Chon forces metalheads to face the uncomfortable reality that they love jazz.
Where is it jazz though?
@@user-pt4ic1qu5q Chords, time signatures and harmonies. You probably think of smooth jazz or free jazz when the word comes up, but Chon is a jazz and math rock fusion band. Their earlier stuff didn't really have much to do with jazz though.
@@doinkson it did, it was heavily inspired by the jazz fusion they listened to. Perfect example is the tapping solo in temporarily destabilized
I'm one of the biggest metal heads I'm aware of, and CHON is the fecken bee's knees, duderino
Chon feels like metal to me. Subtract high gain and a vocalist. Maybe its just because of the intensity of the drummer. The guitar phrasing and when the drummer decides to be on top or sit in a pocket. Chon is one of the best decision making groups around right now. Live is almost a surreal experience. Watching them and almost not being able to believe what's right in front of you.
@@zealobiron couldn't agree more, everything they make is just brilliant.
If he ever reviews chon again, Bubble Dream would be a good one
CoreCasual Gaming and stuff like soft metal
@@1998XBOX Easy listening metal. Lol
We don't get many CHON reactions here in RUclips. I didn't expect Waterslide to be selected I thought Perfect pillow would be more popular, specially for the guitar showcase.
Btw, they usually fall into math rock territory, modern math rock though, which nowadays sounds way more jazzier than rockier, specially for their chord selections. Not talking about ii V I though
Yeah, if you ever wanna expand your chord flavor knowledge, learn a few CHON riffs. Lol
Would love to see some1 look at Piglet.
@@6ic6ic6ic Oh, yeah. Piglet are so under the radar
@@HauntaskhanHYPNOSIS They have the most wtf ways to play a simple major 7 chord
Maj 7 = jazz lol
Chon has a really good live performance over on Audiotree's RUclips channel if you ever wanted to check them out some more. Glad you enjoyed your first exposure!
I've always felt a lot of Return to Forever/Chick Correa influence in their music
That's how I discovered them. Them and Elephant Gym, which is another new favorite math rock band.
Their performance with The fall of Troy is just amazing
Their performance with The fall of Troy is just amazing
Their performance with The fall of Troy is just amazing
Its crazy how they can make such technical music extremely accessible. This is just good easy listening no matter who you are
Chon is basically math rock. Lots of math rock bands sound similar to this (Elephant Gym is a favorite of mine from Taiwan). The way I think about the genre is that it takes the exotic chord progressions and rhythms of jazz, usually with a tone/aesthetic that's also closer to jazz, but puts it into a more structured and less improvised "rock/metal" form to show off the complexity. I recommended Hiromi as I think she's a good example where you have those aspects PLUS a lot of "traditional" improvisation. It's a cool mix.
Wait, what? Are you talking about Hiromi Uehara? What she has to do with math rock?
@@icipher6730 I thought it was pretty clear from my post. Math rock is heavily inspired by the exotic chords/progressions of jazz, but puts it in more "structured" rock/prog form often with complex rhythms and doesn't have jazz's emphasis on heavy improv. Hiromi actually studied composition so her works have that similarly "structured" element, but she still emphasizes improv as well. So I mentioned her as an artist who balances those complex rhythms/progressions and structures while still including improv. I recommended her live rendition at the Tokyo Blue Note of Move elsewhere, and in that piece the opening rhythmic motif with those odd scale runs very much sounds like it could be a math rock piece, until she goes into the lengthy improv section.
Jakub Zytecki will be lit in the next episode.
Even his "simple" tunes like sunflower for sureee
Hes so damn good!!!
Yussss
Yeah chon is the jazzier aspect of math rock so much that math rock purists sometimes don't take them. Their earliest chon project was more distorted and rock orientated. Now they exist in my mind in the same place as guys like Owane. Regardless of where it lands genre wise I love it.
Honestly even though I enjoy their earlier work more I love that with each new release there's less crunch/distortion on the guitars & more Lo-Fi electronic elements brought in lol
What bands do those "purist" like? lol
@@iooosef6006 well the traditional math rock shouts are things like Don caballero or Giraffes Giraffes. Amazing bands in their own rights that inspired the guys from chon but they're a bit crunchier, more distorted tones or just playing with tones in general. A lot more chaotic. The argument is that CHON has more mathy elements than really being a pure math rock group. The whole wave of mathy bands tends to grind the gears of purists because you end up with everything from ichika to polyphia to chon to straight up emo songs all being called math rock. I think it's a silly hill to die on with CHON especially seeing as this is the band made Knot.
so for math rock we have Covet, Tricot, Piglet, This Town Needs Guns... And to bring out some older recs, we had Night Verse with their instrumental metalcore, and Cynic which is kind of a jazz-fusion death metal band
Don't forget Tera Melos. +1 on Tricot tho
Don't forget toe, Elephant Gym, Floral, LITE, Totorro, Monobody, Via Luna, and dios trio
Chon actually listens to a lot of jazz fusion stuff that's what Erick (one of guitar player from Chon) said. 😎
I've started listening to Chon after I discovered Polyphia around 7 months ago and love most their songs. And if you are going to revisit Plini I'd like to recommend Sunhead or Kind
Next plini will be silenium forest. Storytelling tracks.
@@Isaiah_McIntosh selenium forest is a great song so I wouldn't mind it at all. Personally I love all of Plini's song, he's too good
Love your reactions, could you do Covet - Falkor
Kristopher Saldana yes!
Hell yes! Covet please!!
Well if you love this then...
Shibuya by Covet
Goodbye by Toe (try to catch a live version of you can)
The Peter Criss Jazz by Don Caballero
Graduation Song by Murphy Radio
you gotta hear Chon's other song "Story" and that amazing polyrythm at the end of the song man. first time i heard it i was knocked off my socks.
Chon - Perfect Pillow please it's so good
react to shibuya by covet! they're a great instrumental band (i know you said it lost the poll but maybe it'd win another time) lol
React to Owane - Rock is Too Heavy since you enjoyed Chon!
Love your reactions man!
I think one of the best facts of this band is that when they first released their early demos their drummer Nathan (who's the guitarist Mario's younger brother) was only like 14 at the time of their formation lol very talented young guy.
Their sound has always evolved with each release which is fun to explore, they go from a very straightforward fast-paced Progressive Rock/Metal inspired style to a more Jazz-Fusion Math-Rock style & much like Polyphia they've incorporated more Electronic elements into their songs throughout the years. They've also collabed with a bunch of artists (ie. Javier Reyes from Animals As Leaders' solo project 'Mestis', Polyphia, Covet, Mouse on the Keys, Cocainejesus, etc)
Also just a note that the introduction scene of this music video contains a snippet of one of their more Lo-Fi electronic inspired tracks 'Feel This Way'
RIP Jumpy the dog
Jakub Zytecki - Sunflower or Disperse - Gabriel (guitar playthrough) (Jakub ex-band)
You must check Jakub, he is at god level as guitarist and composer ;)
Yes!! I just found Jakub not long ago im addicted
Yes Jakub is so creative.
Their guitarist Mario was in a metal band called To Each His Own which is how i discovered Chon (I still listen from time to time just because of Mario's solos). They released a small demo as a side project and I was blown away. Especially since I had literally NEVER heard an instrumental band that I completely 100% enjoyed. Highly recommend checking out the music video for My Final Despair by To Each His Own for anybody who wants to see a young Mario shred!
You've reacted to everyone I've wanted you to. NOW I WANT MORE
So glad I got to see these guys with Between the Buried and Me and Intervals back in December. Amazing show. I used to listen to the Grow album on repeat when I was doing school work.
Pleeeease react to Owane I think you'll really like it, guitars, drums, keys and even some saxophone! Tracks I recommend: Love Juice, Saturday Ends, Rock is Too Heavy. Cheers.
Yea owane and chon should be going together more than plini and chon. Great modern mathy jazz groups.
Yeah man Owane is killer! Don't know why he doesn't get as much love as some of these other similar artists.
Rock is Too Heavy is gooood
You've gotta do an album reaction! On a compositional level, some of my favorite albums of the decade have to be:
1. Haken - The Mountain
2. Native Construct - Quiet World.
3. BTBAM - Parallax 2.
This was great. I’d love to see a Perfect Pillow reaction!
If you ever give this song another review I’d highly recommend one of their recent live versions of this, it has a bass solo and all the instruments are super clear to hear in it
Went to a show to see The Dear Hunter. Stood still for 30 minutes or so as Chon completely blew me away. Feels so much heavier live! Feels a bit more prog metal live
This was a great video! Don’t know if you’ll see this or not but I’d highly recommend “Book” or “Pitch Dark” for their more jazzy sounds and anything from their first 2 ep’s for their more rock/metal sounds, whether for another reaction or outside of videos.
interesting to see what you thought of these.. they've got a very cool sound - immense musicians.. but it doesn't captivate me for long enough.
ps: 'agent fesco' - 'see hell' (when you're ready for some nice vocals again ;))
The drums are insane!
You should check Chon cover some Deathmetal song (Necrophagist), featuring Alex Rudinger
More chon please!! I recommend "checkpoint" or "continue" for more chill jazzy chon tracks
Was hanging out with these kids when they were in metal bands so... metal start for sure
If you like chon then check out either Floral or toe.
Every song off the "Floral EP" is amazing even to math rocks standards.
If I had to draw a line between chon and the stuff you've reacted to before it's super technical skillful guitar lead musicianship that plays with time feel.
Toska are a great instrumental band - Abomasum is a great display of their musicianship and compositional strengths.
Saw them open for Conquering Dystopia and Animals as Leaders several years ago. Amazing show of instrumental bands.
Excellent choice!
Two things: The song in the beginning is called feel this way, off of the same album. And the next CHON song should definitely be Rosewood, such a great song
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on a group like Snarky Puppy. I imagine you'd be a big fan of their stuff, if you aren't already
Yeah I think he would really like them too. I've been mentioning Snarky Puppy for a while in the comments.
i am more impressed by the dog's skateboarding abilities... and well ability to do everything! but damn, incredible musicianship on display there, i love the feel of the drummer!
Here's a suggestion for a song that isn't metal (that i've made before, but you just need to check this out, if not just for the experience) : Reso - Tabris
PLease do Jakub Zytecki - letters. One of the most talented unique players today!
Yes!!!
The bassist on that record, if I'm remembering right, is Anthony Crawford who's played with Holdsworth and a dozen other killer jazz/fusion players
The bass in this song is a banger with a sub
If you're willing to go back in time, Mumps by Hatfield and The North is a masterpiece and I think the style is right up your alley.
Chugger - Turning point. A Groove metal band from sweden. I think you and many others would enjoy hearing their music.
CHON is one of my favourite bands.
To anyone looking for something new: Casimir Liberski - new life, or the song morph. 67.
This probably won't get reacted to, but there is another great instrumental band called Vitalism. They are a Brazilian metal band and they really incorporate it into their music. Highly reccomend Pagan Pt. 2 or Yami Obi
Yes!
Vitalism is getting some traction -- it's up to 6 requests counting yours. I'll get to them one day.
@@CriticalReactions i know there's other good songs from them. But the two he suggested are good! Yami is a little more straightforward in my opinion. But more textured, more colors maybe a good way to describe it. Pagan more technical, evolves a little more as the song plays through. I've used both songs to show my kids what dynamics are all about. Especially from the drummers contributions.
But since typing my reply. I haven't gotten the main "hook" for Yami Obi out of my head. Lol
@@CriticalReactions don't sleep on ayahuasca either. Song is f-ing killer. I would almost suggest doing 2 or 3 song reviews for a lot of these bands. Going for a journey over the course of a few songs. Getting a more complete picture, revisiting and then analyzing.
Please react to Jakub Zytecki - Sunflower. He’s one of the best out there.
Famous Last Words - The Show Must Go On
I’m 90% sure every member of this band is self taught. I’m positive the drummer was self taught cuz Nathan camarena (the drummer) was taught by his brother Mario(one of the guitarists) how to play drums when he was 11ish. The bassist is also a camarena brother (Esiah camarena). Erick Hansel is the other guitarist. So mostly a family band who all learned from each other.
They all had teachers. Only for the first album were mario and Erik the primary teachers for nathan. After that nathan got a drum teacher. I'm blanking on the name but you'll probably see people talking about it in the comments of most of nathan's drum playthroughs. His teacher is also frequently credited as a writer on tracks. Mario and Erik frequently talk about initially leaning with "seth metal" (I'm probably getting that second name wrong) for the basic physical skills like sweeping and so on.
@@Isaiah_McIntosh yeah Nathan's teacher is brian evans, he was supposed to be chon's drummer but it didn't work out so they teached nathan instead
One of their biggest influences was Necrophagist interestingly
Please react to Fallujah - Sapphire if you are interested in atmospheric tech death
Dude. Checkpoint or No Signal. Those are their best songs, FAR and AWAY. Please check them out!!! :)
React to The Physics House Band for some more “is this jazz or rock?”!
Great track, more Chon would be great. and as a couple others have said Owane is also sicc
For another artist on the jazz-fusion side, you should try Hiromi. I'd recommend this live version of Move: ruclips.net/video/1rxYw7Y45Eo/видео.html
If you enjoy jazz rock, you should definitely check Thank You Scientist - Son a of serpent !
You seem melted away by the math :D makes me so happy to witness appreciation.
People consider chon math rock I'd say it's math fusion :p but labels only limit, sure they categorize ideas but they usually just limit.
I think I saw an interview where Mario, one of the guitarists, stated they taught his brother Nathan, the drummer, how to play this type of music when he was 13 and he had never played drums before
That's amazing! Kids have such a knack for picking up new skills so 13 was a good age to start learning more complex drum rhythms -- old enough to appreciate the raw skill and talent of it all but young enough to quickly make those mind maps.
Car Bomb - Antipatterns
Yoo brotha i think you should react to dadi freyr
One of the songs i truly enjoy is "skippitr"
Or something. Hes icelandic!
Mario (one of the guitar players) and the drummer are brothers, Mario actually taught his brother how to play the drums
I know everyone has their influences but to me Chon was either the huge influence to so many modern proggy shred fusion bands or just the beginning of a wave but to me they were the first. Or maybe fall of Troy
Fallujah - Sapphire. It's unbelievable. :)
if you liked CHON then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to Elephant Gym - Finger their performance on Audiotree !!!! Similar w the math rock vibes and they are also so so talented!
Brother please. Should you revisit CHON, please review "Pitch Dark"
Hey man, do the spiral architect - Insect reaction. You'll love it
Please review I Built The Sky - Up Into The Ether
STAGE KIDS. I love Chon, but I think Stage Kids is on another level. Anything from their latest EP “Recess” or their latest album “Intra Mental” is timeless to me. 321 has one of their few music videos, so that might do well for a RUclips video format. Huge recommend to anything Stage Kids.
Everyone is left speechless their first time listening to chon haha.
Probably more mainstream than the things you've reviewed, but I'd love to see you react to Pneuma by TOOL
Correct if I'm wrong my musical friends, but didn't Chon and Intervals tour together?
Yeah they toured with BTBAM as well in November. Saw them in Massachusetts.
@@lupe_g2 very nice, ive never seen either of them live . I would love to after this lockdown is over
@@jakelee8789 Dude. CHON is one of the best live experiences ever. I've seen them 4 times now. Def vibe out and slow mosh. Slow moshing to CHON is pretty much one of my favorite concert experiences because everyone is just chill and vibing out. The atmosphere is unreal.
Most recent was North American Fall Tour and it was phenomenal

Also, a band that does not get much love and I'd like you to check out, Chimaira - Everything You Love or Save Ourselves
Car Bomb is pretty fucking metal, but I'm sure you'll be blown away, def check them out.
Bubble Dream from CHON if you want another song. For Car Bomb check out Gratitude.

Chon germinated as a math rock band. They are a big fan of jazz music even bringing on guys like Kenny G to shows lol. However their guitarship takes a lot of influence mechanically from bands like necrophagist.
R.I.P Jumpy the dog.
Not a fan of reaction vids these days but if CHON is in it, i'll fucking watch it \m/
I've been in Jazz band and know how to play this song all the way as well, but I dont see how this is jazz at all. It's one of my favorite songs to play! But it's mostly diatonic apart from one A#7 secondary dominant :s I think the beautiful thick voicings maybe sound like Jazz but it's actually very far from it imo. Anyways I enjoyed your video.
Yeah, you'll like Owane. Or Knower.
Yayy for Math Rock. 😁😁😁
Do checkout polyphia and plini if ypu dig this genre.
Hes done both plini and polyphia before. He really really liked plini. Polyphia he wished was more conventionally melodic but really respected their mastery of playing.
12:14 what if i told you they came from a tech metal background xD
React to jaws by sleeptoken
I hope you can check out VITALISM PAGAN 2!!
I love how you realized that the intro wasn’t the actual song LMAO
Ok
to me it's more jazz fusion or even progressive rock/metal. Jazz is so dependent on improvisation and I think the drums don't have any jazz "swing" at all, more a rock feel, a more solid straight beat (despite the complexity)!
Again, my opinion!
On that note, I'm gonna suggest anything by Pat Metheny, great jazz guitarist you probably heard of! :)
Improve is a cornerstone of Jazz performance but it is not a part of Jazz composition (aside from setting aside solo sections for the performers). And I think I mentioned the lack of "swing eighths" in the drum but to be fair that really only applies to Swing, a sub-genre of Jazz. Rock is another Jazz subgenre and it barely swings at all. Note: Jazz Rock is different from Rock and Roll.
Thanks for the Pat Metheny recommendation. I actually haven't kept up with many modern Jazz players/composers as I tend to stick to the standards and the pioneers out of habit. I definitely need to check him out though. I just saw that he has 20 Grammys and his brother plays Flugelhorn!
