It's helpful to sheep and other animals to be sheared for wool. Without being sheared, animals walk around with 50-60 pounds of wool. It hangs over their eyes so much that they can't see...and thus can take serious falls, even deadly ones. Plus, with too much wool, it makes it difficult for them to eat. Shearing is a great service for animals.
For anyone who ever gets something that didn't come with a manual, google will almost always have it! I love how the coat turned out! I've always wanted one shaped that way but knee length and RED!
This has saved my figurative ass so many times. Also when you've had the manual initially but now it's lost and you suddenly need to check an error code or something.
I don't have the manual for my machine and google saved me. I also just bought a pattern in a 1950's style coat and I can't wait to make it! This video inspired me
I am literally on the hunt for info and knowledge, to make a coat like you discribed! I have always wanted one. And now, in my 50s, I am gonna make me one! Ha! Can't seem to find a pattern that fits what I want. So I will create it!
i'd have been more than tempted to use miss v's (aka snappy dragon's) trick of making a usable mock-up by cutting out and sewing the lining first and fitting that before touching anything as precious as wool, silk, chintz, or linen.
I rarely comment on any videos, but the sight at 12:30 of old Łucznik sewing machine in such a good shape and still working melted my heart, as it was manufactured in my country long time ago. I used to have one back when I was teenager, it belonged to my mum before that. Much love and respect. The coat came out beautiful.
It's very beautiful As a temporary solution, wear a belt with it, the snap buttons won't snap open all the time with a belt and it'll add some details as well
Found this video as I am making a coat for my doll with princess seams, a modified version of your coat. You look great, I really love the twirly skirt!
Beautiful coat. The interfacing gives a good shape and I agree about hood and up to neck closure. Thd size is fine - remember a coat should be able to be comfortably worn over a jacket.
Oh I'm so glad you lengthened your lovely coat. It will make a gorgeous silhouette without a skirt or dress peeking from underneath. And your lining is perfection, beautiful.
I only buy wool from a small local shop that sells recycled wool, they do still sell non-recycled as well, but they are super picky about where their stock comes from (talked a lot with the owner). One thing I usually do when making coats is to add a bit extra fabric in the back, and having buttons and a small band that cinches in at waist (you can also have waist ties that are sewn into side seam and ties in back), so that if I want to bundle up with extra layers under I have the room to do so without risking having the back of the coat restricting movements from the added layers. Another thing, which is something I often have issues with myself, is that most patterns have armholes that are quite wide (and extend quite a lot bellow the armpit, as well as cutting into the front more than back) and that sometimes makes them a bit restricting in arm movements.
Gorgeous coat!!! You could also attach the hood with small buttons, I have a coat like that & it's very versatile! Hood on day to day, no hood for dressier occasions.
If you take the plunge, just start on something simple, watch some basic sewing video how-tos (you can even get a cheap or free machine on Craigslist or from a thrift store, and research about them first, even watch videos on here on how to service them), I'm betting you might learn how fun and rewarding it can be. You obviously don't have to, just watching others is nice too, lol, but it's worth considering.
What about a detachable hoodie? Using brown buttons cuz it looks pretty both with and without the hoodie. Also use bronze button to give the coat a bit colour and shine (?)
I don’t know if this is a thing in the Netherlands, but in the UK you can ask your dry cleaner to do a “professional press” of your garments which will really finish them off beautifully.
The length will usually change on certain fabrics on a round. This because it is on the bias. If you hang it for 24 hours it will stretch to its longest length so it can be trimmed & hemmed.
The first coat is definitely a milestone in every sewing enthusiast's journey! And oh, the cost of the fabric. And lining. And interfacing. And thread and buttons 😆. Failing is not an option, suddenly! Luckily, it turned out very pretty - the flare out style is very flattering!

You'll be so happy for that stiffer interfacing. You might look into a bound buttonhole... the look is very nice on a wool coat and you don't need a special foot for it.
I'm wondering why you recommended the stiffer interfacing? I'm not that familiar with them felt before you said this it would be nicer to have less rigidity.
@@beebuzz959 it'll give the wool something to wear down into... if it's too soft to start with it won't have anywhere to settle into. Does that make sense out loud? Lol seamstress logic.
@@adriennegonzales2636 It makes sense for me. Remember that not everyone here knows how to sew, or why some things are done the way they're done, especially beginners. Thank you for explaining ;) Happy holidays!
I'm a super newbie at sewing, but I bought this pattern when there was a sale and despite my newness I just had to get it because it is also my dream coat. This has been confirmed twice over thanks to your video, your coat turned out beautifully! I can't wait to get more skilled and make this coat. I was thinking it wouldn't be until next winter, but maybe I can at least attempt a mock up this winter - I'm too eager to wait after watching this :)
You can easily make a lighter version as a prep, for warmer nights. You can also start by cutting the pattern, fitting that to yourself, then cutting and sewing up the lining first. Those will all be preparation for the coat and get you started on it too. But to really be sure you get it done, unless you're one of those people whose good at that, you can try making an "unschedule". That's just where you look to the future date you want the end result completed by, then divvy up an the work and time it'll take you to get there, and divide it but how many days there are to get there. Then you know what you have to accomplish by when, beforehand, so it's not as overwhelming and you're more apt to accomplish it. You can also give yourself rewards here and there, when you complete certain steps. The rewards can be as simple as buying the coat material after you've completed the lining.
Yes!! I have always loved your beauty videos and did not know you did sewing! I am trying to learn garment construction after 20 years of sewing at a beginner level, and looking forward to seeing more of this. Keep up the good work, I really appreciate your easy-going nature and sense of personal style.
This year finally I got coat from my dreams, really simillar to yours :D It was sewn for my from pure green wool, full circle, 50 vibe :) I feel in it like one milion dollars :D your turned out to be really really pretty, love the swish!
Wow, you legit made my dream coat (as in, I’ve previously actually actively thought about my ideal coat with the colour, elements e.g. hood etc)!!! Asides from the length being longer rather than more knee length. It looks amazing!!!! Such talent ❤️
As someone who has been making my own clothes for decades now let me share a little trick for those in seam pockets. (It may not be the "correct" way according to lots of patterns but it is so much less frustrating). Cut everything. The measure out and pin the pocket pieces where you want them one piece on each of the outside pieces right sides together. Check placement by pinning the seam to make sure the pocket lines up correctly. Then unpin the seam and sew each side of the pocket into place separately. Then press out the pocket edge seams and repin the side seams pinning around the pocket as if it was cut from the fabric with the outside pieces. Sew it all together in one fluid seam (going from the top of the garment, around the pocket and to the bottom of the garment). It will never be on the wrong side of the garment again! Sometimes I REALLY cheat if I'm making the pocket out of the same material and pin the pocket pattern piece to the correct spot on the edge of the other pieces and cut them out as one piece with the pocket being a bump out on the side. Then after the garment is sewn and turned the pocket can be ironed in place and topstitched to keep it in place (that works for either method). This has saved me SOOOOO much frustration over the years when putting in pockets.
It's lovely! I can't wait to see it done and with the hood attached. I've been thinking of making a coat like this so it was super helpful to get your thoughts on using interfacing in the skirt part of the coat. Thank you for posting!
The coat is coming along nicely. I believe with the belt bringing the waste in and breaking up the fabric and the buttons finally attached it will be absolutely gorgeous once finished. I wouldn't worry about the interfacing too much. Once it has been worn and washed a few times it shouldn't be quite as stiff and as you mentioned, it will be quite durable. I do agree with another commenter that if you have enough leftover fabric you should try to make some matching mittens or gloves.
The coat looks so elegant! I love the color on you! Great job! It's so swooshy and nice. The interfacing being too stiff isn't noticeable at all. Also the pockets are great!
Beautiful coat I can’t believe out of 400 patterns I bought from offer up for only $60 I can’t find it in there so I gotta wait til Joann’s has a $2 sale on patterns to get it cause I really LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOVE IT!! By the way you should not feel bad about using wool the sheeps NEED to get their wool cut or it gets out of control and uncomfortable for them so cutting their wool helps them and it helps us keep warm. But I understand everyone has their own opinions thanks for ur channel and tutorials and for always showing when u make mistakes most RUclipsrs don’t put it in
Beautifully made. I wouldn't worry about using wool. Sheep have to be sheered or they will die from matted heavy lice and tic infested coat which effects their movement also overheating as well as not being able to see through the wool. And shearing doesn't hurt them.
Unfortunately, shearing is not the issue with the wool industry, but the actual treatment of the animals to get the maximum out of them. There are practices that are right out animal abuse, but an accepted common practice, partly to ensure the longivity and health of the animals (which sounds great, but e.g. mulesing of baby sheep without sedative is cruel, no matter how you look at it). I do love wool though, and I use it for my winter wardrobe and my medieval clothing, be it sewing, knitting, crocheting etc. If there was an acceptable alternative, that has the same properties as wool and does not damage the environment or uses highly toxic chemicals, i would totally switch to that. Same for leather and silk.
Wonderful!!! Ich gratuliere! I will get this pattern. I have a Vogue pattern with a similar coat but I want to try this one. Here in Canada I would have to put a wind proof lining and some kind of fluffy warmth enhancing lining like primaloft or the coat just wouldn't keep me warm. Wonderful!!! Coat looks great!!!
There are many sustainable wool and alpaca operations here in the USA. Most of the wool is used for craft purposes since the quantities are too small for bulk buyers. It sounds ridiculous, but I actually bought a loom! Pedal/power loom with a 49 inch bed width. Cost me less than $1000 and now wool fabric is cheaper than ever. The jacquard variants cost a bit more but it's well worth it. I know what you mean about clothes being near perfect with minor details being out of place. I feel the same way when it comes to fabric. Herringbone is seldom made in the colors I want.
You literally quoted me when you were listing why you wanted to make your own coat. This is exactly the pattern I'm making and I'm lengthening it too. I feel so seen. The coat turned out beautifully, I can't wait to make mine. I do ceramics and it occurred to me while I was looking at buttons that I can make my own buttons if I want and now I'm overwhelmed, as if picking buttons isn't hard enough already.
I wish there was a love button because "like" doesn't cut it... this video and your coat are beautiful! It's such a timeless and regal looking coat and it's lovely on you! I'm so inspired to try it myself now!
When you were smoothing out the back while describing the belt it looked like the coat would look good with a swag belt on the back. You could look into some convertible belt designs that allow for different styles of belt by adjusting it. I wonder if a belt across the back could allow you to adjust the size slightly and pull the back in so it's not as wide. I also think adding buttons may change the sizing a bit as well. Unfortunately it looks like your lining is showing below the hem of the coat. If I remember correctly that is something that happens a lot and I think there are some specific tailoring techniques to avoid the lining sagging like that. You did a wonderful job and are fearless about your sewing. I love that. The style is great and the fabric looks like beautiful stuff.
Wow Lucy, this is so impressive, I also really enjoyed seeing how much you prepped for this, it's easy to tell this project meant a lot to you! I am considering buying a small sewing machine to start trying to do my own projects thanks to you!
You can find cheap or free machines in Craigslist or at a thrift store, and can even research them first, and how to service them. I also get a lot of material from thrift stores, sometimes just but recutting old garments that are in good shape. It might not be as daunting if you look at it from that perspective, Andy the whole process is enjoyable!
Had to pause the video, just to comment that you can find a blended fabric which have a large amount of wool (usually 70%), obtained by recycling old wool garment, and as the fabric use a mix of fibers sourced from different shades of blue/brown/black...the color obtained has a nice effect and no need to be dyed again. Maybe you can get it for a future project when you want a sustainable wool.

I'm making a short version of this right now! I want to make the long version from some vintage curtains so thought I'd better test first! It looks beautiful, exactly the look I want from my long version ❤️
When I saw this I immediately went and bought the pattern, because it's so beautiful! And for the detachable hood part where you were confused, step 75, the color shows the outside of the fabric while the text says inside. So it's a typo, but it really does mean the outside!
Omg!! I'm waiting to go to my parents-in -law's for Christmas to start a coat exactly like the one you made 😍 I've been waiting for your video since you posted it in IG!! I think it helped a lot to have an idea of what I'll be facing. 🙌 I love ypur videos 💕

I bought some beautiful wool to make a jacket, about ten years ago, and got busy and forgot about it (except for here and there). So I'll make you a deal, I'll finally make mine if you make yours.

I'm so glad I found your video on this! You've changed my mind- and made it look possible- I have some lovely blue-black plaid wool (that I sourced from an estate sale) that will work PERFECTLY for this one!
Such a beautiful coat you made!!! I had to chuckle when you sewed the pocket on the outside...Hehehe!! I really enjoy your sewing videos and also love your music choices for all your videos. Some content creators use really annoying music! LOL.... so much so that I have to mute their videos or stop watching them all together. Sone of the singers’ song people choose are horrible or the music is just too loud/distracting and very off putting. I really enjoyed the peaceful calm music that you always use for your videos.
Oh dear you’re my fashion spirit animal hahaha. I bought a modern version of this long dress-coat in H&M around 2008 and wore until it almost fell apart. Have been looking forever to buy another and still have it as I intended to take it to a seamstress to make a copy, but I started sewing this year, so I might try myself next winter.
Great job! When it comes to coats and jackets, I like them a little larger because I can layer up more. Have you considered using frog closures or toggle closures in addition to the snaps? Also have you considered making the hood detachable? That's what I love about sewing clothing, you can make it to fit your needs.
It turned out amazing! Congratulations! A coat is a super intimidating and complex project, but you worked it out and it looks great! Looking forward for more videos!
So happy i just stumbled across this video! Im making the same coat, Got the pattern, a beautiful red fabric and a very cool “Marauders Map” fabric for the lining i cant wait 😍😃🎄
That sounds amazing! I was looking for the pattern and saw a black coat with a red lining, and normally I don't prefer the hem that much higher in front than in back (other than just l from a vintage/retro perspective), but this one was like that and the red lining really stood out against the black. I bet yours would look amazing that way too!
my first thought for the extra fabric was for you to make a bag to go with the coat, if there is enough of course' the coat looks beautiful , it will look amazing once youve ironed it.
That's a BEAUTIFUL coat! I'm in love 😍. (Your excitement is so infectious ☺ I want to make one now!) I would have only used the interfacing on the bodice part and not the skirt portion. And yes I agree as well - a belt would be a great addition.
This is exciting! I'm sewing that same McCall's pattern but view C. I am looking forward to seeing how you like it overall when it's done and you've worn it a few times.

That sounds so beautiful and warm! -KR
Hello I've just found your channel and I'm absolutely blown away x for a young girl you are very talented xx well done
Wow! This is by far the best garment you’ve made! I think the shape is lovely, and it looks like a high quality coat. Well done! 🤗
You are talented! I love how you are growing your wardrobe with your own special, hand made items :) truly unique to you!
But I understand everyone has their own opinions thanks for ur channel and tutorials and for always showing when u make mistakes most RUclipsrs don’t put it in
I'm so excited to see this. I'm an advanced beginner/ intermediate seamstress. I'm making this coat for my daughter for Christmas.
Herringbone is seldom made in the colors I want.
omg this is one of the most beautiful winter coats I have ever seen
I'm hoping to sew an official coat this winter. As opposed to a dress that fits me like a coat...
I have a blue wool coat that I made with that pattern and I’ve worn it as my everyday winder coat for going on three years now, i love it.
I wish there was a love button because "like" doesn't cut it... this video and your coat are beautiful! It's such a timeless and regal looking coat and it's lovely on you! I'm so inspired to try it myself now!
Well done the coat looks lovely. The hood Is meant to been sewn or put on with buttons to the outside of the collar then you can have the collar up.
Your sown clothes all look so profesionally made i would buy them.
It looks great. Maybe a nice belt would help it stay closed until you do the buttons?
Working on this right now. Christmas gift for my wife. Wish me luck!
Thanks for the tips!
The lining isn't sagging, I just haven't attached it yet 😂
Wow Lucy, this is so impressive, I also really enjoyed seeing how much you prepped for this, it's easy to tell this project meant a lot to you! I am considering buying a small sewing machine to start trying to do my own projects thanks to you!
You can find cheap or free machines in Craigslist or at a thrift store, and can even research them first, and how to service them. I also get a lot of material from thrift stores, sometimes just but recutting old garments that are in good shape. It might not be as daunting if you look at it from that perspective, Andy the whole process is enjoyable!
Your machine is so stunning! I have a 1946 Singer, but I am so jealous of the color and design of yours!
I thought so too, and hope she keeps this one even if she gets a new one for Christmas.
It's very nice. As a beginner it takes a lot of patience.
Lovely!! I love full-circle coats, as well, and this one does not disappoint!! Well done!
Ohh that sounds really interesting, thank you!
I actually did the same pattern a few weeks ago and i love it 🥰🥰🥰
this is so funny - i just bought this exact pattern a few days ago!! i'm even more excited to make it now. i also have a problem finding the perfect coat for me. yours looks great! ♥️
I love it! But yeah, you don't want it to fit too well because you probably want to be able to fit sweaters under it. :)
I'm making a short version of this right now! I want to make the long version from some vintage curtains so thought I'd better test first! It looks beautiful, exactly the look I want from my long version ❤️
I'm so excited! I just bought this pattern on Black Friday sale! It was very helpful to see your work through
Use hooks and bars for areas of high tension
It looks amazing! Agreed, winter in the Netherlands is not warm!
🙌 I love ypur videos 💕
that's so pretty! I can't wait for you to update us on it once you get your sewing machine!
Those gingerbread man PJs are the absolute cutest
well now I know what I think I need to make for next winter
Przepiękny płaszcz ❤ chciałabym zobaczyć pełną stylizację, w butach na obcasie, upięte włosy w stylu retro . Piękny prawdziwie kobiecy
I love this coat! I used the same pattern for my first winter coat, except I used view B. It’s not as cold where I am! Beautiful job!
Yes, give us all the vintage coats...
I bought everything to do this like 8 years ago but still haven't done it!
Make sure you bike has good jacket protectors (jas beschermer) on the back wheel.
I bought some beautiful wool to make a jacket, about ten years ago, and got busy and forgot about it (except for here and there). So I'll make you a deal, I'll finally make mine if you make yours.
@@beebuzz959 hopefully soon I'll have time to sew again! I think if I do I'll make one for my toddler.
@@michellezevenaar Soooo cute! You could even make matching ones. You went regret making it, but you might regret NOT making it. But do NOT feel guilty because life is challenging and you do more than you probably realize anyway.
It looks beautiful and beautiful on you. Great job.
It’s so beautiful!! I love the length on you. It’s so swirly!! Great job!!!
I bought that pattern for my daughter. She wanted the shorter coat until she saw this video. 😄 You're coat is beautiful; you did a great job!
I just got this same pattern and started sewing it a few weeks ago!
Yay Lucy, I have the exact same pattern which I'm hoping to make longer and from tapestry fabric (already purchased) I was wondering about filming it and putting it up on my very small RUclips channel, I'm still undecided 🙂
Yes! If you need lots of time take it but you should do the vid! No deadline 🤙.
I agree, DO IT!!! What can you lose?
Aww thanks for the encouragement, I was so excited to see Lucy making the same coat, she's really given me the push that I needed. After Christmas my new project shall be .... Making a coat!
@@eleanorbirchellhughes I look forward to seeing the video, I even subbed to this AND your channel as well.
What a beautiful coat, you are so beautiful and talented.🎄💖
I'm so glad I found your video on this! (Your video was suggested because I watch Rosery Apparel) I've had this pattern, as well as a McCalls 7025 that I've been dying to try, but couldn't fathom working with so many pieces!
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that!
That’s a beautiful coat! 🤩 So very well done! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The hood will be detachable, and I'll replace the snaps with proper hand-covered buttons soon 😊 Can't wait until it's all finished!
@@Loepsie It's very beautiful.
I'm planning to make a matching beret! Although that'll leave me with plenty of fabric to make something else still 😊
@@Loepsie You can maybe make a bag or cover some shoes with the extra.
I absolutely love that coat. You did a phenomenal job with it so far, Lucy. x
That's a BEAUTIFUL coat! I'm in love 😍. (Your excitement is so infectious ☺ I want to make one now!)
I would have only used the interfacing on the bodice part and not the skirt portion. And yes I agree as well - a belt would be a great addition.
Oh that would've been perfect!
This is exciting! I'm sewing that same McCall's pattern but view C. I am looking forward to seeing how you like it overall when it's done and you've worn it a few times.
Beautiful project. Good idea waiting to do the buttons. Can't wait to see it fully finished
