CHIPs (and Adam-12)were part of the reasons I became a police officer (and still am but soon to retire after 40 years). They showed the way police officers pretty much handled things and that we weren't mean like some people made us out to be (kind of like now??). Looking forward to more CHIPs "investigations" by Rick.
I lived in California pretty much all of the 80's. I chose California because of this show when I was offered a choice while in the Marines. The only thing I knew about California was this TV show. What I didn't know was the difference between northern Cal and southern Cal. I chose Concord, CA and was quickly taught the difference. I did end up in SoCal from 85-90 so I did get to experience all the spoils of SoCal. It's funny. I loved this show back in the 70's but never realized that I had driven past this division a thousand times when leaving LA, via the Santa Monica freeway (I-10) The last time I left LA for good, I just happened to be looking to my right as I got onto the freeway. That's when I saw the old CHP location where they filmed this show. All those years that I entered that freeway and never noticed that location. I didn't see it again until 20-years later when I visited SoCal. I got lost one night and ended up driving right into that parking lot. I was like a kid at Christmas when I realized where I was. So much so that I returned the next day, just to take some pictures. I even posted them on my channel. That was a good time for TV. I could still watch those reruns today.
I met Larry Wilcox in 1981 in Minneapolis when he was promoting motorcycle safety. He posed for a picture with me. He was a decent guy. It was a good moment. I saw a picture of one of their filming rigs. When they are riding side by side, holding perfect formation, they are actually on a trailer that is being towed by a truck that has all the necessary lights, etc.
I love CHiP's I thought it was the coolest show back in the day. I still watch it today if I see it on TV. I would watch it more if I won this DVD offer.
John was a real proficient motorcyclist. Ponch had never ridden and was taught for the show. There were a couple shows where Ponch was seen in a hospital visited by all the Chip buddies. He had a cast on his arm. Well, that was real. He had fallen off his bike while filming and broke it.
I don't know what it is, but there is something about how you "Rick" narrate your videos. It keeps you captivated. And the beauty of it is, that you're not trying to show off by trying to talk like a broadcaster.Good job!
By the time you were wrapping up this episode, I remembered what I liked about CHiPs: Randi Oakes! This is what I like about these videos: they take me back when I kinda need it.
I used to pass the CHP station in Torrance I think...both are off the 110 but i was a big fan of CHiPs as a lil kid and was amazed to pass the station when in the truck with my grandpa visiting family. I thought it was the building from the show cause it had the CHP sign on the roof. ....still cool tho even tho it wasn’t the same building
Sandra: funny, one of my most favorite TV shows was the RCMP (of course back in 1950's-60's it was black and white). One week was on horse back, the next week was modern. Saw their uniforms in color in the magazines.
I remember the theme song and the two main characters cruising those sweeping highways. Those huge motor bikes patrolling made me feel safe as a kid. This show was a main stay of our nightly TV programs. Good to see the location for real.
Kawasaki: slogan "let the good times roll" ... unless there is a red light (before CHP used blue) in your rear view mirror ... Maybe another story related to CHiPS: going from Harley Davidson to Kawasaki motorcycles. ?Did Kawasaki help underwrite the costs? We may never know. Fun memories.
I still love CHiPs to this day! When I was a kid I used to run around the recess yard humming the theme song as I pretended to ride a CHP motorcycle with Ponch and Jon.
YAY ANOTHER CHIPS EPISODE! I love CHiPs so much!!!!!!! I have the DVD set! I've already watched every episode!! Please make more!!!! Loved the episode!
I was a regular watcher, I understand many of the freeway scenes were filmed on unopened stretches of freeways under construction. Thanks for the videos they are always enlightening.
I never got into CHIPS, but my older sister always made me sit down and watch it 🤨 she had the biggest crush on Erik Estrada 🤣🤣🤣 I like how the actual station is located right in the middle right of the freeway!! Looks so cool from far away!
I Know Better oh yes, of course!!! I’m an old lady at heart 💜 my favorite shows are, “I ❤️ Lucy”, “Family Ties”, “Three’s Company”, “Gilligan’s island” & “The Brady Bunch”. 🤣
I loved watching CHIPS when I was in highschool I'm a subscriber love your videos and enjoy them all keep up the great work. And fun to watch and learn a few things.
Rick, if you go all the way up Van Nuys Blvd to Foothill, take a left go to Paxton and turn right. The on and off ramps of the then unopened 210 and general area was used alot. When i was last there, very easy to match things up
CHiPS was on after I was working full time, so not a regular viewer until reruns. I so enjoy your detailed tracking of locations, then and now. As a kid in San Diego, CA in the 1950's I loved Broderick Crawford's "Highway Patrol," based largely on the California Highway Patrol, even down to the shoulder patches. Although, we never saw two-door Buicks (or whatever TV used) as CHP units. By today's culture, making a show about two human beings doing good as law enforcement officers might not succeed. Innocent times. Rick, praying your 4 legged pal has recovered and you are doing well and staying safe.
God I remember when this came out. I was six years old and I remember being glued to our huge Zenith TV 📺 (it was more a piece of furniture than screen lol) loving the motorcycles. Up until high school I still watched it. Great tv memories
CHIPS came out when I was seven years old and we had the same Zenith TV with the big metal on/off knob above the channel knobs and I'll never forget in the winter taking one's own life in your hands when turning it on or off and getting the zap of your life from the static electricity as the arc could be heard sometimes in the next room. The last time I saw an episode of CHIPS I was in a MEPS facility in the late 80's getting processed into the military. I think I can catch up on some episodes on Amazon Prime.
Started watching a bunch of tv shows when the pandemic started last year. My dog who never liked watching tv, LOVES THIS SHOW! He expects for me to put it on when going to bed after going out at night and will bark until I do.
I worked at that CHP station from 1989 to 94. As you said, the building was replaced. The new public door faces east and the original entrance was faced to the south towards Washington Blvd.
Hey Rick, congrats on hitting over 91k!! If I remember correctly a lot of the outdoor filming for CHiPS was done on the 210 freeway that was still under construction! I remember noticing how clean the pavement was, no oil stains or skid marks! Thanks for sharing my friend!! 😷
I always wanted to see the filming of the show and where they did that back then. I was a huge fan. To think how many times I passed by the 10 and 110 back then with my parents and not know. Wish we had youtube and internet back then.
Thansk for posting this. Never really watched CHIPS. Saw it in passing at my grandmas or aunts home. Looks interesting. thanks for showing the background and some filming location me. Great video to mix it up a bit.
Eric Estrada became a cop in real life. He focused on busting human trafficing. He made movies about this and traveled to where movies were shown. I met him at my church. Super nice guy!
I always liked how the station looked liked it was ensconced by the highways, like it was a safe space where Ponch and John and the gang could hang out and goof off. I'm glad you're taking on CHiPs!
What an awesome video, thank you for sharing your work with us! Yes indeed, I grew up watching CHiPS every Thursday night at 8pm eastern on NBC, Network TV! The resemblances from back when the show was filmed and now are amazing! Great work in capturing this for us all!
CHiPs was a favorite as a kid growing up along with the Dukes of Hazard and Emergency... Watched Emergency with great-grandma and great-grandpa... I always wanted to be John when me and the cousins would play as if we were them... I'd love to win this 3rd season set... Stay safe... Have a great day...
I still watch it everyday I look at it now and though how cheezy it is and love looking at how they were driving the motorcycles, it seems like they were so close like they were on a trailer filming?? I Also noticed the lights in there glasses... thank you for those awesome goggle shots ....
There was nothing better than 1970's and 80's action TV shows. It was such a great time and a great part of my childhood. I have been watching Chips on the Charge Channel. Brings back good memories. I sometimes wish I could go back to much simpler times.

Driving back to Upland Ca from Bakersfield Ca they would be filming on the new 210 fwy. You had to detour off fir a little bit. If there they would ask if you wanted to be an extra car in the scene. My dad never wanted to wait.

The show had glaring mistakes with continuity, film equipment in view, and in story-lines... so much so that the mistakes appeared almost every week in a TV Guide 'Goofs' column. CHiPs was one of my favorite shows back in the 1970s - made me want to visit Los Angeles and see the sights from this series as well as a couple of others.
I grew up watching CHiPs & loved the show. I always knew there would be a wreck at the end of the show for Jon & Ponch to catch the bad guys & the vehicle would explode.
CHiPs was my all time favorite show growing up so thank you very much for sharing this video and other videos of other childhood shows of mine. Keep up the great work
CHiPs has always been a favorite show of mine. Thanks for sharing this piece of history of the filming location with us. Hopefully you cover more about this show.
This VIdeo of CHIPS .. so cool, it seems the more i watch your channel the more i learn about television shows i used to watch when i was younger....... can't wait to see what the next video is going to be about...
I always found it odd decades ago when watching CHiP's seeing their patrol station tucked away in the clover leaf of an interchange but for logistical reasons it makes a lot of sense to me now. I also remember episodes where they showed the interior of both the vehicle repair building and offices, I was always curios if they were done on location or a sound stage.
The suggested speed on that cloverleaf is 25 but, we always went around it at tire squealing speeds around 50 and with the angle of the road you could see quite a bit down there so you know they could see as much. I always wondered if they got on the radio to have someone look for us.
CHIPS was one of my favorite shows Rick. I started my TV watching as a kid with my favorite was everyday at 5 pm the Life of Riley with William Bendix ha ha 😁
i was born in 1970 so Chips was a big part of my childhood but in 1977, Life of Riley was 30 years earlier and i had never heard of the show till an older man happened along my buddy and i on the side of a mountain were cooking lunch and he said that we were living the Life of Riley and i had no idea what he was talking about so i went home and looked it up
I drove a bike in LA for years. Used to bike with friends and we traveled on the LA frwy's often. Chips TV show violated a major safety rule in biking in that you NEVER travel side by side with another bike. It's always a 'staggered' position, especially on the freeway. Also, when you can't see the tires, and it's a two-shot with both guys driving their bikes, they're being pulled on a trailer for the camera shot. Like here: 1:08 It would be crazy to drive this close next to another bike.
Hi Rick! This was a fun one! Timing was perfect for the original CHiPs production to use brand new, unfinished freeways for filming. No public traffic, and likely no permits either. It appears the smaller building at the CHP station may be a vehicle maintenance facility, as was in the original design. The old joke: What do you get when CHP meets up with DPS (AZ Highway Patrol)? Chips & Dips! Ba dum.
CHIPs (and Adam-12)were part of the reasons I became a police officer (and still am but soon to retire after 40 years). They showed the way police officers pretty much handled things and that we weren't mean like some people made us out to be (kind of like now??). CHiPs was a staple at our house. Lol. I remember it coming on every Sunday night. When u heard that opening theme song music u knew what time it was!!

@@davidmorley1606 true. They built this one next to the old one, then tore the old one down

Cool a Chips video. Thanks for the diverse content Rick! Keep up the great work!
Used to watch CHiPs every week when I was a kid.
I loved Chips!!! even now I find myself humming the intro.
I can remember watching CHiPS as a kid.
Who else as a child watched classic shows instead of cartoons??
Instead? My mornings went cartoons, then these came on after. They didn't compete.
Meeeeee
I watched them both!
@@73beetle19 watched them both too. Now I have the DVDs.
Yeah, cartoons were for "kids". LOL But very young people watched classic shows!
Ba dum.
I'm sure they still had all the permits because you know the city and state have to get their cut.
