How to create a MAC OS USB Bootable Drive

- Simple steps on how to make a USB bootable drive for any Mac OS, whether it's OS Sierra, El Capitan, or even OS Lion.
SUDO CODE for Terminal (copy and paste):
* Remember to replace the name USBSTICK with the name of your USB drive!
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/usbstick --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app
This USB bootable drive is useful if you ever need erase your hard drive and reinstall.
To boot up into the USB, make sure the laptop/computer is shut down. Then hold down the OPTIONS key. Press power on the laptop. It will then boot up with a menu showing the USB drive to boot into.
MacBook Pro Specs:
- Early 2011, 2.3 GHz Core i5
- 13.3" 1280x800
- 8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 (Corsair)
- 250GB SSD Hard Drive (Western Digital)
- 384MB Intel HD Graphics 3000
- CD-R SuperDrive
- Mac OS Sierra

Thank you. My daughter brought her 2015 macbook pro home at Christmas. Said it was so slow it was not useful. I was like, I am running windows machines with similar specs on 10 and they are performing well. Suspected her HDD was either slow or dying. Put in a new SSD but restore would only install Yosemite and wouldn't upgrade or connect to support. Created this USB stick with Catalina install. The rest is history, she now has a great backup computer for college that will accompany and support her new ipad Pro. I watched multiple videos that made no sense and were intensive. Glad I found this one, great Job! Another though, maybe she just wanted a new iPad 😂

Any idea why my computer always stops about %75 into boot and never gets to utility. I have tried many times. It also will reboot and restart the whole process. I hvar tried using al capitan , sierra and high sierra and all the same. Could it be hardware issue?

In Your Hand Reviews Apple only makes their latest MacOS available from the App Store, sorry. You’ll have to upgrade to their newest one. It’s still free tho. BUT they changed how the install works and we can no longer create a boot up usb with it anymore 😭 or not that I know of.

Wimbledon Culture The App Store only allows u to download the new OS. It won’t let u download old versions. High Sierra is the new one, so download that 👍

Now what if you want to transfer your music and photos from your HDD to the new SSD?
Well, you can first get a sata to USB cable, plug the SSD to it, then start a time machine on the mac to backup anything that you have had on your previous drive.
If u get an error "not a valid volume mount point" when ur trying to do sudo command, get Mac Os High Sierra installer.

See my comment from today. It's a date issue in the info.plist file in the installer. Not hard to fix.

It says “/Volumes/usbstick is not a valid mount point”. Need help. I changed the name of drive to “usbstick” as well so i can copy paste command, also tried typing it but its the same. “Not a valid mount point”. Need help.
have you tried to go to disk utility and erase and repair the disk?

The password you enter when you first boot up your MacBook. If you don’t have a password then just press enter. If u have multiple accts, then you’ll have to use the one that has administrator access 👍👊

Moe Perez it’s the password you enter when you start your laptop up. If it doesn’t work, then you might not have administrator access cuz it needs admin access to run those commands.

I don't know which passwords it needs
the same password you use to log into your computer at initial start up.
What to do if you don’t have any password?
Just press enter without a password.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I wanted to erase my MacBook 2016 completely and re-install MacOS. Would have been slightly easier to have all the steps in one video, but no biggie.
