    About 4 yrs ago, during my annual physical my Primary Care Physician alerted me to go to the ER immediately because of dangerously low iron (blood hemoglobin at 4)! I thought she was overreacting because I felt fine. But, the alarm in her voice really scared so I went to the ER. They admitted me and I got a blood transfusion. Afterwards, I felt sooooo much better, more energy. It seems Drs. downplay the effects of constant low iron due to fibroids. Fibroids induced anemia can cause strokes and heart issues if not checked and treated...no joke!!! Drs, please stop tip-toeing around the long term and more severe effects of fibroids...people’s lives are at stake!!!

      My periods have been way too frequent with significantly heavy bleeding, and I'm extremely fatigued. I've also been gaining weight. I was wondering why I'm always so tired and lack energy. I thought it was due to getting older and life style changes resulting from the pandemic, but now I'm even more concerned. My gynecologist told me that I probably have fibroids a few years ago due to my complaining symptoms at the time, but she didn't make a big deal about it. So I've been carrying on thinking that I'm suffering from something many women deal with everyday. Honestly, I've been internalizing my worsening symptoms, and thinking something is wrong with me. I've been thinking that I'm just becoming lazy and unmotivated, and I beat myself up daily, because my work performance in plummeting along with these symptoms. I'm constantly playing catch up on my job, spending my nights and weekends working to keep up so I don't feel as incompetent. I have so much anxiety and stress from work that I can't spare a moment or have enough energy to go to a doctor. When I'm not working all I want to do is stay in the bed all day if possible. Now I definitely think something more serious is going on with me. Sorry for pouring my heart out like that! I really couldn't help myself.

      Kimberly thank you so much for sharing this. My situation almost exactly mirrors yours. I am furious and in tears because although my blood haemoglobin was 4, possibly still is, I was not sent to the ER. Instead, I was sent to the health shop to buy iron supplements. This by voicemail too. When I asked for a prescription I was told I didn't need one. This has affected every aspect of my life. Over the past 2 to 3 years I have suffered from extreme fatigue, gained weight, become lethargic and mentally slow, as well as irascible and depressed. I have felt old and slow at the relatively young age of 45. It has affected my professional performance and my personal relationships. My quality of life has plummetted and this has all been preventable. I am furious! I live in the UK and we have a National Health Service that I and millions of other women have paid into for years. I feel cheated and let down. What can we do about this ladies? Shall we get together and form a global fibroid association/charity to educate and advocate for ourselves. By the way, both G.P.s I saw were experienced women doctors. So much for having more women doctors to improve health care for women. Go figure!

    • @Atlii
      @Atlii  2 года назад

      Myomectomy fails women commonly due to the inability of the surgeon to remove all of the tumors. The fibroids don't "grow back", they never left ! The fibroids that remain after the myomectomy immediately start to grow and symptoms return and a second procedure is often needed within 3-5 years. Hysterectomy is way too extreme and often has significant negative consequences for women. UFE is an outstanding option and should be done first. It is safer than surgery, less expensive, much shorter recovery, treats ALL of the fibroids with a low recurrence rate, and allows women to keep their uterus ! Learn more at ATLii.com

      Depending on the number and location of the fibroids, fertility after UFE is just as high as with myomectomy. UFE also is much safer (with myomectomy you can wake up without your uterus; also much lower complication rate and severity of complications for UFE), and treats ALL of the fibroids (myomectomy does not).

    What if your 45 with heavy bleeding and have had iron deficiency anemia for years and didn’t know why? They said mine was degenerative or “not a new one” would you recommend a hysterectomy or something else? I’ve had cysts on my ovaries as well, would it be good to have it all removed?

    • @Atlii
      @Atlii  4 года назад +4

      Chronic iron deficiency in women is often due to fibroids. Degenerating fibroids can still be partially alive and cause heavy periods. If there are fibroids that are near central cavity of the uterus (i.e submucosal or large intramural fibroids), they are the ones that lead to heavy bleeding. If this is the problem Uterine Fibroid Embolization should always be considered before hysterectomy. UFE is a nonsurgical, outpatient where patients get the relief of symptoms, avoid the risks/long recovery of surgery, and get to keep their uterus ! To read more about UFE, please go to ATLii.com. Good luck.

I would maybe do some research on this as this is the most non invasive procedure to treat fibroids. If your fibroids are affecting your standard of life i.e. heavy painful periods, bladder/bowel pressure etc then the NHS shouldn't have any reason not to treat them with UAE. Did your gynaecologist say why they couldn't be treated by UAE?
