Fursuit maker here! An xacto / hobby knife is the best tool to cut faux fur! You don't want to cut all the way through, just through the backing, and this keeps the fur on the edge from looking "choppy" as well as keeps the mess way down. For the expanding foam, it does work best in layers. It cures with exposure to air, so anything tucked on the inside won't cure. Do a layer, let that cure, then cut into the skin to remove it so the next layer you put down has something to bite into. It'll also be much stronger this way, as you'll have less bubbles and voids. Once you cut expanding foam, it is not waterproof, so always seal it before painting! Unfortunately, the hoof shoes are uncomfortable no matter how they're made - especially when wearing them outside. They can be a bit more comfortable depending on the shoe, but you're standing on your toes (as you said) the whole time and essentially tiptoeing on stilts. It is not easy, but does get a bit better with practice! I only wear shoes with "invisible" heels for paws / hooves to events instead of fully removing the heel for a bit more comfort.

Ever try to do a secret heel? Like a wedge with some grass/flowers over part of it to make it seem like the faun bring the meadows with them? Or even a curved heel that looks like a twig? Idk if this makes any sense. 😅 I think this involves redesign a high heel
In regards to that last part about the Turkish Delight. Its traditional flavoring is rose water, which is extremely floral and very much an acquired taste. When I tried it for the first time it tasted like my grandmother’s fancy bathroom soaps that I took a bite out of when I was 3 because they looked pretty.
Fry's Turkish Delight is alright. That goopy, gelatine-like, over-sweetness is covered in chocolate 😂 ... I also imagine a subtler, more authentic flavour being nicer.

Heelless high heels are a thing! They're specifically designed to balance without that heel support so they're much more stable than regular ones with the heels cut off, making them safer and more comfortable to wear. I've used them for a horse hoof effect with great success in the past.
If you have to cut faux fur in the future use a boxcutter or exacto knife on the wrong side of the fabric so the fur itself isn't being cut into, it'll spare you the mess and you won't give the fabric a weird haircut

Part of the reason that people use resin for hoof shoes is because it's heavy. Normally that's a drawback of resin, but with heelless high heels it adds some extra stability and keeps you from falling back. Also, tip for dying fake fur fabric: if you take a pet comb and brush through the fur after putting the paint in it it will break up the paint and fix some of the crunchyness
As someone who wore heelless wedges (basically hoof style platform wedge shoes) for awhile, I can tell you that there's a lot more structure to balance your weight forward than just removing the heels. The Krampus idea is a really cool one! And you could pop the seams on the underside of the arm and going a bit down the sides and put in gussets so you will be able to put your arms down (when you get to school at least 😅)

Oh dear Rachel is getting into fursuit making techniques, and with how far Rachel takes projects, I’m expecting an “I made a full fursuit of ____ from -insert media fixation of choice-“ video coming in the future. How far into the future will that video be? Who knows! All we know for certain is that she will underestimate how long it will take her.
i convinced my grandparents to let me take some of their deer antlers to make a ren faire costume and i think this might be a sign that i need faun legs to go with it
25:30 If you ever redo it, MissTwistedd did some wood shoe blocks. It would be more bulky than commissioned hoof shoes, but hey, that method exists. I love how the legs turned out and the photo shoot was addorable
Lady Tumnus is a massively inventive idea and I think commissioning hoof shoes would actually be something YOU would get a reasonable amount of use out of! On the whole, I appreciated your photo shoot reveal! Oh. And I also like Turkish Delight but I think the YOUR package may have come from the White Witch, if it indeed tasted that delectable!
As a MASSIVE Narnia fan, I cannot begin to describe how stoked I was when I saw the thumbnail and title for this video! I agree fully that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a Christmas movie and I will die gladly on that hill. (Fun fact, my introduction to the Chronicles of Narnia was through the 2005 movie my parents took me to as a late birthday/early Christmas present. I fell in love with the world of Narnia through the movie, read all of the books shortly after watching the film for the first time, and to this day The Chronicles of Narnia remains my all-time favorite book series.) Also, I've been having a really cruddy day/week so this is exactly the mood boost I needed. *EDIT* The reason why the internet says that Narnia lied about Turkish Delights is because Turkish Delights are traditionally flavored with rose water rather than a fruit or nut flavor and given the fact that rose water is a very acquired taste, most people are extremely disappointed when they try authentic Turkish Delights. (My mom actually tried a piece on my behalf a couple of months ago while she was at work because they did a thing where people brought in dishes from other countries and someone brought in Turkish Delights flavored with rose water and she tried it and hated it. When she told me about trying it, I was like "I appreciate you doing that for me, but I could have told you not to try it!")
Another point on the Turkish delight topic: while they're an acquired taste, you would surely acquire that taste quite fast too if you had been living on food rations for months!
As someone who made hooves using resin and a saw off high heel, the weight of the resin amd width of the base of the hoof helps alot with counter balancing your weight off the heel. I also wear high heels alot for long periods so my endurance for uncomfortable and difficult to walk in shoes might be different. But i felt fairly stable at outdoor renaisance fairs on uneven ground.
Rachel - if you have not seen the 1988 BBC version of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, you have not yet lived. The camp!! The furry-adjacent costumes! Adult human actors in beaver suits playing Mr. and Mrs. Beaver!! (I for real love this version of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver so, so much.) Random animated critters superimposed over the live-action film because CGI wasn't really a thing! It's just truly a great viewing experience that I recommend.
Fun thing, I was actually going through the Christmas movie alignment chart while I was watching Crimson Peak to decide if it was a Christmas movie. I mean, the main character gets visited by four spirits with a dire warning, snow, there's red, greens, golds. Christmas! I actually made Turkish Delight and in the comments there were people who didn't understand how Edmund could betray his family for a mediocre treat. A defender of Edmund pointed out that they had been rationing for months maybe years and Turkish Delight would've been a week's worth of sugar. Also, learn from me, don't coat it in powdered sugar if you make it. If the instructions say to do so, don't. It'll melt, it'll be slimy. Don't. Corn starch is all you need
@makeda6530 Definitely not. I totally didn't make it for Halloween because I was a Fae and I thought it would be funny to make treats linked with temptation, totally not something I did to possibly curse the whole office because some people have said before they'd eat anything I make and I took advantage. Totally didn't do that.
I can't even begin to tell you how much Christmas joy this brought me :) I grew up watching the BBC Miniseries of Narnia (highly recommend!) and Mr. Tumnus is one of my all-time favorite fantasy characters. The fact that you wore a red crocheted crop top with your totally awesome faun legs was absolutely FABULOUS!!!!!! You truly made my heart glad which was much needed after a very weird and fairly sucky year. In short Rachel, thanks for being you and for sharing your awesomeness with us all :D
HECK YES! Lady Tumnus, Lady Pan, all of the faun costumes. Aww, I wish you could have known about the razor cutting method for the fur! I didn't have tumblefloofs after using it on faux fur.
This old lady wants to grow up to be Rachel Maksy and the level of utter fearlessness when it comes to making things. "Eff it.. i'm going with it". Inspirational
You just very kindly inform people of said rules, like a true friend. Just because a rule happens to align with our interests doesn't mean we made it up, promise
Maybe it didn't turn out exactly as you wanted, but I did fully grasp out loud during the reveal when you moved the umbrella to show your face!!! And yes, it's a Christmas movie/book! Santa Claus is able to return and bring gifts when the Witch starts losing her power. (You could also call it a Spring movie though, because the Winter ends so quickly once the spell is broken...) The great thing about Chronicles is that you can read/watch them while completely ignoring the religious allegory, and you don't miss/lose anything. Thank you, CSL!
fully thought that mug at the beginning said "dont talk to me until i've pondered my orb" until i was able to read it fully. on that note, petition for a wizard mug that says "dont talk to me until ive pondered my orb"
@ she was trying to create a cutout in her leg, which would accentuate the curve she was creating. But it didn’t work. The hole was only on the back of her bed and the curve was already good enough
6:12 - "the foam gulped up the glue" When using contact cement on foam like that: don't use a brush. Use a bit of foam and DAB it onto the surface. Same with the fabric: dab it on. A little should go a pretty long way; you can always dab on another layer if you need to, but yeah- with a brush, the foam will sponge it right up. Wildwood contact cement works great with foam, when applied well. A foam dauber has always worked best, for me. 6:40 - moon walk!! Wow! Yeah, man, you did it great!
I love Turkish delights! I guess the texture is just a bit unusual and especially the rose flavoured ones are a bit perfumey, which might throw some people off, but there are so many different flavours to try. I don't know if I would sell out my family for them, but I guess there weren't that many sweets during the war, lol.
Totally loved this chaos that is Rachel creating. I think it turned out beautifully. And yes The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a Christmas movie just like Die Hard is a Christmas movie. I was introduced to it ages ago when the animated movie came out. I begged my Dad to get me the book and I didn't stop there. I have all the books, the series that played on PBS back in 1988-9 and the more recent movies that were released in the theater. Ironically I don't have a copy of the animated movie that started my love of Narnia. See you next year. Can't wait for the Chaos to start!
Fun build. The end look for the photo shoot looks good. I've been considering making some sort of hoof shoe. My choice for a base shoe is a chunky stacked platform heel in clear acrylic so that I can leave the heel on so I will have the support and stability of the heel but the clear material will give the illusion of the heel not being there. As for working with faux fur, wear some sort of eye protection and a basic mask while working with it. A scratched cornea sucks. Trust me on this. A wire pet brush helps fluff up the fur around the seams and smooth the fur into the shape/direction you want. It also helps soften painted/dyed fur. I wish I had photos of the faun legs and costume I made for a friend years ago to share. It was a fun project.
I imagine walking in those hoof boots could count as leg day. Twas a most picturesque photoshoot in the snow. I'm not sure how you managed to avoid looking cold 😊
Less a leg day and more a “try not to fall over” day lol. I have heel-less heels, and that’s what most hoof shoes are made from, and you need so much damn practice to even just keep your balance since you don’t have the same heel support 😅
What a fun and imaginative project! Rip: when putting a non-stretchy garment over something, it's easiest to fit it on without anything extra inside (like the mannequin legs) so there's lots of room for squishing things around and into place, then putting the combined garment onto the mannequin or person as a whole unit.
I love your projects Rachel. And you also show your Mittagessen and how you overcome them. Like Bob Ross said: "Only happy little accidents. " I hope you had a nice Christmas days with your loved ones. I wish you a brillant start into the New Year with lots of creativity and ideas for new projects
I have a tip for the hooves!!! What I would do is not use heels use flats or boots (cuz they hurt less and I can't walk in normal heels) and use craft foam (the flat kind you can get at Walmart) and make the hooves that way. It'll be less dainty and more on the cartoon side but it'll hurt less. Also I do suggest watching fursuit videos on deer and goats if you want a more in depth tutorial. also they can probably explain better than I did 😅
Highly recommend looking into more fursuit makers, but there's also makers like Chaos Costumes for hoof shoes! Also, high heels aren't meant to be used without the heel, so just cutting it off will stress the shoe where it would normally have support (and if the sole doesn't have a metal plate, it can even break). There are heels high heels you can get for this though!
Love this! I forget that most people likely pronounce "hooves" as h-ooh-vs like you do (vs my southern ears used to hearing it as h-ugh-vs) and it amuses me everytime I hear you say it
So cute! I know it wouldn’t work for conventions, but maybe you could make hooves with green-screen heels to save your feet and still achieve the right look?
I really like how you include the things that don't work, along with your reveal roundup. It can be more informative than what did go right. Happy New Year to you and your family 😊
The legs turned out so cool! The hooves look really good from the outside, but it definitely makes sense to have hoof shoes made if worn in the long term. I’m pretty sure hoof shoes are re-balanced to help with stability. It is still so cool that you made a temporary pair!
I love this idea and it’s very cute but as someone who works with fur to make my own crafts I was dying. I’ve made my own pair of pants like this (in fursuit terms it’s called digitigrade) I really recommend looking up furry tutorials on how to get a general idea on how to make the legs. To make the shape more rounded to your thighs out, you’d have to use three pieces of foam and cut them into the shape you wanted. For the hooves, I would have went for shoes with wedge style heels and stitched it to the legs themselves or if you wanted separate just put the legs over the seams of where the shoe fur meets and the leg fur ends. I definitely recommend buying fur online (there are tons of places with better fur than Joan’s and better prices). Remember to keep fur direction in mind and brush out any paint or it’ll clump and feel gross. Also hot glue is your best friend with these. Making the padding takes a lot of sitting and carving down and finessing to get right but it’s totally worth it. There are so many great tutorials online!!
Oh I am so here for this, the Narnia movies definitely are Christmas movies, I just rewatched them and this is the perfect cosplay for this time of the year and I'm so happy about this video
I used expanding foam for a minotaur cosplay on some heelless shoes. (Unfortunately the shoes were a size too small and I only wore them once and then never again :( ) Worked well for me but I didn't use as much foam on the initial coating as you did. Would recommend trying that method again for hopefully another project you could be excited for as they are really light. I did make an upward curve around the "toes" of the hooves as I made them chonky and stick out a bit. Helped for when I walked that the end of the hooves were rounded at the bottom. So they were almost levitating rather than level with the actual shoe toe. So cute the outfit you had at the end.
I just wanna say something that a lot of cosplayers already know, just making sure others know too. When cutting faux fur, only cut the backing so it doesn't end up a scraggly mess. If needing to shave fur to a different length, cut around all the pieces, NOT CUTTING THEM OUT INDIVIDUALLY, and shaving the whole big piece at once. ALSO! If creating a tailor any sort, if you don't want the poofy scraggly top like an angry animal, when you sew it, shave the top off! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I love your projects and am really in awe of your builds! This was such a whimsical video to watch and hilarious in so many ways... what a treat, Rachel! Thank you for this gift, you inspire and delight us all year long! Happy New Year's Eve, fellow maker!!
I love that you attempt new things and learn in the process. It’s a great way to approach creative projects especially as the process is often just as interesting as the final result.
I looooove the time you take in your videos to you talk about how and why some things failed, everything is a learning process and as someone who loves creating and problem solving it's always so interesting !!
thank you for making this! i've been working on a krampus fursuit for years with the similer idea of padding mixed with heels and the hoof placed on the toes. but because my sewing machine hates me and the goblin in my brain likes hand sewing all over the room. i needed motivation like this video to tell me "hey this isn't inpossible! go finish the darn fursuit!"
Fawn legs are so much fun! My grandmother made me a pair years ago and I still have them. They are definitely not as technical as yours but they are great ❤ Perfect video!!!
This turned out so cute, and I'm so glad you enjoyed making it! I hope you managed to find enjoyment and rest during the holidays (also, when you brought your sewing machine out of your coffee table I exclaimed, "that's so cool!" 🎄💚
LETS GOOOOOO! Narnia is like-engrained into my very soul. The movie came out in December, a day before my birthday so my party theme that year was all Narnia. ❤❤❤ I had the hugest crush on William Moseley….my best friend and I were defending Edmund all day because he’s our favorite….and I even had a gorgeous snowy birthday cake with a lamppost. 😊

top notch work. hat doffed.

25:30 If you ever redo it, MissTwistedd did some wood shoe blocks. It would be more bulky than commissioned hoof shoes, but hey, that method exists. I love how the legs turned out and the photo shoot was addorable
OMG, I made faun legs for a Lady Krampus this year. I freaking love wearing them. They were great for a Krampus pub crawl.
What was your footwear? Asking for a friend.
Rose water can be so delicious though
Another point on the Turkish delight topic: while they're an acquired taste, you would surely acquire that taste quite fast too if you had been living on food rations for months!
THIS IS LITERALLY THE PERFECT TIMING I WAS JUST LOOKING UP VIDEOS ON HOW TO MAKE FAWN LEGS!!!
Snacking on Turkish delight was ***chef's kiss***
And she had the tiniest bit of powdered sugar on her wittle nose ! 😂 ADORBS ! ❤
And it was enchanted right?
In short Rachel, thanks for being you and for sharing your awesomeness with us all :D
did anyone laugh when the hand fell and the middle finger broke off. lol comdy
Out loud
I knew the instant it happened that Enya would play.
Indeed 😂
HECK YES! Lady Tumnus, Lady Pan, all of the faun costumes.
Aww, I wish you could have known about the razor cutting method for the fur! I didn't have tumblefloofs after using it on faux fur.
I gave you a like for “tumblefloofs”. 🤣
This old lady wants to grow up to be Rachel Maksy and the level of utter fearlessness when it comes to making things. "Eff it.. i'm going with it". Inspirational
Narnia is in fact a Christmas movie, they literally meet Santa!
When I tell my husband I got something on a good sale he likes to say "Oh you mean you bought it at what it's actually worth"
My husband will hold up his hand and say, "don't tell me it was on sale." Baby don't get it.
@@peglamphier4745 I'd just be like "well okay I won't."
Now you must cosplay Grover from the Percy Jackson books. I don’t make the rules.
You just very kindly inform people of said rules, like a true friend. Just because a rule happens to align with our interests doesn't mean we made it up, promise
I wonder if a clear acrylic heel would make the shoes any easier to wear? Regardless this is so fun I love it! You look so cute as Lady Tumnus!
I wonder if adding green screen fabric to the shoe heels would have been better
Maybe it didn't turn out exactly as you wanted, but I did fully grasp out loud during the reveal when you moved the umbrella to show your face!!!
And yes, it's a Christmas movie/book! Santa Claus is able to return and bring gifts when the Witch starts losing her power. (You could also call it a Spring movie though, because the Winter ends so quickly once the spell is broken...)
The great thing about Chronicles is that you can read/watch them while completely ignoring the religious allegory, and you don't miss/lose anything. Thank you, CSL!
fully thought that mug at the beginning said "dont talk to me until i've pondered my orb" until i was able to read it fully. on that note, petition for a wizard mug that says "dont talk to me until ive pondered my orb"
Maybe the green screen pants things isn’t common online, but it is how they made the faun’s legs in Pan’s Labyrinth
I still don't fully understand why she cut just that small bit out? What was green-screened onto the back of her knees?
@ she was trying to create a cutout in her leg, which would accentuate the curve she was creating. But it didn’t work. The hole was only on the back of her bed and the curve was already good enough
6:12 - "the foam gulped up the glue"
When using contact cement on foam like that: don't use a brush.
HOOVES WITH THE FUR
Difficult difficult lemon difficult, are words to live by😂
The construction of the legs was quite an undertaking! Looked really good. You looked stunning in the reveal❤❤❤
Omg I was not prepared for the floating torso song halp
Also to avoid the fur fallout, cut from the wrong side with a sharp blade like a box cutter! Works fabulously
Next time you use expanding foam take rubber gloves with a lot of Vaseline and press it in as you're doing the layers that way you avoid the air holes
I was not prepared for the "fawndies"! Thank you for a much needed laugh! Have a Happy New Year!
Scoot over Halloween, Christmas costumes coming through!
I'm really ill right now and came on RUclips to binge watch some old Rachel videos and there's a new one! Fantastic timing ❤️
This would be so good combined with a Grinch Who Stole Christmas cosplay! You would make an EXCELLENT Cindy-Lou Hooves
Narnia is my favorite. I named my daughter Lucy! And Rachel is my favorite creator. Best of both worlds!! 🎉🎉🎉
Narnia is such a moooood. I love it so much! Great video, Rachel! Always fun watching you! 😊
I really like how you include the things that don't work, along with your reveal roundup. It can be more informative than what did go right. Happy New Year to you and your family 😊
27:09 The gap between good Turkish Delight and bad Turkish Delight is wider than Niagara Falls.
I wouldn't say no to a bag of Turkish delight. But I take it you meant bad.
Has anyone told you lately how amazing you are, and soooo much fun to watch!! :)
WAHOOO! The creature chronicles continue!!
25:05 oh no, you poor thing 💔 I hope that heals up quickly for you.
I love your projects and am really in awe of your builds! This was such a whimsical video to watch and hilarious in so many ways... what a treat, Rachel! Thank you for this gift, you inspire and delight us all year long! Happy New Year's Eve, fellow maker!!
Whether the hooves lasted or not, they looked spectacular!
I love that you attempt new things and learn in the process. It’s a great way to approach creative projects especially as the process is often just as interesting as the final result.
Yay! Rachel time! I missed my cozy craft witch.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING YOUVE CREATED (And ive been watching you since vintage jewelry subscriptions!!!) You make the perfect faun!!!!! O.m.g. 🥰🥰
YESS one of my favorite movies, I always rewatch it at this time of year so this is perfect❤
Fawn legs are so much fun! My grandmother made me a pair years ago and I still have them. They are definitely not as technical as yours but they are great ❤
Perfect video!!!
You made me laugh out loud a bunch of times.😂. Magical.
This is incredible! ❤❤❤❤ One of my favourite things you ever made!
Lord of the Rings is also a Christian themed book!
I love that!
OMG, you are the cutest fawn of all time!!!!!!!!!!! I think you did an awesome job.
This was amazing! I love seeing all the creative ideas she comes up with especially when using stuff like foam! ❤❤❤ Also I need that coffee mug!
This is the exact thing I needed for my mental health. You never fail to impress Rachel, I freaking love it!
welp a new Rachel maksy video dropped. let me grab my wine and cozy blanket
This turned out so cute, and I'm so glad you enjoyed making it! I hope you managed to find enjoyment and rest during the holidays (also, when you brought your sewing machine out of your coffee table I exclaimed, "that's so cool!" 🎄💚
I can’t believe we got goat!Rachel before we got GTA 6
I've always dreamed of having a faun leg costume omg!!!
I stg if you dont give that mannequin finger to someone and tell them youre giving them the finger i will RIOT
I love the reveal and the fact that it was snowing. It was truly magical. ❤❄️❄️❄️✨️✨️
It's both a Christmas and Easter movie both allegories are in there.....
