"Intimate" is the best way to describe Chon for sure. That's always the word that comes to mind when I hear "Rosewood." Thanks for giving them a listen!
Been a fan of theirs for a decade now and it's one of the handful of bands I always come back to. Every one of their songs can uniquely put me in a headspace and I have a lot of emotions and memories tied to them. Changed me as a musician and also as a listener. Your videos have been really entertaining so far. It's refreshing when a reaction channel actually has a reaction.
Chon sounds more organic that Polyphia, so I would suspect that it should be easier for them to perform live shows with a minimal loss of fidelity (or even be better)
They are hella tight live, which is even more amazing seeing how little gain and distortion they use with their guitars. Watch the audiotree session or the rooftop session
Chon was absolutely FANTASTIC live, I saw them with Polyphia in SD on their Super Chon Bros 2 tour, and while Polyphia of course played very well, a very large portion of their performance was somewhat overshadowed by their backing tracks. Polyphia almost felt like a band playing over some other music, whereas Chon more so felt like a band performing with a few additions underneath in the background. Still doesn't change how fantastic the players in Polyphia are.
I think it was on the player's pick podcast that mario and eric (the two guitarists) said they would enter a writing a mode where they get in the room together for hours and hours for as many days as necessary to hammer out their stuff. Bassists for chon tend to change per record and touring cycle although back here they were working with drew nowadays they mainly work with Mario's cousin. In the early days they would've written the drums for nathan (drummer/Mario's younger brother) as they taught him to play so they could have someone on the demo tape. Nowadays I think drums are written mostly by Nathan's teacher but nathan clearly has his own ideas for some of the songs when you compare the live performance to record. So the guess that it's a lot more traditionally constructed was a good one. It would be cool to hear you check out Knot by them. It's a personal favourite, although you probably get enough suggestions already.
yupp pretty much except for the bass in the last 2 albums is written and recorded by anthony crawford, but esiah camarena (he's a camarena brother too not cousin) is the one who plays it live!
Between Polyphia and Chon you're hitting some of my favorite bands with these videos! As someone who's not a musician I love learning the technical reason why I like these bands so much. Keep it up
Yeah that friendship kind of feeling is so precent in his stuff... Another good songs by them are: Fall, Fluffy, Waterslide, Bubble Dream, Puddle, Story...
The cool thing about this channel is that it explores and gives visibility to not so usual (but good) music. I hope you get all the views and subs you can get...
if i remember correctly either the guitarists, or the band as a whole, learned their instruments together that helped create their incredible cohesion. food for thought.
If you would like to react to some more jazzy/mathy, Chon vibes of a different order, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE could you react to some Toe and Elephant Gym? I'd recommend Toe's tracks, "All I Understand Is That I Don't Understand", "C" and "Goodbye (Album Version)" and Elephant Gym's tracks "Finger" and "Underwater".
just react to all of "my idle plot..." and i agree with the guy below, piglet might be hard to come across high quality recordings but i would absolutely love to watch you dissect "little bubble, where are you going?". dilute is another band you would have fun with, but it might be too out there for the common viewer
I remember seeing an interview they said they wanted to try arranging like a piano where the guitars play like 2 hands on a piano and you can see it they way they play together
i come to watch geebz just to chill, i mean i really think this is like type of music (math rock, djent, progresive instrumental, jazz metal, ambience rock, wtv im a layman) which i love is going to become a movement and will be mainstream, and will be in history books
I enjoyed this song so much, never heard of these guys. My ears were so grateful. And very happy for the extra insight to help me out as to what I'm hearing
I strongly recommend Rivers Dancing by Gordian Knot. The song as a whole is a beautiful journey and the outro solo work is incredible. Their bassist Sean Malone recently passed and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest prog bassists. You will not be disappointed. Love your reactions brother!
Aren’t they more or less Fam? Two brothers, cousin, longtime close friend. With their musical closeness everything the do is nearly intuitive. The almost know instinctively how to move things along with each other. It’s as if they’re eating a meal and each is ok with sampling from each other’s plate. They all get done at the same time and each is full. Simply put the groups dynamic is in near perfect synch.
So to me, my like 10 second synopsis of Chon is that they are 10/10 EPIC modern elevator music. Like they're so sooooo good as just not very produced, absolute stellar punchy and to-the-point elevator music. Like SO AMBIENT and absolutely perfect mood-setting, background music. Which is 1000% a compliment, no disrespect. It's SO universal and listenable and that is honestly a compliment. SO happy you did a reaction video to them and you nailed it :)
What does it for me is that there is almost no distortion on their guitars. It really shows skill when you're not hiding stuff like this behind a heavily distorted guitar. I remember watching Alex Rudinger cover a song by Necrophagist, and the dudes from Chon recorded the guitar tracks for the cover. There is, once again, next to no distortion on the guitars. It blows me away how clean they're playing at all times.
Hey Geebz! I'd love to see you revisit Chon! I think they're a really interesting band, admittedly a little more chill than what you normally cover, but it's cool to listen to you dissect the instrumentation. Also, if I may, in your Dancers to a Discordant System video today you mentioned suggesting new bands for your next 52-week run. I would love it if you could check out Mother Mother. They're a really interesting indie-rock band from Canada and I think you'll enjoy their unique vocal melodies in particular ;) "O My Heart" is a good album to start with. Keep up the great work! Aloha!
I love that you're reacting to all these bands I've been following! If I could recommend anyone else to listen too I'd probably say: Covet, Elephant Gym or Tricot! Please keep doing these though they're great!
As much love as the guitar work gets, all deserved Ofcourse. The drummer steals the show for me, he really drives and completes everything Chon is not Chon without him

These guys covered Necrophagist's song Stabwound, which is pretty great. It's kind of funny because their guitars were still too clean sounding for that song, haha. I wouldn't make a video about it, but it's neat to see that these guys take influences from all over (And you can actually hear the shred/metal influence in their playing): ruclips.net/video/cPTJzeEqkFs/видео.html
I Highly Recommend Covet. Literally anything from their discography. CHON and Covet are both Math Rock(specifically Western Math Rock, Japan also has Math Rock but it's less prog more Jazz so it usually gets called Eastern Math Rock)
I asked this before but I'm going to keep doing it. Could you look at Aviator by Polyphia? It also features Jason Richardson who you've probably heard of from your comments.

Polyphia I've seen 3 times and they killed it each time.
Chon was absolutely FANTASTIC live, I saw them with Polyphia in SD on their Super Chon Bros 2 tour, and while Polyphia of course played very well, a very large portion of their performance was somewhat overshadowed by their backing tracks.
