Williams
34:00 that's serious driving how on earth he got that back straight
Bury the throttle and let the front wheels drag you out.
Jason Plato should be the new Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson
Fuck nooooo id actually like to be able to watch it unlike 5th gear where he bores the pants off me 🤦♀️
Whats Bigger British Trouing cars or Australia V8 Supercars ? ?
How many BTCC drivers had a sandwich named after them ??? Is there nothing this guy cannot do, top driver, highly entertaining. Hope he gets back on the front row where he belongs by the end Of this season
Plato is brilliant in this !
Man's a legend, just tells it like it is with absolutely no bullshit
What's with Matt Neal's cheque the numeric is £160, 000. But the alphanumeric says two hundred and fifty thousand
Great video, but big error around 10:00 when mentioning that Plato wasn’t in the first TOCA game. He definitely was, in the blue and yellow Laguna!
Legend
Tarquini never stops racing isn't he. He is one quick old bloke though.
I'd love a BTCC season to return to a game. Sadly, the licensing for that is somewhere unknown.
JakeTV id love a codemasters btcc game, have a career mode where you start off in the support package and work your way up.......and then have modes where you play as any member of the grid.....get some classic cars in as well and drivers
I’d buy ir
Josh Pemberton I’d love that, start in ginetta’s and work your way up by being offered drives from different teams, and have a championship mode where you can be your favourite driver. It would be even better if it included DTM and V8 supercars as well like the old Toca Race Driver games. If it was codemasters I’d love it if they included all the cars from the late 90’s early 2000’s from the toca touring cars games
@@spainobmxer69
The closest we've got to that at the moment is Project Cars. You start off I lower divisions then work your way up
RacingAtHome there should be at least a taste from every era.
ben6993 very true, got it a couple of months ago and I loved starting in ginetta juniors
Murray Walker....made the btcc... pity regulations were favouring fwd's to the faster rwd's..... Next we get F1 fwd_s
It is rivalries like Matt Neal and Jason Plato's that Formula One is lacking, and this is coming from someone who has followed for over 2 decades
Hey there Si, hope youre good Sir. Its sad that both of us love f1 so much but are both missing something from it. I really like how the drivers in certain disciplines in motorsport play up their rivalries but f1 seems so sterile in comparison. Even if some of it is ridiculous, i used to love watching the 3 Nascar series - until they introduced the stupid splitting the races into 3 segment thing (or 4 at the 600) - i love the passion they show and I managed to see a lot of arguements and some fights. But on top of that, some of the drivers would intentionally play up to the cameras - i dont mean i want it like wwf or wwe or whatever its called, but i little passion goes a long way. The way drivers like D'Ambrosio, Di Grassi, Pic, Chandok (soz for spelling), Di Resta, Algersuari, Hartley, Sirotkin, etc have come and gone and hardly seemed bothered about (in the public eye), it makes me feel like theyre not bothered about it. We need to stick a dayum collective rocket up their asses and not a metaphorical one. We need them to drive like its their last chance - sadly its been and gone for most of them. We need them to care. We need passion in f1! Could you imagine Lewis and Seb throwing punches at each other and then their pit crews charging in to help out??!?!!?
Anyway, my regular comment buddy, i hope youre doing really well.
Agreed, no one is jumping from a F1 talking about ripping someone's face off, just thank your sponsor under the watchful eye of your press psychologist. Except Max that is :D
Sons arguing and dads telling eachothers sons to calm down 😂
LOL @ 30:49 what's he gonna do, punch the guys helmet and break his hand?
That TOCA game for PS 1 was my gateway to The BTCC, I can't believe how shit the graphics where now, compared to Forza motorsport 🤑 amazing
I believe the ai in that game is better than forza or gt. Poxy hard game but the main thing I learned from it is codemasters is all that needs to be written on the box to guarantee its a good racing game
@@scottnicholls2523 I honestly had a blast playing it again
Yeah Jason should not have had to move over in the second race in the champ lead. Might be because Muller was considered more high profile. Or like his countryman Prost a bit of cloak and dagger in the pits.
BTCC in the 90s , oh yes
where is the part 2?
where's the Part2 of this documentary guys?
Whatever you say matt silver spoon neal
Adam Khan, whether you think he has a few quid or not, it still takes skill and dedication to win races and be a champion.
No doubt you've won Touring Car races yourself?
Most racedrivers werent born poor
Neal’s dad’s business went out of business and that’s when he started Rimstock. He lost everything and had to build it back up.
Neal and Plato, 2 driving legends, a shame about the hand bags at dawn bullsh*t !
What is the piece of piano music playing at the end?
Jason Plato. Motto. "What, my fault. No way.."
Thats just his on-track persona. He did hold his hands up to a few mistakes in the interviews.
@@phantomechelon3628 Just like me.With this interview. But I forgive him. Ahhh.
I could never decide to be Menu or Plato in TOCA 2 as I thought they were both French. Shows how much I knew. But without TOCA I would never have discovered BTCC and I wonder if they are really aware of the huge influence it had, on the whole world, regarding BTCC. Awesome times. Oh that Laguna!
36:42 that fight scene was like British Soap Opera (ie. Coronation Street,Emmerdale,EastEnders and Hollyoaks)
21:49
I doubt that Mondeo was *THE* most expensive touring car ever made, considering the ITC cars of 1996 were even more advanced.
ProDrive, who built them at the time, said the bill for a brand new car from scratch was £300k
Whata on the meny alan
I wish super touring scenario came back with 9 manafacturesrs and high earning pros ......
I went to a number of races in 1997 and it was a big deal. Earning £800k a driver and £10.5m a season is a hell of lot of money now and it got you a lot back then. Today that would work out with inflation as drivers getting £1.5m and £20m a season in today's money to compete
Could you re-upload part 2 please?
Mat Neal.......Rich kid.........Plato living in the real world !
2nd dan black belt in street fighting 🤣 didn't realise you could get belts in street fighting lmao
Great anecdote from Jason on his “dealings” with F Williams and didn’t he make a really good decision career wise, body swerving the F1 circus & all the crap that goes with that scenario. I would argue that the majority of real “petrolheads”, given the choice would watch the BTCC racing over contemporary F1. F1, overexposed, overrated and overpaid.
Totally agree having watched F1 since the 70's when it was horribly dangerous yet a genuine test of car and driver and most importantly of a driver's ability to understand his car and make engine, gearbox and tyres last the race.
Current F1 where the 'undercut' can win a Grand Prix is a farce.
long live Audi / Volvo
The part 2 of this seems to have been deleted. Could you maybe re-upload it?
Its been taken down by a copyright strike from DUKE Video
Plato did 2001 what established him as a winner...thats racing 100%
Am I correct in saying they made Audi weigh the A4’s down when they were introduced in 1996? I do remember them walking over everyone else at the time!
True, think the organizers put 30kg on them mid season
Dr who reference badwolf? Where do we see the big usa cars vs euro cars?
HOW CAN number 2 be blocked ...... da fuq .......
Mr.been?
the hell is that on Matt's middle finger
Best looking car of them all? Jaguar Mk.1 saloon with wire wheels.
For me it's the Nissan Primera from 1996-1999 I believe?
I was always mondeo fan had spot for 97 mondeo but I loved the 99-2000 mondeo
406 in green with gold flames, unquestionably the most beautiful of all
@@adammclaughlin845 yes I agree that was a great looking car. I think personally 1997 was best year for car liverys

bring back motorsport homologation cars like group a.
The Manufacturers wouldnt bother anymore sadly
pity couldnt watch #2 copyright my bollox
You can find it on Vimeo, it is titled 'touring cars 0001' or something like that. It comes up if you search google for part 2 and sort by videos
Jason Potato... baked potato... lol
so.. less about legends - just the matt neal and plato show
Part 3 of 3, maybe watch the other 2 parts aswell? ;)
God that Audi A4 B5 was sexy!
Jason Plato Better Driver Then Matt Neal ???
And dont forget DTM
39:07 The Late Brake Show AKA The Car Pervert
Hate Matt Neal he is the dirty driver of the grid but a bully too
Zorada this guys clearly a plato fan😂
The
Fraser Hall Plato is just as bad if not worse than Neal - at least Plato has some kind of personality!
Zorada is not a Plato fan. He just can't stand Matt.
Jason Plato is fucking hilarious
Stop playing the victim card in life and blaming others... take ownership of your decisions and drive your own outcomes!!!
Sunday 13th October 2019 BTCC Brands Hatch second race and Neal cynically and deliberately shoves off Colin Turkington who is the main threat to Neal's team mate Dan Cammish.
@Nick Maclachlan It was a shocker,I'm with you 100%,he's a cheat,a liar and whinges when beaten.
@Nick Maclachlan Neal did that to Turkington in the finale about 10 years ago as well, that's all you can expect from him.
Muller was an absolute Rosset
Matt Neal is a little girl and Plato is a better driver and all around talent which has always pissed off Neal and his widdle daddy..Talent is Talent but wants to fight guy will always shunt himself in the end.
Matt neal just needs to realise plato is a far better driver than him
Really, don' see that now
