Fun. Good opportunity to talk about the 2600 Pac-Man, and how I've long considered its intro tune to serve as a microcosm of a game whose design choices were fundamentally driven by a very drug-addled brain. How on earth do you go from a recognizable little ditty that is actually music... to a four-tone avantgarde composition which I can only assume was a deliberate stab at the most discordant thing you could create with two voices? It sounds like he was trying to emulate the tones heard when typing on a phone keypad, and then just borrowed that work rather than trying to actually approximate the arcade's music.
Interesting how all the Atarisoft and Tengen versions just seemed to reuse the code for the 8-bit/5200 version(s) and sound identical no matter what system they were on.
