Hi guys!!! Sorry about the weird audio around 14 minutes. I had the ceiling fan on in the sunroom and didn't realize that the wind was strong enough to mess up my mic 😂🙈 I'll make sure to shut it off next time, my bad! If it's really bugging you, I do have subtitles for the video if you'd rather just turn the audio down 🙏
I started watching Bernadette because she speaks to the perfectionist in me and shows how to ensure something is made perfect. But! Watching your videos reminds me that I need to keep it lose and not worry too much about things being perfect because otherwise I’ll never learn how to sew by just fantasizing about making something. And now I’ve actually made a couple things!
Hi friends! I'm right there with you! I used to sew when I was a kid but I stopped years ago. After watching Bernadette and Rachel, I decided to pick it back up during the quarantine. I also bought myself a [modern] sewing machine to help the process a bit. It's been so much fun to try my hand at making clothes and stuffed animals; I'm so grateful to Bernadette and Rachel for inspiring me to get back into this hobby. I wish you all the best with your sewing adventures!! ☺️
@8bit Ramen Even if you have been sewing for years there is always something that is going to make you feel like a newbie, I think. But the feeling of adventure is great too. I am doing free sewing atm where I incorporate breaking rules and "mistakes" like wrong side out etc into the final project. I feel very creative with it and am having fun, and I try to make it where I really enjoy each finished piece. But the one I have to start atm has to be more disciplined again or it is not going to work right (because like you are trying to do, it is a historical one.)
I loved the casualness of the format, felt super old-friends popping in without knocking vibes and that’s the kind of content I’ve been craving lately-casual social interactions. Thank you for that!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Good God I think that might actually be the most truthful thing. Ever. And applicable to my life so.... thank you, Miss Rachel, relatable goddess of vintage adorability.
Rachel: I wasn't feeling very creative Also Rachel: *Makes two garments in a day* Me: what. All jokes aside, you've really managed to brighten up my quarantine with your awesome sense of humor and fun, nerdy ramblings. Love you and your vids and Frodo of course!
I was literally about to make the same comment about Rachel not feeling creative but then making two dresses in a day. 😂 Rachel *not feeling creative* makes two pieces of clothing.. Me *not feeling creative* continues being an absolute couch potato 🥔
So totally agree with you about. "Just do it". I started sewing when I was 40, because I needed a costume and could not buy what I needed. No seam finishes, no real idea what I was doing, but it worked. 20 years later, I'm still sewing and enjoying it. The nieces and nephews love visiting, as I have hundreds of kids costumes that they get to play with. Happy sewing.
The best trick I've ever learned for hemming circle skirts is to use bias tape. It's so much easier than trying to get a hem turned up smoothly and evenly!
Agreed. Staring at a piece of new, even cheap or repurposed fabric still makes me unreasonably nervous. But I’ve made some terrible choices in cheap thrift clothing I thought I could alter. The simplest alteration is shortening a hem, on a non-stretch, non slippery fabric like cotton or denim. Adding pockets into the side hem of a skirt is also pretty simple, and the sense of accomplishment is excellent. Taking a too small garment and making it larger, while it is sometimes possible, is an advanced project. Entirely shrinking an oversized garment is less difficult, but a frustrating place to start. Shortening skirts from the waist band is possible, but shortening from them hem is almost always easier. Taking in a gathered waist on a skirt is simple. Taking in the waist or a dress is do-able with darts, but you’re better off with a second person to pin it to your size. Slippery, silky fabrics can be frustrating. Sheer overlay fabrics require specialized, although not necessarily difficult, techniques. Stretch fabrics, including t-shirts are sometimes frustrating, but, start with a T-shirt that isn’t your favourite, and if it goes less than awesome, it’s a very cheap mistake.

Frodo has mastered staying out of frame with that army crawl, it's like when you run crouched over in front of the screen someone's watching. LIKE I WAS NEVER HERE.
@@carolharper1241 I am new to tailoring, so have just started using iron on interfacing. The book I got on tailoring is from 1982, written by 2 ladies, and I think it is Easy Tailoring. It shows how iron-on interfacing, like pellon, in different weights, really changed the traditional tailoring by making it faster and doable by regular seamstresses. I am starting to use it to fix a seam before sewing (iron-on sew-through type) or wonder tape tape baste washable type (harder for me to mess with so far.) I was sure my interfacing wasn't going to work for me at first, but using parchment paper so it won't stick, making sure everything is well steamed or damp, and not moving the iron work well for me now. My book helped me pick which fabrics work best with that easy method ad which weight to use for which fabric and project. Like hair canvas for a coat, for instance. But for this hobbit type project she can also look on her pattern to find the weight of the interfacing. For a vintage pattern you might have to ask on here to get the right weight to substitute your iron on interfacing. the book said some fabrics you can iron directly on the back of your fashion fabric. But there are some tricks to that, so another safe way to add it is to iron on to your lining.
Rachel: "I think I'm going to do a side zipper!" Me: "Oh lawd, why would you do that? Side zippers are the devil!" Rachel: "Even though side zippers are the devil." >_< Everything turned out so lovely!
@@SugiyamaHiromin I've only ever done a side zipper on a skirt which wasn't so bad. Press the 2 sides flat in line with the rest of the seam and it stays pretty straight.
I don't usually comment but you talking about feedback made me decide to just tell you this. I do watch your videos pretty regularly, (though I never go in order)I tend to go to you when I'm upset, reliving bad memories, overwhelmed, whatever. I do that because you manage to pull me in and or out of whatever was in my mind and make me feel better. I can watch you and just get away from those feelings. So that's important to me and you're very special.
"I'm a Ravenclaw" *5 minutes later* "I wouldn't want to live in the Harry Potter universe because I don't want to go to school." (I know intelligence and formal education aren't the same but I chuckled lol)
I watched this while drinking coffee, listening to the rain, and doing some hand-sewing on a hobbit-style skirt I'm making. So it was an awesome experience. I loved the video.
Me: *I am feeling super creative and productive* makes one tiny easy project Rachel : *I am not feeling very productive* makes two amazing garments and smiles cutely
I love all your videos! You crack me up, and do cool and inspiring things! And Frodo is so adorable. Everyone loves Jane Austen, no one loves Thackeray. "Vanity Fair" is SO much better than the "this and that" formulaic works of Austen.
The way I met by bff: we were at an SCA meeting, she was new to our group. She said "man, I need to sew, badly", and I piped up, "I can sew badly!", and we've been pals ever since!
I love you Rachel, I took two sewing classes in High School, how ever my new sewing machine, I got in 2014. The year after my father passed away, in 2013. As it turns out, I did not get a single present, that year, not even for my birthday, or Christmas, or any holiday which you traditionally get a some kind of a gift for,..! So in the first week of Jan 2014, my mother asked me, what I would like, to make up for all of that lack of gift giving. I had a choice, either a sewing machine, with all accessories, or a trip to Italy to visit my best friend,..? That was an easy one, I choose, the sewing machine, because I knew it would keep my mind busy, and help me to get over, my father passing away. It worked.
Seeing you buy vintage sewing patterns to make your own clothes inspired me to buy vintage patterns of my own to make my 80s wardrobe dreams come true! So thanks, Rachel!
Whenever I watch one of Rachel's videos I have an overwhelming urge to get my sewing machine out. I shall be going t the fabric shop when it re-opens x
I absolutely love that you're not a perfectionist or follow all the proper methods and directions and conventions. Girl. I'm 100% that way. I am passionate about native plants and spreading that love to Florida suburbanites in their gardens. My style of garden and life is NATURALISTIC. So even though I probably won't sew, I thoroughly enjoy watching you videos. I will probably get my mom to make me a proper split leg garden apron. She's made me a couple of poly fabrics and I would love an upcycled natural fiber with so many pockets. That's what you're making me think about
Rachel: I don't feel very creative and motivated right now so I'm just going to make a COMPLETE dress and a corset vest in 2 days while answering fans Q&A and pump out a RUclips video Me: I don't feel very motivated or creative right now , so I'm just going to sleep, eat, binge watching RUclips and repeat this weekend.... Lol, what?!?! I can't even make a decent looking clothing item even though watching your, Bernadette, and Meme Mom channels make me really want to start making things cuz I love vintage dresses and I always like long and midi dresses anyway...
RUclipsrs like you are giving me life 🥰 I haven't sewn since last April because I failed pretty badly at sewing masks 😷 They were too tight or too big or too narrow. Killed my desire to sew anything. Seeing your casual sewing gives me some inspiration and courage to try again 😄
I keep my dog off of my fabric by getting out her dresses or costumes and putting them around the fabric and she chooses to lay down as far away as possible 😂
I just have to say i love that you don’t put a huge emphasis on historical accuracy. I love aspects of historical clothing but some things i just don’t like. The idea of mashing different eras together to match my aesthetics was always nerve wracking so this makes me so happy!
I feel like the community you're building here is very welcoming to weird gremlins who need a little motivation to just do it. Also, Frodo is adorable and I'm glad you're keeping him grounded from all his well-earned fame.
I'm a fashion student right now and it was really inspiring to watch you make those really nice garments and the final looks were amazing thanks for also a laughable video always in a good way 🥰
I love tiny house shows, Ive planned to retire in one. Of course I has assumed that id be alone, but now I seem to have found my intended SO in middle age. So for now I am enjoying his 1920s house that I am moving into, in the future who knows? Have you watched Hollywood on Netflix yet? Lots of vintage goodness.
I'm so in love with both of these! Also hemming circle skirts is the absolute worst, but I found that using the bias binding method of a hem makes it so much more bearable
I really really appreciate these kinda chatting and sewing videos♡ I do a lot of hand sewing, so being able to work while listening to you reminds me of sitting with friends while sewing. (Plus your projects are cool and inspire me to get off my butt and make more things for myself.) Thanks for letting me hang out with you! XD
Rachel, your content my new relax time. I'm studying for PhD exams and very stressed. Your mood plus pretty things plus remembering I have craft hobbies and can return to them after this is the hope I need. Thank you!
I’ve been sewing since I was 10 (& I am Hella old) and I have to say, you are just FEARLESS with the projects you take on. I admire you and cower at the thought of some of the amazing stuff you do. You make me want to be a whole lot braver with my machine and make my Grandma proud, as she left it to me when she passed away, beautiful vintage 1959 Viking.
I love your videos so much! You've inspired me to finally start sewing my own clothes and try to finally realize my own aesthetic of vintage/cottagegore. One tip I learned (by watching one of my other favorite seamstressea on youtbe, Gertie) for sewing hems more neatly is to run a stich a quarter inch all the way around the edge of the area you're hemming and use it as a consistent guide for pressing and pinning a double fold hem. You can use the edge of the presser foot as a guide and that way you can get a nice even double fold hem without getting out any extra tools.
Hey, great video! 💕 I love the hobbit-like dresses! As a Taylor, I have a great and easy trick for the seam: sew with a large stich one cm (or how wide you want the seam to be) away from the edge of the fabric. The "nice side of the fabric" is facing down as you fold the fabric at the stitches line and fold again so that the edge of the fabric is covered. Then sew over it, done! 😊 You will get a very nice seam. If you have a rounded seam like here in the video I advise you to first pull one thread a little before folding. Then it lies nice and flat for stitching. I hope you can understand my explanation 😁😊 Have a nice day 🤗
I just started sobbing seeing this in my feed bc I just appreciate your consistency and wholesomeness so much, right now especially when the world kind of feels like it's falling apart. Thanks for hugging my heart through making and sharing this, Rachel ❤
I've been binging your videos and felt like I had to stop and comment on what you said here about hoping that your content could help people in some way. I can attest that your videos have that desired effect! Truthfully, discovering your channel has been one of the highlights that has made this year bearable. You've inspired me to lean into my whimsical and crafty interests and have the courage just to have a style that's different from the norm. Your aesthetics and sense of humor give me LIFE. Like you like to say, we DO have fun here, and I guess I just wanted to thank you for that ❤✨

I just had your video in the background while finally finished my knitting project. It's so nice to hear you talk about how to just start sewing. Like of you never start you can never learn and become better.
I loved this format! So fun an casual. Felt like I was hanging out with a friend chatting. I binge on your videos all the time and my faves are always the chatty ones, no matter what you're doing 🤗 The vest and dress look awesome! I'm inspired to sew something today 😍🤗

The sadness in Rachel’s eyes when she said she has no donut at 1:22 :’(
I feel you Rachel; I feel you.
Whenever I am sewing or crafting, I usually put on one of your crafting videos in the background, because it kinda feels like I’m having a crafting party! Thank you for making your videos, they always make me smile!
Frodo has mastered staying out of frame with that army crawl, it's like when you run crouched over in front of the screen someone's watching. LIKE I WAS NEVER HERE.
TIP: Don't skip the interfacing, lightweight even makes a difference in how your garment fits, and how the fabric lays.
Curious to what you use for interfacing? Super new to sewing
@@carolharper1241 I’d like to know as well
@@Eponine_Sandon you can buy interfacing which is like a stiff plan fabric...that's what I use in Australia
@@pbd7168 and you can buy it at the fabric store?
Your channel is one of my favorites. You don’t take yourself too seriously and have fun with the whole process.
Rachel: I'm just a lowly RUclipsr
Me: But...but...but you're like a celebrity to me. One of the Queens of Costuming!
Same!
Karolina, Bernadette, Rachel, and Micarah
Rachel: "I think I'm going to do a side zipper!"
Me: "Oh lawd, why would you do that? Side zippers are the devil!"
Rachel: "Even though side zippers are the devil."
>_<
Everything turned out so lovely!
I tried side zipper once. Back zipper team forever.
@@SugiyamaHiromin I've only ever done a side zipper on a skirt which wasn't so bad. Press the 2 sides flat in line with the rest of the seam and it stays pretty straight.
@@Forobryt It´s easier on a skirt but on a dress, it´s another story.
Honestly I don't mind side zippers. I've not had any extra problems with them, as compared to back zippers.
Mr Collins is all "ahhh yes, ladies always must do a 'finger guns' rejection first before accepting, you'll say yes later"
Me: *I am feeling super creative and productive* makes one tiny easy project
Rachel : *I am not feeling very productive* makes two amazing garments and smiles cutely
Sewing a bustle while watching Rachel sew with me during quarantine? Perfection.
Thanks for the videos and inspiration, Rachel!
YES ELIZABETH’s dress gives me life!!! I want it soooo bad!!! Please record that process. I’d love to see that.
🤗🤗🤗
I love you, I’m hoping for an antique collection show and tell thingy and a home tour soon. 😍
Hehee definitely in the future! Got a few things to fix up in the house before I do that 🤗🤗
Whenever I watch one of Rachel's videos I have an overwhelming urge to get my sewing machine out. I shall be going t the fabric shop when it re-opens x
I love that you film in your house. It's such a nice atmosphere and your animals are so cute.
Your home matches your earthy vibes
I absolutely love that you're not a perfectionist or follow all the proper methods and directions and conventions. Girl. I'm 100% that way. I am passionate about native plants and spreading that love to Florida suburbanites in their gardens. My style of garden and life is NATURALISTIC. So even though I probably won't sew, I thoroughly enjoy watching you videos. I will probably get my mom to make me a proper split leg garden apron. She's made me a couple of poly fabrics and I would love an upcycled natural fiber with so many pockets. That's what you're making me think about
The sadness when you finished the Donut, I feel you 😫🤣
😭😭😭😭
A single donut was the mistake 🤪 what also cracked me up is kinda cleaning hands on the dress lol
I love how you ended up making a new favorite item and you weren’t even initially feeling creative :) just do it proof
Rachel: I don't feel very creative and motivated right now so I'm just going to make a COMPLETE dress and a corset vest in 2 days while answering fans Q&A and pump out a RUclips video
Me: I don't feel very motivated or creative right now , so I'm just going to sleep, eat, binge watching RUclips and repeat this weekend....
“I’m going to do this in a kinda weird way”.
Me: naturally
I needed to hear someone tell me to "just do it." Doing things has been hard for me lately
I immediately clicked because I saw Hobbit in the name. I just love Lord of The Rings
🤗🤗🤗🌿

I'm a fashion student right now and it was really inspiring to watch you make those really nice garments and the final looks were amazing thanks for also a laughable video always in a good way 🥰
🤗❤️❤️❤️
I have started living for the notification that Rachel Maksy has uploaded. And I have no regrets.
“Any Keira character” being on the dream cosplays list is a mood
😂😂😂🙏 she's in the best dang movies
Yeah to mish-mashing patterns! Honestly my favorite part of sewing is making it your own
I love tiny house shows, Ive planned to retire in one. Of course I has assumed that id be alone, but now I seem to have found my intended SO in middle age. So for now I am enjoying his 1920s house that I am moving into, in the future who knows? Have you watched Hollywood on Netflix yet? Lots of vintage goodness.
You actually inspired me to learn how to sew! I started with masks and then I made a Doctor Who button-up!!!
Heehee cute!!!
"Good Morning"
:)
"SYKE!"
*shocked pikachu face*
"It's afternoon"
:)
I'm so in love with both of these! Also hemming circle skirts is the absolute worst, but I found that using the bias binding method of a hem makes it so much more bearable
rachel really do be bringing the magic and whimsy back into my life
I really really appreciate these kinda chatting and sewing videos♡ I do a lot of hand sewing, so being able to work while listening to you reminds me of sitting with friends while sewing.
Thank you!
I stopped watching literal lord of the rings for this lol
😂😂😂 I AM HONORED
You got the right priorities
She made me buy the set of movies
I’ve been sewing since I was 10 (& I am Hella old) and I have to say, you are just FEARLESS with the projects you take on. I admire you and cower at the thought of some of the amazing stuff you do.
You make me want to be a whole lot braver with my machine and make my Grandma proud, as she left it to me when she passed away, beautiful vintage 1959 Viking.
@@PiscesVirago73 you have my same name, except..your mom spelled it right!
Oh god first I’m so psyched you answered my question - I second the turtle face and finger guns out of the room. No excellent boiled potatoes here XD
You will get a very nice seam.
If you have a rounded seam like here in the video I advise you to first pull one thread a little before folding. Then it lies nice and flat for stitching.
I hope you can understand my explanation 😁😊
Have a nice day 🤗
"....I stepped in poop..." NOW THAT'S DEDICATION FOLKS
Hobbit's life is harder than it looks 😂😂😂😂
Rachel Maksy honestly how did they not step in more poop i’m genuinely curious 😂😂
That's why Mr. Proudfoot was really scowling!
I just started sobbing seeing this in my feed bc I just appreciate your consistency and wholesomeness so much, right now especially when the world kind of feels like it's falling apart. Thanks for hugging my heart through making and sharing this, Rachel ❤
“My sweet sweet sunflower seed” oml
I love how your dog sits there like you’ve been conversing with him (or her, idk) the whole time. 🥺❤️
Like you like to say, we DO have fun here, and I guess I just wanted to thank you for that ❤✨
Haha our dog vomited as soon as my husband got him home ... That's how we found out our German Shepherd gets car sick lol he's getting better but still acts a bit sketch in the car sometimes lol
Yass. Something relaxing and interesting to watch from the hospital 🥰
Sending love!!
@@rachelmaksy thank you🥰💖
I was in hospital last week and arranged two tattoo by appointments from my bed woo productivity 😂
(get well soon)
I have such room envy right now. I need to find a place and move fast so I can make my own little cave of brightness and light.
It's so nice to finally be able to use it!!
Yes, that sunroom is so gorgeous!
exploring paris is the best i miss it but i LOVE watching a dress come together

i'd really love to see you do a LOTR elf outfit sometime. like maybe some of Thranduil's clothes
The cuteness overload from baby Frodo!!! AAAhhhh!!! You know we all needed that. Your videos are always so pure, ethereal, and hilarious! Thank you!
Just had to comment that I laughed entirely too much when you yelled “Norma” because my name is Norma 😂
I just completed my first hobbit outfit and I just want to thank you so much Rachel for the inspiration 🥰 ik you most likely won't see this but I had to say thank you thank you thank you for helping me be more comfortable in my own fashion taste
I just had your video in the background while finally finished my knitting project. It's so nice to hear you talk about how to just start sewing. Like of you never start you can never learn and become better.
Hey, I just wanted to say you have inspired literally every part of my life. And I had to say thank you. Love you 💕💖💕
Oh my GOSH you're too kind stahp eeet 😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️

Rachel: It's not historically accurate, but, who gives a fluff! I like this new phrase!! I think I'll use it from now on.
Rachel: Just DO it!
Okay, Rachel, I will! Sewing is one of the things that I have been shying away from, but, how hard can it be?? New Year's resolution: Sew something!
