  • Dan's back! Everybody, Dan's back! Go Crazy! Alright, calm down.
    It's murder most foul! A cacophony of crime! A Monty Python of ending retcons! The three guys talk about 1985's Clue and how(s) it holds up and hows it don't for an hour and a half. Abe tries to get them to dissect the jokes. They're all into Tim Curry and Martin Mull (spoilers). You'll have to listen to the episode to hear whether or not it was developed around Tim Curry or not and how his role was crafted. Also, the hosts kill each other right after the podcast! They're dead now! No more podcasts! It was Michael with the gun in the microphone!

    Another piece of Clue Trivia - during the editing process the Writer/Director realized that the 'three endings in three theatres' was going to be a disaster, so he cut together the '3 versions' ending that the movie currently has. He attempted to convince Landis and the studio that the audience was going to hate feeling like they missed something, and to just send the 'all 3' cut to theatres. They went with the gimmick, and the film did not do well. They were so set on the gimmick, in fact, that when the movie first played on HBO, it was still just 'one ending' - although in the guide, they were nice enough to list which ending it was, A, B, or C. The 'all 3' ending didn't get used until the home video release.

    MURDER BY DEATH!
    I'm so surprised it was never mentioned because they're speculating so much about the context of the film and why it was the way it was, and so much of it is extremely similar to Murder By Death. The opening part, the mystery, the characters, the cast, the house, the comedy, all clearly inspired by Murder By Death. Eileen Brennan is even a main character in both films!

    I've always held this belief for Clue: only watch it with sincerity twice, first for the first time when it's all new and you don't know all the twists and jokes, the second time to see if you can pick up clues along the way. Otherwise you just need to relax and enjoy it, every time after that second time you already know what happened, you just want to revisit the memories

    Hasbro had one great idea...cross promote toys using comic books AND cartoons. It was the perfect storm because Reagan had gotten rid of some law about children's programming that banned such practices. I went from Speed Racer to Starblazers to 30 minute commercials for plastic toys. Yes, the 80's were the wild west in that regard...GI Joe, Transformers, Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Silver Hawks, Thundercats, Bravestar, Gobots, Jem and the Holograms and several more.

Never seen Clue I just miss you guys

  • @eventhorizon
    @eventhorizon 4 года назад +1

    Yeah- I'm not even going to lie, Clue is just as good to me now as it was then, but I was LITTLE when I saw it the first time. I partially saw Legend in the movies (I was 7 and got so hysterical at the unicorn stuff at the start we had to leave, though later I wish I had stayed)- and I honestly don't remember which I saw first- but when my mom told me the Devil in Legend was the same as "the butler" in Clue- I still remember my brain melting.
    I've absolutely have loved Tim Curry since Clue- he's always been the best part of anything I've seen him in- he throws himself so completely into everything. Wadsworth would have been SO easy to fuck up, he played it perfectly... and EVERY time it gets to him doing the "I had to make her stop screaming" line- I will laugh outloud just like I did the first time...

  • @ethansloan
    @ethansloan 4 года назад +6

    I have a theory for why they softened the line into "I'm going home to make love to my wife" or whatever he said instead of "fuck."
    When it was released in theaters, you only got one random ending. If the only instance of the word "fuck" was only in 1/3 random versions of the film, that could have affected the rating in a strange way. Like, the movie would be both rated PG and R (I think this was before PG13).

    •Obligatory note that Dan sounds super weird. Took me a minute to even believe it was him.
    •I do come across a shocking number of people who have never seen this film, but I’ve never heard anyone say they hated it. I adore it, personally, and will rewatch it at every opportunity.
    •According to IMDb, Lee Ving was cast exactly because of his punny name.
    •The evidence they were being blackmailed with was in an envelope. The solution never was.
    •You absolutely need all three endings. They all build on each other, and it bothers me that the DVD even offers the option to show you only one at random. When you choose to watch all three, it still pauses for a second when you get to that point in the film as the player sorts out what to show you. It’s a small thing, but still a notable detriment to every viewing. I’m glad I can just stream it now.
    •Growing up, it took me forever to even notice the dog shit bit. I do appreciate it now, but I still need to poke a hole in Dan’s defence of it. Tim Curry specifically states that all the windows have bars, and when Mr Boddy tries to smash through the conservatory, a Doberman jumps against the glass. Not even the same dog, which I always found strange.
    •This was always on my shortlist of films that should NEVER be remade, so I hate that it now is. I will probably (eventually) see it anyway, just to know, but I am perfectly prepared, and even expecting to walk away and immediately pretend it doesn’t exist.
    •After seeing Daniel slowly devolve into madness over jigsaw puzzles on Twitter, I started cackling hysterically as soon as he brought them up now.

    The primary thing that appears to have been lost on all of you is that this is a parody of classic murder mysteries - specifically Agatha Christie's 10 Little Indians, which is the best selling mystery of all time. Searching the mansion in pairs, looking for a murderer among a party of strangers (comprised of disparate individuals) and most importantly the exposition by one person at the end to the group are all directly taken from 10 little Indians as well as others (House on Haunted Hill featuring Vincent Price also follows this format closely). If you watch the 1965 film adaptation of 10 Little Indians you'll get a lot more of the parody. Also, all of the stabs at communism and politics was a 80's tounge-in-cheek look at the 50's McCarthy era content in classic film in the US, not heavy handed politics. As a fan of classic mystery and comedy this movie marries all of the things I love. It is incredibly witty fast paced. There are so many little jokes, it stands up to repeated viewings.
    I think a lot of the movie is lost on a generation that is unaware of what is being parodied, but the fact that young people still enjoy it in spite of that shows its real genius. I watched an exposition on Blazing Saddles that explained the same thing to me, I was too young to understand that Hollywood had been inundated with Westerns and Mel Brookes was lampooning an entire era that existed before I was born, but I loved that movie anyway.

    I love this film it is clearly a take off on classic British murder mysteries like those Agatha Christie made famous. Even it's slow begin is well known part of those classic mystery, the idea is get a feel for the characters and drop small clues before the body drops. There is pick a random ending option on the DVD of this movie so you really don't have to do all the ends.which is what I do when I watch it.

You guys and gals started doin it but as soon as it got traction Michael had to split, meaning the whole “Off Hours” thing is done (after part 1 of a 2 parter I might add). I wish the best for Michael... he seems like a nice guy with some demons he struggles everyday to shake, and I hope he’s able to keep them from taking control. So no offense to a man who’s just trying to better his situation, but it feels like “After Hours” and Cracked all over again. Just gone one day. Short lived as Off Hours was, I’m gonna miss it. I hope this channel survives and thrives and I think that some version of “Hours” could be a big part of it. Good luck all.

    The director did want improvised jokes. There was actually only piece of improvised comedy. The "flames up face" bit. Everything else was scripted.

    I don't know if this true but there used to be an old game in the UK (possibly Canada too) called Ludo and I always assumed (made up?) that because it rhymed with Cluedo that made it easier to market.

    No mention of (under rated) Christopher Lloyd? I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I remember when I rewatched it, I was surprised that Lloyd was in this movie. I didn't recognize him when he wasn't an over the top Doc Brown.

      They mention him (they talk about his rapy-ness as a therapist in this) but all in all I'm pretty sure this was just an excuse to gush over Curry (as though anyone needs an actual excuse lol).

      @@andrewshepherd1633 thank you, I haven't been able to make it all the way through yet. (Heh, yeah. Oddly, when I first saw this I didn't know who Curry was. Madeline and Mull, certainly. But I didn't see Rocky Horror til the 90s and didn't recognize him here)

    I have no idea if you're going to read this comment, but the name Cluedo is a combination of clue and ludo (Latin for "I play").

    My standard post whenever the movie Clue comes up: who is the informant for Mr. Green? In any of the endings… there’s no clear informant for Mr. Green so how did Mr. Body know he was gay to blackmail him?
    Even in the infamous “real” 3rd ending where Mr Green is a plant (“I thought men like you were called a fruit”) there’s no clear informant for Mr. Green.
    My theory was that Mr Body was bi and had first hand experience.

    • @chrismanuel9768
      @chrismanuel9768 3 года назад

      Or Mr Green/the government sent false information to set him up as a plant, and Mr Body didn't know where the information originated. Otherwise he would have known it was fake.
