I’ve a got a 1987 25 hp evinrude on a 2018 1436 Alumacraft light jon. It easily hits 32 or 33 but i have gotten it up to 35 a handful of times. No tilt trim no jackplate just trimmed all the way up with a passenger sitting on the back bench with me and 6 gallons of fuel up front! Great video
I had one as a kid with a 40hp and a 35 gallon gas tank in the front for weight. Nothing else in the boat. It was stupid fast and yes we crashed it a few times.
That prop seemed to help you alot.I have the same engine and a 14ft tracker Jon and a 16ft Lowe big Jon and I'm gonna order the same prop and try it.Also have a 25 Johnson too and I can use the prop on both.I hope my results are as good as yours!
this is friggin awesome. I'm def using your template when i start my budget jon boat. Paid $100 for it. Now I just gotta get it ready. i think it's a 75 sears robuck jon boat.
Nice! My first boat was a sears sea king 12' with an OMC 9.9. I used to go out to the local spoil islands with my friends when i was about 10 years old. I loved that boat, wish i had it today.
I'm very surprised the top speed was so low. Many other videos used 25 horsepower motors and get over 30 mph. 34 with the new prop was great. Can't wait to see the results of more modifications.
@@CampCatch No Kidding. Hard to tell what is wrong with a motor that just doesn't want to run like it should. You might have seen close to 40 had it been working well.
My next day of testing should show different results as ive added tabs and fixed a plug wire that was robbing power and about 400rpms. i will play with using that last trim hole if needed.
Friend, l think the other person was right, drop the motor tilt all the way down and lower the jack plate all the way to then you have more motor in the water and the prop will react differently to 😊😊😊
With the motor too low you just have extra drag slowing you down. Ive got a hydraulic jack plate and I can easily kill 2-3mph on my top end with the plate all the way down.
Hey man I love the build and I have a 1436 Grumman that I’m building now and I have a 15 horse Johnson that I too out at 24.2 with I’m thinking about investing in a jackplate
When you added the trim tabs after this did it help with the boat popping up and down love your boat man been looking for inspiration on how to build mine and you definitely hit the nail on the head👍one more question have to thought about putting float pods on the back like the mud boats just curious pros or cons
Shortly after adding tabs i swapped to a built merc 25 so its very hard to say. The merc was a little faster and much stronger down low (due to being freshly built vs the worn out OMC). The tabs stopped the bouncing all together. Pods would have been my next move but i moved on to a bigger project and sold the Jon boat. I had a son and decided my free time would be spent with him rather then making youtube videos. I may vome back to it eventually once hes in school.
I’m doing the same thing with my 14 36 although I’m wanting and hoping to run a 670 predator long tail. How much does that motor weigh and does the transom flex ? How did you re enforce yours ? This is my first boat so learning as I go
no noticeable transom flex however the omc 35 is extremely light at about 125lbs. Your bigger issue is going to be floatation. I do not think a 1436 without pods will handle a 670 long tail. You will likely end up taking water over the transom with even the smallest waves.
It flexed a lot even with a smaller engine. It never sprung a leak even later on with a stronger engine on it and significantly more speed (about 40mph) it was fine. Adding trim tabs made it much more managable.
It's still going as compared to the 4 strokes with inferior alloy. I had a mercury/tohatsu that was corroded inside the water jacket. I did buy a used Johnson/Suzuki 9.9 fresh water motor and I'm going to use it in both salt and fresh water. Definitely flush each use. I'll check it annually for degradation in the water passages.
Having tested new stainless vs new aluminum props on my 50hp Suzuki… doesn’t make a bit of difference in performance on these lower HP motors. They just don’t have the power to take advantage of the stiffer stainless.
@@chevyon37s I later found in testing on the next engine (modded 25 merc) that the stainless prop of the exact same specs did net me a little more mph per rpm then the aluminum. But i think a larger diameter prop may have different results, and the lower the rpms the less difference they make. The large gains in this video were due to the wear on the aluminum prop.
My 1436 wouldn't float an 85hp, maybe with some massive pods. If i stand in the back with the merc 25 i currently have on it theres like an inch from top of the transom to the water. Id love to see yours when done, im sure it will be a rocket ship.
update guys i have the 85hp motor and am getting ready to mount it tomorrow will post video after its totally sorted out tuned and ready to race in the next couple weeks
Interesting I ran a old school 35hp on my rib inflatable with a aluminum 10x15 prop, made 36mph, I ran a stainless and got 35 mph, I’m thinking perhaps a stainless is too heavy for the motor to spin and thus the less speed, I don’t know for sure, I read that stainless steel props only really make a difference on motors 60hp and up I don’t know , can’t confirm this.
@@johns.6570 not all stainless props are going to preform the same even with the same pitch and size. In my case the aluminum I swapped from was very worn out.
i have a 1542 jon boat with a 25hp 2 stroke yamaha. i get 28mph no sweat with me and my wife in there. also mine is decked so its a lot heavier than yours. the best i've ever done was 31mph going down river with the wind at my back. you need a wider boat, it'll sit higher in the water and be faster
The old OMC 35s were flywheel rated so the 35 is really more like 28hp in more modern stamdards. This boat has a merc 25 on it with some mods now, its considerably faster now. Also keep in mind that in this video i have 2 people and 60lbs of lead all the way up on the bow to keep the bow down, it has tabs now and levels out on its own.
Did you ever figure out that without the weight of someone in the front, holding the boat lower in the water and causing more drag, you could probably get over 40 out of it with the right trim?
That old OMC was worn out bad and ended up coming apart. Its got a merc 25 on it not with .20 weiscos, boysen reeds and some light port work. It does 39 with just me in it now, and is limited by the prop.

All you have to do is drop the tilt pin one spot closer to the transom. That should knock that porpoising right out
