Back in those days computers were VERY expensive and not considered gaming machines. I think the only graphics card available in 81 was the CGA which was pretty ugly unless the artist knew how to trick it out.
5:18 this sequence of animations would lead one to believe that Kong's response to Mario reaching Pauline's level was not to carry her off to the next level, but to EAT her.

The Amstrad CPC version (7:41) is shockingly pretty good. I hadn’t realized until now just how detrimental it was in some versions to not have DK animated to throw the barrels. Not knowing when another one was on its way could really mess up your strategy.
To Be fair, It was made by Ocean. Who also made an upgrade of the Commodore 64 version thats basically the same as the Amstrad CPC version except for some changed visuals and a bug on the elevator stage
The arcade accuracy of Colecovision’s Donkey Kong, was a stunning turning point for home video games! I was thirteen at the time - I remember the era fondly! Prior to this, home consoles versions, of arcade games, were pretty simplistic.
(2:51) The off-key notes of the PC DOS version cracked me up. I'm pretty sure the Intellivision version was the first one I've played back in the day. I've since played the NES one (including on Animal Crossing on the GameCube), the arcade original (including on Donkey Kong 64), and the awesome Game Boy version that you purposely excluded from this video.
For the PC, most computers didn't have soundboards so games usually used the MB speaker which obviously only had 1 channel. If a game had music and sound effects the devs had to work really hard to make it work together.
Three distinct versions of the arcade original exist: old Japanese, new Japanese, and North American. The Japanese versions have you play all four stages in every rotation, whereas the North American version starts with only the barrel and rivet stages then adds the elevator and cement stages with the second and third rotations respectively. The version found in _Donkey Kong 64_ is based on one of the Japanese versions. The old Japanese version lets you prevent barrels from falling down a ladder Mario is on by placing his hand right on the edge of the platform above, thus allowing you to wait for a gap. Such is also possible in the NES/Famicom port of the game and, by extension, the GBA port.
It's amazing to see the changes over the years and the different iterations and interpretations of each console. It's also interesting to see the limitations of the console and the choices that were made to make it as close to the arcade as possible. Great video and comparisons.
Probably not but my father has one of these from when he was a child so I grew up playing it, one of my earliest gaming experiences :) It kinda plays like a game & watch game, not as fun as the arcade version but really nostalgic for me
So this game is an LCD game, kinda like the Game and Watch or Tiger Handhelds, based off of Donkey Kong. The gameplay of DK is not easy to port to an LCD, at least at the time, so that was probably the best they could do.
Mátyás Hunyadi the gameplay of nothing could be ported to those pieces of shit handheld games back then. Even back then I thought all those games were shit and not even worth playing.
The ColecoVision was the only good port for "relevant era" Donkey Kong (helps that Nintendo made it for Coleco, while they only licensed the Atari and Intellivision ports). The it's basically Nintendo system or bust.
Next project: Developer 1: "Yeah man, there's like an Italian plumber, and flying turtles, and pipes that open another dimension to a mushroom kingdom." Developer 2: "Far out."
Maybe it was due to the ports sound engine it didn't get a destroying, shaking sound so this was only sound to fit its destroying sound kinda weird but really that feels kinda scientific..
The ZX Spectrum was optimized for text. It wasn't really designed with video games in mind. But it ultimately became the bestselling home computer in the United Kingdom because of its low price and a gaming machine because of its popularity among young people.

I remember when me and my brothers were young , we had ColecoVision as a Christmas present from mom and Dad in Terrace, B. C, in 1982 or 3. It came with two games, Donkey Kong and Zaxxon. Both are great games, and thus I became a gamer.
What a small world! I'm also from Terrace. I grew up in the era of the Super NES and N64, but I also had my mom's old Atari 2600 with _Donkey Kong_ and plenty of other great games.
Somewhat inevitably, the Nintendo versions were best (though the e-reader take was like a bad hangover). The Amstrad version really pulled it off, while many of the others were things of horror. Mind you, the Atari 7800 and Coleco platforms performed honorably too. What it goes to show is how brilliant the original arcade game was, and so how very difficult it was to convert it well to other platforms, despite its simplicity.
The version I knew isn't here- Dragon 32 by Tom Mix software. The colour choices were utterly insane, but the gameplay seems to be way ahead of most of these, and the sound tone was awesome.
That's a great version and one of the toughest to play, I think it often doesn't get mentioned because it wasn't official, they tried naming in Donkey King and had to change it to The King.
The very first version of Donkey Kong I ever played was the Atarisoft C64 version. My brother showed it to me when I was a kid. I have not seen that version of the game in over 25 years, but I distinctly remember that walk-cycle sound.
Fun fact: Hardware limitations aside, the reason the 2600 and Intellivision ports were so crap is because Colecovision had the rights to the home ports of Donkey Kong back then, and since they were competing with Atari and Mattel, they developed two very gimped versions of the game for their systems while making a better one for the Colecovision.
That's completely false. Garry Kitchen made the 2600 port within strict time constraints for it to be ready for the 1982 holiday season and is still proud of how it turned out.
Most UK arcade cabinet's ran the 1981 Crazy Kong version of the game - near identical graphics, but very different sound effects and little in game music - that's the version I have a ROM of too.
It probably is not quite apparent by looking at these classic graphics, but the setting for this game takes place on a construction site and Donkey Kong is modeled after King Kong. Also this game was the first to introduce the concept of a Damsell in distress and eventually the iconic Princess Zelda became the character for the "Legend of Zelda franchise" inspired by this game. In addition, Mario also known as Jump Man became one of the largest historical mascot characters in the video game industry. Its crazy to see how much influence this game truly had.

...And is the ONLY 1-to-1 port of the original arcade Donkey Kong.
I actually glitched through the door without getting the coin. The Rare coin was easier though. Final Boss is too hard for me anyway.

It's amazing to see the changes over the years and the different iterations and interpretations of each console. It's also interesting to see the limitations of the console and the choices that were made to make it as close to the arcade as possible. Great video and comparisons.

So this game is an LCD game, kinda like the Game and Watch or Tiger Handhelds, based off of Donkey Kong. The gameplay of DK is not easy to port to an LCD, at least at the time, so that was probably the best they could do.

Aside from the arcade original, nearly the rest of the decent versions can only be found on Nintendo's systems (including the version in DK64).
Arcade Archives on the switch gives us the arcade version too
The c64 version looks pretty good compared to a lot others
The ColecoVision was the only good port for "relevant era" Donkey Kong (helps that Nintendo made it for Coleco, while they only licensed the Atari and Intellivision ports). The it's basically Nintendo system or bust.

🤣 @ 1:46 so that's where those sounds came from.

I don't know if anyone else feels this, but DK on the Atari really looks like if Chewbacca was in a star wars game for it.

DOS: Mario has noodle arms and DK farts.
Coleco published donkey Kong to the 2600
@@sonicsonic2022 That's what he said.
That's just an urban legend. They sold more VCS Donkey Kong cartridges than Colecovision systems lol

3:23 if donkey Kong the game could get tired then this would be it
It probably is not quite apparent by looking at these classic graphics, but the setting for this game takes place on a construction site and Donkey Kong is modeled after King Kong.
