HI, I have been growing sprouts on and off for years. I used to work in a sprouting factory about 38 years ago and that's where I learned how. At first it was all about alfalfa sprouts. Then I branched out into other kinds including Broccoli When I had my first cancer 11 years ago I found out that Broccoli was good for fighting cancer. I'm on my second cancer now and growing sprouts again. When I first tried to sprout broccoli years ago I couldn't get then to sprout. I contacted the seed supplier and was told to soak them for only 2 hours instead of the usual 8 for other seeds. I've been doing this ever since and it works for me. I also just rinse the seeds in water to clean them and have never had problems. Thanks for all the info on the benefits of these sprouts I will keep growing and consuming them for the rest of my life.
I went through a whole pack of broccoli seeds with no issues, not using the soap/apple cider vinegar solution first to clean the seeds. I guess I just got lucky with the first pack. With the second pack, rinsing with only tap water (no soap/vinegar soak) ended up with sprouts smelling bad by the 2nd and 3rd day. They were discarded. Then I used your soap/vinegar soaking method on more seeds from the same package. This method worked perfectly and I just sprouted a big batch successfully. I now always use this method to ensure no bacteria remains on the seeds prior to sprouting. Thanks for your videos!
I've recently switched from the jar method to the open growing tray method using a silicone screen as a grow medium. I've also started mixing my seeds on the medium, half broccoli, and half mustard seed. I've been freezing my harvest in baggies, I get 3 to a tray.
Thank you Doctor Patrick your info has been of great value to me. I am 67 years old and since I started your smoothies I have had less joint pain and I am still doing brutal Home Improvement work such as working in my attic and crawl spaces. What a work out ! My energy is off the charts. So much that at times I need a glass of wine to wind down and go to sleep. Love all of your videos. I saw you first on JR's pod cast.

@@FoundMyFitness thanks Rhonda, just reviewing steps. Can you use grapefruit seed extract GSE for the 10 min to clean seeds? What if sprouting hasn’t finished in 2-3 days? Do you still finish that process and freeze or eat the sprouts?
Thanks for the video. You only need to soak broccoli seeds for 3 hours max. The smaller the seed the less time you need to soak it. Big seeds need about 12 hours but small seeds only need 3 hours. I've even spoken to a professional grower of seed sprouts and he only soaks his broccoli seeds for 3 hours. Thanks Rhonda for all of your great work, much appreciated.
Rhonda, great video! There’s a couple of tricks that are important; 1. It’s important with broccoli and especially broccoli sprouts to cook the sprouts before you eat them. Nobody does this! But they should. The sprouts contain the epi-specifier protein (ESP) which will cause the hydrolysis of the sprouts to go in a direction towards nitriles and away from sulforaphane. So to maximize the sulforaphane we have to cook the sprouts. I’m never really sure if I have over cooked the broccoli or the sprouts so I simply eat some myrosinase containing cruciferous vegetable like daikon skin or radish or spicy mustard etc. to replace the myrosinase. 2. There’s a great hack to triple the sulforaphane precursors; simply add a scant teaspoon of sugar to the rinse water on the third day and rinse as you normally would. I will try to dig up the study that was performed for this little hack. You’re basically adding stress and the plant response by building more of its defensive glucosinolate (sulforaphane precursor). Oh, also, make sure that your iodine levels are good before you tank up on broccoli sprouts. Some folks are sensitive or don’t have enough iodine and the sprouts can deplete/block the iodine according to some scientists.
I found this video super helpful and wish I had seen it before I attempted to grow sprouts from watching less-helpful youtube instructional sprouting videos. It turns out I've been doing it all wrong! I appreciate the helpful details about cleaning and soaking the seeds and then rinsing them 10 times. Which is fine, but it's great and feels so much more reliable to have it all condensed and in a easy format from you two!
That’s not sterilization, just good sanitation. This sort of thing is necessary when culturing to prevent bacterial growth. Star San (ask at your local home brewing store) would be fantastic for this, and much better than soap (lol). It’s all rinsed off, but star San (acidic solution that is safe to consume in small amounts but which kills 10,000,000 bacteria per second) would be more effective, and would need far less rinsing. In the end, you are rinsing with tap water, which is by no means completely free of bacteria (unless you have reverse osmosis system). So, you can still have some contamination, it’s just not likely to be enough to cause any issue. Complete sterilization requires pressure cooking for some time, etc., would not work for this.
@@marynewman9180 I thought I was being kinda picky, but with home brewing or science (of course) there is a real distinction between sanitized or sterilized. Star San works great for sanitizing, won’t add any soapy flavor. RO is sanitary rinse, still not sterile (as some microorganisms have spores that aren’t killed without pressure cooking as in home canning).
Then I freeze mine. When I pull a baseball size portion of them out of my food grade container those little green leaves just shine. Combine them with my other cold ingredients in the blender and blend for 30 seconds. The four raw egg yolks go in later and blend for only five as I don't want any heat on the yolks. I only use two and a half tablespoons of seeds and get almost a quart container of them. I just use my yogurt containers. Also, when I rinse them I put the seeds in an Oxo two cup angled measuring cup and it holds a quart mason jar at a good angle.
Thank you! As a fellow scientist, I enjoy this kind of content , where we get enlightened with beneficial compounds AND how to grow them! You're God sent and a breathe of fresh air....much love from San Antonio. Stay safe and keep well. 💘
I have been sprouting for 6 months , I love it. I had a internal blackhead on my belly side for years , I punctured and squeezed it regularly , did not want to bother my doctor , since consuming , broccoli sprouts, it burst and has not returned !
Rhonda - Thanks again for a terrific video! I started sprouting because of you. It is a amazing public service. The world would be a lot healthier if we all sprouted. Question: Sometimes the sprouts develop mold and smell terrible even after pre-treating the seeds. Do you recommend discarding the sprouts at this point or treating again with apple cider vinegar and soap? I hate to throw them out. This happens about 25% of the time form me. Very frustrating!
Thank you! We had given up on sprouting broccoli because we had to throw so many smelly seeds out. We tried H202 (2%) for 6 hours, poured the water out once (no rinsing as per the found video info) and then sprouted and rinsed for the next 4 days. We are going to follow your directions. Thank you so much!
Love it, add more please! Im a wild food forager and was wondering if you have ever tried that? I think the wild mustards are probably the most nutritional dense foods out there. Wished I had the ability to get them analyzed
Thanks for demonstrating hot to grow broccoli sprouts. I looked in several stores for broccoli sprouts but I could not find them. Now that this instructional video was produced I will grow my own. This should be a more nutritional and economical way to obtain this super food source.
Thank you for this video! I have broccoli sprout seeds coming in the mail for the first time, so this was great timing. Vain request incoming: Could you do a video on the science of using nutrition to prevent facial wrinkles as we age? I know nutritious foods helps skin stay elastic, but if I knew exactly how, and exactly which foods were best, I might remember to eat them more.
I dig it! Love this instructional vid as well as your shorter form videos where you condense the knowledge down for us. (Since I’ve watched a few longer ones and am convinced of your credibility.) Also- you’re one of the best listeners around! Thank you-
Keep these videos coming! I LOVE your videos and this was a great change up from the usual. They're all brilliant videos! You've changed my whole nutritional game!! You are greatly appreciated! Thanks Dr. Patrick!!
I have been storing the seeds in the freezer to keep potential bacteria away. No soap rinse and after a few batches there haven't been any bacteria spikes. So far so good.
As a sprouter for 2 months, this is the question I searched the pdf for.... to soak at 65-70C or not to soak for the triple effect. 33g x 3 is easier than eating 100g. Seems I have been draining the bitter goodness off.
@@jw6180 There was a process earlier mentioned by Dr Patrick, in order to increase sulfurophane, that it needed to be heated at 70 celsius for 10 min. I was curious if this was up to date.
I have also been 'soaking' them in 65 degree water for 10 minutes to deactivate a competing enzyme pathway and hence increasing the amount of sulphoraphane. Its a bit of a pain and an update would be great! I wonder in Dr R still does this?
I always serve them to my guests. Salad consists of broccoli sprouts, tuna, baby ginger, olive oil and the most important thing, rice vinegar. Wonderful! There's never any left. It's inevitable that they want to know more about them so I send your videos :)
Loved video! Thank you for doing this, my first batch were plentiful 😊 Does it matter what time of day to eat broccoli sprouts? I have been blending mine and chugging them down in the afternoon like a snack. Does it matter for nutrient absorption to drink on an empty stomach or with food/other nutrients? Or is the idea generally to consume them any which time and way I can?
Amazing video :) Thank you for making me so much smarter and healthier! I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half and am still learning new things from you. You have significantly changed (for the better) not only my diet but the diet of both my parents so I really can't thank you enough!
Great video, Dr. Patrick! However, you forgot to mention the critical importance of quality seeds. The sulforaphane potential from the sprouts is only as impactful as the Glucoraphanin content in the seeds. I highly suggest that you consider this as a talking point in the future to spread awareness to your viewers. In theory, you could eat 10 pounds of sprouts grown from a seed with low Glucoraphanin and not achieve close to the same sulforaphane conversion if you consumed 1 pound of sprouts from a seed that contained high Glucoraphanin levels. I'd love to hear your feedback! Keep up the great work :)
SUCCESS!!! No stink. Your advice WORKED and now I have 2 - 1/2 gal jars full of sprouts. WOOHOO!!! I'M A SPROUTING FOOL!!!!! Thank you Dr. P!!!! Yer a peach.
Isn't the soap or bleach absorbed by the seed? During the current carona outbreak we are asked not to wash our produce using soap, how is this any different?
As per fda: www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/selecting-and-serving-produce-safely Wash all produce thoroughly under running water before preparing and/or eating, including produce grown at home or bought from a grocery store or farmers’ market. Washing fruits and vegetables with soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash is not recommended.
Short answer is no, the disinfectant mixture is on the outside of the seed for only long enough(10min) to kill off harmful bacteria, mold and other nasty things that otherwise would thrive in the moist environment. The seeds are to protect against absorption. This is why if you were to eat seeds whole, they come out in your poop unscathed and would be able to grow in the ground. Also, to everyone freaking out about using soap vinegar or bleach, the produce you buy in the supermarket is treated with a bleach solution before it is sold to supermarkets. That's not includes other methods used to extend shelf life of fruit and vegetables. disinfecting seeds should be the least of anyone's worries. Also, that video linked was not a professional saying not to wash with soap, it was some random person criticizing a doctor about using soap, random person does not understand the science of why something is safe, and they do not care to actually look up the science behind why it is safe. A doctor said to make sure to properly wash your produce by soaking in a diluted soap water mixture for a very short period of time.
Dr Patrick explains technical subject matter better than anyone I've seen or listened to!!! Love these videos! PS - I found you via Joe Rogan a few years back.
I've seen a lot of other videos on this topic and NONE of them mention putting bleach or anything else in to remove bacteria. NO WAY will I personally be putting bleach on my food. But I'm just curious as to WHY you are suggesting this when no one else is?
I agree with you. I won’t use bleach either. I find apple cider vinegar works well. I soak the seeds for 15 mins before I start the sprouting process. Much safer.

I've been growing my own broccoli sprouts for years THANKS TO YOUR research and continued Q&A's featuring plenty of amazing knowledgeable guests. I called my local market and asked them if their seller was certified and characterized the content of the glucoraphenan. They weren't familiar with the details, so I hope one day it will be
Awesome video! Many other RUclips sprouting guides do not mention the step regarding cleansing the seeds from bacteria- I appreciate the added knowledge. As well, many videos do not cover specifically what freezing does to sprouted seeds, in which one needs to read research papers to figure if it's possible or not to freeze sprouts while preserving their beneficial properties... eg, daikon sprouts are NOT to be frozen as they lose their nutraceutical value.

Holy crap. Your skin and complexion looks brighter and better than the other smoothie videos I watched. More sulforaphane for me! Thanks for the info.
Great video, didn't know to "sterilize: the seeds first!
@@Photologistic Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I do have RO, I'll look for star san.
I thought the seed companies already did that?
She has also changed her former recommended growing time from four days to two.
Also, when I rinse them I put the seeds in an Oxo two cup angled measuring cup and it holds a quart mason jar at a good angle.
this is golden, thank you Rhonda ❤️
10000% more videos like this! This was awesome!
Very informative, particularly about disinfecting / sterilising the seeds before germination, and the importance of thorough rinsing and draining.
Thank you, Rhonda!
I do enjoy these types of videos. Keep on making them! Broccoli sprouts are amazing :)
Great video! I appreciate learning new ways of becoming healthier. I especially appreciated the part about freezing broccoli sprouts. Thank you!
Thanks, Dr Patrick. We have just started our first batch!
This is great. Love concise and info-packed instructional videos. This is news we can use!
YESSS!!!!! Please do more of these videos!!! The information is always welcome, but the DIY aspect is just as important i think.
I love the countdown. Such a good idea
This was the most straightforward and clear video about growing broccoli sprouts, thank you!!
Have you had better luck since your comment ?
How do you consume wild mustards?
Bless you Rhonda please, these type of clips would be a great addition to your already fantastic content.
Yes! More videos hitting the highlights!!! ❣ Also love the longer, more detailed ones when time permits!
This kind of practical video is so appreciated. Very well done - not a moment wasted. Excellent.
This video is fantastic: succinct, immediately practicable, yet complete. I know exactly what to do and how to proceed.
Love this type of video. So clear, short and to the point! ♥️
I dig it! Love this instructional vid as well as your shorter form videos where you condense the knowledge down for us. (Since I’ve watched a few longer ones and am convinced of your credibility.) Also- you’re one of the best listeners around! Thank you-
Great video! I appreciate the visual instructions. I would love to see one on your latest vegetable smoothie too! 🌱
I love your intense science podcasts but it is also refreshing to have a short How to do it video. thanks for all the great content
Question: What about the 70 degrees celsius for 10 minutes? Is that old info that isn't up to date?
As a sprouter for 2 months, this is the question I searched the pdf for.... to soak at 65-70C or not to soak for the triple effect. 33g x 3 is easier than eating 100g. Seems I have been draining the bitter goodness off.
I am keen to find the answer to this also. Am I draining away the benefit?
I’m initially soaking mine in a 10:1 bleach solution, then rinsing thoroughly and soaking 6-8 hours.
We need a video on your skin care routine.
Thank you for the crucial info, Rhonda, but also if that's your garden, it looks like paradise!!!
Loved video! Thank you for doing this, my first batch were plentiful 😊
Does it matter what time of day to eat broccoli sprouts? I have been blending mine and chugging them down in the afternoon like a snack. Does it matter for nutrient absorption to drink on an empty stomach or with food/other nutrients? Or is the idea generally to consume them any which time and way I can?
Eat them the morning on an empty stomach
Amazing video :) Thank you for making me so much smarter and healthier! I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half and am still learning new things from you. You have significantly changed (for the better) not only my diet but the diet of both my parents so I really can't thank you enough!
Fabulous info-packed video! I'd love to see more like this 😊
Greatly interested in this video. Excited to start sprouting! Thanks Rhonda.
So.. Any suggestions on good quality seeds from Amazon? Heilroom rainbow maybe?
Thanks for the clear and concise instructions (I'm a first-time sprouter).
Are the sprouts suppose to stink even if you get the process right or is smell a sign that something went wrong?
No they shouldn't stink. They should smell fresh. They have rotted if they stink. I buy mine as they always rot when i try
Yes, the information is great and the "How to" is the cherry on the top.
105 views and 98 likes... what's up early gang
SUCCESS!!!
As per fda:
www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/selecting-and-serving-produce-safely
Wash all produce thoroughly under running water before preparing and/or eating, including produce grown at home or bought from a grocery store or farmers’ market.
Confession: I have a bit of a crush on Dr. Rhonda.
@@segamegadrive3903 Yeah, I figured. What's not to love?!
Yeah I am guilty also

I am also guilty. 😘😆
T.C. AND CREW !!!!!! I SAW HER ON JOE ROGAN FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!
@@dannycalley7777, that's where I first saw her too. Great interview!
You are brilliant! Thank you, Rhonda🌼
1:27 begin sprouting instructions here.
Thank you Dr. Rhonda.. You’re my go to Dr.
Much safer.
I don’t understand why people post videos and don’t answer simple questions about their videos.
Would love more of this type videos. The in depth educational videos are great, but the "how to" health videos would be great also.
the low views on this one are almost a crime, thanks
She uploads too infrequent to build a strong stable viewerbase. The videos are always great and have nearly all like 99% likes but her focus is more on her own platform and not on this youtube channel. So she is involved in the crime!
@@Utoko Renan got an unintentional preview by clicking a link that went out before public release. Expect more RUclips videos. :)
Please please please post more instructional / how to videos like this….you are an amazing informative resource and we appreciate all the great info! Thanks again
Thank you so much! I have been using the broccoli sprouts in my smoothies now for a few months. This information may possibly save lives. I am passing this on to my friends.
Yes! These videos are perfect! Short video full of information for people who may not have the time, or brain power to sit through a more in-depth video! Please please more videos like this! 5 minute round up videos, with bullet points, and step by step guide of how to implement your vast knowledge into our daily routine! Keep up the fantastic work Rhonda, you’re brilliant! Xx
I've been growing my own broccoli sprouts for years THANKS TO YOUR research and continued Q&A's featuring plenty of amazing knowledgeable guests. I called my local market and asked them if their seller was certified and characterized the content of the glucoraphenan. They weren't familiar with the details, so I hope one day it will be
Have been putting vinegar and dish soap in the soaking water during all those years you've been doing it? And then rinsing them 10 times?
Awesome video! Many other RUclips sprouting guides do not mention the step regarding cleansing the seeds from bacteria- I appreciate the added knowledge. As well, many videos do not cover specifically what freezing does to sprouted seeds, in which one needs to read research papers to figure if it's possible or not to freeze sprouts while preserving their beneficial properties... eg, daikon sprouts are NOT to be frozen as they lose their nutraceutical value.
I love the countdown at the beginning of the video!
