Took me 4-6 attempts to teach my friends KT and they still don't get it. It took 1 attempt of WarCry and they love it. It's way easier to get into.

I think the fact that you have X Wounds, and it's a simple roll to see if you hit and wound as opposed to the Killteam and standard 40k method of roll to hit, roll to save, roll to wound, ect... Also the fact that you move a model then the other person moves one seems more intuitive. I've watched a few battle reports for Warcry and played one game and loved it.

Was if after the 5 atrempts at kill team? Maybe that played a bit in so that theu learned some from KT then warcry was easier because of it

Agree, I was championing so damn hard for Kill Team, speaking up it's old heyday, hype, hobbyist element, trying to rally interest among friends about the low entry fee and becoming sort of the defacto guy at shop to do nights of it; but I hate to say the staying power of interest was just never really there after everyone played a few games of it.
It usually came into a situation of "well if we're all here and got 40k stuff, I feel like we could just play low point 40k for all the effort and energy" or "if the new rule books includes more expensive elite units and HQs, and I'm getting closer to a proper 40k army, I again might as well be playing regular 40k". I also experienced the reoccurring complaint that Atom echo'd of "it just turns into 2 people trying to shoot at each other and maybe going for the objective.
Then came Warcry, people were skeptical at first and then upon seeing the gorgeous sculpts, monsters, fun ruleset and very easily digestible angle, people were loving it that it's been a shop mainstay for a good while with waiting room for people trying to get a table and play. It's too much fun and I don't blame those who dropped Kill Team to have Warcry in their rotation.

Kill Team kind of shot itself with the rule expansions. Here’s commanders! Cool. Here’s a tournament game BUT YOU CAN’T USE COMMANDERS! Here’s Elites and now it’s a mess! Here’s the Annual that undoes errata and makes rules unclear!
I’d like to see a Kill Team 2.0 that rebalances stuff, integrates the parts together more properly, improves the campaign. War Cry feels like what they learned from the mess they made of KT, but now KT is all but cast adrift.

Really glad to see you've re-evaluated Warcry and are giving it a go. Initially when I heard about Warcry I thought it wasn't for me however after reading the rules I did a full 180 and realised the simplicity of the rules was a hug bonus for me as it meant I could introduce newer non gamer friends, I could get my head around the game quickly and concentrate on playing rather than looking up rules and I also liked the "buy a warband box - play it" entry.
I now love the game and I really like how theyve expanded it with optional stuff rather than layer on more rules.
Looking forward to seeing your coverage.

It is a (relatively) cheap buy in. All you really need is the core book and a warband, which can just be AOS minis. I would suggest the branded warbands, if you don't have an army, though, as the boxes cost roughly the same and you get all of the cards and tokens.

Honestly, I hate to say it, but Kill Team rules need a revamp, hopefully with the next 40k edition of rules. It is all very broken up over so many rule sets, and injury rolls for example are super clunky and confusing.

Major reason I made the switch to Star Wars Legion. One free PDF that gets updated with rules from new releases. No expensive and expansive library to lug around and cross reference just to run your army.
That, and the alternating turns means no more sitting around for half an hour while your opponent plays with their toys alone
Plus it has a skirmish mode that's literally just the main game but smaller so that also takes the place of Kill Team for me

There is a link to Warhammer Underworlds if you consider that some of their minis can make the crossover as mercenaries in Warcry. Grashrak's Despoilers gives you a bray shaman, Eye of the Nine gives you a magister, Thorns of the Briar Queen gives you a tomb banshee, etc.

I want to support Kill Team, but how am I supposed to when I'm a latecomer and GW doesn't reprint their boxes (yes, I know you can get the models and scenery for almost twice the price separately, but not the cards and terrain rules)?
Same with Warcry, the damn good starter set is sold out everywhere yet it would have been great for more people to get into it, in the end most people getting the starter aren't even the newcomers, it's mostly already established AoS players looking for cheap terrain and models

    • @JohnnyLeyenda

The current starter set is junk anyway. Nobody likes Reivers and Tau don't use Fire Warriors in KT. And the terrain is the worst possible choice from their lineup, no doubt to clear out their least popular terrain kits.

  • @nl3869

I played KT once, i had a real pro tournament 40k player who was really nice and taught me and another friend, but there were so many "weird" rules that were so alien to AoS that i had played once or twice before, as well as from other games i play (mainly Asoiaf), like the weird "save wound" roll and shooting and charge. The game was fun, but only because i love playing boardgames/wargames with friends. Same thing with Warcry, but there the rules are "not in the way" cause they're so easy they don't distract from just rolling dice and having a good time over a few beers!

    @mikeadams3722 4 года назад +1

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Warcry, Mr. Perchow! (BTW, my 9 year old has only watched one of your vids and he's already copying your mannerisms). There is much more to say on this subject. Like when Warcry was released, GW described it as a kind of Kill Team for AoS, which it clearly is not. It's closer to Necromunda, because it has, as you say, a specific setting with specific new factions and what I would call 'low intensity' warfare, unlike Kill Team where each warband/team is a facsimile of the main Warhammer 40,000 armies and the whole thing is generic and a bit bland to be honest. What I and I think a lot of hobbyists really want and have done forever is an 'Inquisimunda' style skirmish game. Necromunda (the classic version) was used as the nearest best thing, then Shadow War Armageddon (which was classic Necromunda with minimal changes to support more generic W40K factions), then Kill Team (2018 version), but as I say it still doesn't quite give us what we want. Specifically, why is there no 'cultist' force list for Kill Team? I've spent a lot of effort trying to collate all the different bits that have been published for Kill Team in various media (expansions, PDF downloads, White Dwarf articles) to try and assemble the kind of factions I want to play - Warp Cultists, Machine Cultists, Mutant Cultists, Traitor Guard, Inquisition, Rogue Traders. Anyway, the point is that Warcry is much closer to what we want for W40K (inevitably someone in web-land has of course adapted the rules directly for W40K), in my case I have instead taken it as inspiration in what I call 'Project Warcry', creating a Kill Team setting and factions on the world of Bloodwind III, "in the spirit of Warcry", with factions like the Steel Golems (Traitor Guard), Star Lords (Starstriders), The Unforged (heretic Ad.Mechanicus), you get the idea. Oh, and regarding the rules being "simplistic"... shame on you, you're experienced enough to know simple is always better and certainly what I always strive for when designing games. I am absolutely sure that it is Jervis driving the design of Warcry (he was excited about it last time I spoke to him, a couple of months before it was released, although he couldn't give away any details), he, like most of GW, seamlessly moves between W40K and Warhammer so it simply represents the best and latest of where they are from a game design POV. And it should be said that the boxed starter is probably the most exquisite games package GW have ever produced, or at least one of the top ones. OK I've said enough, sorry for rambling, and we haven't even mentioned the quality of the miniatures, and the fact that The Unmade truly breaks new ground in being arguably the first truly grim and dark faction GW has produced - again, much closer to 'Inquisimunda'. We can only hope that the pendulum swings and the next skirmish game GW put out will be something like Warcry for W40K. In the meantime, yeah I agree with you, it's a difficult choice - Warcry (fabulous in every respect, except it's Age of Sigmar not so great) vs Kill Team (a bit generic and bland, wrong factions, not gritty enough, but it's in the W40K that we all love). I suspect GW are very happy with this hobby dilemma - they want people to follow both worlds if possible!

  • @ThomasGallinari
    @ThomasGallinari 4 года назад

I can totally relate. I'm a slow painter and like to play different styles of minis so I've always had more interest in skirmish games. I tried Kill Team but eventually found it kind of repetitive.
I'm more a sci-fi guy as well so I didn't pay too much attention to Warcry at first, and like you I was disappointed by the Chaos centric aspect of the game and the minis. But now I want to build Maggotkin, Skaven, Kharadron, Legions of Nagash warbands... All starting with the splendid Underworlds miniatures (don't know why their board games have such great miniatures, same with Blackstone Fortress).
And just like you I'm trying to get my wife into the hobby with Warcry because of the simple but dynamic rule system... Wait and see ;)

I am very pleased with WarCry so far. Comparing my experiences with KillTeam I can say that the shooting aspect of KillTeam, has pretty much turned games, locally, into pre-determined borefests, whereas in WarCry each game has been a rollercoaster of emotions in decisions taken in-game. I don't even mind our local grogs that speak against AoS or WarCry, but good Lord I'd rather play these two games than anything 40k at this point.

All very good points. I love Warcry, the rules are very straightforward and even my buddies who don’t play miniature games enjoy it. My wife loves it, and she has never really enjoyed any miniature games.
The simple rules make the game seem simple, but there is a ton of tactical depth in it, due to low amount of turns, tons of potential scenarios, and often very objective centered scenarios. Movement is king in the game, and combat is quick and exciting. You can’t turtle or focus too much on just destroying your opponent’s forces, because time is pressing and you will likely lose if you aren’t where you need to be when you need to be there.
I haven’t played a single game of Kill Team since Warcry has released, and probably never will.

Before the thing that shall not be named, my group had already started to drift away from Kill Team a bit. We all enjoy the game, but after more than a year of playing 2-3 games every week it was starting to get too familiar to the point both players could pretty accurately call game save some extreme swings of luck. Even then, everyone had pretty well established contingencies for luck swings against them. For us, we had been moving toward full 40k with a few of us also playing Age of Sigmar.
I have the Warcry starter, but haven't played it or even completely read the rules. I am not exactly sure why I haven't either. I mean I have a good number of the Warcry cults since I also have a Slaves to Darkness army and like the sculpts well enough just to paint them. I just can't be bothered to teach myself another game that I would in turn have to teach others. I did that will Kill Team having done well over two dozen teaching games. I do want to play Warcry eventually even if it is only one game. I don't know if I will get that chance though. Especially since I would rather play full 40k, Age of Sigmar or even a laid-back game of Kill Team a bit more at this point.

There is also that Kill Team is a refinement of the base 40K rules while Warcry is its own game.
Kill Team is much more clearly intended to be a gateway to "real" 40K -- at least it was when it launched.
Meanwhile originally Warcry gave you nothing you could use in AoS games (I know they've changed this now).
In general terms, the problem with melee skirmish games is how to stop everything degrading into a giant furball in the middle...

It's the opposite for me. I was super excited when warcry came out but now I cant bring myself to play any games. The simple rules are incredibly boring and make the whole game come down to 2 things: walk and whack with various modifiers to the dice. The game doesn't seem terribly balanced either. I'm pretty salty about my army (skeletons) being god awful. they get no mobility and to capitalize in their high numbers we need to sacrifice killing power. With 3" walking they pretty much just stumble around doing nothing unless I want to spend dice to give them average movement and put my leader in danger. They also have no ranged options to make up for the lack of mobility besides the necromancer (which is the only leader I can take. Why can't I have a wight king lead?) but the lack of shooting goes to skeletons in aos in general.

Warcry has gotten me into AoS. With the easy to collect Warbands, having multiple, affordable warbands makes it easy to get most of what you need for most factions in one box. You don' have to piece together a group of 5 to 7 guys from 3 different boxes. You can get a game of Warcry done in less time, and the rules are simpler and more accessible to newcomers, especially kids that have a shorter attention span. Also, the ability of bringing allies and monsters into warbands adds a fun factor without changing the rules. I liked the aesthetics of Stormcast and the Vanguard warband started my SCE army that I use for AoS now.

I didn't want to play Warcry until the rules came for AoS models. I have the chaos dudes from the core box, but don't like their play style nor their roster options.
And I tried to teach people Kill Team at conventions and local gaming events, but it was difficult. But Warcry is so easy to learn, even people who never player wargames learn to play it in one game. My friend's 5 year old son plays Warcry with us, just without complex tactics.
    I love Warcry :)

I get what you say about 40K being too big. I game usually a 1000 points these days which is quite good and forces you to make sacrifices in your choices for the army. If you want to try another low model count though, think about Armageddon. We had big tanks, war hounds and knights priced out of standard 40k. But with a beer and half a dozen models you get a really decent fast paced battle. I actually used a Lord of Skulls for the first time ever. As for kill team. Put a couple of shot glasses on the table with your favourite tipple in them and make it so you must hold that objective for two turns to drink it. The objectives in your own deployment zone need to be held for the whole game. Watch how intense the battle gets then, cause when you need to take away the enemy, melee is going to have to happen.

I think as far as simplicity is concerned GW saw the indy success of Song of Blades and Heroes and went "...wait, they have HOW many stats? Two? Like just the mooks? ALL OF THEM?!? But... People like that?"
So then they made their own limited-stat game and realized it can work. You don't need to write a huge book on how to have a narrative game. If you make the mechanics simple enough that the player doesn't have to memorize too much, it lowers the barrier to entry, allows them to focus on narrative, and can still be a good game.

I am someone who never played 40k but only Warhammer (and just 7 months into AOS). In likewise fashion Kill Team was so close to bringing me into 40k. Skirmish gaming is very alluring and the Jupiter in us just loves expansion. You have enough orbital experience to cross platforms but I have a couple more years (of fantasy painting) before I can jump ship into a 40k elliptical. 🤘But hey we all underestimate how much things change in time.

I've been out of the GW stuff for many years, basically the last time I played 40K, WFB, or Epic 40K, the necrons were brand spanking new, Khemri wasn't an army and so on (I miss Man'O'War the most). My favorite game is Star Fleet Battles so if you know that game, you know how complex I like my games. I'm curious about these as I recently got into Monsterpocalypse which is a pretty simple game but if you only want one force, it has a pretty low entry bar from what I'm used too. I'm curious how these compare to that game as I ponder getting back into mini wargames over my generally preferred chits and hexes games. I did have a few armies from those older games (Necrons, Orks, Skaven, Chaos Dwarves, Undead, and Greenskins mostly), so needing less investment to get into and then the smaller skirmish size sounds really appealing once we can play openly.

There isn’t a Warcry-specific warband for Orruks (a la Ironskull’s Boys for Warhammer Underworlds)
Cards for both Ironjawz and Bonesplitterz were released with the first wave of Warcry.
While this means you can’t get the cards (without paying a premium price), the stats and rules for both armies are in Tome of Champions 2019.

GW should have focused on Necromunda over KT and brought standard 40K models.units into Necromunda and allowed gangs in 40K. I think based on unit size Necromunda and KT kinda cannibalize each other but WC and AoS are very complementary to each other with a lot of potential for expansion.

Kill team: Skirmish - time to play very fast
Warcry: Skirmish - time to play very fast
Regular 40k : one game can take up to all day long.
Age of Sigmar : One game can take up to all day long..
The long and short of it is this you have lots of options attention span is your deciding factor. If you want to try a certain faction to see how effective it is try skirmish style it’s a a good testing ground for building that big army you want to annihilate your friend with. These styles of play are opening doors for more wargaming systems so the choices are getting vast. I’m excited because it will bring more into the Wargaming hobby without the expense stopping people at the front door.

My Wives likes WarCry over Kill Team, the rules are easier to understand as in KT which in my opinion has so many neagtive modifiers is rather tedious. WC is fast paced, the card system for terrain setup, mission etc. is really cool, i wish that KT would geht something similar and they some. My background is more 40k focused and i have a few Armys for it but those Fantasy Minis are a nice painting diversion.

The only thing about killtam i dont like is how sluggish it gets if you play ... say Tau or IG or something with 8+ models ... its a pain to remember all things about your dudes , tricky to coordinate and just annoying at times - but in those armies - running (say for tau) just 4 xv25's puts a lot of eggs into just 4 baskets that can still get easily sniped. I know i know, im no game designer im just stating what i felt annoying.
Obviously some imbalances show more and more - say if you need to knock out enemy soldiers in melee to gain VP and you play Tau vs Primaris... or that PRimaris with their -1 AP are generally super deadly in KT while some armies really struggle as the only thing with AP they have is maybe 1-2 heavy weapons guy that just gets nuked by primaris... But if you play against someone that doesnt abuse that and theorycrafts armys against you - its fun. Most fun i had was like Drukhari vs Tau or Tyranids vs GSC ... or a Scout Based (with two tac marines - i dont play primaris) astartes against a gsc uprising... it really felt balanced
but then again - drukhari can near table Tau in turn 1 if they play their cards right and get first turn so... unbalanced gameplay is the nature of the beast - after 5 victories against me where 4 where turn 1 forfeit tables my friend stopped using the "FOTM" drukhari cabale as it wasnt fun for him either to get lucky, get turn one - drive up to half rance and nuke away anything important.

With the discounted Black Library books even I tried to listen and get some sense of why anything in this universe would matter or be compelling and it might as well be a mashup game of orcs, zombies, mecha, Wall-E,, and Dr. Who. And I've loved the Vermintide games, which are my entry point into the fantasy setting.
