The SoCal quartet rolled into town and guitarists Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel set aside a few minutes to hang with PG’s Perry Bean and go over their pedal-heavy setups before headlining a jam-packed gig at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge.
Mario calls San Diego-based teacher, Seth Hollander, his guitar guru because he taught him and Erick their tapping techniques, got them into the Ibanez family, picked out the DiMarzio pickups in Mario’s Ibanez, and even painted Mario’s RG series axe seen above.
While this looks just like another RG series Ibanez, this is actually a (tentatively named) AZ series prototype that Erick recently scored from the company’s L.A. Custom Shop. What Hansel does tell us in the interview is that this proto has smaller frets than a typical RG and has special-designed humbuckers from Seymour Duncan.

This is like watching a new 'cool' stepdad trying to bond with the stepson in the best way possible.
😂😂😂😂
gnarly dude
THOSE VOICINGS ARE GNARRRRLY DEEWWWD
Does a no-comply 379 sexchange inward heelflip
@@cristopheracevedo4254 this is an underrated comment
Those were some sweet voicings my dude!
cmon. Perry is legit. Smart and geniune. more people should be genuine.
The tuner is the secret to his tone
tbh, it's something a lot of people overlook. lol
Ugh. I just spent the last 4 years looking for a tuner with good tone. Still no luck.
Love having a buffered tuner. Really makes a difference.
yessir
@@therewasascene What is the difference?
The best vanished band of all time.
Why vanished?
@@thomas8019they’re gone man
The interviewer is just efficient in what he asks. He doesn't dick around with stupid questions, and he gets them out quickly. Also, he's a good listener. I'm sure artists appreciate this style much more than people who just make corny jokes and stuff. And they seemed to enjoy explaining everything.
But he nervously talks while the guests are trying to answer, like he's on coke.
@@tonelocrian Idk man, if I was a touring musician, I would totally be down to do an interview with this guy. He's just there to ask quickly then pay attention. Cool guy in my book.
Mario just sold a lot of Warden compressors
its a amazing pedal all earthquake pedals are
I'm certainly looking to see if my local shop has one I can demo tonight
I have the compressor and the Depths. They are both amazing pedals.
I bought one.
@Eddie Gooden the warden is an optical compressor, so it will compress more subtle with less squash than a ross type like keeley's
Interviewer comes off like he crushed like 3 red bulls.
He comes across like that because Mario and Eric are so quiet lol
And because he's always like that.
Their selling red bull by the gram now?
I’ve watched other rig run downs with him he def seams like he’s on a lil Rick James
comes off like he´s got a crush on those dudes
now I can steal their tone! (evil math rock laugh)

Yeah and learn all those crazy jazz chords 😂

let me tell you something. I want a black labrador and I'm going to call it Chon.
He makes a good point about their compressors, if you have ever tried playing any of their stuff they have a lot of tapping patterns that are pulled off, or hammered on, or tapped at the 21st fret and you legit cannot hear them without compression, for example the sleeping tea outro.
This. I’ve never had a pedal before so I’ve been doing the tapping and hammer ons and stuff raw, and I think I’ve gotten acceptably consistent with it but you literally do need compression as a human being to really pull it off lol. So I just ordered my first pedal, the Warden :)
Anyone wanting to play this kind of stuff absolutely needs a compressor, there's no way to make these taps/pull offs/hammer ons audible otherwise without using tons of distortion. Especially their stuff that's all clean tones, like most of their S/T album. It's really tough to get that level of compression without losing attack and getting a squished sound though, so I really want to look into this model.
@@solargarlic1 U can't forget the booster too. I'm not a wizard when it comes to pedals but compressors compress your signal (lol we all know that) but boosters boost your signal. So basically u can seriously get a more audible tone and compress it!
You can tell this dude really loves and respects Chon.
Who doesn't unless they 've never heard them?
Finally a closer look at their gear. I've been waiting for this for ages!
Yes since those EarthQuakerDevices vids !
Yeah. In the past I heard they just used compressors and Ibanez but not enough info for me. Now I`m satisfied.
Gomez Addams go watch your Scott Herman vids you nub
Definitely seemed so in contrast because it seemed to me the Chon boys really don't give a flying piss rat about button and nobs, they just wanna turn up and play. Don't think they get the same hard on as we all do sat here watching these rig run downs lol
Its like the interviewer keeps forgetting and remembering that he left the oven on, while still trying to do this interview hahaha
😂
Really liking that the past couple videos had the players actually play their instruments to show off their tone. Definitely make that a thing if possible. Love this show!
I always laugh when bands like this get interviewed, because they're totally like me. Absolutely hyper focused on their hobby, but near useless with communicating with regular humans.
EorAmbient yeah you guys are so much better than everyone else
McSpankey normal as in neurotypical
I don't think it's that. This interviewer feels like he is anxious and on the edge all the time while trying to be intimate and sociable. It's irritating, really.
Yeah yeah, you’re special
Damn. Haters. I hear you man. Have you seen them talking about their signature guitars? It’s this to the nth. They play like absolute beasts but not so great at the chit chat :)
I love how they are so bad at explaining their gear but that’s only because they focus more on what they’re playing rather than what they’re playing through. They rely more on their own playing than their gear
Yeah dude they play almost completely raw. Look at their first record. You can hear every little flaw in their playing because theres no extra reverb or heavy distortion to hide it.
Boi they using hella pedals lol
Knowing your gear is important too.. imagine Dark Side of the Moon with no guitar effects
@@daoyang223gaht damn if there is flaw in that playing I don’t wanna hear flawless. Seriously though their playing is unbelievably clean in that first album. Point out a moment that you hear a flaw and I’ll eat my words
I like that he actually demonstrated some of his tones and effects. Wish every video had that.
Their sound is just so perfect. JESUS. I watch this video frequently just to try to figure out how they get that crystal clean tone.
The Warden is an optical compressor that runs on a standard 9 volt, but has a charge pump so it internally runs at 18 volts, so that gives you a lot of headroom and doesn't effect your attack as drastically as VCA or fet comps do imo.
Glad to see this! Fell in love with this band recently thanks to a friend, really glad to see what's going on.
I've been waiting to finally see their rigs. Now their sound totally makes sense.
Yeah, all this time I thought they were using wizard piss and dolphin jizz to get their sound. Turns out it was actually amps and pedals. Who knew?
I like how introverted and chill they are & that they dont have much to say, but have a lot to express through their music.
Anyone else immediately recognize the opening chord to “Can’t Wait” when Mario turned on the The Depths pedal?
LMAOO yeah
That chord is in so many of their songs
My wallet is crying now.
That matchless is so beautiful.
Been waiting for thissss
nice setup of a great sounding band!
I didn't know Dane Cook did gear rundowns?
Jacob Laine THAT'S who he reminds me of!
Bro hahahaha i was scrolling through trying to see if anyone else thought that
😂😂😂
He does sound just like Dane cook lol
He totally does sound like him
The interviewer reminds me of the hyper UPS guy on Mad TV. I love it. Great video!
I love how Mario said when their band started out they didn't really use pedals(aside from a tuner) for years. That tells me that they created the heart of their sound the same way many of the Old School guitarists did(player, guitar, amp). The effects are just that; effects. That's good stuff. #respect
Interviewer is making me feel anxious...
Same
Cool. Matchless is a super fine amp that is a Nashville recording staple now, it has unbelievable beautiful tones and several different models to chose from.
cant we all just thank mr Seth Hollander for chon?! thank you seth!
i think the interview was great. keep it coming perry!
Because of this guy.
“The warden” is now on my board.
I love chon but i also love really complex lemonade stand jingles too
Perry is hyped, but Mario is also suuuuper passive and timid.
I always dig the vast majority of the Rig Rundowns you guys do, and not that this is your fault, but I wish that more of the guitarists would just run through the tones and how the pedals sound that they use. Even the little 2 seconds Mario hits here are enough lol
I dunno guys, the interviewer’s high energy actually doesn’t bother me at all lol. I love Chon but he is really helping things along, I was so relieved when he asked Erik to maybe turn some of them on haha.
I watched this and immediately ordered The Warden compression pedal before finishing the video lol
Great Interview PremierGuitar Subscribed
That guitar is beautiful.
Whoa, I know Seth, he's a badass dude! His guitar dips and finishing are next level. Standup guy.
Wasn't expecting the Ibanez mini chorus pedal to sound so good
Now i'm interested in eqd warden and arrows.
I have a mp fgc, and was wondering how it differs from eqd warden, and like what's better for overall optical compressor.
Also, i'm planning to buy a lgw for a mild-mid dirty boost, but came across eqd arrows.
Anyone tried out the pedals? Thanks for replying in advance!
He seems so chill...
Can anyone tell me the model of that Microphone ? (the one in the amp)
They were using orange amps a few days after this in the UK
Chons recommendation on compressor is better than any review
I remember 3 years ago when chon used to just run their shit straight through their amps haha. Not even sure they used pedals pre grow, someone clarify for me.
Tyler Potts correct
Yeah they were straight prog lol
great band
What's this pedal do? I don't know.....lol
awesome video thanks premier guitar
YesSSs!! Finally
Its really cool because theyre like the same guitarist
Such a good interview!
"those voicings are narly dude" 4:11
I saw this comment, but hearing the video still made me LOL.
That guitar body. Wow! Make that a production model please!
I'm guessing to use small watt amps they have to run it through the venue's PA system or am I wrong?
Curious as to what dimarzios are in the floral print ibanez
Certified Nashville classic
anyone know what gauge strings they use?
Thank god they are not using AXe FX. Thank you Chon!

YES!!
I’m here after ordering Mario’s new Signature Ibanez, the MAR10... and I’m really just trying to see what other gear I ‘need’ 😰
Please please please please please try to get BAD SUNS on here. I'll be waiting for it starting now!
The funny thing with chon. I noticed, is they got super technical and upbeat music, but when they do vocals, it seems to be pop related. Especially the new album. It isn't even like jazz singers or experimental singers they got. But like pop/r&b/hip hop singers. Or what I call club music.
Life has many doors, Chon boys.
James Tangal Damn you, Ralph

FINALLY THE SECRET TO THAT TONE
Do an hour version Like aal and periphery. Boy do they deserve it.
Yessssssss
At 8:45, where did the ts808 come from?
That floral guitar is beautiful.
mario is handeling tht guys vibe very well
What's the interviewer on and where can I get some
I'm like that too with my gear. I won't go on and on explaining what it does. I just know it sounds good & I get to play the damn thing.
Man is there anyone who like this interviewer? It seems like everyone hates this guy. He needs so more love.
Perry is like the sales kid at Zumiez who's nervous because the DM is visiting the store. Lol
7:01 is sooooooooo cleannnnn
Chon rules
FINALLY
3:56 , you’re welcome
Hey Premium Guitar, if you could do a rig rundown of Sean Lennon's gear from the Lennon Claypool Delirium, I bet that would be a cool one. Hell you could do Less' stuff while you're at it. I'd sure like to get a look at that.
Where's the link to this show
Please do a Dinosaur Pile-Up Rig Rundown!
After watching this video for the 6th time I realized that this is the first time I’ve seen Mario without Vans on
What strings do they use?
interviewers questions are on point.
Can anyone clarify the Ibanez model that Erick is playing?
ibanez az
Anyone else going to the Thrice Circa Survive shows? They’re opening!!
Perry does a good job. Some of these interviews are like pulling teeth.
What song was Mario playing on his chorus demo 7:00
Book
Hey guys is it possible to use a mooer yellow compensator instead? Can't afford a warden :v
Strings gauge?
Does anyone know what he's playing at 3:56?
Sleepy tea
Interviewer is comfort eagle
What kind of shoes is Mario wearing?
If (Sandy) Alex G ever comes to Nashville PLEASE do a rig rundown
Animal Collective would be a cool one too, I've always wondered what their gear does
go chonny boyss
The flowers remind me of the JEM FP series.
