Another alternative to lining or facing mentioned below would be to bind the neckline and arm scyes with bias binding. When you mentioned hemming the arms I died inside at the pain of making those curves sit properly! Binding is a great way to get around that without adding much bulk to an edge :)
I’m glad I decided to read the comments before adding one of my own- I would also have suggested bias binding to hem. It’s especially good for thicker fabrics, where you don’t want to double fold and create all that extra bulk. And it is also much easier to manoeuvre around curves. It’s also my go to for hemming circle skirts, especially those of a thicker fabric, but I find even with relatively thin fabric, you end up with a much beater finish using either bias binding, or a hem facing that is cut from the same fabric, but on the same curve as the bottom of the skirt. Much neater and you don’t have to worry about easing that extra fabric in to a double fold, which can get a bit messy at times. Edited to add: Juul Thijssen has a lovely video on producing very neat hems, including for curved bottoms, like on circle skirts (it was her video that got me self-facing for circle skirts). ruclips.net/video/8YD1kra_S1I/видео.html
I was about to comment this as well, specially for hemming the skirt... Using a wider bias tape to bind a circle skirt adds an extra bit of weight to the hem, and that gives it a nice swooshy effect
Just a question : wouldn’t the bind give a bulky neckline, since the fabric looks already thick? (French os my first language so understand english in sewing is kind of new for me!!)
You look so adorable, oh my goodness! I'm obsessed with this pinafore!!! It looks like something I would pay like $60 for on ASOS, so the fact that you made it in one day is incredibly impressive, even with the "sloppy finishes" (that I would have no idea, as a non-seamstress, are sloppy haha). Keep up the cozy sewing content, sweet lady! Much love from a 10-year subscriber ;)
I love hearing your thought process in figuring out how to make another pattern work with your ideas. That is beautiful fabric. I also love the costumes on the show. You probably need to invest in a serger, at least a used one.
I also fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it on the mannequin in the show and thought 'I need that dress in my life!'. You did a wonderful job recreating it. It looks great on you!
Great video! I am thrilled to know that her dress was a dark green and the fact that it is a full circle skirt makes so much sense because of the time period they are supposed to be in. I always regret cutting corners after I do it! I intentionally slowed myself down a couple dresses back to do the work as perfectly as possible. And it was so satisfying. You look amazing in the dress!

I love that you have an old Polish sewing machine! And I need this dress in my life as well!
Good job! You look great!! Just goes to show you that, in fashion, what is old becomes new again. I grew up calling that style a jumper (USA) and it reminds me of the school uniforms of my youth. Twelve years of jumpers and powder blue blouses! I can't go back to that (not w/o therapy!), but it is a very cute style and I love seeing so many younger folks embrace it. Also love your dive in and do it attitude!
Whenever I watch your sewing videos I'm stoked to see that sewing machine. I always think that west of Poland there are only old Singers. Even I own an old Singer instead of Łucznik like my grandma.
I think I like your fabric even better! Very well done. I am always so impressed with the way you just jump in to things you’ve never done before. You help me get over my anxiety from starting new things. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.
You did a beautiful job making that dress love your work please keep sewing you really do inspire me to sew my own clothes am so very happy for you and getting engaged can't wait to see you sew your wedding dress looking forward to it
for a newbie you're really impressive. Doing your all design instead of using pattern. I've been sewing for a while and I'm still reluctant to do my own stuff, and you're doing ity so casually, with very good result as well.
I ended up watching your Celtic studies yesterday and LOVED it. I'd love some more info on your field of specialisation. Maybe you can show footage of hair or clothes styling with you talking about something Celtic related or tape a commentary.
You are brilliant Lucy. You see something you want and you jump in and make it. Great job! BTW, I have watched The Queen's Gambit 3 times now. Love it!
Matching fabric patterns is something I'm still learning but I have found that matching the pattern along the waistline (or draw a line all the way around the project). I use this line as a guide and remember seam allowance when lining it up vertically. With plaids its both easier and harder because as you know garments are not sewn straight but with curves. Hope thus helps and makes some sense. I think you did a wonderful job and it looked great. Also facing the bodice is another option to sems or lining. Keep it up!
I love this! I saw a similar pinafore (different shoulders) in the October issue of Burda style and its been on my mind every since! One in a plaid would be so nice!
It looks so great Loepsie! You’ve gotten so much better at this! I’d love to see a video of you evaluating your own progress one day, you’ve come a long way!
Oh, I clicked on your video thinking you were sewing the Gambit’ s pinafore pattern that is free in peppermint magazine, lol. I have it downloaded but not sewn up yet. You did a great job figuring it out on your own.
Hello, I really liked this dress when I saw it on the show and also wanted to reproduce it.Glad to see that someone got the same idea. Yours look really nice.
I would love a video on the sewing equipment you use plus tools that you use. Also, a video of other RUclips’s that sew that you would recommend. Love this dress!!!!
You can cheat your way out of matching tha patterns by cutting some pieces on cross grain or bias. For example, cutting center back on straight grain and side back on bias. That would require lining to avoid fabric warping tho, but the result is beautiful
with pattern matching it can help to pay attention to the notches. take the piece that you've already cut out, fold back the seam allowance and put a pin where your notches are so you can see them from the font, place it over the fabric you're about to cut out so the pattern lines up, and then place the paper pattern piece on the uncut fabric so the notches line up.
That turned out so well! It looks incredible! I love the idea of using a waistcoat pattern for the bodice, I might have to steal that idea for when I make this myself - I basically manifested at my local fabric store the minute I first saw the dress (didn't we all?), but haven't had the time to sit down with it yet. :D
for the bodice, another option from lining would be facings. that would have finished your edges without any stitching on top. did you clip your seams on the curve of the breast on the princess seams? looks like they aren't quite laying as flat as they should?
Here to second the facings option. Facings are the way to go with one-layer garments. Could also cover the raw edges with a small tape and topstitch for a cleaner finish.
Just binge watched the whole series this night #sosleepdeprived# 🙈 So hilarious to see they filmed the scenes with the old chess players on the street in Russia actually in my street in Berlin 😄
I struggled with pattern matching too, but here's a tip! If you're using a pattern, there will be markings on it called "notches." Trace them on the fabric with chalk or transfer paper. Then you line one notch to the notch of the next piece (if that makes sense). Hope that helps!
Great job!! I think as far as finishing goes it doesn’t need to be too intense considering your fabric and intended use. I’d probly have gone crazy and bias bound everything 😂 Enjoy your new beautiful dress!!
I love how this turned out! I noticed some struggle you had with your scissors, probably because the fabric is so thick. I recommend Gingher scissors, I love my set! ❤️
I loove this dress you did such a good job and it was such a good idea to use your waistcoat pattern! Such a beautiful end product! Also you're improving so much with every project! I'm a rookie myself and you give me a lot of inspo! I wonder if facing would have been good for your bodice finishing?
Great style and always admire your courage in jumping in to quite difficult projects! I think you would have to pattern match when planning your pattern pieces, it's quite a skill (my daughter trained as a seamstress and made many tartan garments with pattern matching!). Also, the lining and hem are to stabilise the dress - back in time, this garment would rarely have been washed and the lining protects from wear, too, it's not just about warmth. And the hem, especially on a heavier fabric, adds weight to the lower edge over the underskirt and/or lining to make it hang well; I learnt from my grandmother and mom that you let a skirt hang for a few days before hemming so that it will be even. Nowadays probably nobody really cares or checks to see if your hem is even lol.
So cute! I don't think you should worry about the color at all. Hopefully, you love it in the color you chose, and if it looks black in the show except in one scene, it might as well be black!
It turned out great! The pattern not matching at the princess seams isn’t noticeable because of the angle of the bust line, it would be more obvious if it was a flat part of the skirt. You look lovely and it’s so flattering on you 😊
I really love these TV inspired oufits! You do a great job making your own! Have you seen Jingle Jangle on Netflix? I wonder if a Christmas outfit would be fun to try with the colors, patterns and textures from the show.
I fell in love with that dress when I watched Queens Gambit!!!

Yes a bias binding or a facing on the armholes are both easier than trying to turn under that concave curve.
Just a question : wouldn’t the bind give a bulky neckline, since the fabric looks already thick? (French os my first language so understand english in sewing is kind of new for me!!)
@@Mariannepiano Not really because bias binding is usually a lighter weight fabric so it's less bulky than the plaid fabric she used for the dress.
You look so adorable, oh my goodness! I'm obsessed with this pinafore!!! It looks great! In the future of you don't want to line a bodice, you can always make facings instead. It's so swooshy and looks great on you! 😊
I love hearing your thought process in figuring out how to make another pattern work with your ideas. That is beautiful fabric. I also love the costumes on the show. You probably need to invest in a serger, at least a used one.
When I saw the dress in the episode, I paused and spent an hour trying to find similar dresses because it's sooooo beautiful
I also fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it on the mannequin in the show and thought 'I need that dress in my life!'. You did a wonderful job recreating it. It looks great on you!

Beautiful pinafore. Like you, the thing I like best about "The Queen's Gambit" are the wonderful clothes.

Does it count when I brought it over from -very much not west of Poland-? 😜
I think I like your fabric even better! Very well done. I am always so impressed with the way you just jump in to things you’ve never done before. You help me get over my anxiety from starting new things. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.
I am very impressed. I also loved The Queen's Gambit and her wardrobe was to die for!
So cute! Seam binding is your magic helper.
That looks incredible! Watching your sewing journey is so lovely. Also glad I'm not the only one who started The Queen's Gambit for the costuming.
You did a beautiful job making that dress love your work please keep sewing you really do inspire me to sew my own clothes am so very happy for you and getting engaged can't wait to see you sew your wedding dress looking forward to it

You have done so well and it looks fabulous on you.
We need a hair and makeup tutorial of Beth now 🥰

I LOVE IT SOO MUCH😍 You inspired me to be brave and to alter patterns by myself!
I love this! I saw a similar pinafore (different shoulders) in the October issue of Burda style and its been on my mind every since! One in a plaid would be so nice!
That shirt goes so great with your new beautiful pinafore!!!
It looks so great Loepsie! You’ve gotten so much better at this! I’d love to see a video of you evaluating your own progress one day, you’ve come a long way!
Beautiful !! Lovely colors and shape.
So clever and this 59 year old seamstress wannabe is so impressed with you!
you can do it!!!!
I'm a 57 YO dad and started sewing clothes for my teenage daughter about 2 yrs ago. I have leaned so much from RUclips and you can too!
Wow! It turned out so beautiful.
Oh, I clicked on your video thinking you were sewing the Gambit’ s pinafore pattern that is free in peppermint magazine, lol. I have it downloaded but not sewn up yet. You did a great job figuring it out on your own.

How genius work so simple for humans like us who are magically and unnaturally obsessed with art

When u say hey guys.. Welcome to a new video...It's very sweet of u❤️
Absolutely love how it turned out ❤️ It fits you so well
I'm amazed how well that turned out O_O It's really beautiful, well done!

It turned out super cute!

I instantly wanted the dress too!
Absolutely beautiful! I love how it turned out!
I love that pattern!
I literally just ordered fabric to make this exact dress just before I saw this video😂. You did an amazing job, it looks gorgeous!
You look so pretty in that dress, as soon as I saw you wearing it I smiled.
It looks so adorable on you~! 💖💖💖💖💖 Great work on it~!
Amaaaahzing! And I love the music! You are a phenom!
oh my god i waited for this video, i watched the queen's gambit in one day and i fell in love with her outfits.

Nice job! You should make the black and white ‘Russia” dress!!!
Great job!! I think as far as finishing goes it doesn’t need to be too intense considering your fabric and intended use. I’d probly have gone crazy and bias bound everything 😂 Enjoy your new beautiful dress!!
You've made me fall back in love with making clothing! I so want to make this, it's beautiful! 😍
Very cute! Well done!
I love how this turned out! I noticed some struggle you had with your scissors, probably because the fabric is so thick. I recommend Gingher scissors, I love my set! ❤️
That is SO cute on you! Love it!!
So beautiful! I might just have to have one of those. I might just HAVE to have one. But I don't have the material. Darn. Fabric shopping it is.
Hey I love your (new?) haircut and job well done on the dress! Queens Gambit was so addictive.
omg i was just looking for patterns for this pinafore last night!
Oh yeah! There are so many good ones (especially from the time period). I am doing one now that is a 1940's pinafore base on this show.
I love your videos. Will be sure to check out the The Queens Gambit soon.
I loove this dress you did such a good job and it was such a good idea to use your waistcoat pattern! Such a beautiful end product! Also you're improving so much with every project! I loved. You are very inspiring. Just do it💪
I love the dress
Facing is my go to when i don't want to line my garment. But this is absolutely lovely.
Also! Welcome to the "i made a full dress in one day" club. ♡ happy to have you here.
I loved the movie; I love your dress.
So cute! I don't think you should worry about the color at all. Hopefully, you love it in the color you chose, and if it looks black in the show except in one scene, it might as well be black!
A worthy investment would be some proper fabric scissors it makes the process so much better! They can last you a life time if you look after them ☺️
so excited to see this!
i just finished the series and I really like that dress
How is your wedding dress coming? Just curious.
Slowly 😂 I have my fabric and a good idea of how I want to make it, but I'm yet to produce the first mockup
You really should start already! Time is always a constraint, so the earlier you begin the better.
Beautiful! I’m going to make something similar, so this is helpful.❤
It's sooo beautiful ❤️
Arguably, I think I like the material that you chose better than the one you based the look off of. Good choice!!
It turned out great! The pattern not matching at the princess seams isn’t noticeable because of the angle of the bust line, it would be more obvious if it was a flat part of the skirt. You look lovely and it’s so flattering on you 😊
I haven’t even seen this show but I really want to sew this! 😩 I can’t wait!
Plaid looks so cute on you!
Wauw! Looks beautiful!!!
I love the hard work you put in every video ❤️ The color and fit is great ❤️ and You look more cute in short hair ❤️
Hi!! Great job! What is the type of fabric please?
looks great
Love it ! Id like to do a dress like that soon!
I really love these TV inspired oufits! You do a great job making your own! Have you seen Jingle Jangle on Netflix? I wonder if a Christmas outfit would be fun to try with the colors, patterns and textures from the show.
Such a fun idea!
Do you think having the dress form is helping with speed and fit?
