If you don't think there was a message and a point to a Chris Morris film about terrorists you weren't paying attention.
The thing was meticulously researched and a lot of the things that happen are based on real events.
I do recommend watching and reading some of what Chris Morris has to say on the film. Also just watch everything Chris Morris has done. It'll be a revelation. I know you've never watched Brass Eye because you'd know who Chris Morris was.

It's set in Sheffield (every character has really heavy Yorkshire accents) London isn't the ONLY city in the UK you know.

Very enjoyable episode but I had to jump in on the message thing. I can see how someone who hadn't heard of or read anything about the making of the film could see how it doesn't have a message so this isn't a criticism. Director Chris Morris who's known for his dark satire in the UK (i.e. Brass Eye, The Day Today, Jam) made Four Lions as a way to humanize not Jihadi terrorists. His aim, at least as I've interpreted it from the movie and Morris' interviews, is how the movie humanizes the perception made by some that enemy combatants are always superhuman beings who never make mistakes in order to create fear by showing them as a Three Stooges group of friends. A lot of the funny stuff in the movie actually come from real events of terrorists making boneheaded moves that sound more like they should be in the dumb criminals section of a blog than just front page news.
Here's a CBS News interview with Morris that explains his thesis best: ruclips.net/video/BkLYDo6x8-w/видео.html

Yes there is a message. The four lions are searching for meaning in their lives and this is all they have in their situation. Think school shooters for a US context. I'm surprised how much message they all missed in the movie but I guess it doesn't translate to the US.

Jaffa oranges are just oranges that are grown in Israel. Jaffa cakes are biscuits with an orange jelly centre.

I came here to say this. Also, that Jaffa Cakes are ridiculously good.

I was an unpaid extra in this film as it was filmed in my home city 😊 Met Chris Morris briefly, he's nice. There, that's my one claim to fame.

at least one person in this group seems a little sensitive. The gay joke is as michael said the joke is that he is forced to say he is something that he hates. Also it's a bit arrogant to say "it would be better if it was done in this completely different way that I thought of" Chris Morris is a national treasure. Check out The Brass Eye Paedogeddon! Special.

As for there being no message because these guys are only doing it because they think it's cool. As from alot of articles and specialist i have heard talk about it. The idea of groups convincing these kids that it's cool is part of it. They are using a similar tactic to the U.S. military. In that recruiters make it seem like it's a real life video game.

Ohmar is also in Star Wars Rogue One. I can't think of the actors name of the top of my head but he is a really great actor.

Great movie, get a bit more culturally aware before commenting on stuff like what is Kuffar and Jaffa. Four Lions is more like a deconstruction of "Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" .

Very much on board with everyone else. Immerse yourself in the work of Chris MOrris and watch some of his interviews. Also, stewart lees comedy vehicle (the ones with the chris morris faux interviews) are very much something you should all watch, just because I just remembered that is also a thign that exists... Unless you hate anti-comedy or live dissertations on the deconstructions of comedy XD I think i used some of those words right? Me big boy.

One of the best jokes for me was the devout but peaceful brother getting roughly arrested at the end. Deep, deep irony.

Idea for Small Beans channel: Michael hosts a shock jock style radio show like in Agents of Cracked where he vaguely sounds like and espouses the attitudes of Alex Jones. Complete with the ridiculous soundboard. The Swaim Lane! *Belch* “Winning!”

The guys (apart from Barry) are all northerners, not Londoners. They're from around Sheffield

Its been 4 years since I listened to this and actually saw the movie, and my politics really haved changed. It is funny how the terrorism expert didnt understand the satire in this movie, I wounder why that would be.

It felt to me about what happens when cultures co-opt ideologies without reeeeaallly understanding the meaning behind it. It’s a great barb at organised religion at translating it into a modern 1st world setting.
If you also would like to see a fantastic translation of this movie into a really short tv skit check out

I'd really like to know if Robert has read The Looming Tower. Also if he watched the miniseries based off it. With Jeff Daniels it's either on Hulu or Prime I'm pretty sure Hulu though. I really love the show and have just started the book. I'd love to hear Roberts opinion on both the show and book.

  • @teethgrinder83

Yeah I've got to agree with some of the other comments on here-there is a cultural misunderstanding here as well as a misunderstanding of Chris Morris. Not your guys fault of course but a lot of the movie is particularly British in its humour

WTH, why not make Robert's dumb 19-year-olds video idea, there's room for both.

I feel like you guys border on understanding the film but lack some cultural thing I can't put in to words besides visceral frustration
