    Mk V also has that look because (per the HH novels) it’s more of an ad hoc, make-work solution to deal with supply line problems & in-situ repairs.
    It’s a blanket term rather than an official armor mark.

    Excellent video! It’s something that I’ve been scouring back issues of White Dwarf wondering about for the past while. Especially the introduction of the MKVII armour. Which isn’t that well documented, which is weird considering how iconic it became. Supplanting the beakies completely in nearly every way by the end of the RT era.
    It’s also worth mentioning that there were three Death Eagle marine minis featured in White Dwarf 112 - April 1989 that appear to be some sort of early prototype versions of the MKVII armour. Though slightly different to the ones that would appear a little bit later.

    I like the older marines being brutal weirdos. It's like the marines are a part of the Imperium that the Imperium would rather forget. The last of the techno-barbarians, with all the blood rites, barbarity and weirdness the larger Imperium prefers to think of as ancient history. Like techno-barbarians spiffed up a bit, trained to extreme standards to use advanced tech and held in check with oaths to the Throne.

    I think that Jim Burns cover was also the first time we saw dark angels in green, rather than black, but wouldn’t swear to it. Ironic that they later retconned the mark 7 armour as being post heresy.

For my part, I find the multiple armour marks (especially with the Horus Heresy minis and the proliferation of brilliant third-party digital resin sculptors) to be an absolute blessing for conversion work. I have several veteran CSM squads made up in different old armour marks, and am currently working on a 1,000 point "nostalgia force" of beaky Crimson Fists; so hearing you talk through various bits I knew and fill in vital tidbits I didn't is a huge value your channel provides.

    Fascinating video. Thoroughly enjoyable.
    I for one would love to see a continuation of the history of 40k. 2nd edition is where I started and it holds a special place in my heart, so much so that I’ve spent the last year picking up a 2e starter set and a full set of codices, rebuilding the collection that was lost in the Big Purge of my 20s (fool that I was). A deep dive of 2nd edition would be fantastic.

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB Месяц назад +1

      2nd edition is the best edition. This was when it was still weird and fun, and when it was still a game. 3rd edition was iconic, but this is where the company started pushing out game designers in favour of just making rules to sell toy soldiers. This was always a thing, but it became so much more pronounced as 40k became more of a product and IP than a game.
      And because I'm a weird old grognard who can't get over the past, I've been working on a retro-conversion of modern units and changes into 2nd edition.

    • @Eldritch_Hamster
      @Eldritch_Hamster 28 дней назад

      2nd edition was all about the story you and your opponent told while playing. All the random tables helped with the narrative greatly.
      I enjoyed 3rd edition. It still had a little bit of that narrative tradition, but not nearly as much as 2e.
      They are the two editions I'd play anytime. Rogue Trader was a bit before my time. I've got a facsimile copy but I've never put much time into it.
      Each subsequent edition after 4th moved progressively away from storytelling and further into "balance" and tournament play, which doesn't interest me in the slightest.

    Perfect timing, and nicely done video. First time I see someone put together the behind-the-scenes video about 40k power armor. The bit about how powerback was designed back in the day helps me for my power armor redesign(not restricted on who wears it, be it firstborn or primaris), the real highlight would be a powerpack that actualy holds your extra ammo, provisions and whatever else you need on the field, since it would be quite compact, you can use following combinations - 2 extra ammo modules(on top and bot), 1 jump pack(on top) and 1 ammo module(on bot), or just 1 ammo module(on top or bot).
    I'll check out what else is available here, this video was quite promising.

    A thing that you didn't touch on in the video is the real medieval inspirations that SM armor all share. Its not surprising that a company that primarily did fantasy miniatures would pull heavily from medieval references. The beaky helmet style was almost certainly inspired by houndskull bascinet helmets that were popular all over Europe in the high medieval pierid. The oversized solder pads are very probably inspired by late medieval jousting armors with large pauldrons that were meant to make jousting safer. Anyway fanatic video over all, keep it up!

    I do recall a photo in White Dwarf just when the Plastic Marine box was released and one of them had the beaky nose snipped off and a crude respirator grille was sculpted in. I think that may be the origin of the later marines because the beakies were never popular with GW.

  • @Toxichobbit.
    @Toxichobbit. Месяц назад +2

    The Jes Goodwin life size Marine illustration is a bit of a weird one. If you look at his feet they start at 1', so although the scale says he's 8' tall, he's "only" 7' tall. I'm not sure why this is, whether it is a mistake or a deliberate decision to make the Marine appear to be 8' (maybe they didn't have somewhere over 8' tall to draw him or something). I have The Gothic & the Eldritch where that image was first featured and there's no explanation in there. If you ever interview Jes, maybe you could ask.

    I liked Naismith's original LE2 design. Didnt really like the direction they went with it after that. GW mostly ended for me as 40k took over.
    Still have my Space Ork though, decided to give it a repaint recently!

    Terminator armour used to be a 3+ save on a 2d6 for a while. Terminator armour was chunky.
    A lasgun with armour negation -1 would knock both down to a 4+ save though. Marines did not like to slowly plod up over open ground.

      @ironbomb6753 This armour system survived in Necromunda, like many other 2e rules. Necromunda was were you played with the old close combat duels. No one in the Hive wears power armour though.
      The Spyrers got some sort of hybrid half-powered suits with Batman gadgets. Carapace was still heavy for Necromunda.
      Terminators look extremely costly in that list.

    I find it so interesting how they took their designs and then created fictional histories tying them all together, really great worldbuilding. Funny that they skip IX and go straight to X for Primaris, just like Windows 10 and iPhone X did lol. I secretly hope that one day they'll get bored of the Horus Heresy and move to the Badab War and introduce Mark IX to sell us cool new plastic marines......

    Heinlein's suit is way more than a Marine's power armor, it's more like an ungodly spaceship. I think his real influence on 40k is the space fascism, although it doesn't seem like he was running satire.

    "...also known as 'Eagle Armour'. It wasn't yet referred to as 'Aquila Armour', but..."
    I mean, 'Aquila' is just Latin for 'Eagle', so it kind of was. 40k just hadn't leant quite so heavily into the 'High Gothic' cod-Latin yet.

    "Powered" armour is certainly grammatically cleaner. It without doubt means armour that has powered components. "Power" armour could mean that - or it could mean armour made of power, or armour that provides power (either magic/psychic or just electric - ie, you're a knight with a built-in battery) or even armour that protects against power.
    On the other hand, the history of the English language over the last few centuries shows a clear trend toward loosing syllables - today we pronounce "quickened" as "kwick-end," but in Shakespear's time it was "kwick-en-ed" - or even letters - "lite" is informal but completely legitimate American English at this point - so I think the trend from "powered" to "power" is, at this point, irreversible.

    I think Space Marines lost something unique when they moved from savage killers with a few, vaguely knightly trappings but otherwise fairly smooth, simplistic armour; a kind of jarring mix of tropes that was lost in the move to more generic space knights in increasingly elaborate armour. Ironically, GW then decided to re-name things to more trademarkable, less generic phrases. Perhaps it could be said that they would have been better to stick with their earlier, rougher, but more idiosyncratic approach instead.
