It's been 40 years since this classic arcade of Donkey Kong was released in Japan, US and many countries and what's your tribute to it's anniversary? "This game is one of the greatest classic arcade games in history and leads to joy and skill. Let's celebrate Donkey Kong Happy 40th Birthday for this day on!!!"
It's hard to believe we're all in our 50s now, and there are no more arcade game rooms. Arcades were our favorite hangout places. If I had all those quarters back, I'd be a rich man now. Lmao!
Would you be richer though? If you had all those quarters back, sure you'd have more money, but would have missed out on those great moments, memories, and experiences. Sometimes being rich has more to do with our mind and soul rather than from purely a financial standpoint. Ok that's my deep thought for the day lol
I'm probably a little younger than you but probably not by much(I'm 43). I spent a ton of quarters on Bad Dudes and Final Fight, those were my 2 main games as a kid in arcades. While they're nowhere near the same tier as timeless classics like DK, Pacman, Galaga, etc., those were the games that I have the most memories attached to as a kid. And to this day I do still play Final Fight here and there, albeit in my home and on a console. It's not quite the same but it's the best I can do.
I wasn't even born by these days. It's incredible how much of a time traveling machine this game feels. It kinda gives us a glimpse of what the world and the technology were back in 1981. And we can tangibly access all this content instead of just remembering and looking at photos. True witnesses to consult from the days of yore.
Eddie Plant: "You see, the thing about Donkey Kong is, at the higher levels, the barrels become more random, possessed almost. And playing by the patterns doesn't do the trick anymore. Does it, Brenner?"
This guy actually plays these boards way different than record-holder players do. Odd patterns, especially on the rivet stage, taking the long way on the elevators, and no point pressing. It almost takes more skill to play it "wrong" like this.
Soo decent! Love this version. We made a Mario tribute video and definitely snuck some love for this game in there! Call me crazy, but despite all the characters and worlds and power-ups and gameplays, this is the best incarnation of Mario Bros.
The guy claiming to have the world record (guinness) or whatever, was possibly a douchey liar is what the OP is talking about. There's unnecessarily long, investigative videos on youtube about it. You'll auto-play your way through it someday if you haven't already.
For those who didn't understand, he is talking about Billy Mitchell. He used to be considered one of the best videogame players in the world, achieving records in Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, but they just found out he cheated on his Donkey Kong high scores that gave him fame as a desperate attempt to regain his top spot after he was surpassed, and while he may have made a legit perfect score in Pac-Man, he was considered the first player to achieve a perfect record, but sources are claiming he was not the first.
Arguably the Best and most iconic Classic arcade game ever along with Pac man and space invaders ! the one i played in the arcade had the pie factory as 2nd stage and then the srpings and lastly the "Knock down" the gorilla stage.
For anyone that doesn't know this is how the sounds are supposed to be. The run soumd. This is the arcade sound. Most emulators today have only one run sound pitch repeated over and over not being accurate.

I Played Donkey Kong all the time back In 1984'' 85'' Then my mom bought me the Atari 2600 lol My favorite game back then was Ms Pacman, Centipede, Donkey Kong And Astroides😊
I wonder how many quarters I stole from the top of my dad's dresser to go to the corner deli and play this in the smokey game room in the back? I would take most, but not all of the quarters, as not to get caught. Sometimes there was a huge pile of change and I knew I could take about 6 quarters. This was my favorite game of all. Growing up in the early 80's with a cool deli on the corner with all of the latest games was quite the experience! What a fun place to spend those years! :) Sorry dad! And sorry mom, I "borrowed" money from you too, from your purse! I had the time of my life though! :D
As of early 1981, Nintendo's efforts to expand to North America were unsuccessful, culminating with the attempted export of the otherwise successful Radar Scope. They were left with a large number of unsold Radar Scope machines, so company president Hiroshi Yamauchi thought of simply converting them into something new. He approached a young industrial designer named Shigeru Miyamoto, who had been working for Nintendo since 1977, to see if he could design such a replacement. Miyamoto said that he could. Yamauchi appointed Nintendo's head engineer, Gunpei Yokoi, to supervise the project. Nintendo's budget for the development of the game was $100,000. Some sources also claim that Ikegami Tsushinki was involved in some of the development. They played no role in the game's creation or concept, but were hired to provide "mechanical programming assistance to fix the software created by Nintendo". At the time, Nintendo was also pursuing a license to make a game based on the Popeye comic strip and animated shorts. When this license attempt failed, Nintendo took the opportunity to create new characters that could then be marketed and used in later games. Miyamoto came up with many characters and plot concepts, but he eventually settled on a love triangle between a gorilla, a carpenter, and a girlfriend that mirrors the rivalry between Bluto and Popeye for Olive Oyl. Bluto became an ape, which Miyamoto said was "nothing too evil or repulsive". He would be the pet of the main character, "a funny, hang-loose kind of guy." Miyamoto has also named "Beauty and the Beast" and the 1933 film King Kong as influences. Although its origin as a comic strip license played a major part, Donkey Kong marked the first time that the storyline for a video game preceded the game's programming rather than simply being appended as an afterthought. Unrelated Popeye games were eventually released by Nintendo for the Game & Watch the following month and for the arcades in 1982.
If you love these games, I recommend you to play Mappy. Mappy is a really spectacular arcade game. It's made by the same company who made PacMan (Namco).
***** I beg to differ. A feeling of achievement getting to the pie factory is greater in the American version instead of getting there in 4 levels like the JPN version. Seems to me more thought went into the American versions level layout IMO.

Good question. I think it’s just luck-the program randomly sends or does not send barrels down ladders. But he sure seems to get pretty lucky in this one.

To SCHLAUCHI: Why not try playing it until you reach Level 22? On that level, the bug in the code that creates the "kill screen" will kill you automatically.

Ahaa it’s no wonder that after level 9, The game will have a weird level order, it first will start with the barrel stage followed by the the pie factory stage, then it start with the barrel stage again then the alivator stage and rivet stage will appear afterwards. So it’s no surprise that the game shows 5 donkeykong’s in the last intermission screen. Then after level 14 it starts with the barrel stage, then the pie factory stage, then barrel stage again, then the elivator stage and then then barrel stage and finally the rivet stage. So the intermission screen obviously shows 6 donkeykong’s. But after that there should be 2 levels to reach the kill screen. Either way it’s a weird level order from nintendo at the end.

Then after level 14 it starts with the barrel stage, then the pie factory stage, then barrel stage again, then the elivator stage and then then barrel stage and finally the rivet stage.
